I will always be grateful to Rainbow Children’s Hospital for the care
they gave my son. In 1983 my son, Jeffrey, was born four weeks
early at Deaconess Hospital, but at 6 pounds and 13 ½ ounces he
was not really considered to be premature. The problem was that
he had aspirated fluid during birth, a condition called “wet lungs.”
He needed to be given medication intravenously. So a few hours
after his birth he was transported to Rainbow Children’s Hospital
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for what would be a ten day stay. I still
remember them bringing him in to say goodbye to me in a little
wheeled crib. It is not easy to be in the maternity ward with other
mothers holding their babies while yours is so far away! The nurses
at Rainbow Children’s Hospital were wonderful, I could call any time
day or night and they would give me an update on my son and
answer any questions that I had. He was born on a Thursday night
and by Sunday morning I was discharged and made Rainbow my
first stop before going home to my fourteen month old daughter.
We visited every day until he came home. The care he received
was great and I was given plenty of privacy and opportunities to
nurse my son during the hospital stay. I will always be grateful to
Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and have a special place in
my heart for the work they do and the care they give.

Diversification:
What it is and why it’s important in today’s world.
The goal of diversification is not to boost
performance—it won’t ensure gains or guarantee against losses. But once you choose to
target a level of risk based on your goals, time
horizon, and tolerance for volatility, diversification may provide the potential to improve returns for that level of risk.
To build a diversified portfolio, you should
look for assets—stocks, bonds, cash, or
others—whose returns haven’t historically
moved in the same direction, and, ideally,
assets whose returns typically move in
opposite directions. This way, even if a portion
of your portfolio is declining, the rest of your
portfolio, hopefully, is growing. Thus, you can
potentially offset some of the impact of poor
performance on your overall portfolio.
Another important aspect of building a
well-diversified portfolio is that you try to stay
diversified within each type of investment.
Within your individual stock holdings,
beware of overconcentration in a single stock.
For example, you may not want one stock to
make up more than 5% of your stock portfolio.
It’s also smart to diversify across stock
holdings by market capitalization (small,
mid, and large caps), sectors, and geography.
Again, not all caps, sectors, and regions have
prospered at the same time, or to the same
degree, so you may be able to reduce portfolio
risk by spreading your assets across different
parts of the stock market. You may want to
consider a mix of styles, too, such as growth
and value.
While our domestic markets have recently
suffered losses, losses in other geographic
regions, and in other sectors have fared far
worse. In 2015, the S&P 500, a broad measure
of the US market, was down .7%. The energy
component of the S&P 500 meanwhile was
down 21.1%, and markets in China and Brazil
were down 7.6% and 41.2% respectively.
Let’s look at two portfolios, both with the
same asset allocation, 100% invested in stock
mutual funds, but with different diversification. Portfolio A is concentrated in three different sectors, energy, materials, and technology,
while Portfolio B is more diversified, having
holdings in three broader categories--large
cap, mid cap and small cap companies.

Building a diversified portfolio can be
difficult and involve technical details which
may be beyond the reach of the average
investor. You may need to educate yourself
with things like alpha and beta.
Beta is a measure of the volatility, or
systematic risk, of a security or a portfolio in
comparison to the market as a whole. Beta
is used in the capital asset pricing model
(CAPM), a model that calculates the expected
return of an asset based on its beta and
expected market returns.
Alpha is a measure of performance on a
risk-adjusted basis. Alpha, often considered
the active return on an investment, gauges
the performance of an investment against a
market index used as a benchmark, since they
are often considered to represent the market’s
movement as a whole. The excess returns of
a fund relative to the return of a benchmark
index is the fund’s alpha.
