Metropole Hotel Brochure 2014
An iconic building…
Overlooking the working fishing harbour town of Padstow, construction of The Metropole Hotel
started in 1900 and was completed in 1904. The hotel’s prominent position and elegant late Victorian
architecture quickly found favour with guests, who would often arrive by train, thanks to the railway
expansion into Cornwall in the late 1800s.
The Metropole has had its share of famous visitors, including the Duke of Windsor when he was
Prince of Wales in the 1930s. A keen golfer, he used the hotel as his base when playing at St. Enodoc
Golf Course – and rumour has it that Mrs Simpson joined him on a number of occasions. During
World War Two, the hotel was requisitioned by the Admiralty and became an Operational Base for the
W.R.A.S. The Metropole was expanded in 1960 to its current size.
With its superb views, well-proportioned interiors and excellent food, The Metropole continues to hold
pride of place in Padstow. Keith Richardson purchased the hotel in 2002 and has carried out a number
of refurbishments that highlight the hotel’s heritage and striking architecture.
The Metropole is an AA four star hotel and also holds an AA Rosette for Fine Dining.
A stunning location…
Situated on the stunning north coast of Cornwall, with its swooping clifftops and glorious beaches,
The Metropole Hotel sits in its own extensive landscaped gardens and has wonderful views of Padstow
harbour and the Camel Estuary. We are just a short stroll from the picturesque harbour and town, with
its cluster of quirky shops and winding streets. You can also catch a boat across the estuary to Rock.
Cornwall is surrounded by beaches. It is also an ecological delight, with
heaths, moorland, rolling hills, soaring cliffs and quiet meadows, all of
which are havens for wildlife and fascinating plant species.
Gaze out to sea…
We have 58 individually and comfortably
furnished bedrooms, many with magnificent
views over Padstow harbour or Camel Estuary.
Our garden level rooms open straight out onto
our sea facing garden.
Offering a variety of room categories,
including double, family and premier rooms,
all are en-suite, and include tea and coffee
making facilities, hairdryer, TV and toiletries as
standard. Our premier rooms, which include 2
rooms with beautiful 4-poster beds, offer some
extra special touches to make your stay even
more comfortable.
Exceptional food…
Padstow is a ‘foodie’ paradise and here, at The Metropole, we are proud of our award-winning
restaurant and café bar. We hold an AA Rosette for fine dining and are also recommended in the
Cornish Accredited Restaurant Guide. With so much delicious seafood and other fabulous local
produce available, our team of chefs work hard to create mouthwatering menus for our guests.
Our Harbour Restaurant has a daily changing Table d’Hôte menu and an extensive wine list, and our
café bar menu offers a range of snacks and lighter meals. We also serve traditional Cornish cream
teas – best enjoyed on our outside terrace area, overlooking the sea!
Relax…
The Metropole is the perfect place to relax – and the best way to start is by sitting on our terrace,
watching the fishing boats sail back to the harbour as the sun goes down over the Camel Estuary.
Our newly opened Marine Spa Treatment Rooms offer a range of massages and beauty treatments
and we have an outdoor swimming pool, open in the summer months.
However, our greatest facility is the easy access to the great outdoors – the stunning north coast of
Cornwall and beyond.
Celebrate…
We are fully licensed for Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnerships. With a choice of celebration rooms,
most with panoramic views over the water and harbour, we can cater for intimate gatherings or
grander scale celebrations.
We’ll help you to co-ordinate every detail, whether you are planning your wedding, an anniversary gettogether, birthday party or other special occasion. You’ll have a choice of beautiful celebration rooms,
award-winning food and spectacular surroundings. Our landscaped gardens and outdoor terrace are
perfect for photo or video opportunities. We are also able to arrange a marquee on the lawn for those
who want to take full advantage of our fabulous views!
Padstow and beyond…
One of Cornwall’s most famous harbour towns, Padstow is probably best known for its wonderful
seafood. It also has a fascinating history with some very unusual traditions and local customs,
including the intriguing ‘Obby ‘Oss festival, held each year in May.
There are several fantastic beaches on the doorstep, and plenty of activities for all ages – from boat
trips, surfing and sailing to cycling the Camel Trail, and from visiting some of Cornwall’s famous
gardens or heritage properties to walking the South West Coast Path. Keen golfers will find some
excellent golf courses within easy driving distance.
The beautiful Camel Estuary…
