At the MDRA Club meeting on February 9th 2012 in the Chace Park
Clubhouse, members and guests were treated to a demonstration and
lecture from local fishing guru Dick Schaffer
Dick went over tackle, technique, and tips for fishing the local surf.
He explained that surf fishing is an excellent way to catch lots of fish,
without the need of expensive equipment, travel, or excessive investments
of time.
Dick served the local fishing community through the Purfields tackle store
in Los Angeles for well over a decade. Since his retirement in 2011,
he continues to help people find joy in fishing, through lectures and
demonstrations throughout southern California.
You can find Dick at the Fred Hall Show, in Long Beach, at
the Friends of Rollo booth, supporting another great organization that
introduces kids to the sport of fishing that we all love.

visit to the
Hatchery at
Carlsbad was
very interesting.
Josh stated that
anyone who
wants to visit the
Magic Castle can
get a visitor pass
from him.
Dick Shaffer was
our featured
speaker and his topic was surf fishing. Here are some
tips. You only need 1 rod as 8’ or 9' graphite Steel
Head of 6-12 lbs. matched to a good quality spinning
reel. He uses 6 lb mono line with 2'-3' flouro leaders, a
#4 Owner Mosquito Hook on a Carolina Rig with bead
and sliding sinker. Dick uses 2' Berkley Camo Worms
artificial scented bait. Soft shell sand crabs with roe
also works for Barred Perch, Croaker, and Corvina.
Currently anglers are taking 20-30 Barred Perch a day.
He recommends catch and release. In summer you can
catch halibut on crocodiles or Lucky Craft jerk bait. The
"best time to fish is whenever you can" particularly if
it's the 3 hours before high tide and the moon is full.
The best strategy is to look for brown sandy water and
rips or storm drains and keep moving until you get bit
then work that spot. Dick offers to take Club Members,
3 at a time, at a discounted rate, and he donates the
money to our Youth Fishing Program.

Member Fish Report
Larry Brown's 16 day charter on the Red Rooster 3 was a great success. Larry landed 3 tuna over 200#s
of the 14 total number of cows caught. He used exclusively his Avet reels and Phenix rail rods and
experienced limit like fishing for big tuna and great wahoo fishing as well.
Tuna will be available for his fellow MDRA members shortly.

Trophy for Harold Cabrera’s 34lb halibut and

In attendance were Ron Smothers,
George and Pam Balian,
Jerry and Selma Gleason
There are approximately 2900 new residents
in the Santa Monica bay thanks to the work
of the White Sea Bass Pen Pals. I was
fortunate to witness the release of the newest
brood as they very casually explored their
new freedom.
Special Thanks and Congratulations to
Joshua Gerson, Jack Topal, Stan Zisser
and all the Pen Pal volunteers for another
successful release. Thanks also to the
Junior Pen Pal interns.
The club has scheduled our annual Tuna trip aboard the Ocean Odyssey out of San Diego late July!
Fortunately we were able to secure later dates than last year allowing the water to warm up just a bit more for
the Pelagic species. This is perfect time for albacore, bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, dorado and yellowtail.
MDRA has a special price which makes this 2.5 day trip less expensive than a two day trip.
The price is only $425, which includes food and Mexican permits.
This is almost 25% off the scheduled price for MDRA members and family only. The price does not include
tip which is typically around 15%, beer, or possible fuel surcharge. We are limiting the number of anglers
to 27, which is very comfortable as the boat has sleeping accommodations for 40.
The trip departs at 9PM on Sunday, July 29 and returns Wednesday, August 1 at 6AM.
Check out the web site at http://www.oceanodysseyfishing.com
Call or email Patrick Schlehuber ASAP to get your reservation at 310/595-5150 or [email protected].
This trip always fills up fast, so make sure to sign up soon!
As soon as you book please send your full payment to
MDRA Treasurer Bob Godfrey, 13082 Mindanao Way #25, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292.
