June 2016 Volume 4, Issue 6 Echoes Across the River The Joy of Generosity Following the Word of God brings life giving joy to every aspect of our lives. During my first year as your senior pastor, I shared my commitment of passionately teaching the Bible and encouraging us to follow its good instruction in every area of our lives. Part of that included an exhortation for us all to follow the Biblical instruction to tithe our income to the work of Jesus Christ at KFUMC. Because so many of you chose to follow the Bible’s instruction in this regard, KFUMC finished 2015 with a surplus of revenue. Based on the recommendation of your Finance Committee, the Church Council voted to use those funds in a couple of ways. First, they fully funded our emergency operating reserve fund which had been significantly depleted in previous years. Second, they analyzed our asset replacement fund and were satisfied it contained sufficient funding to care for our facilities. Third, they voted to use the remaining $59,000 for missional purposes. At the last meeting of the Church Council, the group prayed and discerned that it would please God for KFUMC to build a Habitat for Humanity home here in Kerrville. This house will be paid for with the balance of the 2015 surplus! Praise God for the opportunity to both ensure the long-term health of KFUMC and to bless our neighbors! This fall, we will all have the opportunity to participate in establishing a new forever home for a family in our community. We will work closely with our local Habitat for Humanity Board and staff. Each one of us will have the chance to be involved in some way as the house gets underway. In 2016, we continue to see the fruit of faithful generosity from our members. We have not had a single fundraiser or special appeal for money, yet we have fully funded our ministry here and our outreach efforts around the world. Giving a tithe to our church allows us to do and be the things God calls us to do and be for Him! I am so honored to be your pastor and to personally experience the joy of generosity among you. I know every time I drive by the Habitat House we build, I will feel joy knowing that a deserving family has a home because like many of you, I chose to follow the Bible’s instruction and tithe to KFUMC! I began my devotional time in the morning by reading the “Field Guide for Daily Prayer”, and it has been a renewal for my soul! “Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.” This is a prayer which I have been using over the past few weeks. It was written by St. Augustine who lived in the fourth century and helped to influence church doctrine to what we know today. This is one of many prayers that help start my day, and I will tell you they make a difference! Beginning your day with a prayer of confession as well as thanksgiving is a great way to see and experience God’s love and grace. Daily prayer has helped me be centered before a busy day, and has brought calm in the midst of it. If you believe your soul would benefit from the discipline of daily prayer, I encourage you to give it a try! Who knows, maybe this is something the Lord is leading us to do together. If you have an interest in daily prayer, then come and speak with me to explore what millions of “God Glimpses” in the Halls youth camp. Later, from 2008 to 2010, Christians around the world have and Outside the Walls Kendra worked at camps and attended come to know and love in the college. In 2007, her father was released of KFUMC regular practice of daily prayer! by Linda Parsons Grace and Peace, Pastor Phillip Hoeflinger June Sundays Colossians: Christ, our Head In studying Colossians, we find that Christ is central to all aspects of the life of the church. He is our foundation and head, shaping and renewing our individual lives, family lives, and corporate practices. Kendra Thomas ,who is married to FUMC’s former Praise Team Leader, Spencer, shared her faith story with us. She grew up in San Angelo, Texas. At the age of seven, her family faced some difficult challenges. Kendra’s father spent most of 1998 in jail and on trial. Her family attended the Sierra Vista Methodist Church. The minister was aware of the family’s situation and met with the family just before Kendra’s dad was sentenced to serve a long prison term. The church rallied around the family, adopted them, and gave them grace. Kendra’s family moved several times, downsizing as a result of lost income and a missing parent. A group of men from the church took the roles of handymen and did repairs around Kendra’s house, and the church at times paid utility bills so that money from Kendra’s mom’s paycheck could stretch to purchase food. Kendra’s and her twin sister’s names appeared at Christmas time on the Angel Tree at the local mall. She was always surprised when she and her sister would receive identical gifts. Her face lit up as she mentioned one particular gift which holds a special place in her heart—a guardian angel necklace she still owns today. In Kendra’s own words, ”I had a messy life that some amazing people loved me through.” In 2001, she met Rusty Freeman and our very own Ryan Barnett at a from prison. His long separation took a toll on her family. Her mom had been supportive during his years in prison, but her parents divorced after his release. Spencer Thomas attended an event called MYMission Camp in San Antonio. As he entered the door, he spotted Kendra across the room and mentioned to Beth Palmer that he wanted to marry that girl. God had a plan for this couple! They met, dated, and married on January 3, 2015. Shortly after their honeymoon, they received a call from Pastor Ryan asking them if they would consider going to Costa Rica as missionaries! My family and I vacationed in the small town of Lake City, Colorado, for several summers. In the window of the Swanson House restaurant was a Christmas tree with a sign that boasted it was Christmas year round. I envision Kendra’s church having this similar spirit. They didn’t just adopt an angel on a tree in the mall. They adopted a family and were Christ-like 24/7, 365 days for nearly ten years. What a dividend we have all received from that church’s generous spirit! Kendra Thomas is an amazing, articulate young woman who will change lives in Costa Rica. Kendra believes “the global church is a place where we love everyone in whatever mess they are in, but we refuse to let them stay there.” Kendra has the heartaches of her early years to showcase we don’t have to have our past define our future. Maybe all those tiny bumps in her life’s journey have prepared her to share her faith and feed a flock of teenagers in Costa Rica. Discipleship OUR STAFF Clergy Share Christ With Our Neighbors Ryan Barnett, Senior Pastor I had the honor of attending a Young Life Club meeting recently. This organization focuses on bringing High School students into relationship with Jesus and uses a format that is simple, fun, and biblically to the point. Young Life Club meetings start with interactive worship music, followed by a few games to involve everyone, then end with a few minutes of presenting Jesus—much like a sermon in one of our services. Our very own Josh Smithson shared a lesson about Jesus using a personal testimony (aka, embarrassing story) with a story about Jesus’ healing to back it up. The kids were captivated by the teachings of Jesus from Josh's story and reading of the Gospel. That's when it hit me. Why do we make sharing Christ so hard? We often fall prey to so many misconceptions that simply aren't true. Things like "I don't know enough of the Bible" or "Only pastors are for sharing Christ". Actually, the more biblical knowledge you have the better, but you don't need to memorize the Bible or have a seminary degree to share Christ. We are all called to share Christ in our spheres of influence (neighbors, coworkers, friends, family, fellow students). To share Christ, all we need to do is be honest with the people we come in contact with about our own lives and problems. Build a relationship so they feel comfortable around you. Then most importantly, tell how Jesus helps you! It doesn’t need to be a well thought out sermon or a bunch of scripture quotes. In fact, it’s probably better that it’s not those things. Start by praying before you speak to someone. Ask the Holy Spirit to enter you and give you the words to say. Then, just be yourself. Try sharing a funny story about something you did and showing how Jesus helped you or a time that you felt very low and Jesus picked you up. Personal stories are the most effective! People will feel comfortable when they know you aren’t perfect and that Christ is what completes you. They too will want to feel the love that Jesus has to offer. Even people who look like they have it all together are often hurting the most inside. You will find they are often very hungry for something that secular things can’t provide. Tell them the good news about Jesus and give them some living water. You will find when you share Christ in this manner your own relationship with Jesus will grow even stronger. If the person you have shared Christ with doesn’t respond or run to the church to proclaim their faith, don’t be discouraged. It rarely happens that way. We are called to plant the seeds; only God can make them grow. I am a great example; it took 29 years for my seed to start sprouting. In God’s time, that’s just the wink of an eye. So just plant the seeds for Christ and let the Holy Spirit do the rest. And, it doesn’t hurt to keep watering them! After you read this, open your Bible immediately to the Gospels, read some of Jesus' stories, and be inspired to tell others about what Jesus has done for you. Let’s all take note of the Young Life approach, keep it simple, fun and biblically to the point. It’s also good to do something unexpected for people in the name of Jesus. I like a storm as long as it keeps a “friendly distance” from me. Watching the sky dance with lightning is a reminder to me of this wonderful creation God made and how all the systems serve unique functions. I like hearing the thunder roll as well! But when the storm gets too close and the hail is pounding on the roof and against the windows, I will admit that creates some anxiety for me. As I was thinking about the storm which hit the night of May 17, I realized that sometimes I want to “watch from the sidelines” as I don’t like stormy situations. I am reminded of a plaque I have in my office that reads: “Sometimes God calms the storm. Sometimes He lets the storm rage and calms His child.” At a recent meeting, our district superintendent spoke about the same concept. His words were, “God is not in the storm but in our response.” I think these thoughts are communicating basically the same thing. God is with us, regardless of the situation; but it doesn’t mean that God “fixes” situations according to our wants and desires. I realize that Luke 8 records Jesus’ calming a storm for the disciples. Yet, he also asked them, “Where is your faith?” When we respond with faith and trust in God, there is no storm we cannot weather with His help! I pray that your storms will be few. But when they do come, I pray that your response will be one of trust in the ultimate and holy One. After much prayer and discernment, our Church is pleased to announce that we have hired a new youth director, Brock Bomkamp! We are excited to have Brock join our church family and are looking forward to working with him as we continue to emphasize our ministry to youth here at KFUMC! Below is a message from Brock. Please be in prayer for both him and our youth that God continue to be faithful in the midst of this transition. “Growing up in Dripping Springs, I heard and accepted the Gospel message of Jesus my sophomore year in high school at a Young Life Polar Bear Retreat. Upon returning to school, football quickly became king of my life once again, but in my senior year when I was unable to play football, I felt the Lord calling me into full-time ministry while at a SWTX Youth Midwinter. Much like the people of Israel I wandered once again when I started college at Baylor University. While leading camps in college I heard the Lord call once again, and this time I answered yes. Since then my passion has been making the Lord known to youth and taking them on a path of discipleship with the Lord. I graduated from Baylor in August of 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation, and in October 2012 I was hired as the youth director at Lutie Watkins UMC in Llano, TX. I am excited to join the family at Kerrville FUMC in June 2016 and continue a tradition of excellence in youth ministry. “ Pentecost Service (under the tent) May 15, 2016 Yours along the way, Donna 4 What a blessed event to worship God together! Many thanks and praises for the children and youth, the music, testimonies of God’s healing, the gift of God’s word, and the fellowship of sharing a meal as we experienced Pentecost once again!
