EARLY TRAVIS COUNTY CITIZENS
i i i l l i a m Do Glascock grew t o manhood i n Pittsylvania County, Virginia where
he was born about 1815, He was a descendant of an early Virginia family from
England, t h a t w a s i n America by 1643, It i s believed t h a t he and his brother,
Zebulon Pike Glascock, attended Princeton University i n New Jersey about 1833,
He was in Madison County, Alabama by 183L, where he married, He brought h i s
wife Salina A, and daughter Anne Elizabeth t o Texas about 1839, s e t t l i n g i n
Bastrop County, The family probably lived on p a r t of a 474-acre tract of land,
owned by Glascock, on Sandy Greek, e a s t of the Colorado River, on the southwest half of the Enoch Harris League,
The Glascocks' four sons w e r e born i n Bastrop County; three of them fought
f o r t h e Confederacy during t h e C i v i l War, The youngest daughter was born i n
Travis County,
I n t h e spring of 1842 he was a private i n Captain James H, Gillespie's
Company of volunteers f r o m Bastrop County, undep General Edward Burleson i n
t h e Vasquez Campaign, They were dispatched t o San Antonio f o r six weeks when
General Rafael Wasquea and his men were a t h r e a t - t o t h a t city, H i s two brothers, Thomas G. and Zebulon Pike Glascock, a l s o serwed i n the Campaign,
The family w a s on the move again, by 1850 the Glascocks had s e t t l e d i n a
pecan grove north of iVilliamson Creek i n southwest Travis County, part of a
320-acre t r a c t of land deeded t o him by h i s uncle, Thomas Anderson,
The homestead land was cleared, l o g houses were b u i l t f o r the family and
slave quarters, both w i t h rock f i r e places, The building logs used were
brought f r o m a sax m i l l i n Bastrop County, One of h i s slaves was an aged
Negro man by t h e name of Moses Hind,
He i s believed t o have changed h i s c a t t l e brand a f t e r h e came t o Travis
County from WG" t o a "Texas Star", probably so as not to c o n f l i c t w i t h h i s
neighbor, W i l l i a m Grumbles's brand,
S a r a h F, Barker, widow of Leman Barker of Bastrop County, was l i v i n g with
her son, W i l l i a m Do Glascock and h i s family i n 1850, She i s believed t o have
operated the Barker House, vvith her son Thomas G o Glascock, which was located
between Pecan and h i s dl Arc. Streets, (6th & 7 t h ), The Barker House was
formCPly the Eberly House, owned by Mrs, Angelina Eberly, who was famous f o r
food as w l l as her part i n the Archives Nar i n 1842, Sarah was the daughter
of Colonel Daniel Coleman of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, She died i n
February 1860,
iVilliam Do Glascock owned several t r a c t s of land i n Bastrop and Travis
County a t t h e time of h i s death i n June 1853, including a town l o t i n the
City of Austin a t Pine (5th ) and San Jacinto Street, where p a r t of the present
day drive-in f a c i l i t i e s of the Austin National Bank are located,
He i s believed t o be buried i n an unmarked grave i n a small family cemetery
on the old home place near 'Iyilliamson Creek, The Glascocks were the f i r s t
s e t t l e r s i n the area now known as Oak H i l l , Texas,
