Resident of the Month
Frances Ter Wisscha
Frances was
born in Sioux
Center, Iowa to
John and Julia
Vreeman. She
was the third of
their ten children. The family lived on a
farm. When Fran was six years old
they moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa
for about three years and then back
to Sioux Center. Fran remembers
having lots of fun growing up with
nine brothers and sisters. They always had close neighbors and they
all gathered in the Vreeman’s yard
to play ball.
When Fran was sixteen the family
moved again, this time to Minnesota. It was there she met her future
husband, Gerald Ter Wisscha, at
church. They married in 1951.
Fran and Gerald moved to Lynden
in 1952. Gerald went to work as a
salesman for a farm equipment
dealer. The couple had four children: Larry who now lives in
Marysville and Dale, Diane and
Pam who all currently live in the
Lynden area. When the children
were small Fran remembers taking
them to pick strawberries, raspberries and beans. The youngest was
only 2½ at the time.

Gerald eventually bought his own
farm equipment business, Community Farm Services, and Fran
worked in the office. After running
the business for about ten years
they sold it and stayed on for two
years to help the new owner get
started.
By this time their children were
grown and they decided to take
some time off to travel. They
bought a motorhome and traveled
all across the United States. Being
avid golfers, they took their golf
clubs wherever they went. Fishing
was also a favorite pastime. They
came home with a freezer full of
halibut and salmon after spending a
month in Alaska. They also went to
Thailand to help build a church.
Another favorite pastime was playing cards with friends - pinochle
was their favorite.
Gerald passed away in 2002 at the
age of 69. Fran continued to live in
their condo in Lynden. She learned
to knit and crochet and did a little
traveling. She went back to Minn(continued on page 3)

1. Preheat the oven. Check to be sure
there are no rubber balls or plastic soldiers lurking on
the shelves.
Remove blocks and toy cars from the table. Grease
the pan. Crack the nuts.
Measure 2 cups of flour. Remove Johnny’s hands
from the flour. Wash flour off him. Re-measure the
flour.
Crack more nuts to replace those Johnny ate. Put
flour, baking powder and salt in the sifter. Get the
dust pan and brush up pieces of the bowl that Johnny
knocked on the floor. Get another bowl.
Answer the doorbell. Return to the kitchen. Remove
Johnny’s hands from the bowl again. Wash Johnny.
Answer the phone. Return to the kitchen.
Remove the half inch of salt from your greased pan.
Look for Johnny. Grease another pan. Answer the
phone. Return to the kitchen and find Johnny.
Take up the greased pan and remove the layer of nut
shells in it. Head for Johnny who runs, knocking the
bowl off the table.
Wash the kitchen floor, table, walls and dishes.
Call the bakery and order a cake. Take 2 aspirin and
lay down. Don’t forget to turn the oven off.

My Mother Kept a Garden
My mother kept a garden,
a garden in her heart.
She planted all the good things
that gave my life it’s start.
She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream.
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem…
And when the winds and rain came,
she protected me enoughBut not too much because she knew
I’d need to stand up strong and tough.
Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrongMarkers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.
I am my Mother’s garden.
I am her legacyAnd I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me.

esota to visit family and went on a couple of cruises with friends. Church is
an important part of her life and Fran belongs to Faith Community Church.
Bea Hemple (who was Joy Moorlag’s mother) got Fran involved with the In
Touch group. It’s a group of widow and widowers that meet weekly to share a
meal (a potluck or at a restaurant) and then play games.
“Happy
Birthday to
You…”
Fran moved to Lynden Manor in March 2015. She is a faithful member of our
morning exercise group and enjoys playing bingo
and attending entertainment programs. When she
moved in she discovered that she already knew
quite a few people living here and has made many
new friends. Today her family has grown to include
fifteen grandchildren and twenty-three greatgrandchildren. Many of them live in the Lynden
area and she enjoys seeing them often. Fran says
that “all in all, I’ve had a really good life”.
