ON THE STAGES
ALBANNACH
DUBLIN 5
Albannach in Scots Gaelic means
“Scotsman,” and Scots they are—born and
bred. A traditional pipe band they’re not.
You’ll probably never see them march in
a parade, but Albannach’s rhythms and
melodies take you back to that bygone
time when pipes and songs were banned
because of the power they have to stir stout
hearts and Celtic souls. Ye canna resist!
Formed in 2006, Dublin 5 has taken
the Celtic music scene by storm thanks to
an eclectic mix of traditional roots and
blazing instrumentals with an amped-up
rock twist. This high octane group is sure
to keep you on edge until the final song
has been played!
BARLEYJUICE
SUN
These five spirited Yanks are currently
one of the most beloved Celtic rock bands
in the USA. Barleyjuice is a grand group
of talented tunesmiths and prodigious
performers, and the absolute best
time you can have at a concert without
removing your kilt.
ENTER THE HAGGIS
2
SUN
Since 1995, Enter the Haggis have led
the charge among Celtic Folk Rock
bands, delighting fans with their inspired
song writing, memorable performances,
musical proficiency and high-quality
recordings. The band’s new single, “Mrs.
Elliot,” is a triumphant return to form,
showcasing their signature sound and
instrumentation; bagpipes blaze over a
powerhouse hard-rock rhythm section.
BURNING BRIDGET CLEARY THE FITZGERALDS
Called “the Allman Brothers of Celtic
fiddle bands, only prettier”, Burning
Bridget Cleary’s high-energy and tightly
woven harmonies in both fiddle and vocals
will keep you on your feet. Known for
captivating sounds and engaging stage
presence, they are one of the hottest
young acts on the Celtic/folk music circuits.
KILMAINE SAINTS
SAT
SUN
Meet the Fitzgeralds–a family group
consisting of high-energy fiddling and
mind-blowing step dancing. Despite their
young age, The Fitzgeralds are some of
the most talented, energetic, animated,
and genuine performers you will come
across. This is a group of entertainers who
truly love what they are doing and thrive
on interaction with their audiences.
Ce lti c F l in g & H igh la n d Ga m e s • June 25-26, 2016
SAT
Formed in 2009 on good whiskey, bad
intentions, and their love of superior music,
the Saints and their Guiness-soaked hearts
have been storming the North East playing
hundreds of blistering, high-energy shows
that have kept people wanting more.
The Kilmaine Saints are equal parts Irish
swagger, Scottish pride and whiskey.
NEIDFYRE
[nide-fahyuh r] (Mel Ginsberg) - A solo
artist with international flair, NeidFyre
serenades with Scottish, Irish, English and
Russian folk songs. She plays traditional
tunes on fiddle, sings with a genuine passion
and infuses vivacity and sheer joy in her
love of music. She performs nationally at
Celtic and Renaissance festivals.
POOR MAN’S GAMBIT
SUN
As one of the newest traditional bands on
the Celtic music scene, Poor Man’s Gambit
offers a dynamic presentation of Irish and
Scottish songs, tunes and dance. Featuring
Genevieve Gillespie, Corey Purcell and
Kevin McComb, Poor Man’s Gambit is an
energetic and engaging trio that is sure to
entertain any audience.
Please Note: Bands without day designations perform Saturday & Sunday.
Bands with day designations only play on that day. See schedule (pg. 8) for more details.
THE ROGUE DIPLOMATS
SEASONS
TARTAN TERRORS
The Rogue Diplomats got their start in
Astoria, Queens, playing their annual St.
Patrick’s Day show at Blackbird’s Bar. They
are currently expanding their repertoire
and looking to take this show on the road
to Philadelphia, New England, or any other
place that will let them share their love of
Irish music and whiskey with the world.
Seasons is comprised of five siblings
seeking to not only pay homage to the rich
tradition of Celtic and American folk music
that they grew up in, but also to treat it
as a living, breathing entity. The result is
a constantly growing collection of original
songs and tunes that are all at once both
fresh and familiar.
Tartan Terrors are their own Celtic Invasion, mixing rock’s energy with traditional
folklore, dance, and humor. With an arsenal
featuring classic pipes and fiddle, driving
drum tones, and signature guitar styles,
standing-room only audiences understand
why Dig This Magazine declares them as
“one act to keep an eye on!”
SEAMUS KENNEDY
THE TOWN PANTS
SCREAMING ORPHANS
FRI/
SAT
Four sisters with the good fortune to have
been raised in the magic of Bundoran
in County Donegal, Ireland. They have
carved a great reputation of being a
captivating and entertaining live band
in Europe and America, combining their
own original pop/rock music with the Céilí
tradition style of music that was inherited
from their family roots.
SCYTHIAN
Dubbed by The Washington Post as
“DC’s most energetic and eclectic band”
Scythian (sith-ee-yin) belts out a high-energy
adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of

musicians are natural showmen who seamlessly
blend kicked-up Celtic, folk and world music,
and deliver it with a punk-rock sensibility.
FRI
Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland,
Seamus has been entertaining audiences

FRI/SAT

of high energy “West Coast Celtic” that
remains in the heart and head long after
the music stops.

CELTIC FLING FEIS
and all of our volunteers for all of their
hard work and input in making this Feis
what it is today.
COMPETITION
Saturday, visitors to the Fling are welcome
to watch the ongoing Feis competition with
its 1000 dancers, many of who will advance to participate in regional competitions known as Oireachtas (pronounced
“or-rock-tas”) and the highest levels to the
World Championships in Ireland (Oireachtas Cruinne). While competition among the
dancers is clearly keen, the bottom line is
that for each of them, Irish dancing is FUN
and a link to their Irish heritage.
IRISH DANCE
SATURDAY • JUNE 25
What is a Feis? An Irish StepDancing Competition. Sounds
simple enough, right? Think again!
A LITTLE HISTORY
Before looking at the modern Feis
(pronounced “fesh”) it’s important to recall
a little history. Irish step-dancing as we
know it in the 21st century can be traced
back to traveling dance masters of 18th
century rural Ireland. They each developed their own “steps” (footwork danced
to eight measures or bars of music) and
competed against each other for the opportunity to teach in different regions.
After decades when Irish step-dancing
remained relatively unknown outside of
its inner circle, Riverdance hit the world
stage in the 1990s. Suddenly, Irish stepdancing became the “rage,” not just in
Ireland but world-wide. Families who had
never even heard of a “step” or “ghillie”
were enrolling their children in step-dancing classes and assembling at Feisanna
(plural for Feis) to watch them compete.
THE CELTIC FLING FEIS
The Celtic Fling and Highland Games
and Mount Hope Estate & Winery is
proud once again to be the official Feis
sponsor of the 13th annual Celtic Fling
Feis. Through our combined efforts with
the Irish cultural society, the Pittsburgh
Winter Feis and the West Virginia Feis
we have grown to be a destination on
the Feis circuit. A special thank you to Jim
Graven, Kathy Yates and Jared Spencer
NORTH AMERICAN FEIS COMMISSION
The Celtic Fling Feis is a member of the
North American Feis Commission, an
organization of Feis Managers responsible for organizing Feiseanna throughout
Canada and the United States. The NAFC
provides guidance for establishing and
executing a multi-cultural event developed and promoted to advance Celtic
heritage through Irish dance and music.
It also exists to promote Irish culture— it’s
evolution, symbolism, appreciation and
respect—as well as to encourage study
of Irish Culture in North America. •

REID SCHOOL OF
HIGHLAND DANCE
SCOIL RINCE
NA CONNEMARA
The non-profit Philadelphia Highland
Dancing Association was founded by
Marguerite Reid over 60 years ago. The
Reid School of Highland Dance performs
at various venues such as the Green Lane
Scottish Irish Festival and Philadelphia
St. Andrew’s Society events such as their
Tartan Ball. A special memory for the
school was performing with the Davidson
School at the Kennedy Center Honors
Gala for Sir Sean Connery, the President and other distinguished guests when
Mr. Connery received the Honor in 1999.
Scoil Rince na Connemara from Northeastern Pennsylvania has been entertaining crowds at the Celtic Fling for
10 years. The mission of this innovative
dance group is to further Irish culture
by showing the true beauty, grace, and
athleticism of Irish dance which includes
intricate solo stepdancing, artistic group
choreography, and traditional ceili
dancing. Connemara is renowned for
their unique blend of progressive stepdancing with modern Celtic sounds that
is often imitated, but never duplicated.

LIVING HISTORY
THE 69TH PA IRISH
VOLUNTEER REENACTORS:
GLASSBLOWING AT DRAGON’S
BREATH GLASSWORKS:
TRADITIONAL IRISH WAKE
DEMONSTRATION:
Living History Encampment • Times Vary
During the American Civil War, the 69th PA Irish
Volunteers fought in every campaign with the
Army of The Potomac under the green battle
flag to save the Union. Today, reenactors honor
their memory by participating in living history
programs; they were truly the “Rock of Erin”.
Dragon’s Breath Glass Booth • Times Vary
Working with a furnace that can reach
2,000 degrees, the Dragon’s Breath
Glassworks team creates beautiful and
functional glass art right before your
eyes. Stop by throughout the day for live
demonstrations, or to purchase their
affordable, hand-crafted wares.
Boarshead Stage • 11:15AM–6:00PM
The Irish Wake is perhaps one of the best
known funeral traditions associated with Ireland.
As long as there have been Irish people,
there have been wakes - both traditional
and “American Emigration”. The period
between a death and a burial was a time
for both mourning loss and celebrating life.
LOCH RANNOCH PIPES & DRUMS:
CATHOLIC MASS:
IRISH LINEN WORKER:
Opening Gates & Throughout the Shire
Formed in 1997, Loch Rannoch Pipes & Drums
marched in its first parade with just five
members. Today, the award-winning group
marches with 23 members. While based
in Bucks County, the band has marched in
parades from New York City to Edinburgh,
Scotland and has performed on the steps of
the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.
Feasting Glenn • Sunday at 11:00AM
No ticket necessary for this event—All are
welcome to take part in the Holy Sacrifice
of the Mass presented by The Diocese of
Harrisburg. Special Thank You to: Jaclyn
Curran, Reverend Bernardo Pistone and
Mary-Kate & Peter Lee from Seasons who
made this liturgy possible and meaningful.
Boarshead Stage • 11:15AM–6:00PM
The fame of Irish linen is widespread, but how is
it made? Observe the process from beginning
to end as Timothy, an Irish linen worker, uses
authentic tools to change dull-looking fibers
to glorious fabrics before your eyes. A
delightful, informative running commentary
during the demonstration will provide the
human touch to these nearly forgotten skills.
CLANS & SOCIETIES
Celtic folk frequently use the term “clan,” but no specific definition of the term is
accepted by all authorities. The word itself is Gaelic for “children” and was also used
as an equivalent for “family.” Regardless, a clan is considered to be a group of families
that are affiliated by geography or marriage or political necessity.
You’ll find many clans and societies represented at the Celtic Fling. Stop by and learn
more about the programs, plans and worthwhile missions the clans and societies maintain
for increasing the awareness of Celtic influences on American culture.

for wondrous prizes! Signups take place 30 min. prior
to start time at the event
location. Spots are limited.
MEN IN KILTS
WHAT ARE THE HIGHLAND GAMES?
Professional men and women compete in
traditional Scottish Heavy Events (listed
below). Competitors are assigned points
according to their placement in each athletic
competition. The athlete with the best overall combined performance earns the title
“Athlete of the Day” and earns an automatic
berth in the East Coast Championships in
Alexandria, VA, and in the coveted North
American Highland Games Championship
in Richmond, VA in October.
SCOTTISH HAMMER: A round metal
hammer head weighing 22lbs with a cane
staff is thrown for distance. The athlete’s
feet may not move until he releases the
hammer. Best of 3.
SHEAF TOSS: Using a three-tined
pitchfork, competitors hurl a 20lb burlap
bag filled with straw over ever higher
standards. The bar is raised until only one
competitor remains.
CLACHNEART: Similar to our modern-day
shot put using a stone weighing 16-28lbs
instead of a steel ball. Each contestant is
allowed a 7.5 foot “run-up” to the toe-board.
56LB WEIGHT TOSS: A weight, with
handle attached is tossed over a bar
raised between two standards. Using only
one hand, each athlete has 3 attempts to
clear the bar at each level.
28LB & 56LB THROW: Athletes throw
metal weights with a chain or handle
attached in a toss for maximum distance.
Most popular throwing form is that similar
of the discus. Best of 3.
CABER TOSS: The centerpiece for
modern Highland Games and remains
a true test of brute strength, timing and
balance. The caber is a log 19 feet long,
weighing up to 130lbs.
