Come dwell in the Word—
Join us This Thursday, August 9th at 7:00 pm in the
Adoration Room of the
Chapel. What is Lectio Divina? Sacred Reading
- Spiritual reading is a discipline of openness to
encounter God through Scripture. When reading
the Scriptures slowly and meditatively, the
Word becomes a means of grace through which
we encounter God who speaks to the ears of our
hearts to draw us more deeply into God presence. The Spirit speaking through the Word
opens us to God’s love, God’s call and God’s
purposes. This is a radical reversal of the way
we normally read. Come dwell in the Word, so
you can be refreshed to dwell in the world.

Our Summer Camp journey started on Friday July
the 20th. We filled up a Santa Fe School bus, a
trailer, and 3 other vehicles. We loaded up 25
scouts and 7 adults and headed North to Stone
Mountain, Ga. Our final destination was to eventually be Camp Woodruff just North of Blairsville, GA. While at Stone Mountain, we traditionally perform a “Scouts Own”, or an inner faith service that allows our scouts to reflect on and practice their faith while camping. Our theme that day
was to reflect on being “fishers of men”, and practicing parts of the scout law like being friendly,
courteous, and kind during our camp week, not only to our troop mates, but also to those we run into
during our travels: “What would Jesus do?”. During the week we saw many acts of kindness from our
fine young scouts, and I would like to share a few of them with you.
Early on in the week, Scott Kortright came up on 2 scouts from another troop who were struggling to
get an injured scout from another troop to 1st aid with a twisted ankle. For those of you who do not
know Camp Woodruff, everything is uphill. Scott picked the injured scout up and carried him until
they found help. Another great example came from our youngest scouts (6th graders: Mateo
Rodriquez, Patrick Tanner, Taylor Fedderly, Andres Reyes, and Jacob Hurysz). I had the pleasure of watching them grow into young scouts all week with their Troop Guide (Life Scout) Andrew
Hartpence! They started the week very focused on themselves, instead of working together and helping one another. By the end of the week, they were helping each other with chores and tasks and moving from merit badge class to merit badge class with each other, leaving no one behind. Last but certainly not least is our Troop Scoutmaster, Brian Hartpence. Brian spent his own free time every
morning teaching scouts at camp how to swim. Most of his students could not swim a stroke when he
met them, and the staff there was more than glad to have him volunteer. The amazing thing to me is
that by the end of the week, most of Brian’s students were able to swim and also able to pass the BSA
swim test (which is a really big accomplishment to all the scouts there). There is nothing more satisfying than being able to teach a youth the confidence of knowing a life skill that they will remember for
the rest of their life if not save their life someday! The smiles on their faces say it all!
Congrats to all the scouts of Troop 505 and their leadership team. They all preformed wonderfully during the week. The accomplishments were many, and the disappointments were few. Our leaders piled on many hours of scout training, learning the “scout” way. While our youth conquered many
fears and achieved many outstanding results (from shooting a dime on the rifle range, to learning life
saving skills, to performing a great skit in front of hundreds of scouts and staff, to water skiing and
learning to operate a boat, or learning climbing skills and facts about nature, forestry, and citizenship
just to name a few).
All of this would not be possible without your support and
prayers. We traveled over 1100 miles safely on the road this summer,
and we have our parish, Santa Fe Catholic HS, and our KOC Council
4726 to thank for it. Our Troop is maturing and growing, spiritually
and physically. I know our efforts (yours and those of our leaders)
will pay huge dividends to our community and country through these
fine young men in years to come! Thank-you again for all of your
support. If you would like more information about our scouting
programs, or how you can help, contact Paul Hurysz @ 863-2054375, or [email protected].
