Happy New Year!
It was a pleasure working
with so many of you over the holidays and I hope that
you enjoyed your gatherings here at the club as much
as the staff and I did. I’m very excited to usher in a
new year here at Rolling Hills Country Club and look
forward to continued growth in our membership and
catering departments. I can’t emphasize enough how
grateful I am to all of you who have referred friends
and family, our greatest sales resource is you. To all of

ask if there’s anything we can do to help you make the
most of your membership at the Club. We have many
great events planned in 2013 for you. Come and enjoy
your Club with new and old friends.
As always, if you know someone who may be interested in membership, please feel free to pass their information along to me and I’ll do the rest. I wish all of

The Stock
Report
By Jason Stock
Head Golf Professional
Most of the major club manufacturers will be
presenting their newest product soon. Here is a
sampling of what lies ahead:
Taylor Made has made some major changes
again introducing the R1 driver and RBZ stage
2 driver and fairways. The R1 can be adjusted
for loft 8.5 degree up to 11.5 degrees and face
angle (closed, neutral, open). The RBZ stage 2
driver and fairways are adjustable as well and
promise to be even “hotter” than the 2012
version.
Nike Golf is introducing the Covert line of
drivers, fairways and irons. With the world’s
first high speed cavity back driver you will be
hitting it further and straighter. The Covert
driver can also change loft 8.5 degree thru 12
degrees and face angle.
Titleist the 913 drivers were introduced in
November and coming soon will be the 913
Fairways and hybrids. Incorporating a new
hosel and sleeve (the adjustable part of the club)
the center of gravity is lower. This produces a
higher launch and lower spin to the ball which
equals more distance.
I ask that you continue to make us your first
choice when it comes to equipment. Remember these brand new clubs will be sold here at
RHCC at our everyday low price. One quick
example of this came at our Titleist Scotty
Cameron demo day in December. One of our
members was pleasantly surprised to find out
the putter he picked that day was $60 less than
a local discount golf store. Combine low prices
with our PGA professional staff who are certified club fitters with the above companies and
you can’t go wrong.
Keep it down the middle!

December was another memorable month with
numerous holiday activities from beginning to
end. Whether you attended one or more, then you
know our staff provided a beautiful setting for us to
celebrate this special month.
Noteworthy of course was the Ladies Holiday Luncheon organized by our
Vice President, Deborah Deutsch. From the decorations to the food, it was
an exceptionally lovely event which was attended by 162 ladies and guests
who enjoyed shopping in the various boutiques, and the entertainment, too.
The Holiday Member/Guest Tournament was a fun filled day with 116 ladies
participating, many whom were dressed in holiday fashion. There were
even many who decorated their carts, one observed as having actual
Christmas lights! Beautiful weather, decorations on the course, a fantastic
lunch, numerous prizes, including a tee prize of a gift card to Trader Joe’s,
made the event truly special.

The New Year promises to bring exciting new events, as well as the
traditional ones for our ladies club. We are so fortunate to have such a
strong ladies club with members who never fail to step up to the plate to
volunteer their time to keep us all enjoying the game of golf.
Whether it is a good day out on the course, or not so good, we are so
privileged to be playing here at RHCC. Sometimes the “not so good” days are
due to trying to figure out the confounded rules of this game. Did you know
that there are 582 pages in the book: Decisions on the Rules of Golf? To
make matters more complicated, every two years the Royal and Ancient Golf
Club of St. Andrews and the USGA review the rules and make changes. The
last two years alone there were 179 changes!
Keeping up with all this is Lois Whitener who has served as our Rules Chairwoman for nine years and is the go to person when we need a ruling. A
fitting role for her, as she taught school for L.A. Unified schools for 35 years,
the last ten serving as the in-house dean. Handling rule disputes between
players and discerning the interpretation of a particular rule is right up her
alley with her professional background.
Lois has served our ladies club in other capacities as well including chairing
many tournaments over the years since she and her husband Wendell joined
RHCC in 1970. Monthly, she prints up some of the most common rules
questions she gets and posts them on the bulletin board in the locker room.
She also arranges for a WSCGA representative to come annually to one of
our mixer luncheons to provide an up to date lecture on all the rules. Thank
you, Lois for keeping us straight throughout the years!

RHCC 2013 Wine Program
A series of sold out fabulous wine events in 2012 have inspired us to step up our wine program to an even higher
level in 2013. Be sure to save the dates and check your e-mailer and newsletter for all of the wine events planned
for the New Year, from novice to expert; RHCC offers an event for everyone. Cheers!
In 2013, we will have three Winemaker Dinners. We kick off the year on Friday, January 25 with Steve Beckman of Beckman Vineyards
from Santa Barbara County. In the spring, Steven Zotovich of Zotovich Cellars will be here to showcase his wines. Back by popular
demand again in 2013 will be our lavish Seventeenth Tee Dinner. Then we will wrap up the year with one final wine dinner that is yet
to be decided.
Fridays nights are your chance to taste new wines from the menu, meet other members who enjoy wine and bring a bottle to share. We
will set-up our wine bar on the patio and provide a few different wines for you to try from a particular varietal or region in the world.
We encourage you to bring a bottle to add to the tasting. It’s a great way to try something new and get a conversation started. We have a
family style dining table set up as well to enjoy dinner with new friends.
Master Sommelier, Peter Neptune is back in 2013. After two sold out events, we have locked in some dates for more of these presentations. Mark your calendars for February 20th when we will explore the Rhone Valley and Southern France. Peter Neptune will also be
back in the fall for a presentation on South American wines.
No need to make a trip up to the wine country this year, as your staff will bring the wineries directly to you! Rolling Hills Country
Club will have its second annual Spring Wine Tasting in 2013. Last year, we had over 60 different wines to try. This is your opportunity
to sample a variety of different wines and purchase them at discounted prices as well.
Then, get ready for the holidays at our Holiday Wine Tasting at our Pro Shop Open House on Friday, December 6, 2013. Get all of your
holiday shopping done in one evening. Wine is the perfect hostess gift! This is your opportunity to sample and purchase a selection of
wines. We will also clean out our Wine Cellar and offer discontinued wines to you at significant discounts.
Leave the details to us, while we provide all the amenities necessary for a full day of wine tasting in Santa Barbara! Relax as you sip on
Santa Barbara County’s finest wines and enjoy an exquisite outdoor picnic prepared by our very own Chef. We have planned everything
including transportation and meals as well as arranged some very special surprises at some of our favorite wineries.
Every Wednesday we will have a different wine special, a few of which are:
1/2 off wine list, Special By-The-Glass, Free corkage, Complimentary wine sample of new wines, Wine tastings and Special wine pairings.
For more information on any of these events, please call Kellie Davenport-310-326-4343, or email [email protected].

Tennis Matters
by Mark Thomas
A couple of additions have been added to the RHCC tennis courts to make your
tennis practice more enjoyable and productive. Two new ball tubes have been
purchased to help you in picking up practice balls and can also be used to hold
balls for quick access. In addition a new Rol-Dri is available to dry the courts
after it rains. The Rol-Dri can eliminate puddles on the courts which will allow faster evaporation.
Depending on the temperature and wind speed you should be able to play in a short time.
When it’s time to take a break, check out the new patio table and chairs located next to the water
fountain and bathroom. If you can think of anything else that will make your game more enjoyable
please contact the Tennis Shop.
January is also a time for resolutions so I’ve come up with a few New Year’s resolutions for tennis
players.
1. Serve at least one bucket of balls each week. Forget about power and work on your placement and
spin serves. If you can develop an effective serve, your game will immediately jump a level.
2. Invite a weaker player to play with you. When you’re on the court with them work on your control.
Practice hitting the ball right at them so they can hit it back or hit to their stronger side so they can hit
a strong shot back.
3. Bring a new player into the game. 60% of American adults don’t get the recommended amount of
physical activity, and 25% of adults are not active at all. If you know someone in this category, commit
yourself to getting a racquet in their hands and introduce them to what has given you joy.
Have a great year, play lots of tennis and I’ll see you on the courts.
