PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Myron Moore
Kentucky Employee Credit Union
It is December 23rd as I write this message for the
Chamber of Commerce Newsletter. This will be my
last President’s message as my term ends on December 30th and your new Chamber President, Rene’ True,
will begin his year of service on January 1st. The year
has gone by quickly and I have been busy attending
many Chamber events such as ribbon cuttings, open house events, business
after hour’s gatherings, and other meetings of various types.
One of my favorite meetings this past year was a luncheon for Past Chamber
Presidents. There were fourteen (14) Past Presidents who attended. Their
terms ranged from the 1970’s up through 2012. It was very enlightening to
hear these former Chamber leaders talk about their year of service and describe what the Chamber was doing while they were serving. I learned many
facts about the Chamber and our community that I did not know and I
learned how many of our current Chamber activities and events came into
being. The main thing I was able to take from that luncheon was how fortunate our community is to have had such a fine group of men and women who
volunteered to take on leadership roles, not only with the Chamber but in
many other organizations in Frankfort and Franklin County.
Our Chamber of Commerce and our community as a whole has a strong
foundation that has been laid by those whom have gone before us. We continue to build on what our leaders from years past have put in place and we
reap the rewards from the work that others started. My year of service as
President has only strengthened my view of what a wonderful community we
have here in Frankfort and Franklin County. I could go into a lot of detail
about all that we have and why we have it but primarily it comes down to a
pretty simple statement. We have good people. Our people are honorable,
intelligent, loyal, and giving. Our good people create strong businesses. They
support the community and the less fortunate by giving of their time and resources to worthy causes. Our good people are always looking for ways to
have a positive impact on our community.
I have worked with so many good people this past year that I could never
mention them all but I would like to say “Thank You” to the 2013 Chamber
Board of Directors. You have been there to support me from start to finish.
I greatly appreciate your willingness to not only support me but to support the
mission of the Chamber of Commerce. I also must mention my special appreciation to the Chamber Staff: Carmen Inman, Suzy Hosley, and Carmen
Engle. There are not enough words to explain how much help I have received from them this year.
Thank you to all of our Chamber members. Your membership is part of the
strong foundation of our organization and our community. To the 70+ new
members who have joined in 2013. I thank you for your membership and I
encourage you to take an active role in the Chamber in 2014. Chamber membership can be a great asset to your business.
I look forward to serving as your Past President in 2014. I am still active
and available so feel free to contact me if I can ever be of assistance in any
way. My wish for each of you is for a happy and prosperous 2014.
All the best,

2014 PRESIDENT-ELECT MESSAGE
Rene True
ConnectKentucky
Frankfort Area
Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors
As we all enjoy the holidays and get ready for
2014 – your Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for a great year building on
the successes of past-president Myron Moore
and the 2013 Chamber Board.
OFFICERS
Each year, your Chamber Board meets in November/December to
set goals for the coming year. Unlike many strategic planning efforts
that cover several years and end up ignoring their strategic initiatives,
the Chamber focuses on initiatives that can mostly be accomplished
within the next year. Many of the strategic objectives can be implemented immediately. For example, the Chamber Board is adopting an
objective directing the Chamber Board to take a more active and public stand on local issues of importance to the business community,
reinforcing part of our mission to be an advocate for business interests.
Other objectives of the Chamber encourage a deeper engagement
with our community partners that impact the economic fabric and
quality of life of our community like Kentucky State University, Kentucky Capital Development Corporation, Frankfort/Franklin County
Convention and Tourist Commission, and Downtown Frankfort Inc.,
along with the Franklin County Fiscal Court and the Frankfort City
Commission. Although all the organizations have their separate missions, there is enough common interest for the groups to seek new
opportunities to move the Frankfort/Franklin County Community
forward. The Chamber’s theme for this year’s Annual Meeting, to be
held on February 7th, is “One Voice – One Community”. Your Chamber aspires to facilitate discussion around important community issues
with these organizations and others to develop “One Voice” for our
community.
If you are interested in seeing our community grow and prosper, think
about joining one of the many committees that will implement the
strategic objectives of your Chamber. Contact Carmen Inman, Executive Director, Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce at 502-223-8261
to learn more.
Thank you for the honor and privilege of serving as your Chamber
President in 2014. Let’s grow Frankfort!

Rebecca Ruth Candy Factory was chosen as the Best
Food Gift from Kentucky by Food Network Magazine.
The distinction is especially prestigious as only one food
was chosen from each of the 50 states in the United
States. Rebecca Ruth Candy owner, Charles Booe stated,
“we had no idea we had been chosen until our customers
started calling and sending emails. Our online orders
have skyrocketed. We and all our employees are doing
our best to keep up with the additional demand for our
chocolates. Online sales are through the roof! We have
all been working extra hours, and at the end of each day
there have literally been only a few cases of bourbon balls
left. We have been lucky not to make anyone go without
bourbon balls so far.”

2014 PAUL SULLIVAN AWARD NOMINATION
Paul P. Sullivan was a Frankfort native, President of Farmers Bank from 1965
until his untimely death in 1980, and an unselfish philanthropist.
Mr. Sullivan’s leadership created benchmarks in Frankfort’s progress and prosperity
that may never be equaled. He helped to organize the Frankfort Industrial Foundation
in the 1960’s that was able to purchase Frankfort’s first industrial park and he spent 10 years raising
money for the YMCA both to get construction started and to ultimately pay off the debt. As Chairman of
the Plant Board he played a major part in keeping utility rates at a minimum while overseeing the building
of the water treatment facility. Mr. Sullivan also helped to guide the construction of the Capital Plaza, the
Farmers Bank main office, was involved in refurbishing the former Southern Hotel as a residence for the
city’s elderly, and in restoring the railroad depot on Broadway.
In 1981, the Chamber began honoring the memory of Paul Sullivan with an annual award in his name presented

A Big THANK YOU to our 2013 Reality Store sponsor, Kentucky Employees Credit Union and to our t-shirt sponsors. We appreciate your continued support of this valuable event.
Reality Store is an active, hands-on, real-life simulation, which gives
young people the opportunity to explore career opportunities and make
lifestyle, and budget choices similar to those adults face on a daily basis. Participants assume that they are 25
years old and have completed basic educational requirements for their specific occupation. Students then
draw a family; some students may not have any children, while others may have up to 4 children. Participants
are given an occupation based on their grade point average and provided an equivalent salary to proceed
through the “Reality Store”.
This year over 548 eighth grade students, representing Capital Day School, The Academy, Frankfort Christian
Academy, Elkhorn and Bondurant Middle Schools, and Second Street School, along with 60 volunteers participated in the Reality Store.

The award was presented by Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Jefferson Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
The Third Thursday Thing team received the award for developing and sustaining an educational program

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National
Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.
More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of
every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.
As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to
highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and
U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.
National Small Business Week has been recognizing the special impact made by outstanding entrepreneurs
and small business owners since 1963. During this week, the U.S. Small Business Administration honors small
