Jim Furey
Can you believe it this year is more than half over already?
And the riding season is in full swing, hallelujah. It is also
July the month during which the nation celebrates it’s
independence from the tyranny imposed by the British. That
is celebrated on the 4th of July. This holiday is not about
fire works, or seeing great bands at the Fair St Louis. No
this is about peoples struggle to be free. I think our
forefathers might have been bikers, if they were around
today.
They had folks telling them how they should behave, who
they should pay taxes to and they rebelled against this
authority, I ask you is that a lot different than we are today?
But just as in those days of old, when many did not care
there were a select few who carried the fight these are the
people that are remembered today. Sheep are never
remembered. So it is still today, while many of us enjoy
the freedom of the road there is only a select few that care
enough to support the organizations that fight for our
freedom. I am talking about groups like F.O.R.R and
A.B.A.T.E. Then there is an even smaller group that truly
participates in these groups. A few that take the time to
send emails to their legislators or make the trips to their
respective state capitals to show the legislators how we truly
feel. This month I throw down the gauntlet and challenge
each of you to attend a meeting of one of these groups and
hear about the work they do for all of us.
Another busy month has gone by and I have been to cities
and towns throughout the area, meeting with riders from
all over and digging the heck out of it. I hope you have
seen your share of the open road to. Once again the event
calendar is pretty full and there are so many great events. I
hope that whichever you choose to attend you have a terrific
time.
In addition to going all over hell and high water in June,
Joy and I got hitched. I’m not sure she knew what she was
getting herself into but I appreciate her agreeing to go down
life’s path with me. I think we have a very good issue this
month. Once again we have several new advertisers and
we can’t thank them enough for showing faith in us. I know
from talking to many of you that you enjoy the magazine
and I am truly humbled by that. But it is only through the
support of our advertisers that we can continue to bring
this publication to you so please patronize them whenever
possible. Why not let a fellow rider benefit when you pay
your insurance premium or if you need to get your car
worked on? Just think about it who do you trust more
someone that rides on two wheels or four? As always thanks
for your support, and as Bill and Ted said ‘Be excellent to
each other and party on dudes (and dudettes).

Springfield Mile Thrills Again
by Al ‘Slow Talker’ Wilson
After several heats, the field was set for the main event, 25
laps of tire-to-tire racing. I have seen this event more times
than I would like to acknowledge, but always enjoy the
racing. This year’s race was better than any I can ever
remember, with many lead changes and the race undecided
until the final lap. The same great racers that run the flat
track for the mile take part in this event as well, so the
races are always spirited. Walking around in the crowd, I
saw a lot of familiar faces like Hoosier from the Motorheads.
I looked for Catfish but never caught up with him on
Saturday.
I’ve never been a big race fan. Sure I dug local stock car
racing as a kid. For a while I even kind of followed open
wheel racing, I would say back in its heyday, but here lately
nope. That is till I started following motorcycle flat track
racing; now I’m hooked. That said it was Memorial Day
Weekend so where else would a flat track fan be than at
Springfield, IL, to see the world’s fastest mile racing.
Arriving in Springfield on Saturday afternoon, we set up
shop in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel a very nice place and
reasonably priced too. There we hooked up with some
friends, Rod, Robin, Dick, Patty and Jim from Quincy.
Luckily Rod survived this Springfield Mile without any
unfortunate incidents with a port-a-potty. From the hotel,
it was off to the fairgounds and an evening of excitement
watching the TT’s. This is some great entertainment; the
TT is kind of a combination of motocross and flat track
racing, and always keeps one on the edge of their seat.
Sunday brought the best weather the mile has enjoyed in
quite some time. The last few years it seems like it has
rained and a couple of years ago the race was postponed
until Memorial Day. Not this year; the day was sunny and
the track was fast. Qualifying started shortly after noon
and did not let up until the field was filled. The qualifying
races were hotly contested, and the bikes seemed a little
more equal than in some years. The old favorites were there
and racing, like the Gun Slinger Jay Springsteen. Rich King
was in the field and of course number one plate holder,
Chris Carr, wouldn’t miss this event. Then there were other
strong riders like Show Time and the young lions like Kenny
Coolbeth. Doc’s Harley Davidson was well represented
by Terry Poovey who unfortunately was involved in a wreck
on the final lap and was in bad shape with 9 broken ribs
and many other serious injuries. I ask each of you to keep
him in your thoughts and prayers.
As the afternoon waned, it was time for the 25 lap final. If
you have never seen flat track racing you owe it to yourself
to go. These very talented riders are ripping down the
straight-aways right on each other at speeds of 140 MPH
and more. The drafting and the strategy involved make these
guys master tacticians. On this warm Sunday for most of
the race though, no one could match the tactics and the

machine of Kenny Coolbeth; he had 50 yards on the field
and no one was going to catch him. But then there was the
bad wreck that took out Terry and mangled some other bikes
pretty badly.
Well the restart worked out to the other riders’ advantages;
they were lined up right behind Kenny. In second was the
wily veteran Jay Springsteen and in third place when the
racing restarted was Chris Carr. The restart gave the two
crafty veterans new life and they made the most of it during
the final ten laps. In the end Chris Carr was the winner,
while the old Gun Slinger finished second and Kenny
finished third.
The racing was fantastic, the weather cooperated and
Springfield is a fun place to hang out. If you haven’t made
it your destination on a Memorial Day weekend you need
to see what real excitement is all about. But you know you
don’t have to wait until Memorial Day because the IMDA
will stage the same great racing, on Labor Day weekend!
You race fans may want to support the shops and dealers
like Doc’s Harley Davidson that support the IMDA.

Memorial Weekend ’06 - Mid-America Freedom Rally
- Once again, the Buckhorn F.O.R.R. Freedom Rally was
a great weather weekend and a well attended success.
With campers, vendors, music, food and events, the
riders who attended seemed to have a good time relaxin’
in the sun, shade and watching the events unfold to a
cold brew. This annual event draws riders from around
the Ozarks and beyond. Good riding around the area
provided those that wanted to get away for a little while
good scenery and good stops along the way. This is a
good Memorial Day weekend event it is just off I-44, try
it next year.
Lake of the Ozarks H-D bike nite - On Saturday May 27,
LOH-D had a bike nite for locals and lake visitors at the
dealership on Hwy 54 in Osage Beach. Music, food and a
lot of bikes provided the entertainment.
The Fish Tank Bike Nite - May 31st - The Fish Tank Bar
and Grill had their 2nd bike nite on a Wednesday
evening. Held the last Wednesday of the month at the bar
on Hwy W in Lake Ozark. Christian Myers has a nice set
up with parking out back for the bikes and live music to
entertain. Although the weather kept a number of riders
away, the next 4 should be well attended. Trophies are
given away for the bike competition provided by the
Seebolds, one of the sponsors, and Custom Motorcycle
Creations is the other sponsor. See you there, last
Wednesday of the month around 5:00.
Testicle Festival - Olean, MO - What can you say? A
festival in downtown Olean, with 400 plus bikes and
plenty of tasty testicles. This is a good time. Vendors,
carnival, beer wagon, food, people, more testicles. An
annual event, just north of Eldon, MO, this is one great
little event which really draws the bikes. Keep your eye
out for the date next year, early June Saturday.
Another Stop Along the Way - Elbow Inn, Devils
Elbow, MO - You may have been there, maybe not. The
Elbow Inn has new owners. Terry and Susie along with
manager Mark have it cookin again. We rolled in on a
Saturday afternoon and the bikes were lined up and the
slab ribs were getting devoured. Me and Big Ed scarfed
up a whole slab out back on the deck overlooking a
launch area on the Big Piney River. Good service, cold
beer and a great stop along your way. Just off I-44,
Dixon exit, go back east on the south outer road to Old
Rt. 66, about a mile or so. If you haven’t been there, get
there. Get the slab ribs, you can’t go wrong. Tell ‘em you
read about it in The Biking Life. Closed Sundays.
Full Circle Motorcycle Association - Sedalia, MO Formed in 2004, the FCMA has grown since their first
meeting on February 16, 2004. They have several
fundraisers each year, poker runs, rides, bike shows,
auctions and generally have a good time. Meetings are
held once a month at 7:00 p.m., the first Sunday of the
month. By invite only, if you are interested contact 660221-4377 or 660-827-6218. Event info can be found at
local bike shops in the area. We will get event info here if
we get it in time. Check our event calendar.

News and Notes - Congratulations to J.D. Kudart of
Custom Motorcycle Creations in Lake Ozark on
winning the Biker Build Off at the Neosho, MO show
this spring.
J.D. Long is the new owner of the Rail Sports Bar next to
the L.O. Harley shop on Hwy 54. Now called The Rail 2,
still good food, ice cold brew, and plenty of TV’s. J.D. is
a biker, so it is still very biker friendly. Get there when
you are looking for a good stop and fuel for the body.
Another good stop along the way is Creekside Café in
Macks Creek, MO on Hwy 54, 12 miles west of
Camdenton. Open for breakfast, open all day and easy to
find. Jack Daniels, mayor of Macks Creek and member
of the Full Circle Motorcycle Club highly recommends it
and so do I.
Bike Nite Thursdays at the Elbow Inn, Devils Elbow,
MO
Don’t forget Yeager’s Harley-Davidson Birthday Bash on
July 8. It is easy to find on Hwy 65 in Sedalia, just south
of the state fairgrounds. Larry does it right when he has
an event. A good ride from anywhere, it is about 65-70
miles from the Lake area. Hope to see you there on
Saturday, July 8.
The publisher apologizes for the lack of Lake

A Harley Love Story
By Ann Antal
I have been riding a pearl white 2001 883 Harley-Davidson
Sportster since April 2002. I had been riding as a passenger
for several years before I was divorced in 2000. When the
motorcycle riders’ course was offered in this area, I decided
it was time to learn to ride and purchase my own. I spent
the first summer riding a 360 Honda that I bought for $300,
and shortly thereafter decided I had to have a Harley. In
April 2002, my significant other at the time (now my
husband) received a phone call from biker friends in South
Carolina. A guy there had won a motorcycle in a raffle and
was selling this brand-new bike for a very reasonable price.
We drove to South Carolina the next weekend to pick it up.
After arriving back in Decatur, we immediately stopped at
Barry’s American Cycles to order shorter shocks and a
lowering kit. Even with my riding boots with two-inch
heels, I could barely reach the ground. A week later, I was
on the bike riding, and since then my love for riding has
only become GREATER.
The following winter, I decided to add to the look of the
bike by taking the fenders and tank to a local artist for some
airbrush work. Lucy Brownlow of Lucy’s Airbrush here in
Decatur did a wonderful job applying abalone ghost flames
outlined in silver on all three parts and airbrushing the panda
bear on the top of the tank. I am a fanatic panda bear
collector; my bike’s license plate even says “PANDA.”
From then on, I had bike show fever. I started purchasing
small chrome pieces on E-Bay to fit my bike, with a Harley
Davidson and Cheney J & P Cycle catalog by my side to
make sure I wasn’t paying too much. Each year, I added
something small, something new to the theme. H & H
Upholstery did a wonderful job putting the pearl white
flames in the seat and handgrips.
Watch out Sportster class! I have a room displaying firstplace trophies (and a couple of seconds), including ones
from Illinois State A.B.A.T.E. party (past three years-1st
place), Prairieland’s Rally in the Valley (past three years1st place; last year, Best of Show), A.B.A.T.E. East Central
Region’s party – Chiggerfest (past three years-1st place; past
two years, Best of Show; last year, Best Paint) and several
other local and out-of-town first-place awards.
I have been a member of the Prairieland Chapter of
A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois since 1995 and have met many
wonderful people. I have actively been involved, holding
positions such as newsletter, photographer, secretary,
membership coordinator (past three years) and was just
recently elected 2006 president of the chapter, the first
woman president of this chapter. I appreciate the
membership recognizing the dedication I have for the
chapter and the importance I feel in being a member of
A.B.A.T.E. I also belong to A.B.A.T.E. of South Carolina,
in support of our many friends there! I met Steve, my
husband of two years in May, through A.B.A.T.E. In 2004,
we were married at Rally in the Valley which is an event
by the Prairieland Chapter; the proceeds go to support
motorcycle rights organizations. In addition to numerous
runs throughout the summer, we have our annual Christmas
for Kids in September. This big fund raiser, with our local
Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, allows us to shop for
gifts for the children in our area.
As you can tell, motorcycling and A.B.A.T. E. have become
a very large part of my life. My daughter Amber will be
turning sixteen in June and is already expressing the same
interest I have in motorcycling. I hope her future is as
enjoyable as mine has been in the past with the special
friendships and times and I’ve found in motorcycling. I
look forward to sharing these special times in the future
with her. She has grown up knowing the importance of
safety in motorcycling and of protecting our freedoms.

Show Your Stuff Rocks Jack’s Iron Horse
by Jim Furey
Jack’s Iron Horse Bar and Grill on St Charles Rock Road
is always looking for new ways to entertain us. This tradition
continued on May 21st, when they staged the first ever Bike
Builder Show Your Stuff Expo. This was an entirely
different concept and was well received by the hundreds in
attendance that day. It was hard to get an exact count
because, by its nature, this was certainly a rolling crowd
with people coming and going all day.
Several of the area’s best bike builders were there to display
their rolling masterpieces; among them were DJ Weil and
the crew from Big Boyz Custom Cycles in Fenton,, MO.
DJ had on display his Fugginignerent bike as well as several
others that had some pretty amazing sale prices on them. It
might be well worth a trip to his shop on Gravois in Olde
Towne Fenton to see what kind of a deal he can work up
for you. Another of the master builders who had their wares
on display was Cutting Edge Cycles from St. Charles.
Mark fresh off his Best of Show award at the Wide Open
Kansas City show, had the “Blue One’ on display and some
other bikes showcasing his talents. Heathen Motorcycles
also had some of their cool choppers at the expo. The final
builder there this time was Glen LaRue of LaRue Customs
in House Springs. Glen had on display the bike we have all
seen on the Budweiser posters all over town.
The cool thing about this was that all these craftsmen were
willing to take the time to share ideas and a beverage with
the area’s riding public. In addition to being good at what
they do, all the builders that were there do business the
right way and treat their clients well. I believe several other
builders were invited and I can’t figure out why they
wouldn’t want to have been a part of this very successful
event.
The bike builders were informative and entertaining, but
Jack’s also had a band playing out on the patio. That band
was Hush; this impressive classic rock band is a staple at
Jack’s and can also be seen at various other places around
town. Check them out; I think you’ll be digging on them
to.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day, and as is so often the case, I
learned a little more about bikes from talking to the builders.
I believe Jack’s Iron Horse Bar and Grill has another of
these planned for a little later on in the year. Watch for it in
their ad so you don’t miss it. If you are a builder, call the
bar and see how you can be involved in the next one.
Jack’s is a fun place to go and is constantly working on
delivering you a great time in a biker atmosphere. It is no
wonder it is the Mid-West’s oldest biker bar. Till next time.

Friday’s on Wednesday
by Jim Furey
You ever sit around on a Wednesday night wondering what
to do? You know when that mid-week blah thing kind of
gets you. I have a great suggestion—Friday’s South on
South Illinois St. in Belleville, IL is hosting a bike night
every Wednesday night so ride on over. Rob and his partners
in this establishment have gone out of their way to make
this a fun event.
I was approached by Tony, owner of American
Performance Motorcycle Co., with the idea of having a
bike night somewhere. Last year Tony and I tried to do this
with two other establishments that weren’t willing to make
the commitment that Rob has. Tony supports this bike night
by being one of the hosts. This kind of commitment and
support is why the very first night we had more than 70
bikes show up and some very cool classic whips as well.
There were all kinds of bikes here including some customs
that just rocked. Joe’s bike that Billy Lane fabricated, yes
and welded the sissy bar for, was there. Dan Carroll from
Chaos Customs was also there and I’m sure we’ll see some
of his metal work in the future there too. That’s right, not
only are bikes welcome, but hot rods are invited too.
Friday’s is an awesome place for something like this and
since it’s located right on Illinois St., you can watch traffic
pass by as you enjoy some of the fine food Friday’s is known
for. The whole parking lot is bike and hot rod parking only
on bike night and we are filling it up. It only makes sense
that this event is successful though, because the owners
are riders too, so they know how they like to be treated.
And as long as you are at Friday’s, why not walk down to
Tony’s shop and check out the ever changing parts, clothing
and bikes that are available? I have said it before and I’ll
say it again nobody prices Harleys better than American
Performance Motorcycles.
The Biking Life is also a host for this bike night so I invite
you to come out sample some tasty tidbits. Friday’s South
will give you either 5 tacos for $4 or an order of wings for
$4. You can wash that down with a bucket of 5 domestic
beers for only $8. This is a great place to hang with friends
and meet some new ones. Plus it gives us a place to get
over those mid-week blahs!

Susie, like any tomboy started her passion for
riding at the age of 12. She rode her beloved
dirt bike until her knees drug the ground.
Before she knew it, fears had passed, but she
never forgot the feeling of freedom and the wind
in her face. But like most hard working, single
moms, life’s priorities change. That little on her
dirt bike terrorizing the open fields and back
roads became a distant memory. However that
all changed when, at the age of 40, Susie
purchased her 2002 883 Sportster. She
reclaimed that memory and once again had the
wind in her face, enjoying the freedom of the
road. It didn’t take long before Susie felt the
need for speed. She wanted to personalize her
ride from the ground up, literally! With the
artistic talents of he life long friend Starvin’
Marvin Cox and Mike Case and Ida Rios of
Case’s Custom Cycles. Susies stock Sportster
took on a new life of its own. Cox’s beautiful
one-of-a-kind paint job and Case’s Custom

produced a show stopping 1200cc beauty that
gives a whole new meaning to “eye protection”

Letter to the Editor – Rebuttal
Mr. Henley,
I’m writing in regards to your editorial printed this past
March in this publication.
I am sorry that someone you know was involved in a
shooting. It is a tragic event that affects many lives. But
wishing another human dead is extreme. And shouting
‘good,’ when someone has lost his life, is beyond extreme.
I didn’t know either of the men you spoke of, but we should
all realize they both have families whose lives are forever
changed. But as you say, enough of that crap.
My reason for writing is to respond your comments
regarding a tragedy, which befell Lincoln County Missouri,
on October 23, 2005 at 23:30. I have firsthand knowledge
of how the events of that night unfolded. You see, one of
the young men your nephew shot, in the back of the head,
was my oldest son. He was only 22 years with his whole
life ahead of him, suddenly taken away.
As to the information you printed, I think you were poorly
informed. To start with, there was no chase. The entire
distance from where Deputy Forler was sitting to where
they stopped was less than 7 tenths of a mile. State highway
47 is a narrow two lane road with no shoulders and nowhere
to safely pull over. Deputy Forler was parked in the entrance
to a private subdivision. My son drove by. I don’t know if
he was speeding or not, but Deputy Forler couldn’t have
easily told either because he didn’t have a radar gun in his
cruiser. According to the four surviving witnesses, my son
pulled into the next subdivision, and then the first available
driveway. He even pulled up to the garage door, so the
officer would have room to pull in behind him, off of the
street. Hardly an attempt to evade. I don’t know about the
lights being turned off other than to say my son had the
auto lights set so when the engine was off, the lights turned
off. Yes, his truck had tinted windows, which are not illegal.
What if this had been the person who lives in that house or
if they had been in a van, would Forler still have fired his
weapon? Why was there only three seconds from the time
the siren stopped until he shot? Not time to make a good
assessment of the situation, I would think. The truck might
have rolled backwards on the nearly level driveway. It has
a manual transmission. The truck engine was off, so he
didn’t try to back into anything or anyone. I was at the
reenactment conducted by the FBI and MSHP. They
concluded the truck rolled eighteen feet in about eight
seconds. Hardly a fast backward motion, which should have
left ample time for fit 26 year-old to move if he felt
threatened. The witnesses say Deputy Forler was standing
in the V of the door, not between the vehicles. Even if you
don’t choose to believe the people that were there, the crime
scene photos clearly show the shell casings were near the
driver’s side door of the cruiser. I also got to see the damage
to the cruiser that day, and it is minor. The MSHP’s report
also states the damage is consistent with a slow-speed
impact.
In your third paragraph, you chose to attack the victims
and their parents. To my knowledge there is no documented
history of any of the six occupants in the truck trying to
elude the police. My son was driving a 4-wheel-drive truck,
and across the street from where stopped was an open field,
so if he had wanted to he probably could have gotten away.
The other young man Deputy Forler murdered had only
met my son 45 minutes prior to his demise. But that is the
way my son was, a friend to everyone. Then you say there
minor girls in the truck. All occupants of the truck were
18-23 years of age. The youngest was celebrating her 18th
birthday that unforgettable night. I didn’t know all the
people in my son’s truck that night, but the ones I do know
were fine young citizens all with jobs or in high school. I
can only speak for myself, as a parent, but my wife and I
have always taught all three of our sons to respect the law.
If you’re being stopped by the police and there is no
shoulder you proceed to the next available road, for your
safety as well as the officers. You see Mr. Henley; we have
had and still have officers in our family. None of whom, in
their combined service of nearly 100 years, has ever shot
anyone, especially in the back of the head.
You are correct about one thing however, lives are screwed
up by bad decisions made that night. Poor, deadly decisions
made by your nephew!
My son was a much loved, respected, kind, and generous
young man. He deserved more than he got that night too.
Thanks to Jim Furey for allowing me to present some of
the facts in this nightmare that has consumed our lives.
Respectfully,
Brent Teasley
I thank Mr Teasley for taking the time to write. This piece like
the piece written by Mr Henley are opinion no doubt based in
fact, as they were relayed to them. I had no idea of how strongly
opinions are divided on this issue. I don’t know what happened
on that night, having heard both sides of the story, it is hard to
tell. I know that many families have been touched by this tragedy.
However now that both sides have been aired this will be the
last anyone will read of this and in the future we will stick to our
primary purpose writing about motorcycles.
Jim Furey Publisher
ARE YOU PREPARED?
CMA had a chapter ride on June 10th and it
was planned as our first overnight of the season.
We met at a QT at 10:00am and headed for
Hannibal, MO by way of the Illinois side of the
Mississippi River. That Saturday the temperature
was in the 70s and it was a beautiful day. The
weatherman said there was a 50% chance of rain
for late-afternoon.
We took our time riding the River Road. It
was a great ride and we got up to Hannibal about
3:00pm. The weather started changing and by 5
o’clock there were severe weather warnings out.
Several of us had planned to ride back to St. Louis
that evening. We had our rain gear and we needed
it! The rest of the group spent the night in Hannibal
and were not prepared for bad weather. They woke
up on Sunday morning to rain and cold
temperatures; most of the riders didn’t even bring a
jacket. Many of them went to Wal-Mart to get
jackets and gloves for the ride home. As we’ve all
learned, riding when you are cold and wet is not
fun!!
We have to be prepared for unexpected
changes in life — there are some things in life we
can be prepared for like a jacket and rain gear. But
how prepared are we for the things in life totally out
of our control, like sickness or the loss of a loved
one? These are the things we all must face at one
time or another. We must realize that ME having
control is not the answer.
God is creator of our world and universe,
has all power and knows what we need and when
we need it. We must develop a relationship with
Christ and depend on Him. He doesn’t make us
immune to these situations, but helps us get
through them. David wrote this in Psalm 34. In 22
short verses, he explains his dependence on God
and his assurance God takes care of him. In verse
4 he states, “I sought the Lord, and he answered
me; he delivers me from all my fears.” We also can
have this assurance!
God’s love and knowledge are so great He
knows what’s happening to us — we just have to
ask for His help. Part of us being prepared is
knowing God before we have an emergency in our
life. Do you know how to do this? What is your
relationship with God right now or do you even have
a relationship with Him? Do you need help to talk to
Him? If so, ask any Christian biker at your next
event, contact one of the following people, or call
me. The CMA Missouri State Coordinator is Clark

New and Notes from the Hardriders
Jim Alred- 2 broken legs/ankles. He was injured
in mid-May while riding his Harley on
northbound I-55 in the construction area. A
truck pulling a trailer suddenly stopped in front
of him causing him to collide with the trailer.
Mike Hardin was injured Thurs, June 11th on
south bound I-55 at the exit to I- 270. This area
has the uneven pavement due to lane paving
work. ironically the accident happened just
before a highway marque sign which reads:
“motorcycles use caution”. Mike sustained
some severe “road rash”.
Both motorcycles are said to be totaled. Both
riders are recuperating nicely. Monica Tranchilla
is also mending from torn rotator cuff surgery
which was performed on June 14th. All of the
Hardriders wish a speedy recovery to all.
by Mike Gates
The Hardriders are a fun group of riders that
meet every Thursday Night for an evening of
riding and good times. They meet at a different
establishment every week and then proceed to
another stop from there. We welcome there
contribution to this months issue and look
forward to more from them in the future. I also
pass along my wishes for a speedy recovery to
there downed riders. I am sure you noted that
the two motorcycle accidents occurred in
construction zones. These are particularly
dangerous areas for bikes cause we only have
two wheels and the uneven pavement can
wreak havoc with our rides handling. Please be
extra vigilant when traversing these spots. If
you would like to ride with the Hardriders call
their hotline (314) 340 - 2000 to find the
starting spot.

Decatur Rallies for ABATE
Another month, another trip we make to be sure you hear
about as many of the events that go on in the bi-state region
as possible. The weekend of June 2nd & 3rd found me in
Decatur, IL, once again. This time I was hanging with my
new friends from the Prairieland ABATE Chapter at their
7th Annual Rally in the Valley, also known as ‘The Party
with a Purpose.’
For those of you unfamiliar with Decatur, it is situated along
the banks of the Sangamon River which was dammed to
form Decatur Lake, a truly magnificent recreational
waterway. I often remember swimming in the lake in my
teenage years when I lived in Decatur; there really wasn’t
a much better way to cool off on a warm summer day, unless
we could talk Susie into going swimming with us but that
is another story for another day. Anyway Ann Antal the
Prairieland Chapter President invited me to come and take
part in their event. As always, I was more than happy to
support a motorcycle event especially one with a purpose.
The event was held right on the shores of the river in a
terrific setting. Gates opened on Friday afternoon and a
stream of bikers converged on the site which offered free
camping with the price of admission. Friday night the
partiers enjoyed the sounds of C-4 whose big sound is as
explosive as their name. Saturday brought some awesome
weather which aided the Vice-President’s Poker Run in
being one of the most successful ever. The riders that took
part on this run through Central Illinois were treated to
several different stops and all seemed to enjoy themselves.
Those that stayed at the campground were entertained by
Fast Eddie’s DJ Service.
The folks from the poker run got back just in time for the
bike show. Once again I was one of three judges; it is so
often really difficult to pick winners for several reasons.
One is that there are just a lot of excellent bikes, and you
also know that all owners feel deep in their heart that their
bike is a winner or they wouldn’t bother to show it at all. I
commend all who take the time to customize and clean their
bikes to show them off for the rest of us. Without you souls,
there couldn’t be bike shows so you are all winners just for
entering.
After the judging was completed, it was time to sit and
relax. That was easy to do with pretty much anything you
liked in the way of food and beverages available, not to
mention that great pavilion to keep a bit of the sun off you
as well. There were several clubs represented at the event;
we saw some of our friends from the United Riders, the
DC Eagles, the Black Pistons and the Outlaws. I enjoyed
the opportunity to visit with all these groups, and it was
very cool to see that the guidelines of the event were
followed and no attitudes were on display. That is the way
things need to be in order for everyone to be able to enjoy
the freedom of the road.
After eating and drinking pretty much my fill, the evening
was filled with some badass tunes from the Groove Daddies.
Bikes continued showing up throughout the evening with
some nice customs showing up right around dusk. It was
interesting to see the builders all getting their heads together
and questioning each other about how they did this or that
to achieve the unique look they were going for. As it got
dark, a bonfire was lit and this became a popular spot to
hang out, though lord knows it had been plenty warm that
day. We said goodbye to our friends from Decatur, but are
already anxiously awaiting our next opportunity to go there
and see some familiar faces. As always, watch our events
calendar—challenge your boundaries and go to an event
like this, you will not be disappointed.

Joke of The Month
Manners;
During class, a teacher trying to teach good manners asks the students, one by one;
“Michael, if you were on a date, having dinner with a nice young lady, how would you tell
her that you have to go to the rest room,” she asked.
“Just a minute, I have to go pee”, he said.
The teacher replied, “That would be rude and impolite. What about you John, how would
you say it?”
“I am sorry, but i really need to go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”
The teacher responded, “That’s better, but it’s still not very mannerly to say the word
‘bathroom’ at the table.”
“And you Peter, are you able to show us your good manners?”
I would say; “Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have to shake hands with a
very dear friend of mine, whom I hope you’ll get to meet after dinner.”
The teacher fainted.

SEMO RUN WHAT YA BRUNG FIELD EVENTS
25TH ANNIVERSARY
BY: Kim Kirgan
Well my friends, it is hard to believe that it has been
25 years since my first SEMO. This year’s events have
proven to be better than ever. If you did not make this
year to see the new location, I am sorry to say that
you missed a really good party, all of us here at THE
BIKING LIFE have been putting the word out about
the new spot and once again we must say, if you could
not make this years SEMO you must make next years.
The field events, sponsored by TJ’S BAR AND GRILL
proved entertaining as always, Terry from TJ’S with
the help of Squatty and Eddie put on one hell of a
show with the slow drags, tire drags, bite the weenie,
tug of war, and regular drags. It always amazed me
how people can do that on dirt, talk about control.
And a special thank you to the girl from the crowd
who volunteered to be trophy girl, you did a fantastic
job. The winners seemed to really be impressed at
how you handled their trophies!
Several bikes entered the chopper contest, and may
I say there where some really nice bikes, I would not
have wanted to judge it, they are all winners, But a
bike owned by Chris Black snagged the trophy. Nice
job Chris! And as always Saturday night SINGER
STEVE AND THE NIGHT OWLS rocked the place with
their balls to the wall rock and roll. The wet t-shirt
contests where as entertaining as always, good job
to all girls that entered, and congratulations to the
winners.
Speaking of Saturday night, have you ever had a Deja
vous? Well for the inquiring minds that want to know,
YES it rained!!
I have come to the comical realization that it has
become tradition. What would SEMO be without rain?
At least Mother Nature waited till late Saturday night
to unleash her fury. Everyone was able to get in a
perfect Saturday afternoon full of sunshine. There
was also a raffle sponsored by SQUATTYS SPEED
SHOP for a Jesse James Chopper Bicycle all the
proceeds went to Dana Haverstick, she is a young
girl battling leukemia. Keep an ear open for more
benefits to help defray rising medical costs. After
talking to some of her family members, this is her
second round with this illness, it went in remission
and she got married and had a baby girl named
Destiny. Keep them in your prayers this is a family
that needs it. And last but surely not least a big kudos
for the Lesterville Fire and Rescue for all their hard
work, they are truly the heroes for the work they do.
This is a really nice location, the ride down there is
awesome through the Arcadia Valley, with the scenic
views it can’t be beat. And once you arrive you have
food venders, a beer vender and all the fun you can
handle for a weekend. So what do ya say? You gotta
go, no more excuses!

Motorheads Kenny Hoffman Run
by Jumbo
The big day was finally here, the wedding day you ask?
No, it was June 4th and that could mean only one thing,
time for the Annual Kenny Hoffman Memorial Poker Run
put on by the Illinois Motorheads MC. I know I go to a lot
of Motorheads events and I’ll tell you why—because they
are big fun and this one was no different.
The sign up was at Phyl’s Chet and Rose’s in Marine, IL;
this is the home bar for the Motorheads since they were
born in Marine. This year’s run was the biggest ever with
more than 550 bikes signed up. No matter where we went,
it was hard not to know that the Motorheads event had been
there. I was hammering down Hwy 4 and all kinds of bikes
were heading the other way. I knew from the numbers, I
would soon be turning around and heading the other way.
We got to Phyl’s saw a bunch of friends, signed up and
then started hammering back down the road to Lebanon,
IL, and the first stop, Brewers. This is a nice little tavern
right on Main Street in Lebanon, a historic town. Who did
I see as I was walking into the bar? None other than Pat
Bush, the owner of Doc’s Harley Davidson. It was cool
to see her on a ride, not that there is anything unusual about
that. Patty is one of the few owners you regularly see on a
bike.
for rides in the Illinois area. Probably because the owners,
Bill and Debbie, are riders themselves and know how to
accommodate runs. Bill is also a recently patched
Motorhead, and we congratulate him publicly for that. Well,
it was a poker run, so we drew our cards and I’m not sure
how it is possible, but after only two stops, I could tell
these hands sucked majorly.
After a couple of cold ones, it was back into the Illinois
countryside and a trip to Jim and Cindy’s in Marissa, IL.
This was the second time I have been on a run that stopped
here, and the friendly staff seems to go out of there way to
ensure everyone has a good time. The next stop was at
Skooters in Mascoutah, IL. This is a great place to join
friends to either plan a ride or to talk about the ride you’ve

Grat River ABATE/Kelly’s Poker Run
by Jim Furey
Lighthouse. You can’t miss it because of the big
lighthouse there.
I’ve said it before—there are just so many fun
events and benefits in the region, you have to make
choices even though you’d like to go to them all. I
had made some of these choices in the past and
missed the Kelly’s Great River ABATE Chapter
Poker Run. Yeah, I had gotten there for the post
party before, but I hadn’t made the run. Changed
that this year though and I am glad I did!
We arrived in Quincy kind of late Friday and headed
for our favorite dining place in the area, Kelly’s.
They truly have great food and atmosphere, and a
visit here is worth the ride anytime. After filling our
bellies, it was off to find our accommodations;
unfortunately, no condos by the river for us this trip.
You know the old saying fool me once, shame on
you… Saturday dawned a little on the ugly side, but
it didn’t dampen the spirit of the bikers in Quincy. I
have recently come to the conclusion that there are
riders, people who like to ride if the temps are above
72 and below 90 and there is no chance of any kind
of big wind or precip. Then there are bikers who
enjoy the ride anytime. Quincy has more than its
share of the latter.
I truly enjoy trips to Quincy and seeing the friendly
folks from that area; this one was no exception. We
rode up on the evening of May 19th hammering hard
up US 61. It ain’t an interstate but if you want to
make time, it is the way to go though if you have the
time, Highway 79 is a much more scenic ride. It
takes you past some fine places to stop like the Fat
Texan BBQ in Winfield and the Steamboat Lounge
in Clarksville, or even cross the bridge at Louisiana
and check out a very nice biker friendly place the
This ride has gotten so large in recent years that they
have split it off into two routes. Joy and I decided to
take the southern route, and we had a great time.
Both routes start at
Kelly’s and from there our route took us to the
Flying Inn not far from Quincy. From there, we took
off on some nice roads that led us to Barry and a
place called the Brick Lantern. This place was very
nice and the staff was very friendly. After a beverage
or two, it was off to Pittsfield and a cool place called
the Brickyard. The skies were looking ugly, so we
didn’t stay long and headed for the Lighthouse Inn
on the shores of the Mississippi where we grabbed a
quick bite to eat. The owners Pat and Steve have a
great place with a huge patio and would be a great
place to include as a stopping point on any rides one
takes up that way.
Oops, while eating, I noticed I had a call from the
owner of the Steamboat Lounge, where I was
supposed to have been earlier. I enlisted some
support from the local CMA Chapter to ride with me
here to pose for a photo, and I thank them
immensely for their help, though I can’t name them
because I’m not sure where that piece of paper is.
The next stop was supposed to be the Longbranch
Saloon in New Canton but our detour and chowing
down on some great pizza at the Steamboat Lounge
insured we weren’t going to make it there in time, so
we headed straight for South Side Boat Club in
Quincy. There the party lasted well into the night
and everyone had a great time. It was also there that
we saw our old friend Panama performing his ink
artistry for all those who wanted to get a new tat.
Once again another awesome trip to Quincy and,
though we didn’t see them this trip, I give a shout
out to our friends in the Midwest Percenters and
thank them for inviting us to the birthday party
earlier this year.

2006 Racing Season Takes Off with a Bang
by Killer Miller
Spring seems to signal racers across the Midwest to hook
up and haul race equipment to and from the tracks to test
their mettle against other riders. As it has for years, the
Miller family once again responded to those signals. Armed
with a 2005 CRF250R Honda sponsored by Set Up Boots,
The Biking Life magazine, and Twin City Honda Suzuki,
we started the AMA District 18 season at Action MX/TT in
Richwoods, Missouri, on the weekend of March 25 and
26.
Even though it sounds like we’re bragging, Kevin “Hot
Rod” Miller (the real racer of the family) started the season
off in grand style by taking a win on both Saturday and
Sunday in the 250 cc “B” class and a third and a second in
four-stroke “lite” (250 cc) behind the Suzuki piloted by
Norm Widman of Widman Racing. Norm is another thirdgeneration rider who came out with both barrels ablaze this
season. Not only did he win the 250 cc four-stroke, he also
took two wins in the 250 cc “C” class and two wins in the
Dirt Track Tire class at the opening weekend at Richwoods.
Other riders having great days were Brett Boyd (who won
a couple of classes on his Suzuki 450, including Expert)
and Brett Haltmayer (who took the Vintage class win). Gary
Jones won the Over 40 (50?) class, but the first hard luck
award of the year went to Gary Jones, Jr., who took a hard
fall off track on Saturday and another hard fall entering the
first turn on Sunday in the 250 cc “C” class. Jones broke
both arms in the Sunday fall, which will sideline him for a
while.
From Richwoods, the season then moved to BET Raceway
Park (between Millstadt and Belleville, Illinois). This
second race of the season had a good turnout despite the
fact that Steve Nace was promoting a regional series at PIR
in Paducah, Kentucky. The first BET race of the season
was sponsored by Donelson Cycle—they have been helping
out riders and racers in this area for more than 40 years and
are always a benefit to the biking society. Once again, all
the top guns showed up. The Krasten family was there,
sporting two new rides: a 70s single Honda and a CRF450.
As always, it was good to see Josh and Barb and to once
again see Goodwin Racing represented. The field for the
Vintage race was filled with interesting equipment,
including an old Kawasaki and a Maico as well as the usual
Hondas and Yamahas. Dirt Track Tire class was a full one,
as was the 250 cc “C” class. Unfortunately, this wasn’t
going to be Norm’s night in that class—his bike loaded up
and he couldn’t make the start, letting Kapler win on a
Yamaha 250. Widman did, however, came back to win the
four-stroke “lite.” Brett Boyd took the 450 cc class, the
younger Krasten took the Dirt Track Tire class over Norm,
and our buddy Josh got beat on the last lap to take fourth
in the class. In addition, our man Kevin took the win wire
to wire in the 250 cc “B” class. The second hard luck award
of the season goes to Brett Haltmayer. He led the entire
Vintage class race to the last turn, when the old BET track
just up and bit him, throwing him and his 500 cc Yamaha
hard to the ground and giving the win to the rider on the
Kawasaki 350 and second place to the Maico.
A brief review of the points for the first half of the season
finds Brett Boyd leading the Expert class and the 450 cc
four-stroke; Brett Haltmayer leading Vintage; Norm
Widman leading Dirt Track Tire, 250 cc four-stoke (Kevin
Miller is second), and 250 cc “C” class; Gary Jones leading
Over 40; and Kevin Miller leading 250 cc “B” class. I know
there are a lot of racers I didn’t mention, so for a complete
list of the points go to BETDIRT.com, click on the AMA
Dist. 18 link, and then go to TT points to get caught up.

Bogart’s Bike Show 2006
by Al ‘Slow Talker’ Wilson
May 6, 2006 was the date for the fourth annual motorcycle
show and swap meet which was held at Bogart’s Banquet
Center in Jacksonville, IL. This annual event is growing
by leaps and bounds every year and with good reason; the
organizer is constantly looking for ways to update and
improve the bike show. This year’s event was sponsored
by Rockhard Customs, builders of some of the sharpest
bikes not seen on TV, and Xtreme Machine, whose custom
wheels are known for their excellence in quality and design.
The show is open to Harley Davidsons and all American
V-Twins, and there was also a special class for foreign bikes.
This event was a great opportunity to go to Jacksonville to
see our friends from Rockhard Customs, and also to see
the people that we have met from Xtreme Machine.
The gates opened at Bogart’s at 10 a.m. and many vendors
were already set up when this occurred. There were also a
wet t-shirt contest and a trophy girl contest, always popular
events at any motorcycle rally or happening. In addition
to all of this, there was a Las Vegas trip giveaway that
included round-trip air and a three-night stay. Of course,
there was live music which was presented by LiveWire
classic rock band. This group laid down some very excellent
classic rock all afternoon long. They kept the large crowd
of people in attendance entertained while they were waiting
for the judging of the bikes.
A new wrinkle for this year was the addition of cash prizes
and trophies for the custom and stock classes. There was a
$500 cash prize awarded for the best of show, a $250 award
for the people’s choice bike, $100 for the first place winner
of the custom class, and a $50 check for best in stock class.
There was one small stipulation in order to receive the
monetary award. There had to be a minimum of four bikes
in your class.
The bikes were judged by Jim Furey, editor and publisher
of this magazine, and by Brad, the owner of Bogart’s. There
were a lot of excellent bikes entered in the show. And I can
tell you, that judging them and picking a winner were very
difficult, but the score sheets designed to aid in judging
helped quite a bit.
The winners were as follows:
Sportster Custom – Jim Rentchler
Sportster Stock- Joe Saxer
Antique – Dave
Touring Class – Dave
American V-Twin – Kevin Willis
Rat Class – Cameron Turner
Radical Custom – Greg “Too Tall” Lael
Metric Stock – Steve Alderson
Metric Custom – Jeff Hartwick
Stock Softtail – Kent Taylor
Custom Softtail – Ron Jackson
FX Stock – Mark Zimmer
FX Custom – Allen Fritz
This show was staged very professionally and is sure to
grow even larger, and with even stiffer competition in the
years to come. In part because of the addition of cash prizes,
but even more so because of the lengths the organizers and
sponsors go to make this a fun-filled day for all spectators
and participants. If you missed this year’s show make a
mental note right now to not miss next year’s Annual Bike
Show and Party in Jacksonville, IL.

Missouri and ended up at the Missouri Veteran’s home in
Cape Girardeau, where it turned warmer with plenty of
sunshine. There was food and drink available throughout
the afternoon. The Christian Motorcycle Association did
the blessing of the bikes; Jones Auction Service conducted
the live auction. Then it was on to the bike show, antique

the residents of the home. The bike show winners were as
follows:

and/or the annual October poker run. Please call the chapter
president, Harvey, at 573-545-4591. All moneys collected
or donated go to the individual veterans in the home. This
year $3970.17 in cash was donated and every penny went
to the veterans home in Cape Girardeau Missouri.
