******Membership Renewals and Validation Inspections.******
PLEASE READ THIS!!
By now you will have received your membership renewal documents. Please read and follow the instructions
carefully. If your vehicle(s) require a validation inspection you will also have received a separate letter from
the Registrars reminding you of this requirement.
There has been a slight change in the process from that outlined in the February Journal and the renewal
papers. Note that Log Books cannot be verified by the Registrars unless you can provide a 2014 membership
card to prove that you have paid your renewal.
For the Registrars to renew your log book you must provide them with the Log Book, current Registration
Document, Statutory Declaration, and Membership Card.
Your log book can be processed by any of the following means:
1. At meetings: Put all the above paperwork in an envelope with your name on the outside, and leave it
on the Registrars table and they will process and you can pick up at the end of the meeting.
2. Put all the paperwork in a stamped self addressed (but not sealed) envelope and leave with the
registrars at the meeting, and the completed documents will be posted to you soon thereafter.
3. Post all the paperwork together with a stamped self addressed envelope to GVVCVC Registrar, Brett
Unsworth, PO Box 506 Freeling SA 5372. He will process and return.
4. (Not preferred) Attend Validation days with the paperwork and get it processed there. It is desirable ,
however, that these days be reserved for validation inspections and if your vehicle does not need
inspection it is preferred that you use one of the above 3 options.
There is also a change to dates for Validation Inspections. The details are now:
• Saturday May 31st 9am to 2pm at Princess Park (Gawler Rec Centre)
•
•
Saturday June 28th 9am to 2 pm at Princess Park
Sunday June 29th 10am to 2pm at David and Pam Moule’s, 23 Seaview
Road, Yatala Vale
If your vehicle is due for inspection and you cannot present on these dates, please
contact one of the Registrars as shown on page 2 for an appointment. Validation
inspections will not be carried out on meeting nights, and you must take your
vehicle to the Registrar, they will not come to you.
From the Editor’s Desk
As indicated in the February edition of the Journal, this edition is running
late. Sylvia and I have enjoyed a great 6 weeks touring Tasmania
including participating in the 2014 Jowett National Rally in Hobart. As
Adelaide Plains flat land people we found the steep and windy roads of
Tasmania a bit daunting, particularly when we were hauling our 2 Tonne
Caravan around. The country was very dry with little signs of the green
pastures that we were expecting, but there is great scenery, heaps of
history, and lots to do.
For the motoring enthusiast, there is a lot of activity. We met two mainland clubs who were touring in their
old vehicles (from Newcastle NSW and Shepparton Vic), plus a number of individuals taking their older cars
for a tour of Tassie, including a couple from Darwin travelling in a very nice XP Falcon.
From a historical vehicle point of view, we visited the National Motor Museum (Tasmania) in Launceston, a
waste of time and money, the Wonders of Wynyard which focusses on early Ford vehicles including the
1903 Model A, the equal oldest Ford in the world (but it also has on show non Ford cars such as a Brush, the
first model V8 Cadillac, an IH Auto buggy, a 1913 Indian motorcycle, a Brough Superior motorcycle, and
other interesting vehicles), well worth the visit. The Bicheno Motorcycle Museum was also of interest with
over 30 motorcycles on display, mostly dating from the 1950s to the 1970s, and from British, Italian,
German and Japanese manufacturers. Woolmers Historic homestead had on display all the motor vehicles
ever owned by the Archer Family who lived there for 6 generations on display. They only ever owned 3 cars:
a 1913 Wolseley, a 1934 Dodge and a 1954 Dodge. The Wolseley is in good running order, the Dodges are a
bit down at heel.
Over 60 people with 26 Jowetts attended the National Rally which created a lot of local interest. There are
more active Jowett owners and Jowetts in Tasmania than there are in South Australia. Unfortunately there is
GVVCVC Journal April 2014.
Page 3
a collection of about 15 Jowetts under cover but not actively being maintained, one of which is a complete
1938 Jowett 10 which is probably the only one in Australia (The 10 was the only 4 cylinder Jowett prior to
the arrival of the Javelin and Jupiter in the late 1940s and 1950s).
Meanwhile back in the Gawler region you have had the 30th anniversary run to Angle Vale, and the Graham
National Rally, both events which appear to have created plenty of interest.
Coming up is the Annual Queens Birthday run to Moonta, your membership renewals, and vehicle validation
inspections, then in July the AGM of the club.
There is plenty happening: get involved!
Membership Report for April-May 2014-.

A BIG Welcome to you all
We now have 316 Memberships, comprising of 122 Singles,194 Joint giving us total of 510 members plus 2
Joint pending and 4 single.
There were wonderful attendances at the 30th Anniversary(150 people) and 70 at Bethany for the Graham
National Rally.
A special message from Ron:
Barbara and I, like some of the other members, have a concern regarding new members.
We feel that the existing members could pay more attention to them, especially in their
early days. We are a friendly group of people, so let’s show it to our new people.
We know that as creatures of habit we tend to gravitate to the same area at club meetings
whether it be here, Probus, Church, or any other meeting. Also it could be said that the
new members make themselves known, not everyone in a new surrounding can do this.
Let’s think about this and when you see a new member, or even an existing member that you haven’t spoken
to, say hullo and introduce yourself.
Vale Bernie O’Toole and Peter Callaghan
Sadly two of our number have passed away in the past 3 months.
Bernie O’Toole passed away on 1st February 2014 in hospital, result of an accident. Bernie was a current
active member whose smiling face could seen at many club meetings and events. His red 1929 Dodge DA
tourer often led the way and his display of pedal cars at the Gawler Swap Meet was a fixture. Bernie served
his apprenticeship in the railway workshops at Peterborough as a boilermaker/welder and later had his own
business in Port Lincoln before retiring to Willaston where he continued his hobbies of collecting all things
technical and helping others out. A packed church paid their respects to Bernie on Monday 10th February.
Peter Callaghan after a long illness passed away at Marron Nursing Home on 13th March 2014. Whilst Peter
was not a current member was very active in club activities and the historical vehicle movement until illness
prevented him from participating in club activities. He was a regular attendee at all meetings and enjoyed the
Sunday runs with his wife Evelyn. He was always recognizable for his immaculate appearance, always
wearing light coloured clothes, much to the worry of Alan Martin when Peter regularly visited his garage to
watch any ongoing restorations; Alan always had a supply of gloves for him.
Peter was our Federation Representative during the early days of the historic registration scheme; members
may not be aware it was during this period he noticed that there was an anomaly in the Emergency Services
levy charged on the 90 day registration. Peter on his own behalf wrote to the Minister, the Hon Robert
Brokenshire M.P and brought it to his attention that Historic vehicle owners were being charged the full
amount of $32.00 levy for 90 days, while other motorists received 365 days. This resulted in the levy being
reduced to $12.00 - metropolitan, and $8.00 – country, for the 90 day period.
Our condolences are extended to the families of both Bernie and Peter.

OLD WHEELS WHIRL FOR WOUNDED
Registrations are now open for a national car rally, which will see
100s of cars travelling from every corner of the country to converge
on Canberra in September.
Started in support of Soldier On, an Australian charity that cares for
men and women wounded in contemporary conflicts, the rally will
feature vehicles manufactured before 1974.
Lieutenant General Peter Leahy (Ret’d), Chairman of Soldier On
and Patron for the rally, said he was excited to see how many car
enthusiasts would meet the challenge set by organisers, who have
set a target of $1000 in fundraising for each participant.
LTGEN Leahy said the money and awareness that could be raised
by the event would mean more wounded men and women would
get the help they needed from Soldier On.
Drivers will start on September 17th (QLD, NT, WA, SA) 18th
(TAS, VIC, NSW) and arrive for a reception in Canberra on the
20th. The rally will wind its way through many rural towns
throughout Australia, giving residents a chance to see classic
vehicles from a bygone era.
To enter the rally, you can visit

****Fill out your log book****
It looks like the Police could be targetting Historic registered cars. This came from a fellow Register
member who sent this as a warning to us all!!!
“I heard today about a club that had an outing recently where they were travelling along Cross Rd and must
have passed one of those roadside radar units possibly near our place
Subsequently several members were visited by the police who requested to see their log books
Several had not completed them for that event and they were fined $800 each for non compliance with the
rules of classic car registration
I always fill mine in when I go for a spin but there have been times when I have gone to get fuel and haven't
bothered
I can't vouch for the accuracy but a bit of a worry”
Note that the content has not been verified, but you should be aware of the potential. Brett Unsworth has
advised that “This information would be correct as they have been doing it for years on the Bay to Birdwood
if you are caught speeding or red light camera they won't send out a fine they will deliver it and ask for your
log book at the same time to see if it was filled in for that day”
If you have not filled out your log book your vehicle is classified as unregistered and uninsured. If you have
an accident whilst on the road you will have major issues with the Police and your Insurance Company
People who lend cars for weddings may face jail
This release from the ABC was dated 13 February 2014. I am not aware of any updates but it reinforces that
Dept Transport inspectors are looking hard at use of vehicles for weddings (whether they be historic or
standard rego) It appears that genuine use for family events is OK but you may have to defend yourself if
challenged.
An MP says a threat has been made to prosecute people who have lent their cars to family or friends for
weddings.
Family First MP Robert Brokenshire says several of his constituents in Adelaide have received warning
letters after their cars were photographed being used for weddings.
He said a letter from the Transport Department claimed anyone running transport passenger services without
accreditation can face penalties of up to four years' jail or a $15,000 fine.
The owner of a vintage car said he was shocked to get a letter threatening to prosecute him for lending it to a
family friend for a wedding.
Kevin May says he had been warned of the risk of jail or a fine for lending his 1969 XW GT Falcon to a
bridal party.
He is demanding the warning be withdrawn immediately, saying it is an infringement of his human rights.
"I was quite upset about it at first - I thought it was a joke - and then when I studied the letter properly, you
could see it had numbers on there and it was definitely an official letter and I thought 'God, blimey charlie, I
was only trying to help someone out'," he said.
"I wasn't trying to get a fine - $15,000 is a lot of money."
Mr Brokenshire said the SA Government had gone mad.
"It's one thing to be out there catching rogues ... that are impersonating accredited hire car companies but
when a family friend lends the Subaru or the Ford Falcon to a friend for a wedding and they receive a
demanding prosecution letter, it's absolutely outrageous," he said.
"Are the Government so tight with financial management at the moment that they're hitting innocent people
with significant fines?
"I mean this is absolutely wrong. A person should be able to lend their car legitimately to a friend for a
wedding without intimidation or fear of a fine or prosecution."
Transport Department manager for passenger transport, Bill Gonis, said the letters were only to inform
people what was legally allowed.
"It's a letter of warning and advising them if they want to speak to someone at the office we are more than
happy to help them with any inquiry they may have," he said.
"If they're simply just providing that service for a friend of theirs that's fine, that's the end of that. Again I
just have to make that clear that we're not prosecuting people who are simply driving their friends around.
"This is just really about ensuring public safety if some of these vehicles are going out, [ensuring] that some
of these vehicles are roadworthy."

Run Reports
Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to
report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting
and is on the web site at http://gawlercarclub.com/pdfs/run_report_template.pdf . Reports should include some statistics
on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by
the Editor and the Webmaster.
Editor’s Note: Plenty of photos were received for events held in this period, but not many stories. Thanks to
those who have contributed. If this part of the Journal is to be retained more input from members is required
please.
Australia Day Run Sunday 26th January 2014
By Trun
Another huge turnout for a fantastic traditional Australia Day Picnic
organised by the Barossa Valley Historic Vehicle Club.
A great venue at Greenock Sports Ground with plenty of shade and
picnic games with car related equipment like wind in rocker cover
racing, tube rolling, piston ring hooky and clutch disk quoits.
Thanks to all the organisers for an enjoyable day.
Sparrow run to Kersbrook Sunday February 2nd
By Trun
The hot weather kept many away but the stayers enjoyed a pleasant run to Kersbrook via Sandy Creek and a
chance to catch up with fellow members for a chat over breakfast. Good to see some different vehicles on
this run
Mannum Picnic Run Sunday February 23rd
by June Kent
What a great day we had thanks to the organizers of the Mannum picnic run, we had a pleasant time sitting
on the riverbank lawns having a chit chat and lunch, the highlight of the day was the surprise for the ladies
only.
For those who were adventurous and wished to participate, they were treated to a river cruise on Graham
Butler river cruiser, before casting off, Captain Graham gave the customarily emergency safety
demonstration i.e. lifebelts stowage and exit procedures (jump overboard),not quite the same standard as the
trolley dollies on Qantas!
After that Captain Graham ordered his crew to jump to it and cast off, not quite to the R.N. Standards but
quickly carried out by the deck crew Able Seaman B Collins and Ordinary Seaman T Bellchambers, Dabtoe
was AWOL
The hour long sedate cruise was interesting and gave the passengers a different view of what was on the river
i.e. the new marina complex and the river life.
GVVCVC Journal April 2014.
Page 8
Having been a member for a long time I believe this was a first for the ladies of the club, and it was quite
interesting to hear their views and comments on the runs.
Thanks for a enjoyable day
All British Day Sunday February 8th
By Trun
The weather was very favourable with a perfect day for the All British Day
pre-run breakfast held at the Cudlee Creek Memorial Hall.
Our crew of very dedicated volunteers were up and running serving a
scrumptious egg & bacon breakfast to the run participants by 07:30 am.
Corrie Wake unveiled his latest project, an all green Morris Cooper “S”.
The run to Echunga & All British Day commenced at 09:00 am heading
through Lobethal, Woodside & Hahndorf.
We were placed on the main oval displaying approximately 22 vehicles
including guests from the Mildura, Maps & NARC Clubs.
Others members also displayed vehicles with their Marque Clubs.
Entertainments & activities were operating throughout the day, including trade
stalls, numerous raffles each hour, the running of the Merlin engine and of
course what British event would be complete without the “Morris Dancers”.
A truly great day.
Thanks to Trevor Evans for co-coordinating the day and his team of
volunteers. Paul & Marianne Modra, John & Karen Carter, Bob Carr and
Corrie Wake
Crabbing Run to Webb Beach Wednesday March 19th
Bruce Williams
Around 30 club members arrived at the beach house of Bob and Maureen Collins
on the foreshore of Web beach. We didn’t meet at The Jenkin’s this time as they
are on an overseas trip to Tassie
The Collins Beachhouse is grand and has a great view from the upstairs balcony.
The Bellchambers nice beach house close by was used as well for backup.
We had really good weather for crabbing with only slight breeze and a great sunny day of 26c. There were
quite lot of crabs around but as usual mostly small, but we ended up with 44 legal size to cook. Thanks to
the Russels for organising the coffee and biscuits. Also thanks to the other ladies for their homemade
delights. Bob did a fine job of cooking and I guess that he has had a lot of experience. One club member
went in disguise after a previous encounter and was not noticed . This time there was no submarine tractor to
look at but we all thoroughly enjoyed our day on the Webb and thanks to Bob and Maurine and the
Bellchambers for their help
The Gathering Sunday March 16th
By Trun
On the 16th of March we headed off from Surrey Downs to Anzac Highway to the annual “Gathering”
hosted by the Vintage Sports Car Club.
Four wooden wheelers and a modern assembled at the Surrey Downs Shopping Centre for a 10:00 am start.
David & Pam Moule – 1926 Oldsmobile Sedan. David Prest – 1927 Willys Whippet Tourer. Geoff Zschorn
– 1926 Willys Whippet Doctor’s Roadster. Trevor Unsworth – 1916 Willys Overland.
GVVCVC Journal April 2014.
Page 9
We headed down North East Road and through the city to Anzac Highway with no drama or incidents unlike
last year’s run.
There were many vehicles on display from several participating clubs, many other Gawler Club members
and vehicles were also present.
Bruce & Annie Williams – Mercedes. Kevin & Eileen Draper – 1928 A Ford Tourer. Elaine Howson – 1928
A Ford Tourer.
The weather was favourable for our picnic lunch and a pleasurable afternoon was had viewing dozens of
beautifully prepared vehicles and catching up with many acquaintances.
The event was supported by Shannon’s & Penrite who had trade displays set up.
Penrite Oil showed a keen interest in supporting the Car Club movement and gave away many calendars and
promotional stickers and literature, they also had three door prizes of cash vouchers to purchase their

A great day and event to showcase our club and our vehicles.
Thanks to the Vintage Sports Car Cub for their organization of the day.
GVVCVC 30 th Anniversary at Virgaras Winery Sunday March 30th
The Editor received no report on this prime event of our calendar but photographer Trevor provided lots of
pictures of which a selection is given here. It looks like a really great family day, sorry we missed it! A full
set of pics may be seen on the club web site, where I discovered someone had written a report as follows:
The Gawler car club’s 30th Anniversary was held on the 30th March 2014 at Virgara Wines grounds at
Angle Vale.
The weather was perfect and the grounds were superb.
The venue has plenty of room and the club members cars were arriving around 10.30 am and most were able
to take advantage of the shady trees.
Members ‘signed in’ at the club tent and purchased the 30th Anniversary run plaques and at the same time
were able to purchase club 30th Anniversary bottles of Port suitably labeled to acknowledge the occassion.
Most had a relaxing day just enjoying each others company and a look at the fine assembly of lovely cars of
the past
There was a Driving Skills event for those who wished to participate incorporating reversing to see how
close you could reverse to an object without hitting that object.
Winners were selected in male and female category. Thank you to those who attended and to see so many
was gratifying considering there was actually quite a lot of activities planned by other organisations on the
day
Congratulations to all.

Graham Paige meet us at Bethany for Pie Floaters and Fruit salad 06-04-14
Bruce Williams
The April breakfast run to the Monkey Nut at Lyndoch was extended to a pie floater lunch at Bethany Park
to welcome the Graham Paige National Rally to the Barossa.
A good turnout of older vehicles assembled at the Tafe car park at 8:00 am for the usual 8:30 am start and
headed along the Valley Highway to Lyndoch.
The Monkey Nut provided our members with a buffet breakfast of enormous proportion and I am sure no left
wanting, especially with anticipation of a pie floater at lunch.
With a little time to spare after breakfast we dispersed to the local shops and venues in the area.
Some of us visited GM day held on the Tanunda Oval and checked out the many vehicles on display, some
from our own club members.
At lunch time we proceeded to Bethany Park for the famous pie floater lunch provided by Kaye & Corrie
Wake and the team.
Gavin Launer welcomed the guests to the GVV&CVC and to the Barossa facilities.
After a pleasant afternoon viewing the many Graham Paige vehicles on display and meeting the far travelled
owners, some from the US, we made our way home with an enjoyable cruise via Williamstown and Chain of
ponds.
Thanks to Fred Chapman and Corrie Wake and the team for organising another great club activity enjoyed
by all.

Restoration Workshops
by Trun
On Saturday the 15th March ex member and GURU professional painter Ron Sellers was coaxed out of
retirement to put the final coats of paint onto the Triumph.
Ron used four coats and demonstrated his techniques as he progressed. His professional approach was quick
and decisive leaving a brilliant finish for us to proceed.
The third coat was a mixture of colour and clear to give a harder surface and the last coat was mostly thinner
to blend and retard the final surface.
A demonstration in Origami to show how to prepare the wet rub paper and the use of soapy water was also of
interest.
Assembly and final polish can now commence.
A huge thanks to Ron Sellers for his contribution and passing on many interesting skills of the trade, I am
sure many of us gained plenty, I know I did.
Some more pics as the car moves towards completion (see also next page). When completed it is to be
raffled off with tickets at $5 each, to be drawn at our Christmas show. Do some of these people really know
what they are doing? We are hoping that the bemused look on Trevor Evan’s face does not mean major
problems!

Auto Flick
Thank you to all who have contributed items for “Auto Flick”, our online sharing of interesting snippets and
videos about the automotive world. Autoflick has been quiet during March and April due to the editor being
on holidays, and there is a considerable back log of snippets which you may have received in the past few
days.
A warning to contributors: Large files are difficult to pass on and I will not be sharing these with club
members. Please limit contributions to files of less than 1 MB. Links to videos such as YouTube are
preferred, such messages are only a few KB in size.
A warning to users: Large video clips can use up your internet allocation quickly. I will attempt to put a
warning on large clips so that you can decide if you wish to watch them.
Since our policy is to share only automotive trivia on Auto Flick, contributions of a non automotive nature
will not be passed on, even though some of them are quite entertaining.
Here is one of those others you may care to look at. It is a live, unrehearsed clip from a TV show hosted by
Bill Cosby and gives Abbott and Costello’s spiff on “Who’s on First” a run for its money!

You can also hear the original “Who’s on First” at http://www.baseball-almanac.com/humor4.shtml

Tell me again how he broke his collarbone?
As told by reporter Rebecca Dudley in the Brush, Colorado, News Tribune
My ex-husband had this annoying habit of bringing greasy old carburettors and things into the house to work on. So,
last week, when my friend called to tell me this story, my first response was, “Where did this guy live?”
Now reassured that I was never related to him by marriage, this really is too hilarious not to share.
The way my friend told it, this guy pushed his motorcycle from the patio into his living room, where he began to clean
the engine with some rags and a bowl of gasoline. When he finished, he sat on the motor cycle and decided to start it to
make sure everything was still OK. Unfortunately, the bike started in gear, and crashed through the glass patio door
with him still clinging to the handlebars. His wife had been working in the kitchen. She came running at the noise, and
found him crumpled on the patio, badly cut from the shards of broken glass. She called 911 and the paramedics
transported the guy to the emergency room.
So far, the story is humorous - in a “that is what you get for being a big enough lout to bring your motorcycle into the
house” kind of way.
But here is where I really split a gut. Later that afternoon, after many stitches had pulled her husband back together, the
wife brought him home and put him to bed. She cleaned up the mess in the living room, and dumped the bowl of
gasoline in the toilet.
Shortly thereafter, her husband woke up, lit a cigarette, and went into the bathroom. He sat down and tossed the
cigarette into the toilet, which promptly exploded because the wife had not flushed the gasoline away. The explosion
blew the man through the bathroom door.
The wife heard the explosion and her husband’s screams. She ran into the hall and found him lying on the floor with his
trousers blown away and burns on his buttocks, The wife again ran to the phone and called for an ambulance.
The same two paramedics were dispatched to the scene. They loaded the husband on the stretcher and began carrying
him to the street. One of them asked the wife how the injury had occurred. When she told them, they begun laughing so
hard that they dropped the stretcher, and broke the guy’s collarbone.
Talk about instant karma.

PONTIAC’S ROYAL DUTY
Rodney Bain is a recent new member of the Gawler Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club, joining
because he has acquired a 1949 Pontiac Silver Streak sedan with quite a distinguished history.
This car was built at Holden’s Woodville plant in late 1949 and was
completed at Holden’s Birkenhead plant. It is defined as being a
Pontiac Silver Streak Sedan, Series 49/254, 6 cylinder side valve
motor 30.4 Horsepower, manual gearbox. It has body No 3 of about
300 of this series built. New price was £1,334/5/0 plus tax.
It was sold in early 1950 by Motors Pty Ltd of Launceston,
Tasmania to Colonel D Cameron, a wealthy grazier of Mona Vale
Station near Ross in Tasmania (see Editors Note below).
In 1954 the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of
Edinburgh were driven in the Pontiac from Mona Vale to
Connerville Station near Cressey during the Coronation tour of
Australia.
After this event the car became more of a show piece than a vehicle
used on a daily basis. It remained in the Cameron Family but in 1997
it was repainted with higher quality in its original colour (white).
This has been the only restoration work done on the vehicle, and the
interior and mechanicals are all original.
The car was sold to Mr Lee Blair Jenke of Victor Harbor SA, a collector of vintage cars, who, like the
Cameron Family pampered it and gave it little use. Due to ill health Mr Jenke sold his collection in 2014 and
the Pontiac was purchased by the current owner, Mr Rodney McLaren Bain, of Williamstown SA whose
intent is to look after it and drive it occasionally on good roads in good weather.
The car has done less that 20,000 miles in 64 years and is about to undergo its 20,000 mile service (less than
300 miles per year!)
Editors Note: During our recent visit to Tasmania, Sylvia
and I attempted to obtain more information about the car
and Mona Vale during a visit to Ross. The visitor’s centre at
Ross advised that Mona Vale Station is still owned by the
Cameron Family, but no access is available as it is private
property. They were unable to provide more information on
the car. Mona Vale is typical of many colonial properties in
Tasmania. Completed in 1867, it is well locally known as the
“Calendar House” for its reportedly 365 windows, 52
rooms, 12 chimneys and seven entrances.
It was built by Robert Kermode and designed by William Archer, whose family owned Woolmers which is
mentioned in the editorial. It has received multiple royal visits over its lifetime. In 1868, Alfred, Duke of
Edinburgh visited, and later the then Duke of York (future King George VI) and the Duchess of York visited
in 1927, with then Queen Elizabeth II in 1954. It was purchased by the Cameron family in the 1920s
Introducing Rod Bain:
Rod commenced his apprenticeship as a tool maker with Holden’s at Woodville in 1953 when the 48/215
was still coming down the production line. After completing his apprenticeship he moved to the Elizabeth
Plant to work on the tooling try out in the new plant. He later became a tool design draftsman and for 9
years designed dies for up to 250Ton press capacity. He then returned to the floor in a management
position and took over the subassembly plant for Australasia and also part of the hardware press plant. He
left Holdens after 25 years of service and then established his own business. He is now retired and keen to
join in with the activities of the GVVCVC.

Jowett Jupiter
When the Editor turned up at the October meeting of the GVVCVC with a
Jowett Jupiter in tow, it created a fair bit of interest. As a result members have
provided since interesting information.
This is the Jupiter that I had in tow. It broke down on the return trip from
Snowtown due to a fuel pump problem, and was swapped for our Javelin on
the trailer. This car was originally owned by John Michell of the Michell wool
family (John passed away last year) and is now owned by Tim Kelly and
family of Forreston. The car was one of 3 delivered by British Engineering
Appliances (better known as BEA Motors) in early 1953. The others were
delivered to John Haig (of Haig’s Chocolates) and John Southcott (of Southcott
Engineering).
Bob Collins indicated that Barry Wasley of Mallala once owned a Jupiter. I
have been in contact with Lois Wasley, Barry’s widow, and she has pleasant
memories of this car, which they had to sell on when son Mark arrived as there
was no room for the baby basinet. It is believed that this car is now also owned
by the Kelly family.
The Jupiter was built using aluminium panels on a space frame chassis, which
made it amenable to coach built bodies and numerous bodies were provided.
No less that 8 chassis were imported into Australia and bodied here either in
aluminium or fibreglass. Survivors are few and far between.
The Duckett Jupiter was Australian bodied and is now owned by Ed Wolf in
Sydney. He drove it in the 2012 Bay to Birdwood and competes in historic
racing events.
Bob Collins provided me with an article from Thoroughbred and Classic Cars
April 1999 on the Mead Jupiter. It is believed that Richard Mead built 6 cars.
In 1999 only 2 were known to exist, one in the UK and one in NZ. The UK one
is now in Australia and is owned by Frank and Mary Choate who have a
property at Callington but spends most of their time in Sydney.
John Drage brought to my attention a Jupiter available for sale in UK on the
website bringyourtrailer.com This 1951 Jowett Jupiter Mk I (chassis No. 89) is
said to be one of only two sport convertible bodied examples by coachbuilder
Abbott of Farnham.
Farina also got into the act and made 4 very nice looking coupes, all of which
survive.
The Jowett factory also turned out a series of special bodies for racing Jupiters
particularly for the LeMans competition and these were designated from R1
through to R4. In June 1951 an R1 won the 1500cc class in the Le Mans 24
hour. The R4 was a genuine 100 mph car intended for road use but only 3 were
made before Jowett Cars ceased manufacture. (note that Jowett continued as
Jowett Engineering, specializing in Defense contracts). The R4 was designed
by Roy Lunn of Jowett Cars who went on to Ford UK after Jowett Cars ceased
production and designed the Ford Anglia 105E, and then moved to the USA
where he headed up the design team for the Ford Mustang and the Ford GT40.
In 1971 he joined American Motors where he headed up the development of
the Jeep brand.

Another Zeta!
Yes Bob, there is another Zeta, and it was manufactured before
Harold Lightburn came up with his Zeta. The Fairthorpe Zeta was
manufactured in Britain and introduced in 1960 but very few were
made and only one is known to survive.
It had a few things in common with the Lightburn Zeta. The body
was fibreglass, with external door hinges, and Fairthorpe
manufactured microcars before developing this rocket.
Early Fairthorpes ran Ecelsior 250cc engines with chain drive and a
more imaginative approach was a BSA 650cc coupled to a standard
8 gearbox. Bodies for all models were open coupes.
Motive power for the Zeta came from a Ford Zephyr Six engine
fitted with a Raymond Mays (of BRM fame) cylinder head with 6
Amal carburetors, producing 102kW or 137 bhp, and the car
weighed about 650Kg. The car had a considerable reputation for
speed providing it was in a straight line but the heavy motor
impacted on its cornering ability. Top speed was reputed to be
190Km/h.
The photos are of the surviving car in competition in 1960 and as it
is today.
Elaine’s Tomato bush
Dear Alvin,
You may recall that I dug a tiny [2 inch]
tomato plant out of the footpath gravel at
Port Wakefield on 20-11-13.
Several people thought that I was weeding!
The tomatoes are still green but as I will be
away on holiday when they ripen I wanted
to make sure I was able to share how it has
grown! The plant is about 4 feet tall and
still growing.
Regards
Elaine Howson
