The Bryan Family's Story
At first, Gary and Michelle Bryan assumed
their son David just had a virus. Nearly three
years old at the time, the otherwise healthy
toddler started to seem a little lethargic.
“Everything was absolutely normal,” says Gary.
“He was running around, talking. All of a
sudden we noticed he started getting a little
bit tired. It really wasn’t like him, because he
loved to run around. He didn’t want to walk.
Then he started throwing up.”
hospital, the nurses recommended they contact
the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, and
in August of 2010 the Bryans began what was
to become an eleven-and-a-half month stay at
the Chestnut Street House.
During this time, despite multiple surgeries,
his doctors believed as much as 30% of
David’s tumor was inoperable. Complications,
including meningitis, meant David spent
much of his time in intensive care and that his

“We thought it might be Lyme disease, which says Gary. “It was a very heavy time.” Finally,
in December, David’s doctors decided, despite

Because of the severity of David’s condition,
he was immediately flown from the Bryans’
hometown of Canadensis, PA to The
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. That night,
David’s doctors drilled to relieve the pressure
in his head from the growing primitive
neuroectodermal (PNET) tumor, and the
next morning he had his first of many
surgeries to try and remove the tumor and
treat his cancer.
Initially, the Bryans did not know how long
David would be in the hospital. “We didn’t
know anything,” says Michelle. “The cancer
was very aggressive and rare in someone
so young. They gave him just a 10% chance
of survival.” After a week of sleeping in the
two ways about it. I told him, ‘There’s your
answer. Let’s go for it.’”
The six-hour surgery proved to be a great
success. “The doctors were overjoyed, as
we all were,” Gary says. “His chance of
survival went up to 50%.” In the months
following the procedure, David underwent
a bone marrow transplant and proton beam
radiation, as well as daily speech, physical,
and occupational therapy. In August, after
nearly a year in the hospital, David was
released. While David must come back every
three months for brain and spine MRIs, it
appears there are no signs of cancer. Now

because of the tumor and its impact on his
brain. “He’s essentially starting from scratch,”
explains Gary.
The Bryans credit the House with making
David’s illness more manageable. With Gary
from Ireland, and Michelle from Puerto
Rico, they had no family in the area to offer
support during his time in the hospital. “There
is no way we could have done it without
the House. We would not have been able to
cope,” says Gary. “From the financial aspect,
there is no way we could have afforded it. It
takes away all of the pressure and you can
concentrate on your child. The House has
thought of what you need before you know
you need it.”
Staying at the House allowed the Bryans not
to only focus on David. “You can’t focus
just on your sick child, and the House really
helps with that. We had to keep thinking of
Jennifer, David’s five-year-old sister. Whatever
David went through, she went through. She
was very scared, but to her, the House was a
magical place. When we found out we were
going home, Jennifer said ‘I don’t want to go
home. I like it here.’”
Michelle agrees. “Being able to stay here is
wonderful. It keeps the family together,” she
says. “I have to say I did not miss my house.
My house during that time was empty and my
family was here. This was truly my home for
all of that time.”

The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House’s 3rd Annual Plane Pull®
On September 25th, twelve very enthusiastic teams assembled
at Atlantic Aviation to participate in the 3rd Annual Plane Pull®
and test their strength against a 74,000 pound private plane.
The venue filled with excitement as Ronald got the pullers
loose and limber with his warm-ups, and families and friends
cheered on their favorite teams. This year, teams dressed in
various attires from super-hero costumes and Scottish kilts to
Firemen uniforms. The Ronald McDonald Camp Counselor
team took home first prize in the costume contest!
Together, the teams raised over $46,000. PHL Marketplace
food and shops and UAS Integrated Security Services were the
highest fundraisers, each raising over $7,250 for the families
staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, and team
Philly WITT took home the top prize as the fastest pulling team
with an amazing 13 second pull.

A Board Member’s Perspective
Since volunteering at the House and joining the Board in 2007, I
have had many occasions to tell friends and colleagues about the
Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House and the good work done here.
I have been struck by how many people already know about the
House because they have benefited or knew someone who benefited
from staying at the Philadelphia House or other Houses. While their
specific stories vary, there is a common theme of appreciation for
the care and comfort received at the House during a family’s most
difficult time. My appreciation of the impact of the House has only
grown over the years.
The Board of a non-profit serves critical roles including oversight
of strategy, operations, and finances and has important fiduciary
responsibilities. The House’s Board certainly fulfills these
responsibilities and goes even further by truly supporting the
Thank you to everyone who supported the
Philadelphia magazine’s Design Home 2011®.
The five weeks of public tours raised over
$73,000 to benefit the families we serve here
at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
Our sincere appreciation goes out to all of the
volunteers who donated their time to make
this event possible. Special thanks to Sherry
Litwer, Project Manager of the Design Home;
Connie Willson and Sue Wenger, the Design
Home chairs and to all the other members of
the Design Home committee.
Thank you to all of the wonderful patrons
and Coupon Book sponsors who made
our participation in the Design Home
2011® possible.

is pleased to announce that we will be the
beneficiary of Philadelphia magazine’s Design

mission of the organization. The
Board includes people with many
different backgrounds and
experiences, but has one common
purpose – helping the families.
Whatever the issue or debate, the
focus starts and ends with the families
and how we can best serve their needs.
Our meetings start with a visit from
one of the families staying at the House
which definitely reinforces that need.
Mike McAleer
Partner, KPMG LLP
and Board Member
Being a part of the Board starts with serving families through
volunteering, fundraising, offering expertise or simply a little
elbow grease. I pride myself in expert gift wrapping, pot washing,
cheerleading and occasional arm twisting, as well as serving as
Treasurer. I have received great support from my own family who are
counted among the House’s many volunteers. I have also benefited
from the leadership of our executive director and past and present
board members, particularly those that have served in many ways for
many years, including two that founded this first House. It has been
a pleasure to serve, and I look forward to continuing to support the
families and the House.
The Perfect Holiday Gift
Want to give a gift that shows how much you care? The holidays
are right around the corner, and there is no better way to show
your love this season than with the help of Guilianna’s Heart™
necklace. This beautiful heart pendant was lovingly designed by
Kimberly Rinaldi, with the help of jewelry designer Steven Lagos.
Kimberly created the pendant in honor of her daughter Guilianna,
who was born with Down syndrome and cardiac defects. The
piece was inspired by Guilianna’s strength, determination, and
strong will. The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House is proud
to be the beneficiary of the proceeds from the sale of this beautiful and meaningful
piece of jewelry.
Sterling silver heart pendants come in two sizes (small is pictured) and with two variations
of chain styles, with the small pendant starting at $85. More information is available on
our website at www.philarmh.org/Giulianna or by contacting Jeanette Woehr
at 215.387.8406 or [email protected].
Give the Gift of Home this Holiday Season
This holiday season, we invite you to give the gift of home to families when they need it most.
We invite you to Share A Night with the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House as part of our
annual campaign. By giving your gift, you'll ensure that families with sick children will have
a place to call home, no matter how far away they are from theirs.
You can make a contribution today by filling out and sending back the envelope enclosed

Ronald McDonald Camp 2011—Celebrating 25 years In August, campers had a blast celebrating the 25th Anniversary
of Ronald McDonald Camp “Under the Big Top”, by hanging
from the high trapeze, walking the tight rope, spinning plates,
and just enjoying their time clowning around Camp Timber Tops.
The icing on the cake was
literally put on by “Icing
Smiles”, who recreated the
circus theme with a stunning

On Friday, the entire camp gathered together to witness the
campers-turned circus performers pull off the most daring of
circus acts. Campers and counselors alike watched in utter
amazement as their peers flew through the air with the greatest
of ease. Of course, camp would not be complete without a visit
from the “Harley Guys” who once again joined the campers
for lunch and presented a large donation and brought do-rags
for everyone. The week wrapped up with one of the biggest
parties ever held at camp and a Flash Mob “Chicken Dance”
performance by the LIT’s, CIT’s, medical staff and counselors.
