SeniorLINK Program
SeniorLink instructor Gene Busekrus leads a computer class.
The SeniorLink program offers computer classes
to mature adults in an intimate classroom setting.
SeniorLink began in 1997, thanks to a donation
from Belleville Township. SeniorLink has always
been about making students comfortable using a
computer with simple, low-stress, hands-on classes.
We provide an easy-to-follow instructional manual
and peer-assisted instruction.
People who have taken classes are now able to
correspond with their children, grandchildren or
friends more frequently, pay bills, shop online or
explore the world without leaving their home!
Classes include: keyboard/mouse, beginning and
intermediate Windows, Internet, email, social
media, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Print Shop, photo
editing, Kindle, iPad, etc. Classes are limited to
seven students or less and meet for two hours once
a week for six weeks. Classes are offered weekday
mornings, afternoons or evenings, depending on
the volunteer’s availability.
Already know how to use a computer and want to
share your knowledge with others? We are looking
for volunteers to teach our seniors. You do not need
to be a certified instructor; you simply need to have
a good knowledge of computers and patience. If you
understand and use Windows 8, we especially hope
you will consider volunteering.
Technology keeps changing and so do we.
Mailing has become costly, so we are requesting
all SeniorLink members who do not receive our
schedule via email to contact Julie Hughes and
tell her you want to “Be Green and Keep It On the
Screen.”
Take the plunge and have some fun learning the
SeniorLink way! To register for class, contact
Julie Hughes at 618-234-2210, ext. 7018 or
[email protected].

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
April 21-27
Celebrating People in Action
National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate people
doing extraordinary things through service.
More than 17,000 seniors in Illinois contribute their time
and talents in one of three Senior Corps programs. Foster
Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to
more than 4,900 young people who have special needs.
Senior Companions help more than 820 homebound
seniors and other adults maintain independence in their
own homes. RSVP volunteers conduct safety patrols for
local police departments, protect the environment, tutor
and mentor youth, respond to natural disasters and
provide other services through more than 2,500 groups
across Illinois.
It’s important to take the time to honor individuals
who take action and solve significant problems in their
communities. Since our nation’s founding, volunteers
have been the source of action and change. More than
two hundred years later, their energy continues to make
our nation a better place. Join us in thanking those that
give of their time for their country. Sharing of their time
and talent is immeasurable.
Perhaps you would like to experience the intangible
benefits of volunteering—such as pride, satisfaction
and accomplishment. Volunteering doesn’t have to
be complicated and advances in technology and social
networking make it easier to find your place to get
involved. You may find answers to the questions you
have at http://www.nationalservice.gov. To receive more
information about the Senior Corps programs, please call
618-234-4410, ext. 7036.
RSVP Volunteers Needed
For a complete listing of the exciting
volunteer opportunities available,

or call Pat Etling at 618-234-4410, ext. 7012.
Look at some of the exciting opportunities available!
•Want to be a part of the number two art show in the country
and see work from the finest artists in the nation? If so, Art
on the Square, the premium art event, is looking for special
people to help the weekend of May 17-19. Volunteers are
needed in the souvenir booth and the high school student art
show. Morning, afternoon and evening shifts are available. •RSVP is looking for a few volunteers to educate senior groups
about sustainability. If you are willing to speak to mature
adults about “Going Green,” this fun and environmentally
friendly assignment is for you. Free training is provided.
•Your Mission: Help our troops call home! One of our host
sites, VFW Post # 1739, is collecting old cellphones, mp3
players and iPods for the “Cellphones for Soldiers”
program. RSVP will pass the donated items on to the
veterans for processing. Proceeds from donated cellphones
are used to purchase prepaid calling cards for American
troops. This is a great way for the community and veterans to
help current soldiers keep in touch by calling home.
•Faith in Action needs you! Volunteer as a driver. Just two
or three hours once a week will make a huge difference in
the life of a mature adult who needs a ride and a friendly ear.
There are two Faith in Action programs seeking volunteer
drivers – Collinsville and Granite City.
•Tapestry of Community Offerings is seeking volunteer
cashiers to help at the resale shop on Tuesdays, Wednesdays
and Fridays. Shifts vary and training is provided.
•Let others know you care by helping at the Collinsville
Historical Museum. Share your talents and skills, for only a
few hours each month, and make a meaningful contribution
to this wonderful site and to the community. Volunteers are
especially needed on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.!
•St. Elizabeth’s Hospital needs you! Opportunities include
clerical support, information desk/greeter, patient internal
transport, gardeners, patient visit rounding, outpatient
surgery waiting room attendant, IT assistant and magazine
cart rounding.
Please consider any of these worthwhile volunteer
activities; the life you inspire may be your own!

Wellness Activities for April
Falling Facts
Twenty to thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate
to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures or head
traumas. These injuries can make it hard to get around or live
independently, and they can increase the risk of early death.
Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls. The
most common are fractures of the spine, hip, forearm, leg,
ankle, pelvis, upper arm and hand.
Many people who fall, even if they are not injured, develop a
fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities,
which leads to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness,
and in turn increases their actual risk of falling. Among older
adults (65 or older), falls are the leading cause of injury death.
They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and
hospital admissions for trauma.
• Older adults can remain independent and reduce their
chances of falling by following these simple steps:
Exercise regularly. It is important the exercises focus on
increasing leg strength and improving balance, and that the
exercises get more challenging over time. Tai Chi programs are
especially good.
• Ask their doctor or pharmacist to review their
medicines – both prescription and over-the counter – to
identify medicines that may cause side effects or interactions
such as dizziness or drowsiness.
• Have their eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once
a year and update their eyeglasses to maximize their vision.
Consider getting a pair with single vision distance lenses for
some activities such as walking outside.
• Make their homes safer by reducing tripping hazards,
adding grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower and
next to the toilet, adding railings on both sides of stairways
and improving the lighting in their homes.
Try out any of our classes at PSOP (listed below) to improve your
overall well-being.
ZUMBA GOLD/TONE! Designed for the active older adult
and all physical abilities. This program is a fun, exciting
way to get moving. Latin style dance and music is used at a
lower intensity than Zumba Basic classes. Classes are held
Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. Sheri
O’Donnell is the instructor. The cost is $5 per class, or you
purchase a five-class punch card for $20.
TAI CHI is offered Mondays (beginners) and Tuesdays
(advanced) from 12:10-12:50 p.m. The cost is $36 for six
weeks. Instructor Delores Gordon has been certified to lead
Tai Chi for Arthritis, the Yang Ten Form, SHIBASHI, Tai Chi
for wellness and other forms of this practice since 2002.Come
and try out one session free to see if it fits your needs!
The cost to join the EXERCISE PROGRAM is $75 per year.
Included in your membership are the Arthritis Foundation
exercise classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon held at
PSOP and use of the Roosevans Fitness Room. Try out the
exercise class for free to see if it is the right fit for you!
The Roosevans Fitness Room has exercise equipment for
your use. Try the treadmill, elliptical trainer or recumbent
bike to incorporate different endurance exercises into your
routine. Use the dumbbells to strengthen your muscles and
the stability ball to work on your core and balance! There
are exercise tapes for you to check out to take home to use. A
television is also available for your viewing as you workout.

The Civil War Happened HERE!
Saturday, April 27
In St. Louis, the Civil War happened on the streets and parks. It
was neighbor against neighbor. The streets that are now filled
with people going to a Cardinals baseball game were once the site
of events, incidents and hostilities that forever changed our city.
NiNi Harris, author of the upcoming book, “A Most Unsettled
State, First-Hand Accounts of the Civil War in St. Louis,” will
guide you around St. Louis, pointing out where troops camped
and where Union and Confederate leaders lived or gathered. The
trip will include a visit to the Robert Campbell House Museum,
the Old Courthouse and Jefferson Barracks, where more than
200 Union and Confederate generals had served. This is a bus
tour with limited walking. Cost is $85 per person and includes
lunch at McGurk’s (please state if you prefer corned beef and
cabbage or fish and chips). Deadline for reservations is April 8.
Pick-up points are PSOP in Belleville at about 8:30 a.m., then
the Caseyville Township Center in Fairview Heights at about
8:50 a.m. Return will be about 5:15 p.m.
Daniel Boone and Wine Country
Wednesday, May 15
Linda Koenig takes us to Augusta, Mo., to tour the beautiful home
built by Daniel and Nathan Boone and to tour the surrounding
Boonesfield Village (which includes the Peace Chapel and
the oldest one-room schoolhouse in Missouri). After lunch at
Ashley’s Rose, visit Balducci Winery and Sugar Creek Winery
and enjoy a stop at historic Centennial Farms to purchase apple
butter and other harvest favorites. Cost is $87 per person and
includes step-on guide and lunch. Deadline for reservations is April
25. Pick-up points are the Holiday Inn in Alton at about 7:15 a.m.,
then the Caseyville Township Center in Fairview Heights at about
8 a.m. Return will be at 5:15 p.m.

SHIP
Senior Health Insurance Program
The SHIP office has been busy!
The whole program under the Department of Aging,
formerly known as Circuit Breaker, is completely new,
so we have had some glitches. We really want to thank
you all for being patient while we maneuver this new
program.
This year we no longer recognize Circuit Breaker as the
program; it is now called the Benefit Access Application.
Filing this year, 2013, will be good for two years, and you
will be notified when it is time to renew.
If you are applying for the Metro Pass, you will no longer
receive the postcard letting you know you can get your
pass. You will be able to get a statement at once for the
pass.
All of this will be more efficient and faster, but
unfortunately the beginning can be difficult, so bear
with us until it becomes more familiar to you. We are
encouraging you to make an appointment. We can
be reached at 618-234-4410, ext. 7033, with office hours
from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Wednesday.
Electronics Recycling at SWIC
Electronics recycling is the second Sunday of
the month on the M5 parking lot at the SWIC
Belleville Campus, weather permitting.
SWIC will host its Earth Day Celebration
Monday, April 22, along with many
other recycling opportunities.
Let’s be green in thirteen!
Recycling
Did you know that PSOP is a
recycling/collection site?
PSOP takes…
• old shoes (help build water wells)
• old prescription eyeglasses (given to the Lions Club)
• old cellphones (given to Cellphones for Soldiers)
• aluminum cans (funds go to Advocacy Program)
Please bring any of these items to PSOP. Let’s go green together!
St. Clair County Metro Pass Hours at
PSOP Metro Passes are issued at PSOP
on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.
ATS
We occasionally get phone calls from seniors who need ATS
service on short notice due to unforeseen circumstances, but
have never registered for the service. Since you must register
with ATS to use our service, please consider doing so even if
you don’t anticipate using the service immediately. Please call
ATS Monday through Friday to begin the registration process.
For individuals who qualify for ATS service under the American
with Disabilities Act criteria, there is no age limitation. For
those individuals who qualify for ATS service as part of the
senior program, the minimum age requirement is 60.
For the senior program, you must be a resident of Belleville
Township, the city of Belleville, Stookey Township or
St. Clair Township.
ATS is proud to be a part of the community. We encourage
your comments and suggestions. For further information,

Counseling Corner
Kate Underwood, BSW
By Jodi Gardner, MSW, LCSW
Al Jolson wrote the song that goes, “Life is not a highway
strewn with flowers; still it holds a goodly share of bliss…
Though April showers may come your way, they bring the
flowers that bloom in May, so if it rains have no regrets.”
This simple song reminds me that sometimes it has to rain
for us to recognize the sunshine. Through difficult times,
it is hard to see that flowers and rainbows may be on their
way, taking their own sweet time to present themselves.
Sometimes counseling is helpful to make the rainy days
more bearable and to explore the flowers (and the weeds!)
that may pop up along the way. We wish you a happy
spring, with just the right mix of showers and flowers!
Support groups and individual counseling remain available.
For further information about counseling and resource
consultation, contact Jodi or Kate at 618-234-4410,
ext. 7031 or 7039.
