Speaker Insight
The Indian gems & jewellery industry has the appropriate understanding of marketing / technology but there is a lack of funding for the same. We
need to gain more knowledge of developing customer confidence, designing capabilities, market needs and coordination with management.
It is important for members of the industry to keep abreast of new developments and trends as the industry USP and strength lie in both. One
way of doing this is to develop India as a base market for trend forecasting by incorporating our heritage and culture.

Technology Plays an Important New Role in the Industry’s Success
Nirupa Bhatt, Managing Director - GIA, India and the Middle East, Shishir Nevatia, Partner – Sunjewels India Pvt Ltd, and Vipin Sharma, Director – Jewellery, World Gold
Council, focus on the need for the Indian gems & jewellery industry to keep abreast of new technological developments…
What do you feel is the level of interest shown by the audience at the IIJS
seminars?
Nirupa Bhatt: IIJS seminars are a great platform for visitors to get the latest
information on the most relevant topics related to the industry. There is a consistent
level of attendance, which demonstrates that trade members are actively seeking
avenues to further their knowledge. In a dynamic industry like ours, it is important
to create platforms for the exchange of knowledge and ideas.
Nirupa Bhatt Shishir Nevatia: There has been a huge change in the last few years. Indian jewellers
have realized that learning is extremely important and seminars provide a huge
opportunity to learn from experts. In many sessions, it is difficult to find space unless
it is reserved in advance. People benefit from such seminars and realize that even if
they can apply one point that they pick up, it could mean a big difference.
Vipin Sharma: IIJS is the biggest gem & jewellery trade show in India. The
seminars hosted at this event are key platforms for the industry to showcase the latest
trends in jewellery, gain consumer insights and interact with key industry leaders.
Shishir Nevatia In your opinion, is the Indian gems & jewellery industry at par with other
centres regarding expertise in technology?
Nirupa Bhatt: The gem & jewellery industry witnesses a unique combination in
which skill and art meets technology. Technology contributes to many aspects of the
gem and jewellery business - manufacturing, accounting, sales, purchasing and
marketing. Jewellery manufacturing facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art
machinery, the e-commerce technology platform is continuing to gain ground and
the experiential marketing and customer service management is increasingly relying on
Vipin Sharma
new technology to improve consumer experiences and increase loyalty.
Shishir Nevatia: For exports marketing, we need to take the next step, i.e. look beyond the trade.
Technically, we are knowledgeable, but lack the dedication, systems and discipline of some of our
competitors.
Vipin Sharma: The Indian gems & jewellery sector is one of the most important and fastest
growing sectors of the Indian economy. It is highly export-oriented and labour-intensive and is a
major contributor to employment, GDP and foreign exchange earnings. Some of the organized
jewellery retailers are well informed of the latest marketing and technological innovations and
utilize these effectively to engage with consumers.
In which aspects do you think the Indian industry needs to gain more expertise?
Nirupa Bhatt: The export market presents a huge opportunity for the Indian industry. Luxury
jewellery brands throughout the world are creating Indian-inspired collections. This cultural
strength should be leveraged to create impeccable collections for the global audience. In
manufacturing, special attention should be given to finer details – such as links and hooks – to
create quality craftsmanship.
Shishir Nevatia: Basics such as good communication, making and keeping promises,

punctuality, openness, empathy, cleanliness and orderliness and determination are important.
These are the first steps in getting all other technical, design and commercial expertise.
Vipin Sharma: The key to this vibrant industry is a long-term policy approach towards gold &
gold jewellery that balances demand and macro economic factors.
How important is it for members of the industry to keep abreast of new developments
and trends? Can you advise on a practical way that they can do this on a continuous
basis?
Nirupa Bhatt: Today, a lot of information is available on the internet. It is important to study
current trends, innovations and other luxury-goods industries. Trade associations like GJEPC
organize various events to facilitate learning, idea sharing and networking.
The trade needs to take advantage of these opportunities to foster innovation and growth.
Shishir Nevatia: The world is always changing. We should try and keep abreast if not slightly
ahead. If we are left behind, it becomes extremely difficult to catch up. To stay on par, one needs
to visit and participate in shows, read trade and other magazines, surf the net, visit shops, be
interested in allied fashion products and trends and take short term courses in order to learn
different skills.
Vipin Sharma: The industry should always keep the consumer at the center. As Indian consumers
evolve and adapt to new trends and technologies, the industry should evolve and adapt with the
changing times. Platforms and industry forums like IIJS act as a good catalyst for change.

IIJS is indeed a major sourcing hub for the industry...
E
vents like IIJS make buying
a lot easier. Identifying
and negotiating with suppliers
under one roof is very helpful.
Sourcing at IIJS takes care of at
least 20-25%
of the annual
requirements
and, almost half
of the remaining
demand can be
attributed indirectly to IIJS.
Due to IIJS we are able to
plan our purchases so that the
order placing happens at one
go and the deliveries can be
scheduled over a longer period of
time. We are able to find at least
2-3 new vendors every year.
The need of the hour is trendy,
delicate-looking yet durable
designs and styles. Cost is a major
factor in today’s tough times.
Going forward, a lot depends
on the policies of the new
Government at the centre.

The members of the Pune Sarafa Association find it convenient to register
for IIJS at the Road Show because it is held almost at their doorstep! This
year more members will be registered because GJEPC representatives are
doing an excellent promotions, visiting each city and
creating more awareness.
I feel that it is important for members from my
association to visit IIJS, in order to update their
knowledge about business trends, new designs and new
techniques and see the latest machinery for making light
weight ornaments. We welcome the date change as this period is the off
season due to the rains and traders will have more time to visit IIJS.
We hope business will be good in 2014, thanks to the new Government’s
vision of promoting local business. We hope that unnecessary laws, rules

IJS is an important platform to showcase our new product offerings and provides
an ideal meeting ground to connect with customers. It is organised on a worldclass level, with greater diversity in jewellery categories and
countries. In the current scenario consumers are moving towards
minimalistic designs. Due to increased demand for individualistic
and price-consciousness, designers and manufacturers are opting for
gemstones to deliver unusual colour effects and affordability.
We will display a versatile product range with the main focus
on lightweight necklaces starting at less than two carats diamond
weight. We have used new setting techniques to maintain prices yet deliver a bold
look. Customers will see a lot of coloured gemstones, enamelling and polki, adding
another dimension to diamonds.
Bringing the show forward would give us a head start in executing orders for the
festive season.

exhibitors from India and overseas to meet each other, which is

would be no exhibition. Introducing new collections is an ongoing

INDIA INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY WEEK
A
fter completion of four successful years, India International Jewellery Week, popularly known as IIJW, is all
set for its 5th edition this year. Conceived and conceptualized by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, IIJW
is Asia’s first jewellery week. Spread over four glittering days, IIJW features renowned designers and jewellery houses
of India who showcase the vast set of skills and talent that India has in the design and production of exquisitely
crafted jewellery. Leading Indian models sashay down the ramp, adorned with these exclusive and glittering creations at shows choreographed by ace choreographers in a glamorous setting that is frequented
by celebrities, high profile clientele, dignitaries and the who’s who of society.
Comprising of eight shows per day over the period of four days, each designer
showcases exquisite jewellery creations for 20 minutes on the ramp followed by
media interaction with designers & celebrities, networking with buyers, etc.
Each show is attended by more than 300 special guests.
Spotlight on Designing Talent
Over the years, leading Indian retail houses/ designers have chosen the IIJW
platform to showcase their proficiency in jewellery designing. This year too,
retail giants like Gitanjali, Ganjam, Emerald and Saboo and renowned designers
like Farah Khan, Vijay Golecha, Sumit Sawhney and Dipti Amisha are few of the leading
names who will be part of this trend-setting show.
IIJW not only provides a platform to established designers, it also serves as an impressive debut stage for
upcoming talent. With institutes like IIGJ, NID & IGI presenting the skills of their students, along with independent
new designers, IIJW showcases the enormous potential of the budding talent in this country.
Glamorous Extravaganza
If the diamonds, rubies and emeralds glitter on the stage, Bollywood stars of the silver screen and TV artists also
dazzle on the catwalk. In past years, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Konkana Sen Sharma, Sonakshi Sinha,
Bipasha Basu, Soha Ali Khan, Lara Dutta, Kangana Ranaut and
Kalki Koechin have set the ramp ablaze. SONAM KAPOOR, the
IIJW brand ambassador, startled the audience adorned with
the exclusive piece by House of Boucheron. While Sonam
Kapoor continued with her charm in 2012 and 2013, Madhuri
Dixit, Sushmita Sen, Yami Gautam, Chirangdha Singh and
Juhi Chawla stunned the audience with their grace at this unique
platform.
Extending the popular concept, last year IIJW was launched at New Delhi.
The objective of the IIJW New Delhi is to provide retailers, manufacturers and
designers from Northern India with their own exclusive platform to showcase
their collections. It also aims to bring the show closer to the elite
Delhi society. This is based on the popularity and patronage
that the show has been receiving from participants and
audience of the region.
