Harmonie Club History
On October 16, 1852, six men met to organize a community of congenial interests.
They called their group a “Gesellschaft” and hoped that by enlisting thirty or forty
friends and acquaintances they would be able to organize the second social club in
New York. The first and only one of record at that time was the Union Club.
The six founders envisioned a fraternity bound together by mutual social interests,
the chief of which at that time were song recitals and declamatory contests. The
Harmonie Club, true to its original name, devoted itself to communal singing and
group forensics.
Now, over one hundred and sixty years later, our membership can look back on our
quaint and modest beginnings and wonder about the simple social diversions that
brought and held the founders together. We’ve come a long way: German descent
no longer is a requirement for membership or employment. The basement bowling
alley is but a faint memory, as are: bedrooms on the upper floors, overseas jaunts
to St. Moritz, candlelight suppers on Sunday nights, as well as waiters in white
gloves carrying hot bread and relish trays.
Unchanged is the dining room designed by Stanford White, as well as other
impressive Club facilities. We still follow the longstanding tradition of inviting
prominent individuals from the worlds of politics, religion, sports, law, science,
business and the arts to speak at events at the Club.
Among the more noticeable changes is a lessened formality in dress code, wonderful new facilities (including a state of the art physical Fitness Center), and the
opening of membership to women.
We reflect upon the efforts of past members with pride and affection. Just as they
planned for those who would follow them, we, too, labor to leave our descendants
a vital and relevant entity, a community founded and grown in harmony.
Today we are proud of our diverse membership, very active in all the traditional
activities of Harmonie. While some of the atmosphere may be more casual in
keeping with the times, the enjoyment of the original interest of Harmonie
continues on for future generations.
Mission Statement
The Harmonie Club of New York will honor its heritage and traditions while providing our members and their families innovative programs, superior services and excellent facilities to meet their ever evolving social, dining and athletic desires.

Governance
The Harmonie Club is a member-owned club. A member-owned club permits its
members to control their club through the right to vote. The Harmonie Club facilities are operated and managed under the Board of Governors, which is elected by
the members. Members may be elected to volunteer in the various committees
that govern the Club. Non-Resident members are not permitted to vote.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee works with the General Manager and staff to oversee all
aspects of Club operations.
Board of Governors
The Board of Governors advises and sets all significant policies of the Club.
Finance Committee
The Finance Committee supervises the finances, accounting, external audit, internal controls, and information systems of the Club. It works with the General Manager and senior staff members to prepare annual budgets, plan for financing current activities and long-term capital needs, and monitor expenditures.
House Committee
The House Committee is responsible for the general supervision of the Clubhouse,
service and staff, furnishings and property, grounds, repairs and maintenance. It
formulates and enforces the House Rules of the Club, which include the Dress Code
and Rules of Conduct. The House Committee also investigates and approves recommendations concerning reciprocity with other private clubs around the world.
Admissions & Membership Committees
The Admissions Committee develops and implements plans to ensure a strong, stable, and dynamic membership. The Admissions Committee also gains the commitment and active participation of its fellow members in new member sponsorship.
The Membership Committee assists members in recruiting prospective candidates,
disseminates information on the Club, and focuses on outreach to new members.
The Membership Committee also works to provide Club management with insight
into members' needs and interests that can enhance member satisfaction and retain members.
Joining Club Committees
Members of The Harmonie Club are encouraged to volunteer to serve on Club
Committees. The presentations, lectures and celebrations produced by the
Club’s committees are an essential ingredient in the Harmonie experience.
Social Committees
Athletic: Responsible for the Fitness Center, facility equipment, fitness staff
and athletic programs.
Art: Arranges lectures and presentations at the Club, cultural sites in New
York and other cities.
Card: Coordinates daily card activity, various afternoon and evening
tournaments as well as lessons.
Entertainment: Enjoyable events are a major part of the Harmonie
experience. The Entertainment Committee arranges various themed events,
theater parties and trips to unique venues.
Forum: Topical information is important to our membership. The Forum
Committee arranges various functions with speakers and panels covering
Finance, Real Estate, Politics, National Security, Health and other information.
Junior: The Juniors have an active calendar of occasions geared towards
members age 40 and younger, including Thirsty Thursdays each month in the
Grill Room.
Library: The Club has an active book lending program. The Library
Committee procures the latest best sellers and the most interesting volumes.
Literary & Media: Sponsors all author visits, the Reading Group series and
journalists’ visits from various media outlets.
Music: Consistent with the original concept of Harmonie, music continues to
be an important part of the Harmonie Club experience. Noon-time concerts,
opera lecture series, and musical evenings are arranged throughout the year.
Spa: Oversees the operation and programs of the Pool, and Spa.
Young Families: This very spirited committee has activity almost every
week. Kids in Sports, Saturday afternoon events, and more.
In the Clubhouse
Dress Code
The House Committee has relaxed the dress code in recent years, however it is
expected that members and their guests observe appropriate dress when visiting
the Club.
A minimum of business casual is expected at all times for members and their
guests when spending time at the Club. Business casual is defined as a collared
shirt and slacks for men and comparable attire for women including dresses,
blouses, skirts and pants. Neat jeans are also acceptable. Shorts, t-shirts and
sneakers are never appropriate unless travelling to and from fitness areas.
4th Floor Grill Room/Bar: Neat jeans may be worn in all areas of the Grill
Room. Shirts must have collars (no t-shirts) and must be tucked in. Shorts,
sneakers or tennis shoes are not permitted. Jackets are not required, but
suggested. In the evenings, jackets must be worn in the carpeted section of the
dining area.
5th Floor Main Dining Room: Jackets are required except for Sunday Brunch
when neat collared long sleeve shirts and neat pressed jeans are acceptable;
sneakers are not permitted. At lunch, there is a casual area designated in the
Main Dining Room where jackets are not required.
Member Events: Men’s jackets and ties are required at all Club functions,
unless otherwise indicated.
Private Events: The dress code for private events may be dictated by the host.
However, a minimum of business casual is appropriate.

Making Reservations for an Event
If you wish to attend a Club event, please make reservations in advance. Since
events often fill up quickly, it is recommended that you make reservations as soon
as you know you will be attending.
To register:
1. Go to our website www.harmonieclub.org and login to your account. The
username and password are set up by the individual member the first time the
member visits the site.
2. Select ‘Events Calendar’ under ‘Member Central’.
3. Select the event that you wish to attend and follow the prompts to register for
that event.
4. You will receive an email confirming your RSVP.
You can also make your reservation by referencing the event, the event date, your
guests’ names (if any), and your member number by emailing
[email protected]. You will receive an email confirming your RSVP. If you
do not receive a confirmation email, please call Quint at 212.355.7402 to check on
your RSVP.
Cancellation Policy
Reservations cancelled by 3:00 pm one week (unless otherwise noted) prior to the
event will not be charged. Cancellation requests received after this time, as well as
all no-shows, are charged the full cost of the event. Out-of-Club ticketed events
(including, but not limited to, theatre events) are final sale and non-refundable. If
these events have a waiting list, every effort will be made to accommodate
members wishing to cancel by filling their reservations from the waiting list.
Signing for a Charge
When dining at Harmonie in either the Grill Room or the Main Dining Room, you
will be presented with a check at the end of the meal. Please confirm the
amount, member name and account on the check before signing. All charges will
appear on your monthly statement as a House Charge. Cash and credit cards are
not accepted at the bars or restaurants.
No Tipping Policy
The Club has a strict no tipping policy. Once a year, members are asked to contribute to the Holiday Gift Fund which recognizes the Club’s staff for their service
throughout the year. There is no obligation to contribute, but it is reasonable that
one should consider their use of the Club in making this decision.
Guests
Members may extend to persons in their immediate family—i.e., the spouse of a
member and his or her children up to the age of 21—the appropriate facilities of
the Clubhouse, subject, however, to special rules applicable to Spa and Fitness
Center use.
Members are encouraged to bring guests to the Club, including children. It is expected that the members will use the same high standard in introducing a guest
to the Club as they apply to inviting persons to their own home. Members are
asked to advise their guests regarding our dress code. If a member brings a guest
for Squash, Cards, the Fitness Center or Pool, the member is charged a $15 guest
fee. While in the Clubhouse, members are expected to accompany their guest at
all appropriate times and to all facilities, including the Spa, Fitness Center and
squash courts.

coat check can be found in the lobby to the right upon entering the building.
