PRESIDENT
Our Spring Open House April
6th and 7th went very well. Saturday Darwin Doll and George Nye
led our drag racing friends in
Roundtable and to show off all
the new drag cars in the Museum. Sunday Dave Hare hosted
dedications and we introduced
our new exhibits and displays.
Lynn Paxton
Dr. Dick Berggren did a great
President,
tribute to Chris Economaki. It
EMMR
was nice to see Corrine Economaki. Also our tribute to Dick Snare went well. I was
glad to see his family and all his rivals tell stories.
Karen Miller and all our friends at YCRC were on
hand to tell about our tribute to Paul Miller and the
York County Racing Club.
New displays this year are: Susquehanna Speedway
display case, Sports Car display, Special Motocross
display, and our Pine Box Derby Track for young and
old to enjoy.
After working all winter in the Museum, our volunteers moved down to the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds to get ready for our May events. Starting
with the Gary Wolford Fish Fry May 5th, then on May
18th Larry & Kim Garland brought the Jalopy Showdown in for a great weekend. June 8th is the Antique
Car Show & Flea Market hosted by our friends at the
Gettysburg Region AACA. Don’t miss our 29th Annual Latimore Valley Fair on June 21st–23rd. Also
stop out for a new show: V-Dub Bash that will be at
the Fairgrounds on July 27th.
Our great volunteers have worked so hard I wish I
could thank them all in person. If you like race cars,
please volunteer once a month for 6 hours. I think
you would have a fun time at the Museum. Hope to
see you soon!

CORNER
CRAIG’s
Do you hear the buzz? I’m
speaking of the buzz of excitement that surrounds the EastCraig Agan
ern Museum of Motor Racing
Development,
EMMR
and the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds! Yes, there is a new
air of excitement and the fun-o-meter is rising rapidly at the Eastern Museum!
I wasn’t able to be at the Silver Springs
Reunion and the Gary Wolford Fish Fry on May 5 but
it sounds like it was another fun time for everyone involved. Lynn Paxton told me there were thrills and
spills and even some bumping of the pace truck, but
that it was all in good fun and no one was hurt! The
driver lineup was another all-star group including
Billy Pauch, Billy Pauch Jr., Fred Rahmer, Al Arrisher, Steve Siegel, Jimmy Siegel, Johnny Mackison,
Jr., and Hunter Mackison. A big thank you goes out to
Alan Kreitzer and the Kreitzer Family, Gary Wolford
and all of his helpers, Donald Bricker for bringing his
french fry and concession trailers, and as always, to
the EMMR Board and volunteers who do such a great
job making the fairgrounds beautiful and putting in all
of the work to make these events happen.
My last visit to the EMMR was the Spring Open
House and like many others, I had a great time! If you
haven’t been to the museum yet this spring, you really
need to stop by. The board and volunteers have again
done a fantastic job of creating new displays within all
four areas of the EMMR. The gift shop is fresh with
new clothing and books and the feel is open and airy
with the new entry doors and checkout counter.
The drag racing display area is fantastic with a complete turnover featuring new display cars. A new dirt
bike display honors many decades of dirt riding and
shows the historic progression of off-road motorcycles.
A unique AMC Javelin road race car kicks off our new
sports car racing area with more additions to be added
soon. The new sound system in the Phase IV addition
installed by the board was a tremendous upgrade for all
of our speakers including mc’s, special guests, and
round table participants during our events.
The Saturday portion of the Spring Open House
was headlined by Darwin Doll and his many drag racing supporters and volunteers. They had a great
crowd who turned out to see and listen to the many
special guests who had been brought in. After a fun
time of interviews and stories the group moved outside to fire up some of the vintage drag race cars for
“cackling thunder.” WOW what a sweet sound!
Special guest Dr. Dick Berggren arrived Saturday
afternoon. He would have liked to have visited several
2
area speedways but his schedule did not allow him to
come in until Saturday so a visit to Lincoln Speedway
was arranged. Berggren spent much of his time prerace in the pit area visiting old friends and making
new ones. After that it was up to the tower to visit
with announcer Wayne Harper and watch the exciting
competition. Dr. Dick was thrilled when his old friend
Fred Rahmer won the feature that night and enjoyed
going to victory lane for many photo opportunities.
On Sunday we were honored to have both Berggren
and Corrinne Economaki on hand to help dedicate the
completion of the Chris Economaki Library. Dr.
Berggren is a former sprint car driver, college professor, Open Wheel Magazine editor, Speedway Illustrated publisher, and veteran lead pit reporter for
NASCAR Fox Sports. As a highly honored print and
broadcast journalist, he was enlightening and humble
as he spoke of the influence that Chris Economaki,
the “Dean of Motorsports Journalists” had on him
personally as his career developed. Corrinne spoke
very candidly of growing up and later working with
her famous father. Both Berggren and Economaki had
the crowd laughing as they spoke of the thrills they experienced while passengers riding with Chris Economaki and his aggressive driving style! Our spring open
house was a wonderful time for all!
Please remember the Eastern Museum of Motor
Racing at times of gift giving or planning. The classic
engraved blocks are available on either inside or outside walls at the EMMR, and will be a lasting tribute
to yourself, friends, or family. If you need more information or would like to talk about how you can make
a larger current or planned gift to the museum, call
me at 641-891-0445 or email [email protected].
Yes, there is a new buzz around the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing and the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds as we continue to expand the fun and
excitement going on here! Join us for all of the
scheduled events and invite your friends!

ONE BLOCK AT A TIME.
You can purchase an actual 8” x 16” building block.
Either: OUTSIDE on the Phase 4 Porch for $1,000 or INSIDE on the twostory Phase 3 Wall for $500 (plus $50 engraving each) and tell us how

Your tax deductible contribution for the building block is a meaningful

of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.
Also inside: Corporate / Business blocks are also available for $1,050,
including a framed wall display about who you are honoring with your
block for use in your place of business.
Due to the amount of dust generated and the general disruption, blocks will
only be engraved once a year between mid-December and the end of March
while EMMR is closed.

Recreation Area News
Spring is here and camping in the EMMR Members’ Recreation Area is picking up. Those with permanent sites are busy fixing them up with stone,
flowers, and storage sheds. It is the responsibility of
each site-holder to keep their area neat and orderly.
We have many members who work very hard maintaining the grounds and museum—please maintain
and decorate your site so that it is an asset to the
beautiful Latimore Valley Fairgrounds.
Some changes have been made to the regulations
governing the EMMR Members’ Recreation Area. Following are the up-dated rules that were approved by
the Board of Directors of the Eastern Museum of
Motor Racing as of August 28, 2012.
1. The EMMR Members’ Recreation Area of Latimore
Valley Fairgrounds is not a campground but a
recreation area for our members whose main interest is the museum and the up-keep of the property. Non-workers need not apply. The purpose of
the recreation area is not to provide cheap camping for the public.
2. Subletting of sites will not be allowed. The Recreation Area is not intented to house our member’s
homeless friends or family members.
3. Required hours of volunteering and fees for the
Members’ Recreation Area will increase for the
2014 season as follows:
• Mandatory minimum volunteer hours will increase from 8 to 16 hours yearly and must be
completed between Sept. and the convention in
August of the following year.
• To receive a free site, the requirement of a
minium of 80 volunteer hours will remain the
same for now.
• Permanent site fee will increase from $50 to
$100 yearly.
• Temporary site fee will increase from $30 to $50
yearly.
• For a regular EMMR Member to use a Temporary Site for a weekend—Friday thru Sunday—
the fee will be $20. At the present time they are
charged nothing. Approval is necessary before
occupying a site.
• Members are no longer allowed to occupy their
sites 24/7. They are allowed to stay for 2 weeks
and then must take a 1-week break and then are
allowed to return.

WE NEVER TURN DOWN FREE HELP!
Our members who camp at the fair have been
doing their service hours and more. The fair does run
much smoother and everyone gets a chance to enjoy
it if we all take a turn. Again this year we are looking
for volunteers to help out with various jobs throughout the fair on June 21, 22, and 23.
Please look at the list below and volunteer 1 or 2
hours a day for any of the following.
This year we will have a sign up chart so that you
can put down the hours you are interested in helping.

be on display at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.
Drag Car Exhibit News
It was a great Spring Open House and those attending the dedication of the new Memorial Case
were Susan Jenkins for her father Bill “Grumpy”
Jenkins. Wife Angie, Ken Jr., Gina and the Montgomery family for Ken Montgomery, Sr. and Brian
Wallace and the Wallace family for Ron Wallace.
Our attention is now focused on the cruise-in on
Sunday June 23rd at the Latimore Valley Fair. A special Cackling Thunder race car start-up will be held.
Howard “Junior” Kelly is preparing special awards
that will be presented to the “Top 3” participants
along with special participant plaques with the
Mickey Thompson Revelleader funny car to all participants. This event is a fun day for cruisers and drag
fans alike.
We will be distributing many of our fliers at
cruise-ins in our area and don’t miss our ad in the
May issue of Cruise News.
Also we are lining up the displays for the Matchbox
and Johnny Lightning displays for the month of September in the drag racing area. Entries are beginning
to come in for the Toy and Racing Memorabilia Show
on Sunday, September 15th. Our ad will be appearing
in Hemmings Motor News and we expect activity to
pick-up as we get closer to the show. A fun event for
the buying, selling, and trading of toys and racing
memorabilia.
Come out and join us and let the good times roll!

Summer just wouldn’t be summer without the annual Latimore Valley Fair… a true country festival
with antique car, race car, drag car, hot rod, and
muscle car exhibits. The Latimore Valley Gas &
Steam Association will be on hand with their wonderful display of tractors along with parades, pulls, and
other events. Bowling Green Speedway will be having
their 15 Annual Reunion this year.
Track time for the antique race car exhibition will
be on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Don’t forget there is no
track time on Sunday, but we hope you stay to show
your car to our visitors.
On Sunday we will be having a car show including
race cars, dragsters, classic cars, hot rods, etc. There
will be a band for the afternoon on the stage to entertain us. We will still have our fair events for all weekend, which include; games, good food, church
service, crafts, raffles, duck races, and flea markets.
WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOUR HELP!
The Latimore Valley Fairground committee and
our volunteers work very hard getting ready for the
fair. If you would like to help prepare for the fair, or if
