Spring 2015
A bright outlook for Dún Laoghaire’s future
as BID marks productive first year...
This April marks one year since the establishment of the Dún Laoghaire Business
Improvement District. A tremendous amount has been achieved in the past 12
months thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of members who have embraced
the opportunity to have a collective voice to develop and improve our town and
attract new business and footfall.

BID successfully campaigned to prevent the scheduled closure of the Dún Laoghaire
court house conducting research for Court Services highlighting the devastating effects the
closure of the courthouse would have on businesses in the area.
BID launched a comprehensive website (dunlaoghaire.ie) marketing what the town has
to offer both to prospective retailers and consumers, with a full listing of available office
and retail premises as well as attractive vouchers and discounts encouraging people to
pay a visit.
•
Over 900 people have committed to shop regularly in the town as members of the Shop
Local Initiative ‘Destination Dún Laoghaire’.
•
BID negotiated that the licence for Sandwich Boards and Street Furniture will be free
of charge – more information on http://www.dunlaoghaire.ie/do-business/useful-links/

Big plans ahead... What next?
A huge amount has been achieved in Dún Laoghaire over
the past 12 months, significantly so as a result of the
participation of BID members. Over 70 volunteers worked
across different working groups and organisational
committees, which is instrumental to bringing about real
and positive change and development for the town.
Top 5 BID initiatives planned for the next
12 months...
• New business! We are on track to welcome a further fifty
new businesses to Dún Laoghaire by the beginning of
2016. At the end of last year, we published a 15-page ‘How
to’ guide on ‘Doing Business in Dún Laoghaire’ which
was to facilitate the influx of new businesses. We need
to find suitable tenants for the remaining retail units in our
town, especially the M&S unit. Engage with the owners of
Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre and Dunnes Stores to
secure a long-term solution for both premises.
• 2020 Vision - the 5 year strategic plan for Dún
Laoghaire – this April at a major conference in the Royal
Marine Hotel, we will launch a 5-year strategic plan for
Dún Laoghaire – the 2020 Vision – a strategy to
transform the town into a thriving commercial and
shopping hub.
• Smart Parking for Dún Laoghaire Town – introduce
electronic signage and an electronic parking guidance
system, initiate more parking promotions and value for
money parking! (see page 5 for more information)
• Footfall footfall footfall! We will be giving visitors
plenty of reason to visit Dún Laoghaire with the launch
of a coffee festival, a dine in Dún Laoghaire campaign,
an enhanced Christmas festival, the bigger and better
year 2 contemporary music festival – just some of
the highlights.
• Tackle anti-social behavior and find a solution for the
Drug Treatment Clinic – engage with the HSE and the
Local Policing Forum & establish a citizens ‘hotline’.

Wings for Life World Run Coming to Dún Laoghaire
On May 3, 2015, you can join thousands of runners of all
abilities in the Wings for Life World Run. Globally, the fun gets
underway when local races start simultaneously – whether it’s
day or night, spring or autumn – at 11am UTC, and 30 minutes
later, Catcher Cars start to chase the racers, slowly but surely,
until they pass all of the participants and end their race. There’s
no static finish line, no set distance. Everyone finishes. And the
last female and male athlete to be caught by the Catcher Cars
will be awarded the title of global Wings for Life World Run
champions.
3RD MAY 2015
With 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the Wings for
Life foundation, the Wings for Life World Run is about raising
awareness and money to find a cure for spinal cord injury.
For the first time, this year's world run will also come to Dún
Laoghaire. Starting at 12 noon from the centre of Dún Laoghaire
town, participants will run south towards Bray and Greystones
where they will eventually find themselves amongst the beautiful
scenery of the Wicklow Mountains.

The average cost for one hour parking in Dún Laoghaire town is
approx. €2.00. As of 1st March 2014 on-street parking rates in the
town are €1.50 per hour. There is, however, a three hour time
limit. See Table below for Pricing comparison; please note this is
subject to change and check directly with Car Park to confirm
current rates.
The Dún Laoghaire BID Company will endeavor to:
- Establish a dialogue between the business community and all
car park operators (inc DLRCOCO and Harbour Company)
- Introduce an electronic parking guidance system
- Introduce a ‘smart’ parking system – including app and demand
driven pricing
- Negotiate a further reduction in pay & display parking rates
- Review the hours of operation for pay and display in the town
centre (between 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday should be
sufficient as there is no pressure on traffic management outside
these times).
Dún Laoghaire BID encourages DLRCOCO to introduce
promotional rates (minimum 12 months duration) in order to
attract footfall back to the town and compete with other out of
town centres who offer free parking and promotional rates. For
Example: €2 for 3 hours & Free on Saturday after 12pm.

parking in Dún Laoghaire to [email protected].

Record Number of Cruise Passengers in
2015 for Dún Laoghaire
In 2011, the Dún Laoghaire Cruise Stakeholder Group was formed to bring
together various stakeholders with an interest in developing cruise business
for the greater Dún Laoghaire area. Today this stakeholder group includes
Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council
and Dún Laoghaire BID. The Dún Laoghaire Cruise Stakeholder Group
engaged in a vigorous marketing campaign to enable Dún Laoghaire to tap
into this growing market. Dún Laoghaire welcomed two cruise calls in 2012
with 140 passengers on board. 2013 saw 13 cruise vessels use the facilities at
Dún Laoghaire, with the highlight of the season being the visits of Cunard’s
Queen Mary II and Queen Victoria. This year already 22 cruise vessels have
been confirmed to visit Dún Laoghaire. The size of these ships is such that
they will bring a record nearly 90,000 passengers and crew.
The Cruise Stakeholder Group is currently working on a hospitality
programme and we will be in touch with more details in due course.
