Chairperson’s Greeting
Vin Hanchuruck
Branford Festival Chairperson
Welcome to the 26th Annual Branford Festival
O
n behalf of the scores of volunteers
who have worked tirelessly for the
past six months, I would like to
welcome you to the 26th annual Branford Festival. Our three-day extravaganza of fun, food, and
entertainment has become the unofficial kick-off
event heralding the summer season in Branford.
The middle of June brings us the end of the school
year, Flag Day, Father’s Day, and for 26 years, the
Branford Festival.
The success of an event of this magnitude
would not be possible without the support of so
many in our community. Our corporate sponsors
provide the financial means not only for the topnotch entertainment but for the extensive, behindthe-scenes operations. Please notice their banners
that adorn the Town Hall and the flagpoles on
Main Street. Thank you, corporate sponsors.
The festival also benefits from the donations
of hundreds of Branford’s citizens. Thank you
to those who have donated for the first time as
well as those who continue to support us year
after year.
I cannot say enough about the dedicated group
of volunteers who work on our committee. They
are a diverse group of individuals that functions as
a well-oiled machine. Each brings his or her own
unique skills and talents; their only reward is seeing the good people of Branford enjoy themselves
at the Branford Festival. I am honored to work
with all of them. Thank you, committee members.
Without our volunteers, this festival could not
happen. Everything that you do, no matter how
insignificant it may seem, is a task that needs to be
done. Your help is an integral part of the success of
the Branford Festival. Thank you, volunteers.
Friday night, our food tents and entertainment
kick off at 5 p.m. You can enjoy a meal that you
didn’t have to cook at home and listen to the music of the Governor’s Foot Guard and the Branford Town Band. Next, the Branford High School
Concert Choir (fresh off its extended stay in Italy)
will entertain you under the direction of Cathyann
Roding. Article 19 will keep the music flowing till
Vonda Shepard takes the stage.
On Saturday morning, be sure to arrive bright
and early for breakfast on the Green and be one of
the first to walk through the Branford Chamber
of Commerce’s Craft & Business Expo. The expo
runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will have entertainment during the day, both behind Town Hall and
on Main Street. Be sure to bring the children as
our kids’ activity area will once again have plenty
of rides to keep them happy.
We have a great lineup for Saturday night, so
bring your blankets and chairs, visit your favorite
food vendors, and settle in. The music starts at
5:15 p.m. with King for a Day. The Father of the
Year contest winner will be announced at 6:15 p.m.
Souled Out will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. and
is sure to get the crowd warmed up for our closing act. I have been patiently waiting three years
to hear Fleetwood Mix (a Fleetwood Mac tribute
band) and, weather permitting, at 8:45 p.m. I will.
I hope that you enjoy the music of Fleetwood Mac
as much as I do.
Sunday morning, let me begin by saying, “Happy Father’s Day.” The Branford Road Race starts
with registration and packet pickup at 8:30 a.m.
The health walk begins at 10:05 a.m., followed
by the five-mile race at 10:15 a.m. and the fun
run at 11:30 a.m. The five-mile race will bring the
runners through scenic Indian Neck, Hotchkiss
Grove, and Pine Orchard before returning them
to the Town Green.
Sunday is not just for runners. The Rotary
Club has its annual pancake breakfast and the
Classic Car Show is back as well as the annual
baking contest. Entertainment on the Main Stage
starts at 10:30 a.m. with Two Hours from Broadway. They will be followed at 11:15 a.m. by the
White-Eyed Lizard Band, at 12:30 p.m. Adam
and the Waxman will take the stage, and at 2 p.m.
Hitlist will play.
Let me be the first to welcome you to the Branford Festival. Thank you, visitors and citizens of
Branford. There is nothing more worthwhile as
a committee member than to look out from the
stage and see all of you having a great time. This
is why we do it.
Enjoy the 26th annual Branford Festival. Be sure
to visit our website for all festival information:

Governor’s Foot Guard Kicks off Branford Festival
T
he Branford Festival begins with an opening celebration on Friday, June 18 at 5 p.m. The ceremony
will feature the Branford Town Band and the Connecticut Governor’s Foot Guard.
The Second Company, Governor’s Foot Guard is one
of the oldest military organizations in existence with uninterrupted service since March 1775. It was organized
in New Haven, chartered by the General Assembly of
the then Colony of Connecticut, and led into battle by
its first commandant, Captain Benedict Arnold. Today,
in its 235th year of continuous service and now based
in Branford, the Second Company is part of the Connecticut State Militia. Its members dedicate their time
and talents to the governor and people of the state of
Connecticut by participating in various events and performing community service projects, all without pay or
other financial assistance. In 2009 its members contributed more than 48,000 volunteer hours at weekly drills,
various patriotic events, band concerts, parades, fife and
drum musters, color guards, veteran support functions,
and educational details.
The unit is commanded by Major Peter D. Laffin of
Hamden. For more information or to make a donation,
visit www.footguard.org.

Article 19
Main Stage, Friday at 7 p.m.
A
rticle 19 is a band originating out of Hartford comprised of
five individuals who each brings his own unique style to the
table. All of the members have been active performers with previous and very successful bands, coming together to merge sounds
and create a unique blend of pop/rock fused with heavy influences
of groove and funk.
Three of the members, Rick Fritsch (rhythm guitar/keyboard),
Doug Parkinson (bass), and Jim Townsend (drums), have been
performing together since 2007. In 2008, Brett Wilson joined Article 19 as lead vocalist. Dan Fortin was added as lead guitarist in
2010.
Their talents together named Article 19 “Best New Group”
as well as “Best Pop/Rock Band” in the 2008 Hartford Advocate
Grand Band Slam. Reclaiming the title of “Best Pop/Rock Band”
in the 2009 Hartford Advocate Grand Band Slam, Article 19 was
also named “Best Band” by its readers. Each band member has won
numerous awards in their respective categories over the years as well.
Article 19 has performed at some of the Northeast’s most premium
venues including: Mohegan Sun Wolf Den, XL Center, Toad’s Place,
Kenny’s Castaways, the Webster Theater, and Six Flags parks. The
band has also shared the stage with national acts such as Hanson, Ryan Cabrera, N.E.R.D., We the Kings, Boys Like Girls, Flo Rida, The
Veronicas, Streetlight Manifesto, Big D. and the Kids Table, O.A.R.,
Kris Allen, and Lady Gaga.
Throughout their energetic live performances they are able to maintain musical integrity and clarity while combining many styles of music. In 2009 the band released its debut EP titled “Look at Me Now”
which encompasses all these styles. A dynamic, passionate, and wellrounded band, there is no telling where the future will lead. For more

Vonda Shepard
Main Stage, Friday at 8:45 p.m.
W
ith 12 million album sales to her name, two Golden Globes,
two Emmy Awards, two Actor’s Guild Awards, and a Billboard prize for selling the most TV soundtrack records in history for
the Ally McBeal TV series, Vonda Shepard truly is a global icon. In a
Hollywood moment that was years in the making, Vonda’s meteoric
rise to fame began when she caught the ear of television producer David E. Kelley, who was so captivated by her music that he vowed to use
it in his television show. That show was multi-award-winning comedy
drama Ally McBeal and overnight a musical star was born!
Her band features ultra-world-class musicians who have performed
all over the world with some of the top artists in the industry: her
guitar player performed with Tina Turner for many years, her bass
player with Bruce Springsteen, and her drummer with Sheryl Crow
and Smash Mouth. She just recently finished the first leg of her 20082009 international tour to packed venues throughout the world.
Vonda loves to perform live and is always a crowd pleaser. She performs a vast repertoire of popular songs. Some of the songs she performs include “Chain of Fools” (Aretha Franklin),“For Once in My Life”
(Stevie Wonder), “Born on the Bayou” (Creedence), “Proud Mary” (Tina Turner), and many more. For more info, visit www.vesperalley.com.

p.m., and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (ticket sales close 30 minutes prior to the end of each day).
Once again this year, a special ticket rate of 40 tickets for $35 will be

said co-chair Kelly Gesuero.
Rides will feature the GForce gravity hold ride, swings, race cars,
and face painting. For toddlers there will be tugs and train rides.
Between the backstage entertainment, Main Street entertainment,

Don’t forget to stop by on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a
Stop-Drop-N-Roll lesson at
