t was another successful year for the
annual Senior Games hosted by the
Barshop Jewish Community Center!
Seniors are staying more and more active,
so events such as the Senior Games have
become very popular. From basketball to
Bocce to scrabble, there is something of
interest for everyone.
A Two-Mile Fun Walk at Brackenridge
Park kicked-off the games. Athletes from
Independence Hill Retirement Community
were filled with enthusiasm. Even some of
the age-appropriate staff members joined
the residents in several competitions!
“Spending this special time with the
residents, either as a team mate or cheering
them on is something I look forward to each
year,” said Martha Anderson, staff member
at Independence Hill. “It is not just for
serious athletes but for anyone who enjoys
the sport.”
Independence Hill is a proud sponsor
of the Senior Games and was very well
represented with 45 participants. At
I
age 91, Mrs. Betty Draper, a resident at
Independence Hill, took home three gold

and lifelong athlete; Mrs. Draper is still an
avid swimmer.
Ms. Patricia Shecter won bronze and
silver in swimming, plus gold in golf, while
Mr. Delbert Hemmen took the bronze in
both the 10k run and bowling.
And Independence Hill didn’t stop there!
Also earning bronze medals in bowling
were Ms. Pauline Hamel, Mrs. Pita Romero,
Ms. Melanie Sullivan, Mr. Cappy Pabon and
Independence Hill’s very own Mrs. Chickie
Backhaus. Golf medalists included Ms. Pam
Westwood, who took home the gold, and
Mr. Charles Walker.
“We are known for having fun at
Independence Hill, so we had cheerleaders
not only to encourage our residents, but all
of the Senior Games participants,” remarked
Chickie Backhaus, Outreach Coordinator.
“We love for our residents to be fit and
active, so we continuously encourage and
promote fitness and exercise programs
