FEBRERO 24, 2013
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
OF YOU MY HEART HAS SPOKEN: SEEK HIS FACE. IT IS YOUR
FACE, O LORD, THAT I SEEK; HIDE NOT YOUR FACE FROM ME.
PSALM 27:8-9
Abram’s faith is sealed with a covenant initiated by God (1), our light and
our salvation (Ps). The transfiguration of Jesus (3) prefigures the transformation in glory to which we are called by our sharing in the paschal mystery the dying and rising of Jesus (2).
FIRST READING — GENESIS 15:5– 12
The Lord made a covenant with Abram.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM — PSALM 27
The Lord is my light and my salvation.
SECOND READING — PHILIPPIANS 3:17
Our citizenship is in heaven.
GOSPEL — LUKE 9:28
Atop a mountain,
Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John.
PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of the mother of Margaret Howell,
Veronica O’Brien, who passed into eternal life on February 16, 2013.
T REASURE
S
T
FROM OUR RADITIONS
By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is simply too alluring, or a furtive
puff on a cigarette irresistible. There is meaning even in the failure,
though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the
power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey.
We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to “give something
up” for Lent is an age‑old impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and
message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as
long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are
clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire
to give up are worth rooting out completely anyway.
What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ’s embrace of us in love: “What are you
James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
taking on for Easter?”
O GOD,
who have commanded us to listen to your beloved son, be
pleased, we pray, to nourish us inwardly by your word, that, with spiritual
sight made pure, we may rejoice to behold your glory. Through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
TRUST
“In God We Trust” marks the
currency of our nation. It should
mark our lives as well. In fact,
however, we hesitate to trust
others, including God, absolutely. We prefer to hold our
trust in reserve, fearful of being
hurt or betrayed. Today’s readings remind us that Lent is a
season of trust—a trust that
transforms.
God makes a remarkable
promise to Abraham. To receive
this promise, all Abraham need
do is trust. Paul tells the Philippians that they too must trust that
they are the beneficiaries of
God’s bountiful grace; that they
are not citizens of any earthly
kingdom, but citizens of heaven.
These two readings invite us to
hear the Gospel account of
deep trust—trust that God will
fulfill all promises and that Jesus’ passage will lead to transformation and new life.

CRS RICE BOWL
Second Week of Lent
Improving Health in East Timor
CRS Rice Bowl invites us to learn about
East Timor this week, where tuberculosis
is a major health crisis. CRS works in
communities where access to medical
care is limited. This week, we pray for
families in East Timor and give to CRS
Rice Bowl to help people who are struggling with illness.
Read in your Lenten Calendar about Ana Correia, who because of CRS training, is able to provide information about
preventing and treating TB. CRS’ health programs in East
Timor are aimed at fighting tuberculosis, which is a major
health crisis among the world’s poorest and most vulnerable
populations.
This week, pray the Our Father and donate your pocket
change to your CRS Rice Bowl to support CRS’ health programs worldwide.
Members of the Social Justice Commission will distribute the
2013 Rice Bowls with the attached Lenten Calendars after all
Masses this weekend.
LENT 2013
The “Lent 2013” feature on the Diocese of Little Rock website
offers hundreds of helpful links to meatless recipes, prayers,
Bible studies, retreats, meditations and more. New this year is
a feature on the Stations of the Cross. It explains the origins
of the devotion and follows Arkansas pilgrims who walked in
the footsteps of Christ in the ancient city of Jerusalem. These
resources offer a variety of options beyond giving up your
favorite food. Visit this page today and share it with your
friends: www.dolr.org/lent/resources.php.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Please remember that our inclement weather policy follows
the Fayetteville Public School system. If Fayetteville Schools
are closed, St. Joseph Church and School are closed. When
we close we cancel school, daily Mass, and all parish meetings, daytime and evening. In addition both Parish and
School offices close.
If it is Sunday or Fayetteville Schools are not closed and the
weather or road conditions are bad, everyone should use his
or her own best judgment to decide whether it is safe to drive
to St. Joseph.

Congratulations to the girls 6th and 7th grade St. Joseph Catholic School basketball team for winning the
AAO championship on Sunday!

to develop great athletes. The girls will be introduced

Have you considered a Catholic education for your
PreK 3 through 7th grade children? St. Joseph offers all
the academic subjects that public school students
have, as well as phys. ed., music, technology, art, library and Spanish. Middle school students also have
Latin! What is most important is that they also have
religion as part of the regular curriculum. Students
have Mass two days a week, morning prayer all together three days a week, religion instruction, and
morals and values reinforced throughout the curriculum.
St. Joseph Catholic School began registration two
weeks ago for current families and newly entering
Catholic families. Registration for all interested families
(including non-Catholics) begins on Monday, February
11, and names are taken on a first-come, first-served
basis until classes are full. If you have a PreK child, a
Kindergartener not currently in our PreK program, or
you are looking to register your children who are currently in other schools in the area, please give us a call
at 442-4554 to schedule a tour and have questions
answered. We look forward to hearing from you!

Arkansas, Medicaid and the Common Good
By Bishop Anthony B. Taylor
Diocese of Little Rock
January 31, 2013
The central teaching of Catholic social doctrine is the sanctity and dignity of the human
person. This pro-life tradition means more than just opposing the intentional
destruction of life before birth, it calls for affirming life at all times and at every stage.
Referred to as the Catholic Consistent Life Ethic, the Church’s concern extends beyond
its members to the common good of all people. Thus, the Catholic Church seeks access
to decent housing, a just wage, educational opportunity and essential health care for all
in society. The working poor in Arkansas are a particular concern at this time. Their
need for adequate health care within their means is why I support and encourage the
89th General Assembly to expand access to Medicaid in Arkansas.
There are many legitimate interests competing for limited resources to fund state
services in Arkansas. Our leaders must often establish priorities based on
considerations they do not control. Yet, respecting life and its inherent dignity should
always be guiding principles in legislative decisions. The Rand Corp recently published
a report projecting that 2,300 lives would be saved in Arkansas annually if Medicaid is
expanded to 250,000 additional citizens. Certainly, pain and suffering would also be
alleviated. People who now appear in the hospital emergency room with advanced
conditions would have the coverage necessary to access timely, primary health care to
address conditions when they are easier and less expensive to treat.
Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that under the Affordable Care Act states
have the option to expand Medicaid coverage to people who do not qualify for the
program at present and who are unable to afford private coverage or participate in the
state’s health insurance exchange. Since that time, the federal government has offered
to fund the full cost of this expansion in Arkansas for a period of three years.
Additionally Arkansans will not have to pay for more than 10 percent of the costs of the
expansion in the future. The savings and revenue to local hospitals, jobs created and
income and sales taxes generated by the infusion of funds will offset all or most of that
cost. Legitimate concerns certainly do exist about the federal debt but denying a quarter
million of our people access to health care will not improve that debt.
Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families reports that Medicaid expansion could
give coverage to nearly 250,000 Arkansans who are presently uninsured. Medicaid
coverage would provide basic health care; people would be able to see a doctor before
health issues spin out of control. Preventive care and early diagnosis would mean fewer
emergency room visits and health care costs would be lowered for everyone. This would
truly benefit the common good.
It helps to put some real life statistics behind the 250,000 and realize most are hardworking, but low-paid adults doing things to help many of us. According to a recent
chart in Arkansas Business, there are 314,000 people in Arkansas working for wages
between $7.50 and $9.99 per hour. Many of these hardworking people are either selfemployed or work for small businesses that do not offer insurance. The Medicaid
expansion will help many of these people get the coverage they need to stay healthier
and better able to support their families. The irony is, whether or not the state expands
Medicaid, those above the poverty line will obtain subsidized insurance coverage within
the Insurance Exchange. Those below the poverty level -- many of those low-wage but
hard-working people -- will not qualify for any health coverage without the Medicaid
expansion as they are not eligible to participate in the exchange.
Experts estimate that Medicaid expansion will save the state money, while at the same
time stimulating the state’s economy. According to the University of Arkansas Sam M.
Walton College of Business, every dollar the state spends on Medicaid results in a sixfold increase in spending through the local economy. In 2009 alone, Medicaid spending
in Arkansas created 70,277 jobs. Medicaid expansion is expected to create many more
new jobs.
While Medicaid expansion will benefit the Arkansas economy, Catholic support is not
based on dollars and cents. We know that the role of government is to foster the
common good. This includes making sure that everyone has ready access to the things
needed to lead a truly human life with dignity. Pope Benedict XVI teaches that health is
a “precious asset” to society that government should protect by “dedicating the
equipment, resources and energy so that the greatest number of people can have
access.”
For 100 years, America’s Catholic bishops have been a voice calling for universal health
care as necessary for life and human dignity, especially for the poor and immigrants. All
people need affordable, quality health care, without regard to where or whether they
work, how much they earn or where they live. No human being is expendable. A just
and moral health care policy reflects this truth and promotes preventive care and early
treatment for all. It is wasteful and an injustice to us all for the working poor to have to
resort to health care through a costly trip to the hospital emergency room.
The legacy of the 89th General Assembly can be its courageous concern for the common
good by expanding Medicaid to cover 250,000 uninsured Arkansans. Taking this step
will produce moral, social and economic benefits for our state and affirm that Arkansas
respects the dignity and God-given worth of all who make their home here.

"Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, Juan y Santiago y subió al
monte a orar.
