Issue No. 11-24

The Scarlet Letter’s DOÑA DOROTHEA GAZANO y GARCIA
July’s Sampler of the Month
As our Sampler of the Month, you may save 15% by purchasing 2 of the
following during July:
• chart $26.50
• Lakeside Linen, the 40c cut w/2-inch margins is $20
• AVAS silk $94.60 or incorporating a bit of Overdyed Silk using Dinky Dyes,
Gumnuts & Gloriana’s Florimell with some of the AVAS called for, $114.40
Right, I found this blue-green skein a better match with the solid silk
used in the reproduction in the very top row and the third row. I
wasn’t happy with the color I started with, but I’m not ripping out the
Roman numerals.
And I’m pleased with the browns in the
checkerboard stag. I usually don’t enjoy stitching very long in brown,
but when it’s a stag, that is an exception! I can feel my pleasure
lessening when I’m stitching with a color that I don’t like, but give me
a red or many other colors and it’s pure pleasure! I love all of the
different motifs. I can’t wait to get over to the red barn and the redroofed building and the other building scene, a church? And the
lovely satin stitch bands ... and the floral vines ... I love it all!

SPECIAL JULY PROJECT:
Needlemade Designs’ “Home of the Free Sewing Set”
The
scissors is
on back order
but we expect
them back in
stock in about
two weeks.
Thanks for
your
patience.
The perfect accompaniment for the new patriotic scissors ($12): The boxtop design, pinkeep with E Pluribis Unum on one side and the federal
eagle on the reverse, and scissors fob with the year 1776 on one side and a portion of the flag on the reverse. Designer Linda Vinson says, “Home of the free because of the brave reflects my belief that we live in one of the greatest nations that
has ever been on the face of the earth. This nation, and the freedoms it affords its people, did not come to be through inaction or apathy. Our freedoms are founded on the willingness of patriots to fight and, if necessary, to die to protect this country. I chose to use the motto E
Pluribus Unum in my design because I fear that we have forgotten the importance of being a united people working toward a common goal: a
bright future for our children and grandchildren. I chose the year 1776 to honor the sacrifice made by our founding fathers and all who
fought for this nation in the years that followed.
“To do my small part to honor our military for the sacrifices that they have made, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each chart
will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.”
The “Home of the Free Sewing Set” chart ($15) includes all charts and finishing directions with photos, a complete listing of materials
to buy and decorate the box and the paper needed to decoupage the firecracker needlecases (sizes 24, 26, and 28), and a length of twine for
the fuses. See Schedule for August 6 afternoon box painting workshop!
For those of you who would like to stitch the set but do not feel up to the task of painting your own box, the design fits perfectly into the
top of the rectangular treasure box on the right ($17).
AND during July save 15% on your purchase of the entire project: including the box of your choice ($3.50 OR $17),
chart ($15), 28c linen for this over-one project ($9), silk threads + silk ribbons ($46.50).

Semi-Annual Framing Frenzy
Saturday, July 23, Our Semi-Annual Framing Frenzy
Held each year in February and July, it is time once again for
your opportunity to save 20% on your custom framing
order, including frame, mat, and fillets, when you let Sandy
use her expertise in selecting the perfect frame to enhance
your needlework.
Many of you have come to know why I so respect
Sandy’s ability to choose the mouldings for all of our shop
models as well as my own personal pieces. She knows her
very large moulding inventory and what will do the best for
your finished piece, whether a sampler, a landscape, or even
an antique piece. Her framed pieces are shipped all over the
country to needleworkers who have come to appreciate her
eye for just the right finish for your precious treasures as well
as the precision she uses to mount it and the archival
practices she follows with each piece, as if it were her own.
Give her your budget and your likes and dislikes (“I
don’t like gilded, but I love primitive”) and she will do the
rest. This discount does not apply to the framing labor
charge nor to readymade frames. All orders will be
processed in the order received, and orders with deadlines
are ineligible for the FF discount.
November

An Attic Exclusive, Ann Wheatley’s 1829 Sampler from the Private Collection of NeedleWorkPress!
Above, Part 2 of the “Ann Wheatley 1829 Sampler,” being
stitched by Margaret, our Stitch-Along leader for this summer
project. Here’s what she writes about this installment as her
stitching notes to all of you: Part 2 of Ann Wheatley is quite
straightforward. Be forewarned: It does involve a whole lot of words. As
far as those words go, just remember that the “s” is taller than the other
letters, so work them accordingly. Don't do what I did and make the top
of the “p” be at the same height as the “s” and thus make the rest of
your row be one stitch higher than it should be! Otherwise, the words are
pretty straightforward. The bottom acorn border is the same as the top
one, except for how it ends on the right. So just watch out for that and
you'll be good to go. Enjoy! So that's it for July. —Margaret
P.S. Just wanted to provide an advance heads up that if using NPI,
completing Ann’s entire sampler requires a complete skein each of greens
156 and 664. So, if you aren’t a thrifty thread user, you may want to
have two skeins on hand.
Above, images of the Surprise included within Part 2: chart and
instructions for creating the charming needlecase, front and back,
using motifs from the sampler, Eve on the front and the flower motif
(modified a bit) on the reverse side, with charts and finishing
instructions included. Note the vintage perforated paper needlecase
pictured in the upper left. Vickie’s “Notes for Ann Wheatley - Part 2”
suggest that this little needlecase could have been stitched by Ann’s
daughter about 1850 or so, the peak time for enthusiasm for
perforated paper.

Right, the last of this wonderful project, Part 3 of Country
Stitches/With Thy Needle & Thread’s Mystery Sampler,
“Birds of a Feather,” earlier this week was revealed with the
publication of this image.
And for some of you who needed to see the whole of the
sampler before making your decision, we have extra copies of
the 3 chart parts as well as extra supplies, Weeks or
Lakeside linens in several counts, hand-dyed floss in either
cotton or silk, so that you can get started now.
Also new and coming this week from Country
Stitches/With Thy Needle & Thread:
Left, “Sampler of the Season - Autumn” $10 begins a new
seasonal series; the “Winter” will be available on the first day of
Autumn.
Below, “Berries & Blooms” $14, which includes patterns for 4
sewing companions: a bird pinkeep mounted on an antique sewing
spool, complete with strawberry emery dangling from its beak; a late
19th century antique reproduction sewing caddy; a cross-stitched
pincushion with hand-dyed rick-rack ruching; and, lastly, a pin/
scissor/needle keep sweetly housed in a tiny 3” embroidery hoop.

It’s Here ... and it’s $85.
Left, The Micheál and Elizabeth Feller Collection
Volume 1 from Needleprint has arrived! We
received our order late yesterday and will
process and ship yours just as quickly as we
can. The good news: Volume II is coming in
2012 (always nice to have things to look
forward to) and when you see the quality of this
Needleprint publication, you will want both as
part of your library.
Right, the stunning Dorothy Ward sampler,
the chart for which you will find inside the
jacket of the Feller book. The sampler uses the
Montenegrin stitch, found often on early 17th
century band samplers. It can, of course, be
worked in cross stitch - but more authentically
in Montenegrin.
Below, a most useful book that clearly
illustrates with easy-to-read diagrams how to
execute this complex stitch when recreating
historical samplers.
Some years ago Amy Mitten published a detailed guide on
working the Montenegrin stitch, now out of print, but the good
news: now Amy has republished it. Here’s what she says about
it: This compact coil-bound notebook includes over 100 stitch diagrams to
help you work this complicated stitch. Whether you are working the stitch
horizontally, vertically, diagonally or around corners, this book has a detailed
stitch diagram to assist you! The Montenegrin Stitch is a reversible stitch
and this new revised (Exhumed) version has instructions for the traditional
method, reversible to four-sided-stitch method and a double-sided method. Coil-bound, 124 sturdy pages with color photos, stitch diagrams and a mini
sampler chart, all in a compact 5 1/2” x 4 1/4” format.
We’re ordered these as well and they should be here very
soon. The price: $36

July’s Band in the very beautiful “Spanish Mystery Sampler” Stitch-Along
Oh, how I wish that I were stitching this beauty! Each time Paula sends me her progress photo it gets even more enticing.
Here’s what Paula says about this month’s band: “Happy July – we’re halfway through this gorgeous sampler! The row for this month
involves quite a bit of stitching – there is both the winding vine and then all the pinwheels to stitch. You’ll notice on the original image of the chart, that the
last pinwheel and part of the next one to the left of it are in a bright pink colour. I didn’t really want to use the bright pink; however, I didn’t want to stitch
these in the brown, so I chose the wine colour, which to me is in between both choices and I feel it gives a subtle punch of colour. I love Jean’s suggestion of
making changes to reproduction samplers that suit each person’s choice.

whether you want a large enough cut
to include all 3 on one piece of linen

which means there’s more to

They’re stitched over one on
28c linen, and there are more
planned for all seasons and for
the Holidays as well. These
are 6 nautically themed
designs, which can be stitched
together to make one long
scene or stitched separately.
There’s also included a bonus
chart of a mermaid, included
as a mirror image as well so
the mermaid can be used in

28c over one.

Sadie is a companion and friend of Jenny Bean, and her sampler features the pledge she would have learned in 1892, the original verse
written by Francis Bellamy. This wonderful chart publication is a must-have for several reasons, not the least of which is the historical
perspective that every American should know about the original pledge and its journey to the current wording. The lovely sampler, on
Weeks Havana, features a number of well-charted specialty stitches, and also included is the chart for Sadie’s Needle Book (see page 11).

Last Saturday was a special day at The Attic
Long-time friend, DeAnne, was in town
and spent the morning with us. We so
miss her since she moved away 4 years
ago. Some things change through the
years, but it’s wonderful when others
don’t. DeAnne’s wonderful spirit is still
there, despite battling some serious
health challenges. We hope she decides
to join us in November to celebrate a
milestone birthday! She continues to
belie her age.
She and Betsy had fun reminiscing
about the Merry Cox cruise.we took
together.
And Here’s Some of What Was
Being Stitched on Saturday!
Left, Loretta’s beautiful “Birds of a
Feather” and, right, Amy’s gorgeous
“Quaker Virtues” ~ but she may
not recognize the photo.
For
whatever reason, the beautiful green
linen and silk she is using were
completely changed by the camera’s
eye. I wish I had time to take a
photography class. In my next life!
Sunday afternoon Tucker and
Mya definitely had the right idea.
An afternoon nap was the order of
the day for them. Unfortunately,
the sound of my camera awoke
them, but not enough to move
much more than to look at me.
What a great idea they had!
