ACADEMIC NEWS
FRENCH
Congratulations to all Grade 10 French girls who participated in Conjugation
Saturday: you were all focused and at the height of your creative powers. A
special thank you to all parents who provided snacks, especially Mrs Masters for her
delicious croissants!
ROCKET PROJECT
A few weeks ago our NS teacher presented us with our term’s assignment,
which was to construct and launch a rocket. Mine was made out of tubes
and bits from old water guns, along with felt material
and foil. The rocket was able to shoot
5-6 m vertically and a similar length
upwards.
Thankfully, my teacher was
impressed with our class’s results
and many of our rockets will be
displayed and re-launched at our
Open Day.

must go to the U14 swimmers who won most of their races. We are very excited about
the young upcoming talent. Thank you to all the Grade 8s whose support and

GENERATION EARTH - WATER
Water is our most basic and precious resource. What would we do
without it? More than 840 000 people die each year due to water related
diseases; a large amount of these are children. This is because a huge
amount of people do not have access to clean water.
We know that in South Africa this is a very serious problem. Every day we see burst
pipes, running taps and rubbish floating around in dams, streams and rivers. We see this
in our communities, parks and working environments. What we don’t see is people trying
to do anything about these problems.
This is quite strange since we are quick to complain about the state of our water
catchments, but it seems that no one is willing to take action. We can’t sit around waiting
for someone to do the jobs that we find are too undignified for us to do. Why do we think
we are so important that we can’t keep our own environment clean?
Whether or not we caused the problem, it still exists and if we don’t take care of it, who
will? Water Week is from 16-22 March. This Water Week let’s appreciate the importance
of water in a productive way. If it’s making sure none of the taps around your house are
leaking or organising a clean-up at a nearby dam, let’s protect our beautiful country and
people.
