VISITOR’S GUIDE - 2015
PARC NATIONAL DES
HAUTES-GORGESDE-LA-RIVIÈRE-MALBAIE
Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie features
landscapes worthy of the forces of nature that gave it its shape
and the people who have come at different times. We can find an
impressive variety of landscapes: hanging valleys alongside glacial
formations, white waters succeeding to still waters and falls and
cascades tumbling down the rocky walls. Steep slopes, beautiful
surroundings, and the unusual course of Malbaie River make this
an exceptional site. Discover the valley by riverboat, canoeing,
kayaking, rabaska canoeing, cycling or hiking.
NEW
FÉLIX-ANTOINE-SAVARD
DISCOVERY AND VISITORS CENTRE
The park entrance has been reconfigured to facilitate
access to all our customers. Campers will now be
able to purchase wood, ice and other convenience
store products at the Nature Boutique shop to make
their stay more enjoyable, and this upon their arrival.

LES RAPIDES TRAIL
A new trail that connects Le Cran campground to
Le Draveur Visitors Centre through Le Pin-Blanc
campground. The trail runs alongside Malbaie River,
and in many places, you will be able to feel the
trembling from the rapids where it takes its name.
DES ÉRABLES DAM
The old Des Érables dam is just a memory. For
the latter to remain alive, historical elements are
presented on the site. The bridge over the river
allows hikers to close the loop by following Le
Riverain and Les Rapides trails that run on both
sides of the river.

PLAY IT SAFE
YOUR SAFETY:
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
Outdoor activities may entail certain risks. You
must always make sure that you have the
ability and special skills required for your
chosen activity. It is very important to know
your physical ability and limits.
For several years now, Sépaq has ensured the
greatest possible access to Québec’s most beautiful
natural treasures. An essential part of this mission
is our concern for visitor safety.
Sépaq hopes that your outdoor experience
will be memorable and urges you to Play it
Safe!
All visitors remain responsible for their own safety,
with risk management being an integral part of the
outdoor experience. Preparing yourself adequately
is the first step in the safe and enjoyable practice of
your favourite activities.
We invite you to consult our safety guides for Sépaq
activities on our Web site sepaq.com/security.
The costs and expenses incurred in
conducting search and rescue operations are
the responsibility of the beneficiary. You can
obtain protection against these risks from an
insurer.

REGULATIONS
MUST-DOS
TO SEE AND DO
To contribute to improving the quality of
the national park experience, an entry
fee was established by the government.
You must always carry your receipt or
your annual card during your visit.
RIVERBOAT
Guided by the captain and a park warden, climb on
board the riverboat Le Menaud. This discovery cruise
will allow you to discover spectacular scenery, its
history and its wildlife.
To preserve the natural riches for future
generations, it is prohibited to remove
natural elements (animals, plants, dead
wood, rocks, etc.).
Also, the flora is sensitive to being
trampled. It is therefore mandatory to
stay on the hiking trails.
L’ACROPOLE-DES-DRAVEURS TRAIL
Overlooking the valley at a peak of 1048 metres
in altitude, discovery of the plateaus is done by
following the famous Acropole-des-Draveurs trail.
The effort of climbing is rewarded with the
breathtaking views of the mountains to the horizon
where the vastness of the landscape contrasts with
the fragility of the ecosystems.
Nature exhibits exemplary equilibrium,
and for this reason the feeding of
wildlife is prohibited. In this respect, it is
also prohibited to leave food or garbage
unsupervised. Keep them in your car.
Domestic animals are prohibited in
Québec’s national parks. But guide
dogs and service dogs accompanied
by their foster families are admitted.
However, these dogs must be easily
identifiable, wearing the Mira scarf or
harness. Those in charge of the animal
must carry the foundation’s letter of
accreditation.
FISHING ON MALBAIE RIVER
The ideal place to learn about fishing with family
or friends, wading or by boat. Come discover the
huge potential of Malbaie River. Brook trout and
unforgettable sensations await you.
It’s great to enjoy an authentic natural
environment that is clean and healthy!
Carry out your garbage, leave it in the
containers provided, and take home any
harmful substances, such as soap, oil,
combustibles or pesticides.
LA GRANDE AVENTURE
In a spirit of friendship, go back in time and go up
Malbaie River in a large rabaska canoe! You will
discover the history of the valley as well as the men
who explored it. A surprise awaits your taste buds!

A TEN-YEAR ASSESSMENT
OUR NATIONAL PARKS ARE IN GOOD HEALTH!
The daily challenge for the managers who run a national park is to get the balance right
between public access and conservation. To accomplish this, Parcs Québec developed
a forward-thinking program in 2003 to implement ongoing health check-ups for its
national parks – the ecological integrity monitoring program (EIMP). The results of the
370 monitorings carried out over the last 10 years are encouraging: the overall level of
ecological integrity of the national parks has been maintained or improved throughout the
network, despite an increasing public access.

A few highlights about parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie:
• The diversity of invertebrates that inhabit the bottom of rivers is an indicator of the
stream health status. For 3 years, the park team has followed the state of the benthic
fauna of two tributaries of Malbaie River. The results show an increase in the number of
individuals and their diversity.
• Monitoring the American Marten helps document the presence of the species in 12
stations throughout the park. This small mammal is an indicator species meaning that it
is sensitive to the modifications made to its habitat. Analysis of the results suggests a
rather stable trend of its presence, with a slight downward fluctuation since 2011.
• Monitoring of breeding birds is carried out by following a road punctuated by 21 listening
stations. The monitoring is carried out during the nesting period, a time when the birds
are most active. The year 2013 allowed us to identify species rarely or never heard in the
park, including the pileated woodpecker and the blackpoll warbler.

PARCS QUÉBEC FUND
GIVE… AND NATURE WILL GIVE BACK
The Parcs Québec Fund is dedicated exclusively to supporting conservation projects in
national parks. Arial census of white-tailed deer, shoreline restoration, archeological
studies, and bald eagle population monitoring are just a few examples of projects that help
safeguard our heritage and were made possible thanks to public donations.

A NEW LOOK ON
MALBAIE RIVER
Des Érables dam has a new look. Visitors of summer
2015 will be the first ones to cross the brand new
bridge over the Malbaie River. To ensure the safety
of the public, the old dam had to be replaced by
a spillway crest to maintain the water level in its
current state. During its construction, river water
was lowered and by doing so revealing the last
remnants of the log drive on this river.
Log driving activities began in the early 20th century
and ended in 1987. It was then agreed that the
log drive had adverse effects on the river. Among
the devastating effects, there were a significant
erosion of the banks caused by the logs and the
pollution caused by a significant contribution of
organic matters at the bottom of the rivers. In 1987,
the river had serious health problems. Several fish
species, such as salmon, deserted the river.
By abandoning the log drive and protecting the
environment through the creation of the national
park in 2000, the river looks better today. Brook
trout is back and the salmon has been successfully
reintroduced downstream of the dam. You can
also catch these species in the park! To continue
the restoration efforts of the Malbaie River, the
park’s team is planning to manually remove the
logs accumulated in the areas of Eaux-Mortes and
L’Équerre. To be continued.
In 1996, heavy rains have helped draining the
Malbaie River, cleaning that still occurs a little
every year with the spring floods. It is clear that
there is still a lot of work to do.
The Sépaq network has many must-see nature destinations you can explore as a family. Perfect for creating
lifelong memories together, seeing the world through a child’s eyes, or soaking up the wonder…
and reconnecting with what really matters.
