So many dancers were leaving Y Squares early, TARAS & MAURIE BERLINRUT
decided to make the last few club minutes extra special. While the dancers
circle up and then interlock arms to the record "I'll See You In My Dreams"
club caller Brian Fugere & suer Peg Tristram join together in singing the
lovely words to the sane,- Many of thedancers join b Lire singing, but
softly as all enjoy the harmonizing duo. At a signal from Brian all Grand
Right & Left and say "Good night" to another. More & more dancers are now
remaining to join in this most meaningful end of a wonderful evening of
good fun and fellowship.

Jim & Joyce Kelly, NNJSDA Presidents
Here it is 1990! Time surely flies by we
already have our airline tickets for the National Square
Dance Convention which is in Memphis June 28, 29 & 30, and
hope to see you there. If you need information give us or
Doc & Peg Tirrell a call.
The 1989 year ended with a fantastic Mini-Festival (our 15th festival).
Our sincere thanks to all who helped with this dance, expecially John &
Mary Aquino and Fred & Kathryn Hill. This, or any dance, could riot have
been such a success without the dedication of the folks we have in this
wonderful world of square dancing. Thank you all again. There were over
50 squares at the Mini-Festival dancing to Dean Crowell of TX and Tom Rinker of MA in the Plus Hall and our own Brian Fugere in the MAinstream Hall.
Steve & Wendy Bradt cued the Rounds. The Bradts surprised us with 2 spectacular dance routines, costumes and all. There were 29 clubs represented,
17 clubs having one square or more in attendance.
As we write this letter, Hal & Florence Margo, NNJSDA 2nd VP, are busy
planning our first dance of 1990; our student level dance. We hope you
supported the new dancers and "Angeled". We remember when we were taking
lessons how important our Angels were to us and how we looked for their
support as we ventured to our first few dances. Our Thanks to Belles &
Beaux for changing their dance date which enabled us to move the student
dance so it did not conflict with the Super Bowl.
This is the time of the year when your Club needs your support. We
realize how busy everyone is, but please say "yes" when asked to participate in your Club's activities. If all of us just danced, there would be
no square dancing. The NNJSDA Executive Board and Committee Officers are
always available to assist you with information or counseling. Please
support your club.
Look for us, we are hoping to see you at the New Jersey Convention,
March 24; the NNJSDA Special March 3] with Bill Harrison; and of course
at your Club.

15th NNJSDA MINI-FESTIVAL
The Mini-Festival held on Nov. 12, 1989, in Livingston, NJ was a great
success with over 50 squares in attendance. The calling of Tom Rinker,
Dean Crowell, and Brian Fugere along with rounds by Steve & Wendy Bradt
was a major contributing factor for this great dance. At times there
were 40 squares in the Plus Hall and 10 squares in the Mainstream Hall.
During the dinner break, we had approximately 12 squares dancing Al and
8 squares dancing A2 with Cl drawing 3 squares. Steve & Wendy Bradt put
on a fantastic round dance exhibition. Their dancing style and routines
along with their outfits were terrific. Of course, none of this would
happen without you the dancer and all the help from people like Fred/
Kathryn Hill, Gene/Jean Koenig, Jim/Joyce Kelly and Dick/Shirley White
along with countless others that helped make this dance one of the best.
John/Mary Aquino, Chairpersons
Thank you all very much.
L.U.S.T.
L.U.S.T. - Let Us Speak Together - will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, 1990.
This year we would like to present as many topics as time will allow. We
would like to hear from you the dancer as to what subjects you would like
to have. If we have enough interest, we will find a speaker. We are planning to have certain topics repeated during the day so as to have as many
people as possible attend all subjects. Let us hear from you.

we appreciate tne many nice words readers nave saia to us aster
reading page 54 of the last issue. to answer several questions most
often asked...NO, althougn we are retiring as Editors, we are not retiring from the activity.... nor are we moving away.
But there comes a time in everyone's life when it is change time and now seems to be the right time. Standing in the wings are another
overworked, tremendously dedicated competent couple who are willing to
become editors. They will, in all probability, make a number of cnanges
in GRAND SQUARE. And these need to be done. We are in the age of computers. It is only fair that the new editors have the choice of machine
and software.
But permit us to digress a bit. When GRAND SQUARE began in '59 it
was done in the style of that period - printed on one side of 8 1/2 x 11
paper. Succeeding issues were printed on both sides with a little club
news added and an occasional picture. The next editor kept the same
format with more clubs news, some articles and lots of line drawings.
When we were appointed editors after our year as NNJSDA Presidents, the
Board purchased, for the editor's use, a used Smith Corona electric
typewriter for $90 and gave us their blessings! We had a few new ideas
which a fellow camper/dancer, Charlie Bogart, helped bring into reality.
The format was changed to the present size with the first issue 16
pages! One thing that has never changed tho, is the belief that GRAND
SQUARE's primary purpose is communication and transmission of information within our square dance activity. As the NNJSDA has matured, so
has the activity...and so has GRAND SQUARE. It has been, and still is,
an interesting challenge and enjoyable learning experience.
The computer age has brought, and is bringing, about many new and
exciting possibilities for GRAND SQUARE. The publication needs an
Editor and Associate Editors who have the time and ability to sort thru
all these new conveniences. As our responsibilities as Executive Secretary of ROUNDALAB have exploded this past year. we realized the time of
decision was here. We know you will give Kathy & Charlie Porter just as
much support and encouragement as you nave given us.
After much research tne Porters have made a number of deuisions on
equipment and now are in the process of rearranging their home and lives
for this new challenge. The next few months will be a real learning
experience as they prepare for their new role in the sici activity next
fall. Please give them time to grow - just as we were given - those 25
years ago. We have the utmost confidence in their abilities. We are so
lucky they are willing to get involved!
The 1990's will be an exciting decade!
Doc & I look forward to
it

AL'e'MO SQUARES -- Brooklyn, NY
2 & 4 Sundays
As we go into our winter season we look forward with great anticipation
to the many exciting events coming up. Our students are doing nicely under
the tutelage of Frank Pulice. [ED NOTE: By the way, Alemo's reporter
serves Alemo in dual capacity as Walter is also class coordinator.]
In December, we held our annual "Make a Child Happy" Dance. It was also the date when we opened our dances to students. There were Class Level
tips - as well as Mainstream and Plus.
We look forward to the NNJ's January Mid-Term Dance and the Convention
at Trenton in March. We expect to have a minimum of two squares at each.
We especially look forward to the comradery of the Convention and an
opportunity to renew acquaintances from last year, as well as members of
clubs which we've met during the year.

BELLES & BEAUX -- Glen Rock, NJ
1.3 & 5 Wednesdays
(MS)
Coleman School, Pinelyn Rd.
The season is several months old now and we are off to a good start for
1989-90. In November, over two squares gathered at the Broderick's home
in River Edge and enjoyed a chicken dinner Italian style. Then, everyone traveled to Westwood, NJ to raid SEE SAW SQUARES, which was using the
western Wheelers regular location for this night. The caller was Bill Wagner, who called a wonderful mainstream dance - using many interesting formations. Late in November, we had our annual Chinese Auction. There were
many great items and no one left empty handed. Once again we had a chance
to dance to a blossoming new caller, Dick Mazziotti.
We invite all who enjoy friendly and lively mainstream dancing -- to
join us at the Coleman School on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesdays.

CIRCLE EIGHTS -- Haworth, NJ
(MS)
St. Lukes Episcopal Church
4th Friday
Were you present among the "Turkey Trotters" on November 24th? In
spite of the festivities of the previous day - a number of dancers turned
out to shed a few newly acquired pounds !!
In October, we raided Tenafly Squares with two plus squares and held
our Halloween Costume Ball. The Grand March included Charlie Chaplin, two
Draculas, Morticia, a tree, a Garden Service Man, Cleopatra, Li'l Orphan
Annie, a cave man and his woman, a Hawaiian couple, a cat, Lady Bug, Little
pumpkin and a Crayola. A good time was had by all.
Class co-ordinators report enthusiastic new dancer turnouts. The first
Tenderfeet Class Level Dance will be held in Haworth in January. Keep on
dancing and we hope you all had a Happy Holiday Season.

COUNTRY PROMENADERS -- Edison, NJ
Herbert Hoover School, Jackson Ave.
So far this year our club dances and activities have been very rewarding.
We have been raided by four clubs, and in turn have raided four clubs...
thanks to our raid chair-persons Lenny/Millie Swearer, who deserve a well
donefor their efforts. A recent event brought home just how much good a
square dance club can do; this was a demo the club did at The Edison Nursing
Home. Several of the dancers said afterward they felt inspired by the joy
expressed by the wheel-chair bound residents, saying it was the high point
of their dancing this year. Our 2nd VP's, Malcom Wolfman and Elsie Bylockie
had the responsibility for making the demo arrangements with the Edison
Nursing Home...a job well done. Our club is sporting a new raid banner thanks to my better half. Our PLUS square dance class is successfully nearing completion on Tuesday nights in Edison High School with Dan Koft doing
the teaching.
There was some confusion at our November dance, when several people arrived to find the school locked and dark. Thanks to the quick action of our
past-presidents, Frank/Helen Cavanaugh, all turned out just fine. Our presidents, Mary/Joe Kapec wish to thank all members of the club for their cooperation with this year's refreshment program. Condolences to Ray and
Joann Muller on the passing of Ray's mother.

In Memory
See Saw Squares sadly misses our own Jeanne Kupferman who lost her
valiant battle with cancer in August 1989. We share her loss with
Irwin and their sons and all the Kupferman family. There is an empty

COVERED BRIDGE SQUARES -- Nutley, NJ
(+)
Radcliffe School, 379 Bloomfield Ave.
Our class is doing very well under the able guidance of Dot Loewenstein.
Class co-ordinators, Jacques/Rose Godfrin are doing a terrific job of running the class as well....!
The Halloween Dance with John Kaltenthaler, was held at Nutley's Recreation Dept. Lots of interesting characters attended and the top prize
for costumes went to Russ/Laura Safar, Presidents of Cross Trails. They
were unrecognizable in their hobo outfits. First and second runners-up
were: Hazel Schaller & Frank Zintl. Hazel was dressed as "Minnie Pearl"
and Frank was the zombie waiter in the "Munsters". Larry Davenport and
his lovely wife came with the Kaltenthalers, so Larry and John called a
tip together. Real good !! Twenty club members got together and raided
Cloverleafs in November for the Tom Miller Special. It's always such a
pleasure to dance when Tom calls! Some club members even returned two
days later to dance with Tom again... this time at J & M Squares.
Congratulations are in order for the Duda's - on the birth of a new
granddaughter down in Texas. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Frank
Zintl on the loss of his mother. Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and
we would like to wish all of you a healthy, happy NEW YEAR. Looking forward to seeing you on the dance floor in 1990... (If any dancers would
like to save the yellow Shop-Rite tapes for Betty Olier, she would really
appreciate it very much. Betty would like to obtain an Apple Computer
for her classroom).

CROSS TRAIL SQUARES -- Caldwell, NJ
(+)
Lincoln School, Crane Street
Cross Trail Square people have had an exciting and busy fall. They
put on an exhibition in August at the United Club picnic in Cedar Grove.
We had several other clubs joining us for this event. In September, we
again put on an exhibit at the Roseland Historical Society Fair, with two
squares. In November, 9 couples enjoyed a turkey dinner at Fairfield Reformed Church & then went raiding the M.T. Squares in Avenel.
Since we all love to eat, we couldn't pass up a roast beef dinner held
at the St. Agnes Church in Little Falls in Nov. Thank goodness for exercise and square dancing. We raided See Saw Squares in Upper Saddle River.
With all of this enthusiasm-it's no wonder that we have 22 people taking
lessons this year. We hope they will join us next year.
Our New Year's Eve Dance at St. Aloysious Church in Caldwell is open to
any square dancer. See our ad !! We wish you all a happy holiday season.

F.A.D. SQUARES -- Maywood, NJ
(MS)
Amer. Leg. Hall, 113 E. Passaic St.
Seven squares of M/S dancers enjoyed the November Fashion Show, which
included studentmodels from Covered Bridge Squares - as well as F.A.D.
Squares. Two squares of students visited (from Spinning Wheels, Belles
& Beaux, Covered Bridge Squares and F.A.D.) and danced an exhibition tip
between M/S tips - this brought the total dancers to NINE squares. The
Fashion Show was sponsored by the Yellow Rock Shop anu ScveLai non-dancers
were also present, to view square dancing (possible new students!) and the
fun it offers to everyone.
By the time this hits print, our club caller should have returned from
a three week trip to Israel, with a stopover in London on the way home to work on final details for the group trip scheduled for summer 1990 (see
ad elsewhere)....
December found us with a guest caller and our holiday dance provided an
opportunity for our own class
show their proficiency at calls through
#48 !!! well ahead of the normal schedule of 48 calls by February, they
passed this goal in November. Be sure to look for their bright yellow badges at class level dances; ours will be in January. We know almost every
Sundaywill have a class level dance --- somewhere in our area.
Gond dancers are frequentdancers. Like any other skill, it must be
practiced.... We want to see all of the students on the dance floor as often
as pubsible.

The Harmony Dancers plan to start the year off in the appropriate manner by dancing out the old year and dancing in the New Year. A great time
is to be had by all at the festive New Years Eve dance. We owe a great
big THANKS to Mickey & Rosemary Biggs and all the others who were in charge
for the evening.
The hectic holiday season is over and we're ready to settle down to some
serious dancing each week to work off those extra pounds - the ones we picked up during the holidays. But what a fun way to burn off those calories..
Speaking of pounds, we all owe our refreshment chairpersons, Jean/Leon
Richtmyre and Shirley/Jim West, a great vote of thanks for the excellent organization of our refreshment schedule. It's no easy task to keep the refreshments flowing for thirsty and hungry dancers.

HIX & CHIX -- Elmwood Park, NJ
(1/3 MS; 2/4/5 +)
VFW Hall. 6 Veterans Place
The return of fall and cooler weather started us off to another memor
able year of dancing. Thanks to the excellent tutelage of Dick Pasvolsky
and the enthusiasm of Frank and Allana Barr, wP have a mainstream and a
plus class well under-way. The new dancers, almost four squares strong,
are doing a terrific job with the help of our dedicated angels and we are
all looking forward to squaring up with them. The plus class, too, although fewer in number, is making up for it in ability.
Our Halloween party brought out the usual creativity and imaginative
costumes at both the club and plus class. Out of the ordinary, though,
was one mysterious personage - who made the rounds treating everyone at
Hix & Chix - while they tried, often futilely to identify the personality
behind the mask. November was ushered in by our covered dish supper with
each culinary effort more outstanding than the last. Needless to say, we
needed lots of dancing that night. We were also happy to welcome back Frank Boss, after his recent hip replacement. Another annual November favorite was our Marshall Flippo Special, as always a sell-out event/super
dance. Twenty of our club members raided Big-D, the end of September and
a couple weeks later 4 peripatetic couples joined a group traveling to
Hawaii. Can't keep us down on the farm! In November, we enjoyed the very
pleasant company of Lakeland Squares when they joined us on a raid.
As this is being written our thoughts and prayers are with our treasurer,
Mary Bielski, for recovering health.
Hix & Chix members wish one and all of our fellow square-dancers
a New Year filled with good health and much happiness.

Hope everyone had a happy Holiday season and are full of pleasant memories. Now, it's time to begin the new decade with square dancing. We're

Back in October, the Reelers had a farewell party for Jack & Pat Beyer.
They have left New Jersey for the sunny south of North Carolina. We're
certainly going to miss their smiling faces on the dance floor. When Kuntry Kuz'ns had their final farewell special in November, the Reelers attended with 221/2 couples. It was a great dance and everyone enjoyed themselves very much - we're going to miss those specials.

The dictionary defines winter as the season between autumn and spring,
comprising in the Northern hemisphere - usually the months of December,
January and Tohtliary (the colder half of the ye;Ar). But 1 n ihp world of
square dancing, it's the period of comraderie, good cheer and lots of dancing. Our winter dances have been well attended by members and guests as
was our Christmas-Chanukah dance. This fall, we had a successful raid at
Staten Squares. Many of our dancers attended the NNJ mini-festival in
Livingston.

judges had their work cut out for them trying to pick the winners. Top
prize went to our talented magician and his assistant, Peter and Jean Kilzer, "good show". It's still a mystery as to whatever happened to those
Russians. Did you make them invisible, Peter? It's for certain no one saw
them on the night of their anticipated visit. Our annual Pie Night was
it's usual delicious success. Seven squares braved the tornado-filled day
to sample and stuff themselves on the bountiful array of pies. No one left
hungry that night !! The holiday season is now upon us and we look forward
to some jolly dancing this December. Of special fun will be our annual Amateur Callers' Night, with special emcee, Herb Conklin. We look forward to
some fine calling by some very talented future callers.
Lakeland Squares would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our
Square Dance friends a Happy and Healthy 1990 ! It's hard to believe that
we will shortly be moving into a new decade...a new beginning. A chance
for each of us to make a special New Year's resolution to participate to
the fullest in this wonderful activity of ours and to help recruit new dancers whenever possible. Let's make the 1990's the best S/D decade ever !

1 & 3 Sat.
Since the last Grand Square report, we have celebrated most of the major
winter holidays. It is our hope that each of you enjoyed them as much as
we did. Our dances have been well attended which, needless to say, pleases
us very much. Being advocates of the 1 to 6 ratio of prevention to cure,
we will try to keep doing the good things.
Our raids led by the Koveds, is a good thing - our line-up of fine callers is a good thing - Peg/Joe Dockry, our Round Dance cuers and leaders/
teachers of our Round Dance club have been responsible for many new friends
regularly attending our dances and THAT IS A GOOD THING and we hope that
our attitude toward our guests pleases them because that is the bottom line
of all good things. We would love to have you visit us any 1st or 3rd Sat.
THAT WOULD BE A VERY GOOD THING.

Our classes are well under way with 4 enthusiastic couples meeting every
Wednesday night at the Appleby School in Spotswood. The A-P-D workshop
that precedes the novice class has nearly 3 squares of us trying to overcome gender distinction (except for YELLOW ROCKS). Many of our A-P-D dancers help out as angels.
We have started off the season with some very talented callers from
PA and New York. Carl Hanks, Gleason Crumling, Ed Foote and Glenn Matthew
all reside in the Keystone State and Steve Forman comes from the Island of
Staten in New York. Our next few callers hail from Ohio, Connecticut,
Florida and Delaware.
Our Brown Bag Masquerade in honor of Halloween brought out the latent
creativity of many Merri-Eights; some looked better with the bags on! Over
20 families participated in our pot luck dinner, where everybody enjoyed
the opposite of a well-balanced, low-calorie meal.
We conducted our first raid of the season in November at the Y-Squares
with Brian Fugere calling in Chinese. Several more raids are planned.
Free dance tickets were pre.sented to Merri-Eights who participated in
four or more demos this past summer and fall. Those honored were: Julius
Bodnar, Fran/Ray Giegerich, Paula/Jerry Mosher, Ann/Harry Sorenson, and
Debbie Walker. We hope to see many more of our members earn this recognition next season.

From Everyone at Mountain Squares, best wishes for a happy and healthy
1990 and remember your most important resolution - keep on dancing !!!
Member Loretta Hartford has been missing from the dance floor due to
illness and we hope her quiet smile will be back with us soon. Meantime,
we are glad that John has come along to dance and keep in touch. We hear
that J & M Squares' A-2 class is progressing well and we look forward to
meeting the class members shortly.
We have had good attendance at our last few dances and Joe (Landi) has
been putting us through our paces with some varied and interesting choreography. Remember, the welcome mat is always out at Mountain Squares and
we do hope you will join us for an evening of fun at A-2.

OCEAN WAVES
-- Staten Island, NY
(MS/a- tips)
1 & 3 Fridays
Christ Methodist Church, 1890 Forest Ave.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! First, to Isle Squares and
Richmond Dancers for raiding us on Nov. 17th and Dec. 1st. respectively
and increasing our coffers. Second, to the R.I.O.S. class for their
attendance at our first Student Level Dance. Third, to great callers
like (among others) club caller, Dick Pasvolsky, and local boy, Steve
Forman, who "go with the flow" of the Ocean Waves craziness. And last,
but definitely not least, the hard working, very supportive, small but
important group of members of Ocean Waves. This "Ship of Angels" keeps
us afloat, guides newcomers to square dancing through the murky seas of
dance confusion, and helps them practice dancing so they can dock safely
and confidently in the 3 plus "ports" (clubs) on Staten Island. Without
out little mainstream "Tugboat" it's just possible some new travelers
would be lost at sea and never make it to their destination.

RAMAPO SQUARES -- Pompton Lakes, NJ
(A-2)
Christ Church, 400 Ramapo Ave.
We wish everyone a super terrific New Year. By the time you read this,
our New Year's Eve party will be a wonderful memory, with Hugh Jones calling. 1989 ended with some excellent guest callers and as always the round
dancers enjoy the cueing of Doc and Peg Tirrell.
Alan Ball has recovered from a broken ankle and we are glad to see him
back on the dance floor. We are looking forward to a change in format at
Ramapo for the 1990 year. Watch for flyers ! ! ! Our callers will be teaching a different C-1 call at each dance. It looks like fun! Come dance
with us. Our "Snowbirds" have all left us - to dance away the winter in the
sunny south and to visit our many former members who have retired there.
Remember the welcome mat is always out at Ramapo, the friendly club.

RICHMOND DANCERS --Staten Island, NY
All

2 & 4 Saturdays
Our Halloween Dance was filled with creatively costumed dancers: Lady
Godiva, complete with horse; the Baron & Baroness Von Ghoul from the
Transylvania Twirlers; Dracula himself in addition to a whole host of
other clever costumed dancers. The dance was spooktacularly chaired by
Les/Brenda Meyerberg with committee members Sam/Grace Ippolito and All
Lucille Ricca. We've been busy raiding too. Staten Square Set's Octoberfest, Valley Squares in Nov. and Ocean Waves with our R.I.O.S. Students
on Dec. 1st. The Richmond Dancers could not have been more pleased and
surprised when John/Mary Aquino arrived at our Nov. 11th dance with Texas
Caller, Dean Crowell who was calling the Mini-Festival the next day. Our
caller for the evening was Bill Heyman and he asked Dean to call a tip.
Mary sold quite a few more Mini-Fest tickets after that tip. Our best
get well wishes to Clara Friscia who is back in the hospital and to Sue
Valentino who is recovering from surgery.

RUTGERS PROMENADERS -- New Brunswick, NJ
(MS)
2 & 4 Thursdays
Busch Student Center, Piscataway
The Promenaders don't seem to be able to make it through a year without some changes being made. Regretfully, one of our officers had to
withdraw from office, so we now have a new slate. Carol Levi is President, Sherrey Lynn Wood is VP and Russ Janiger is Sec/Treas. We wish all
of them luck, and promise our support for the rest of the year.
Due to scheduling problems, our dances still have no permanent home.
Please call one of the numbers listed below for information and directions.
We would like to thank Y-SQUARES for raiding our November dance. This
was our "class/club" level dance, so our class members not only got to see
our club in action, they were also treated to a raid. A good time was
definitely had by all.
The first delivery in the recent Promenader "Baby Boom" has been made.
Congratulations to Kathy and Jeremy Roden on the birth of Sean Jeffrey
Pearce. We wish them all the best of luck.

[Ed Note] Reading about Taras & Maurie Berlinrut's ending to a Y Squares
dance on page 2, brought back memories of M.T. Squares in the 60's when
club caller Barney Hartenstein & his wife Virginia ended every dance in
similar fashion....leaving all with a warm glow of friendship. Several
callers we know do occasionally wind up an evening with a Good Night Grand
Right & Left. We always use a special "Good Night Waltz" mixer to wind up
round dance classes at our home.

SEE SAW SQUARES -- Upper Saddle River, NJ
1 & 3 Saturdays
Old Stone Ch. Ed. Ctr, E. Saddle River Rd
See Saws had bad news this past month. Laurie Mazziotti lost her mother
and our membership extends heartfelt sympathies. On a happier side, Joan/
Hank Nahass, our Presidents from Jan. through June 1990, just returned from
Hawaii. What was under those grass skirts? Heard you had a great time...
Congratulations are also in order to this reporter: two of three sons were
married. Steven was married in Louisville, KY in December and Arthur was
married in August. Of course, the proud papa (me) was strutting around
like a rooster. This reporter likes to include more of this kind of good
and unfortunately bad news occasionally so that everybody in the S/D community will be able to celebrate with us or sympathize with us. Please
pass along tidbits of information to this reporter.
We continue to have lots of fun square dancing. We just want to add
something about our displaced dance of early November, a M/S dance called
by Bill Wagner - called "Meet the Presidents". In addition to the Presidents (11 of Lhem), we also had a raid from Belles and Beaux and everyone
had great fun. See Saws conducted a snap raid with two sets, on Cloverleafs the Friday preceding our Presidents' Dance. We danced to the excellent & fast calling of Tom Miller. Pelham Promenaders were also raiding.
A lot of laughing, a lot of giggling & very little breaking down. Thanks
Cloverleafs and Tom Miller.
As of this writing, we are looking forward to our Chinese Auction and
later our Christmas Party where dancers are asked to donate unwrapped toys
...these will be turned over to the Dept. of Social Services for distribution to the needy and underprivileged kids.
We'll let you know in the next issue whether real snow joined Joe Fazekas at our January Snow Flake Ball !!!! Come and see for yourself.

SOLITAIRES -- WestOrange, NJ
(MS)
W. Orange Community House, 242 Main St.
2 & 4 Sundays
Solitaires has had the pleasure of dancing to a wide variety of callers
so far this year. Our callers are to be commended for the many creative
things they do - to get everyone in the hall dancing, even when we're a
couple short for a square.
We wish a speedy recovery to Mary Bielski and Bob Jemison, who are both
missed at our dances. We hope to see them real soon. Solitaires would
also like to acknowledge the stalwarts who attended our first dance in
November and then, danced off to the Mini Festival !! That's a real show
of support for New Jersey square dancing!

Halloween!!! What a night. Rainy during the day and the kids were all
dressed up with only the houses on the street to visit. But that night...
there was the Spinning Wheels Halloween Dance. We had jail birds, witches,
a patch quilt---and our presidents. If reverse dressing were all the rage,
this was it. Tom looked delightful in his beautiful red dress, Pennsylvania Dutch Cap, socks (unheard of for Tom) and sneakers. Dolores, for
the evening, wore Lhe pants and danced the lead. Thanksgiving has come &
gone and the holiday season is not far beyond. Bob Robinson is putting
our class of 22 students through their paces to prepare them for the first
class dance in December. Since there are no dances on evenings when the
schools are closed, this means that Spinning Wheels resumed dancing the
second Monday in the New Year. Double check our dance listing & you will
find that we have added rounds and line dances to our schedule. But if
there is snow, it may be a "no go"...so don't hesitate, please call ahead.

I & 3 Saturdays
If you attended our Oktoberfest you'll know what I mean. This event
was a huge success and the accolades are still coming in. From the beautiful "Wilkommen" sign that greeted everyone as they entered our hall - to the knockwurst & sauerkraut, homemade German potato salad and apple
strudel...it certainly was a night to remember. Of course, with a great
caller like John Kaltenthaler calling a tip in German, how could we miss?
The Didleys and the Wielands (yours truly) who co-chaired this party were
happy to see everyone enjoy themselves so much. One of the door prizes
was a $50 gift certificate donated by the Hofbrau House Restaurant in Atlantic Highlands. Marie Dudley was instrumental in obtaining this very
generous donation. We thank all the out-of--state and local clubs who have
visited us, especially our good neighbors, the Richmond Dancers, who raided us with an impressive four squares.
We all know that One Square is Fair at an Association dance and the
Statens had two tall squares at our 15 Lb Mini-Festival.OuL banner was
proudly carried by our new inspirations Red & Louis Stevenson, our club
presidents. This made one of our favorite longtime members, Sila Dell'
Angelo, very happy and when Sila's happy - we know we're doing something
right. But wait, we're not done yet. Staten celebrated their 41st Anniversary with Brian Fugere calling wonderful tips. The Dell'Angelos and
their committee provided us with a real treat - something that many of us
had never seen before..."The Black Light Dance", a Staten original. The
Attanasios, Blaines, Dell'Angelos and the Johnsens glowed in the dark as
they executed their square dancing skills to perfection. I'm sure many
of us would love to take part in this at a future event.
A healthy, prosperous New Year to all our members and square dancing
friends.

2 & 4 Fridays
Halloween time on the Sussex Spinners dance floor was full of spooks,
clowns, big babies and cowboys. Prizes were awarded to all of those who
dressed up for the celebration. New Year's Eve 1990 was the 20th Anniversary of the Gala event. John Kaltenthaler, Larry Davenport and Al and
Gail Spinks - led the celebration of the new year.
The raids to the Kittatinny Rangers, Ironia Reelers and the Leisure
Squares were very successful. We were welcomed to these dances by smiling
faces. We were very sorry to have to cancel our classes - due to a fire
at our Alpine School. See you at Sussex County Vocational School for the
greatest dances of 1990 !!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR.

We had a surprise caller for our November Dance! The scheduled caller,
Vince Anthony, had a death in the family and was unable to be with us. Instead, we had Steve Forman from Staten Island, who gave us a very lively
evening -- with some unusual combinations and a new call "Ferris Cycle" which he created on the way to the dance. And Herb Rivkin did a great job
putting the round dancers through their paces. The students in our New
Milford Tenderfeet classes are progressing rapidly and before long will be
out for their mid-term dance with us.
Did you come to our Cookie Carnival and Snowman's Ball??? If not, we
hope you made a New Year's Resolution to come to the Pie Night and to the
Leprechaun's Leap dance. Look for our ad and flyers. Our new location
isn't that hard to find. Be brave and c'mon over !!! You'll be glad you

Bryan School, Brookside Ave.
Our "Share the Bounty" dance was a sea of blue and white with three
plus squares of raiders from Spinning Wheels, led by Pres. Delores Gesumaria and Tom Elm, Jr. Class teacher, Bob Robinson and his lovely wife,
all marched to WHEN THE SAINTS COME MARCHING IN, their heads topped with
glittering gold and silver hats -- stunning!
We are very sorry to hear that our Pres. George Meyer had broken his
leg. Be careful George and mend quickly, we miss you! We hope to see
you back on the dance floor by the time this issue comes out.
Thanks to T T members, guests and Spinning Wheels who donated 4 boxes
of food items to be distributed to Cresskill's needy. This worthwhile
cause was started four years ago by the Rellingers -- good job.
Our students are progressing nicely under Bill Heyman's tutelage. They
will be dancing soon - let's all come out and support them warmly.
Congratulation to our treasurer, Fran Wadel, for stepping into the callers circle at a Glen Rock Barn Dance.
Don't forget our February LOVE PIE night - LOVE to see you

It's hard to believe that with the end of November, five dances are
already behind us. They have been good evenings of dancing, well attended and with at least one raid for each evening. Several nights had special
themes with the November TURKEY SHOOT a great success. Everyone enjoyed
taking his/her turn blasting away at a Duck Hunt Video game while one real
sharpshooting Raider - bagged a perfect twenty ducks to take home the evening's prize of a 14 pound turkey!
We were glad to see Len Campbell at our Thanksgiving dance and are very
happy to hear that Emma's recovery from knee surgery is going well.
Jeff and Katie Davis have joined Valley after completing Valley sponsored MS and Plus lessons. Welcome home.
Our raiding schedule remains strong. We have returned the favor seven
(7) times by November's end. Let's all keep up the good work and support
our activity.

It's working! It's working! What's working? The Progressive PLUS
workshops at every Warren Wheelers dance. At the beginning of each dance,
president Jim Breslin, supplies the caller for the evening with a list of
all PLUS movements that have been taught so far, the caller then reviews
these movements and adds one or two new ones (depending on the complexity).
All PLUS movements thus taught and reviewed are then incorporated into the
dance for the evening. As a result, we cannot, in all honesty, continue
to list Warren Wheelers as a Mainstream club.
In addition to bringing up our dance level, we are adding several theme
dances. "Pie Night" in October turned up so many pies that there was almost one pie per person! Our Christmas Dance promises to be well attended
and in 1990, we plan a "Ring in the New Year" dance, a "T-shirt" dance in
April and a covered dish dinner - to close out the year. Join us

The "bread basket" was back again in November. It is a picnic basket
full of homemade breads and jellies, donated by Ester Wasser. It went
home with a visitor from Poconos Squares. Until next time-Happy Dancing!

We completed two successful theme raids. At Silver Stars, a champagne
toast was led by Reginald VanHoot & Maidservant Priscilla (the Rogers) joined by Count & Countess VonKolb, Marquis & Marchioness Van deKerner,
Baron & Baroness Bachmann, Archduke & Duchess VanKlotz and Lord & Lady
Sherlock. At Covered Bridges, Reginald was fortunate to have Marquis &
Marchioness de LaMarche, Il Duce & Duchess Musante, Herr & Frau Schlegel,
Khedive & Khedivess Kerner and all royal members of the House of Wheelers.
Many uncostumed Western Wheelers also supported these raids.
Halloween dance was fabulous; so many exciting costumes! Prizes (dinner for one) were awarded to Abe & Mrs. Lincoln (Occhipinti & Shierlitz),
Zza & the Judge (Nahass'), Count Dracula & Cat Lady (Klotz's) and Scarecrow & Farmer (Bachmann's). The Daigreponts and Barretts deserve highest
compliments on outstanding decorations. Those tombstones and "ghostly"
sounds sure set the mood for the "spooky" ucualun
Turkey Shoot...Leo Rogers won the first turkey with his first throw of
the dart. Bob Sly, Al McPherson & Henry Kolb also took home birds. The
worst dart thrower, Joe Salzman, was presented with a lovely duck!
This year, as our thankyou to United Methodist Church, we sponsored a
Barn Dance. Andy Woerner put together an evening of real fun, including a
great line dance and ending with a lively "Virginia Reel". Again, two
squares of Western Wheelers came to help! We salute you people who come
out for these special events and put so much conscientious effort into
making them really successful. What a group of GOOD SPORTS! What dedication!Come "enjoy" with us, you'll like us, the "FRIENDLY CLUB"'''''

SHRINK SAC
No, that doesn't mean a osychiatrist's bed. I just
didn't know what else to call this item.
I needed to make shrink sacs because I got lucky at a
flea market and bought rolls and rolls of fancy trim good to
use on square dance outfits. I went home with at least four
huge shopping bags stuffed full of lovely but "undetermined
fiber" trimmings. In order to test the suspicious ones, I
sewed a 45" length of each across (from selvage to selvage)
a piece of nylon netting-like fabric. You could use a 1 yd
width of regular nylon netting (which is sold 2 yds. wide).
Out of about 20 trims that I machine washed & dried, all but
one shrank. That meant I had to pre-shrink all these trims
before using them on non-shrinking fabric to avoid that
awful "puckering" after washing the finished garment.
Now we all know what hap -yens when we throw panty hose
in the washing machine. Knots! If you already have a wash
bag for panty hose, you could pre-shrink trim in that. If
you're like I was you just stood and unknotted your panty
hose and hung them to dry.
But the idea of unknotting yards and yards of 19 different trims set me in a panic. That when desperation
turns to creativity. J. made half a dozen bags because of
the volume of sewing I do, but if you're the average home
sewer one bag will be enough. I used 14" zippers and fabric
45" x 18", but you can make a smallFRoloishi er bag. I folded my fabric in half
Sa_06.E" ED6g'S
and used the selvage edges for sew' in in the zipper, centering it.
Then I "French Seamed" the 2 side
seams (to avoid fraying in my case,
or snagging in the case of stiff
nylon netting). To French :Seam

encasing the 1st seam in the 2nd.
I nut about 20 yds. of trim in each bag. In one bag
I had 20 yds. each of 3 different narrow trims. I was very
careful "not to knot" thr trim before putting into the bags
but I was still wondering what would happen after all that
tossing about in the washer & dryer. They not only did not
knot, they hardly changed position at all and were softer
too (use fabric softener). I rewound the trims

At the 13th Annual Convention, the ROUNDALAB membership recommended continuing the Round of the Quarter program, adopted in 1988, for another year. It
411c)
leY
was also recommended that for this coming year the
(:) Classic Committee work with CALLERLAB in selecting
the Phase II Round of the Quarter. Working in conjunction with Eddie's and Bobbie's Records, any phased round dance, whose
record is available in sufficient quanitites, will he considered. The
Rounds of the Quarter for the first quarter in 1990 are as follows:
Phase III - I'll Be The One - Fred/Gail Jabour (Mercury 888650 flip of
De Ja Vu). Phase TV - Venus - Rod/Susan Anderson (Eric 178; Collectables
1154; MCA D 2623). Phase V & VI - To Be Announced. Classic - Street
Fair - Paul/Laura Merola (Ranwood R-916). Cue sheets are available by
request from ROUNDALAB Office, 3 Churchill Rd, Cresskill, NJ 07626-1698.
The ROUNDALAB membership has established a "ROUNDALAB Golden Classic
List" of dances that have been on the List for 5 consecutive years. Once
a dance becomes a Golden Classic, it can no longer be considered for the
Current Classic List.

/:SQUARE DANCE ACTIVITY
Wisconsin in 1991, has been chosen,
THE FUTURE
"Square Dancing Rockets Into the Nineties."
Members will discuss their "mission," "blasting off" with new classes,
and many other phases of the activity. A main LEGACY goal since the inception of the organization in 1973 has been to preserve, protect and
perpetuate square dancing. Square dancing, to LEGACY trustees, is a
generic term which includes square, round, contra, folk, traditional and
clogging, all aspects of the activity. LEGACY committee members are working now on ways to accomplish this goal, revising the "Leadership Training
Manual" and encouraging areas to schedule Mini-Legacy meetings, taking a
survey of dancer numbers, reporting on the findings of the survey conducted in 1989, publishing a "Club Leadership Journal" to strengthen our clubs,
planning for Square Dance Month 1990. These are only a few of the present
committee projects now in progress.
Square dancing may see a surge in membership as the baby boomers mature
in the 90's and seek social activity to contrast with their high-tech job
responsibilities. LEGACY trustees will seek to prepare themselves and
all square dancers to meet this moment when it arrives and to welcome
these new dancers into the activity. LEGACY membership is open to square
dancers who have served 3 years as leaders. An associate membership is
available to individuals and associations who are interested in the goals
and wish to receive LEGACY publications. Inquire from Al/Vera Schreiner,

New dancers may not realize it, but the New Jersey Square
Dancers selected a state S/D costume a few years ago. NNJSDA
has a special chairman to help anyone select material, secure
patterns, etc, etc. Contact Rose Ericson (see page 2). New
York & Pennsylvania have recently selected state S/D outfits.
All member organizations of the SDCNJ sent representatives to
the Oct. Annual Meeting.
Although unable to attend, Steve/
Dorothy Musial, Gen. Ch. of the 26th NSDC, sent word that their
Exec. Bd. was donating $1000 to the SDCNJ to promote S/D education. Tex/Margaret Shipman, Gen. Ch. of the 3rd NJS&RDC turned
over surplus funds of more than $3000 to the Council. Through
discussion the delegates voted to:
1)continue funding a class newsletter program begun in the Bucks-Trenton
area by Joan Lechner and encourage other areas to follow suit if editors
could be found.
2) investigate and promote the Bucks-Trenton Dance Around and the NNJSDA
Freeloader Programs which encourage new grads to dance MS during the summer.
3)to help Penn-Jersey defray the cost of a Leadership Seminar, conducted
by Stan Burdick next May.
4) to share costs with the Del Val Federation for a S/D information phone
number that is currently in the Howntt's home #609-298-8828.
5)encourage delegates to submit other proposals indicating estimated
expenditures of other projects for the promotion of the overall S/D activity in their areas. All current projects will be reviewed annually.
New officers elected were Roy/Betsy Gotta, Ch.; Dave/Wendy Roberts, Vice
Ch.; Charlie/Kathy Porter, Treas.; Tex/Margaret Shipman, Secys. Ken/
Helena Robinson, Ch. of the 4th NJS&RDC, announced there would be some
programming changes for this coming year; a hall specially geared for
students will be renamed "Approaching Mainstream." Special flyers for
students will be distributed to all classes. The Holiday Inn in Princeton
has offered Convention attendees a special rate. For details in making
reservations, call Don/Stephens at 201-348-3433 or the Robinson at 201874-5830. The Mid-Year meeting of the Council will be held on Sat morning, Feb. 3, 1990 followed by a Convention meeting.

Besides dancing, workshops, fashion shows,
entertainment, shops the National S/D Convention
offers a tremendous Educational opportunity for
attendees. There are seminars, panels, clinics,
a bid session, Showcase of Ideas, publications
display, and an organizational round table.
Topics discussed in the various seminars and
panels cover a wide range and are staffed by knowledgeable dancers. Here
is an excellent opportunity to gather information to help your club
meet others with similar concerns and work on solutions. All are a part
of your admission fee to the NSDC. You can participate in one or as many
as you can schedule into your 24 hour day.
Plan now to attend the NSDC in Memphis. Need a registration form? Call
Call Doc/Peg Tirrell 201-568-5857. Some of the hotels are already filled;
they have a listing to share with interested dancers. See you there.

SQUARING UP IN HAWAII
About a year ago, the Nahass' made plans to re-visit Hawaii. They were
joined by the Puettemanns, the Wymans, the Flanderas, the Sherlocks, Phil
Hammer and his partner, Roz, the Coxes, and the Giegels. They went in
great style with special floral skirts, scarves and badges. They stayed
right on Waikiki Beach; climbed Diamond Head and, with music from a cassette player, squared up right there on top of the mountain! They visited the Hayseeds and the Pali Twirlers who both dance out-of-doors in the
warm evening air and were delighted to have 2 squares from the Mainland
visit. Many of the couples received their double Rover badges. The
group toured Pearl Harbor; went on a moonlight catamaran dinner cruise;
and visited the Uclynesian Cultural Center. A trip to the Big Island of
Hawaii found them squaring up in the Thurston Lava Tube and on the edge
of the Kileuea Volcano crater. The group went on to Maui where they
traveled to the Haleakala Volcano to see the sunrise. It was so cold
they forgot to dance! They even met some members of the Maui Mixers
SID Club who were doing a demo later that day. They were invited to
their club and had a great evening of dancing. All in all, they danced
7 times in 8 days. It was great! Aloha

ROUND DANCE HIGHLIGHTS - Gene/Jean Koenig.
NNJSDA/NNJRDLC Liaisons
It was an enthusiastic group of round dancers who enjoyed the nice blend
of dances programmed for the Council's November Fall Festival of Rounds.
Besides including all of the popular S/D & R/D ROM's, many other favorites
were danced. Would you believe there were 14 cuers, including guest cuer
Mary McGee - corresponding member of the Council, who was asked to fill in
for a missing Council member. The only disappointment was the fact that
Gene & Jean Koenig, the NNJSDA Liaisons to the R/D Council, were unable to
attend due to Gene's hospitalization.
Although Jeanne came & cued, we also missed Paul Brody. Our thoughts
and prayers are with you both.
Wonder how many there knew that this was neophyte Janet Summers' initial
cueing time with the Council. Not sure who was more nervous, she or her
husband Stuart. Our Council "old-timers" are always pleased to discover
that there are new couples interested in becoming R/D leaders and in fact,
the council has established a fund to help it's members attend RID school.
The Council is searching for a hall for it's planned April First Spring
Festival of Round Dances. We welcome all suggestions. Please tell your
R/D leader if you can help in solving this problem. Since the Council meets
about the same time this issue will come out, please contact your local
leader for the S/D ROM's. Next Council meeting will be the first Sunday
afternoon in March.

PRINCETON ROUNDS - Rumble - Hamilton, NJ - Tues.
201-657-0212
We're having a full floor of enthusiastic dancers every Tuesday evening!
Currently learning VENUS, a new rhumba. After a great party night in Oct.,
we took some time off while Ron & Ree & the boys went to Disney World. No
Mickey Mouse on the dance floor, however - just solid teaching and fun dancing. Drop by sometime and dance with us.

MASQUERADERS -- E. Windsor, NJ
(+)
Am. Czech. Farmers Club, Rt. 130 & Hankins Rd.
1, 3 & 5 Fridays
November began with a Morris/Bradt dance. Between tips, eleven squares
of dancers browsed and bought at our Clothing Shop 'n Swap. The mystery
raid/road rally led us to dinner in Old Bridge & to a fun evening with
the Richmond Dancers on Staten Island. The Turkey Shoot was won by one of
our new members and a real dart expert, Roseann Walls. Some of the proceeds of this dance with Sherman/Bradt and the Holiday were donated to the
Trenton Soup Kitchen. The Holiday Festival dance featuring Lehberger/
Bradt was held at the Maurice Hawk School, so we could have a larger floor
and enjoy a different setting. In early January, dancers are invited to
wear something white at our Snow Dance with Young/Bradt. The Masqueraders
wish all of you a Happy New Year with best of health.

Winter is upon us & the best way to beat the winter blues is to come &
dance with us. There are many fun-filled dances scheduled. Our fall season was very good. We gave 5 awards for Halloween costumes; thanks to all
who participated in our Salvation Army canned food donation Thanksgiving.
We send warm get-well wishes to Hattie De Leau RD #1, Box 118C, Pine Bush,
NY 12566. Hattie is recovering from a broken hip. Hattie & Lou are the
founders of Leisure Squares. Also to Mike Zagalia, Mae & Walter Drake &
Barb Muth we send warm get-well wishes. Five of our couples had the good _
fortune to vacation in Hawaii. By coincidence 4 of them met in different
places!!! Thanks to our publicity committee for an excellent promoting
job - we have 22 members in our class! They are progressing nicely under
instruction of Dalt Young & the watchful eyes of class coordinators Chuck
