PAPER FROM FUNGI

Identify mushrooms and fungi usable for papermaking. Preparing materials with basic
equipment, coloring with natural dyes, and learning techniques for making paper with
fungi will lead to a class where most of the time will be devoted to producing paper. Paper
made from fungi produces richly colored and textured sheets for collage, 3D, masks,
books, paintings, and mixed media.

MAGIC WALLET BOXES

Learn to make a magical box structure that opens from both the left and the right to
reveal hidden compartments that conceal surprises. Choose from the wide assortment
of papers provided to cover your box, or bring your own favorites. Subtle or bold, magic
wallet boxes are fun to make, and more fun to give.

ARTICULATED PAPER POWER DOLL

Construct a mixed media modeling board “pantin” or marionette with moveable arms
and legs that will bring to consciousness powerful, positive aspects of our personalities.
We will adorn our paper friend with decorative bits and bobs that we have been hoarding and make a matchbox reliquary to house a special stone or charm and a meaningful
quote.

CREATING A HANGING BOOK

Take a flat image (drawing, photo, collage, watercolor) and turn it into a book that when
opened can hang on the wall. Learn basic book-making techniques while making a prototype with self contained instructions that will help you create future books. Start with
a 10”w x 7.5”h image and end with a beautifully finished 2”w x 3.5”h book that unfolds
into a hanging piece of art. If time allows, make a simple slip case to protect your treasure.

MAKING PHOTO AND MEMORY BOOKS

Make 5 different structures to hold, display and share your photos. The structures include
a tri-fold series of 3 covered book board frames with ribbon closure, an accordion fold-out
book of wallet-sized photos with a hard cover, an accordion folded book of frames with
ribbon closure, an accordion fold with rotating photo panels nestled in a folded pocket
and a single section album with envelope cover.

Paper, fiber, wire, bamboo and Angelina fibers are just some of the materials we will
manipulate as we cut, fold, glue, print, roll, wire, and collage our way to create one-of-akind focal beads to use in mixed media, earrings or a bracelet. Here is a class to use your
favorite small bits of special papers!!

DRESSING UP NAKED PAPER: SURFACE DESIGN POTPOURRI

Try new techniques for fabulous textured and colored papers. Explore crackle surface,
sprinkle papers, glass plate sandwich prints, wood glue resists, texture hammering, pastel
stenciling, and nail varnish marbling. Experiment with combining and layering to make
papers that are deeply textured and multi-colored. Make a set of coasters and a picture
mat using your favorite discovery!

SHIFU AND SILK

Practice shifu – the Japanese art of paper yarn weaving – and expand your silk painting
skills as you create a wall hanging plus a length of fabric for a future paper arts project.
Paint designs on your silk warp using non-toxic dyes, then weave with hand-spun Kozo
paper yarn. Learn techniques for creating your own unique paper yarns. No previous
weaving experience is necessary, and all weaving equipment (including looms pre-warped
with silk yarn) will be provided.

THE AMAZING DREMEL: SOFT MATERIALS

Expand your creative skills! Learn to use the Dremel tool on soft materials. Drill, cut,
carve, etch, shape, polish, and grind soft craft and non-traditional book making elements.
Materials will include 4”x4” pieces of Plexiglas, polymer clay, wood, and linoleum. Using
the 228 piece bit kit (included in materials fee), practice various effects and techniques.
Make a book at the end of class to hold all your samples. Take the class on Sunday to
work with different bits and hard materials.

LITTLE CARVED AND BEADED JOURNALS

Transform book board and paper to create this wonderful book. Paper is richly colored
with acrylic paints using creative techniques. Covers are formed of carved boards, the design enhanced with lush metallic paints. Embellished with beads, this book has a Coptic
binding stitched with colorful waxed linen thread that allows this small volume to open flat.

INTRODUCTION TO TWILL WEAVE AND KAKISHIBU

Dye two sheets of watercolor paper with kakishibu (Japanese fermented persimmon)
producing tan, brown and black bark-like textured paper. Learn to read a graph and weave
twill patterns with ¼” strips of pre-dyed/pre-cut paper. Create a series of 4”x5” twill weave
samples. Twine edges with waxed linen to bind the borders. Add these woven elements to
your collages, cards, journals.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN BOX

Lift the lid of this enchanting box to discover how it dynamically unfolds to a series of
tiered boxes, creating a stairway of smaller boxes for your precious goods. Turn the box
over to create a tier of platforms for displaying miniatures. The smaller boxes interface to
fold into the larger box. You will keep opening and closing this box with delight!

DECONSTRUCTED SILKSCREEN

Create amazing surface designs on a variety of papers from thick watercolor paper to the
lightest tissue using thickened fiber reactive dyes. We call this “texture screening” because
we place resists such as leaves, textured fabric, or doilies underneath the screen. Learn wet
and dry techniques including painting directly on screens and drawing with fine tipped
nibs. Create papers for bookmaking, box making, collage and quilting.

SECRET BELGIAN BINDING

Skill Level: All Levels
Construct a beautiful historic binding with exposed stitching that opens flat, perfect for
journals, sketchbooks or albums. You will learn to fold paper correctly, cover boards with
your choice of beautiful papers with perfect clean corners, and create an inlaid cover
unique to your book. Basic bookbinding skills are helpful, but not required.

BEYOND THE FOLD
Dolores Guffey

Explore accordion, meander and explosion folds, sometimes called Wow Folds or the
Turkish Map Fold. Each of these folds will be made into prototype books by various
means, allowing participants to create as many structures as possible without taking class
time to decorate or embellish. Full instructions accompany these structures so participants
can recreate them at will.

BROWN BAG IT, BABY!!

Create magic with simple brown bags in this playful workshop. Through the alchemy of
paint, text and imagery, bags are transformed with metallic hues, enhanced with re-purposed encyclopedia pages and images into decorative pages that unfold to reveal pockets.
Embellished covers are added to give substance. The no-sew accordion spine opens up to
reveal a hidden area, perfect for words, sayings or images.

SILK AND PLANT FIBER PAPER MAKING & A BEADED PAPER CUFF

Make fusion papers with an assortment of colorful, luscious spinning fibers, including silk, hemp, flax, and cotton. Fused fibers can be cut into strips and woven, cut into
shapes, and sewn into vessels, book covers, bowls and more. Finally, use some of the fibers
to make a flexible bracelet cuff with beads.

April 6 — 29 in the Upstairs Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center
Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 12noon to 4pm
CHERI ALDRICH is a full time artist currently dividing her time between mixed
media, basketry and jewelry. Themes of nature thread through her work and a love of
rich textures has led her to mixed media. Represented by six galleries and stores, she
has been featured in Somerset Studio, Oregon Coast Magazine and on The Carol Duvall
Show. Known for her whimsical style, DORIS ARNDT has shared her love of book
binding, jewelry making and working with other media for over 15 years by teaching
workshops and exhibiting throughout the country. Her non-traditional approach and
innovative bindings have been seen in The Studio, Somerset Studio, The Rubber Stamper,
Rubberstampmadness, in several books, and on The Carol Duvall Show. KATE BOYES
is a teaching artist/weaver who has presented workshops in university, public school,
and community settings for over 20 years. She believes in the healing power of creative expression. JILL CARDINAL is an alternately educated artist working in diverse
media and has a special fondness for simple processes that involve paper. She teaches
at her studio, “One Small Bird,” and at Oregon Art Supply in Eugene, OR. Jill believes everyone has the right and ability to create beauty and meaning in their creative
work. DONNA SAKAMOTO CRISPIN has been creating baskets and teaching
workshops since the mid ‘80s. She likes to explore fiber arts, and makes woven figures, sculptures, wall pieces, and more. DOLORES GUFFEY is a founding and avid
member of the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild. She has been actively involved
with book arts since 1995 and has taught numerous workshops for NORBAG and
other guilds in CA and OR, the Newport Paper Arts Festival, and the Focus on Book
Arts Conference. NANCY HOLLEY AND CYNTHIA GRIFFIN are always searching for amazing and unusual projects to create and have reveled in many joyful days of
creativity together. Nancy, a print maker, watercolorist and art process enthusiast has
been a bookmaker for 15 years, winning “Best of Show” at the FOBAR 2009 student
show. Cynthia, a graphic artist for 18 years and a 20-year member of the Rogue Valley
Calligrapher’s Guild, has a passion for ink, paper, calligraphy, bookbinding and 3D
art. AMANDA PUETZ has been exploring book arts and bookbinding since 2002.
She is an active member in the Emerald Book Arts Group, leading workshops and
sharing a passion for book arts. She also leads bookmaking workshops for teens and
adults at the Eugene Public Library. CINDY SHAW recently returned from Phuket,
Thailand where she taught deconstructed silkscreen for ten years. Her main focus is
on book arts. She creates wall hangings, stretched art pieces and collaged work with
her own printed papers and fabrics. MOE SNYDER is a 2007 graduate of Oregon
College of Art and Craft in Portland with a BFA in Book Arts and Drawing. She is a
member of For ArtSake Gallery in Nye Beach in Newport, OR. DAVID SUMERLIN
has been a mushroom cultivator and enthusiast for 30 years and is involved in all aspects of mycotechnology. JILL TIMM is a full time, award winning book artist focusing on small editions of hand crafted books that portray the spirit of aesthetics of the
natural environment. With a varied background in graphic design, photography, and
teaching, she has work in many corporate, university, public and private collections
worldwide and is the publisher of Artist Book News. JACKIE WYGANT loves teaching
others the things that intrigue her. Working with marbling, paste papers and surface design, she does book crafts and sculptural artist’s books using her own decorative papers.

REFUND POLICY: The Newport Paper Arts Festival is usually oversubscribed, and we often have a waiting list. If you cannot attend
a workshop for which you have reserved a space, let us know immediately. We will refund your tuition minus a $35.00 processing fee.
