You can even have a BRC in your own home or office! Access
to the library’s online catalog as well as regional and statewide collections is available from the library’s website. You
may log into your account to reserve and renew materials. You
can also use various databases provided at www.mel.org. The
library staff keeps a list of important websites on their
webguide under the Reference Button. Call (231-220-3100) or
email ([email protected]) to reserve a meeting room.

Business related books, magazines, periodicals and
reference resources. From “writing a business plan”
basics to titles on specific types of business start-ups
and growth. Reference directories assist in research
and other demographic information.
Internet based resources. Websites, market research
and other web-based tools for the entrepreneur who
needs to tap into the World Wide Web for the most
updated information.
Business Counseling. A trained MI-sbTdc business
counselor is available for one-on-one business
counseling. Our counselors travel throughout the BRC
network and have regularly scheduled days when they
are at each location. Library or chamber staff can help
you set up an appointment.
Business Seminars. In addition to monthly “How to
Start a Business” seminars, there are other training
and seminar programs designed for entrepreneurs
that are held throughout the BRC network.
Our BRC has lots of resources and materials that can help you!
We also have a great BRC website with quick links to many
tools and materials that entrepreneurs need as they develop
their business and/or idea. Business Plan templates, competitor
information, market research and industry analysis are just a
few examples of what you will find.

THE BUSINESS PLAN…
an important tool for any new business
Business planning does not offer solutions to business
problems, but a well-written business plan will determine
the feasibility of a project and lay out the action necessary
to meet the goals.
There is no exact formula for putting a business plan
together. It can be as simple as handwriting on a “yellow
tablet” or more involved and “professional looking”
depending on who you plan to show it to.
Whatever the format, there are a number of “specific
topics” that should be covered:
• Executive Summary
• Management
• General Description
• Legal
• Products and Services
• Finances
• Marketing
• Operations
There are books at this BRC that will help you understand
each part of a business plan so you can organize your ideas.
Visit the BRC website for easy to use business plan templates.
Once you’ve roughed in your ideas, there are (free and
confidential) business counselors available to help you finetune and complete your business plan. Just Ask!
