THIS MONTH’S
HIGHLIGHTS

this month will
hopefully be a few
days of warm
weather and times
of rest and
refreshment.

Dear Friends, our calendar for the month fits easily onto the back page with space
to spare and for most people that is a good thing. It gives us time to spend with
friends and family. You might be able to have a few days out and enjoy the beautiful
countryside surrounding us. And a very friendly welcome if you are a holiday maker
picking up this newsletter. For some it is the busiest time of the year as farmers
pray hard for dry days in order to turn the fields and gather crops and to store up
feed for the winter. But spare a thought for those whose failing health means
getting out and about is not so easy. Perhaps you know someone this August who’d
enjoy a nice natter! Rev Sharon
COLLECTS AND READINGS
7th August: 11th Sunday after Trinity Proper 14
Readings: Genesis 15.1-6; Hebrews 11.1-3,8-16;
Luke 12.32-40
Collect: God of glory, the end of our searching, help
us to lay aside all that prevents us from seeking your
kingdom, and to give all that we have to gain the
pearl beyond all price, through our Saviour Jesus
Christ.
Post Communion: Lord of all mercy, we your
faithful people have celebrated that one true
sacrifice which takes away our sins and brings
pardon and peace: by our communion keep us firm
on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us
from all sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
14th August: 12th Sunday after Trinity Proper 15
Readings: Jeremiah 23.23-29; Hebrews 11.29-12.2;
Luke 12.49-56
Collect: God of constant mercy, who sent your Son
to save us: remind us of your goodness, increase
your grace within us, that our thankfulness may
grow, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Post Communion: God of all mercy, in this Eucharist
you have set aside our sins and given us your
healing: grant that we who are made whole in Christ
may bring that healing to this broken world, in the
name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
21st August: 13th Sunday after Trinity Proper 16
Readings: Isaiah 58.9b-end; Hebrews 12.18-end;
Luke 13.10-17
Collect: Almighty God, you search us and know us:
may we rely on you in strength and rest on you in
weakness, now and in all our days; through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Post Communion: God our creator, you feed your
children with the true manna, the living bread from
heaven: let this holy food sustain us through our
earthly pilgrimage until we come to that place
where hunger and thirst are no more; through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
28th August: 14th Sunday after Trinity Proper 17
Readings: Ecclesiasticus 10.12-18, Hebrews 13.18, 15-16; Luke 14.1, 7-14
Collect: Merciful God, your Son came to save us and
bore our sins on the cross: may we trust in your
mercy and know your love, rejoicing in the
righteousness that is ours through Jesus Christ our
Lord.
Post Communion: Lord God, the source of truth and
love, keep us faithful to the apostles' teaching and
fellowship, united in prayer and the breaking of
bread, and one in joy and simplicity of heart, in
Jesus Christ our Lord.

Developing our ministry in Axbridge
Deanery
On Tuesday 23rd August we welcome a new clergy member
of our Deanery, Reverend Jonathan Philpott. Jonathan will
be priest-in-charge of Berrow and Brean and will also be
working across the Deanery coordinating training and events
to encourage mission and ministry. The aim is to work across
parish boundaries to offer training in leading worship,
pastoral care, pilgrim courses, youth events, safeguarding
and anything else we can think of!
To raise funds for this ministry, Rev Sharon, Rural Dean
Axbridge Deanery, is undertaking a sponsored walk on
Thursday 25th August around Cheddar Reservoir – up to ten
times!
A sponsor form is available if you feel you can support our
Rural Dean’s attempt!
And you are welcome to join Sharon on the day. Please see
the form for details.
A Diocesan Prayer
Gracious God, may your Holy Spirit guide us into the
future.
Help us, throughout the diocese, to show uninhibited
reliance on your grace and power as we seek renewal
of our lives.
Give us courage, vigour, imagination and generosity in
order that your kingdom may come and abundant life
be known by all. Amen

diocesan strategy and to watch a video presented by Bishop
