and Tractor Association to exhibit its antique
engines and machinery. The 4-H Clubs of
Santa Cruz County will be doing the 4-H
Fair and they will be serving lunch. And, for

Meet Brenda Messenger:
AHP’s Greeter at the Front Gate
If you have ever attended 2nd Saturday on the Farm, then you’ve
met Brenda, our “Greeter” at the front gate!
The first thing you’ll notice is she has a definite British accent
– because she moved from London, England in 1957 to Santa Barbara and then to Watsonville in 2003. She and husband, Bill, have
two daughters, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Brenda has worked for a jewelry artist and describes herself as a
“real jewelry fan,” and she has received first place in Santa Cruz
breeding and showing pedigreed cats.
Her life has been full of volunteer experiences, but she believes
the most important thing she has ever done is raise her children.
She began volunteering at AHP after coming to a talk by the
late Ron Tyler to potential AHP docents. She found the historical
information and exhibits very interesting and the AHP volunteers
fun to be with and decided this would be a nice place to volunteer.
So our attendees are lucky to be greeted every 2nd Saturday by
Brenda!

driving our draft horses. We would love to have
you share your memories of driving horses or
your first tractor. The Agricultural History Project
would like to capture some of the experiences that
people had in the past so those memories and that
knowledge can be kept for future generations to
enjoy and reflect on.
This event was created to help our community
realize that the Agricultural History Project is a
separate 501(c)(3) not- for- profit organization
located at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds and
not an exhibit for the Santa Cruz County Fair. The
Agricultural History Project is a tenant of the Santa
Cruz County Fairgrounds.

Get Involved as the Vision of a Living History Farm Takes Shape

The Living History Farm held its first
planning committee meeting on March24
with 16 people from the community in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was
to share ideas about the development of a
Living History Farm where people both
young and old can participate in the dayto-day activities of a working farm.
This is an exciting project, which will
ultimately educate, entertain and inform
visitors about the agricultural and cultural
history of the Pajaro Valley. Potential activities include educational programs for

Seeks Volunteer Coordinator

Members are always asking, how can I volunteer to help the Agricultural History Project (AHP) and one of the areas that we could
use help with is a Volunteer Coordinator. The position involves
creating a contact list of volunteers so that when we have a special

With the intent to start small, many ideas
discussed will be implemented and tested in
our Second Saturday Program until a master
development plan is created and funds are
raised for implementation of the Living
History Farm.
The committee plans to meet every
month (currently on the fourth Thursday of
the month). Anyone interested in participating is invited to attend. Please contact us and
we will put your name on the distribution
list for meeting agendas.

New Buck Rake is
Ready for Annual
Day on the Farm

Four buck rakes in various condition
have been donated to the the Agricultural History Project over the years.
Buck rakes were used to gather
dried loose hay, bunch it up and deliver
it to a hay press or a hay stacker in a hay
field. The hay is then put into shapes
designed to shed water and allow for
drying.
Buck rakes are still used today and
are put on tractors and trucks. All four
of the buck rakes donated to us were
pulled by horses, with one horse on
each side of the buck rake. John Kegebein and Tom Stickle recently completed the renovation of the Buck Rake. Parts from each of these four
donated rakes were used to make the
renovated buck rake that you can see at
Day on the Farm on May 14. So hitch
up your horse and buggy and trot on
over.
