On behalf of the children, families and staff of the Jubilee Family Development Center, I
hope that each of you have already begun to enjoy a very happy and blessed New Year! It is
incredible to think that 2009 marks the 10th year of operations at Jubilee! Jubilee opened its
doors in February 1999 and we have seen the seeds we planted take root and thrive. We
have seen the results of the mentoring program, the college tours and the after school tutoring program and the harvest is great. Though 2008 was a year of challenges, it was also a
year of great victories - 130 students graduated from the Nurse Aide program, 6 students
graduated from high school, 80% of students passed the Virginia Standards of Learning
Test on the first try and all students in the after school program were promoted to their next
grade.
Over the past ten years we have seen the ups and the downs and with the recent downturn
in the economy the past year has been one of the most challenging by far. Families are suffering and seeking support and services like never before but thanks to you, Jubilee continues to share in meeting their needs. You make this possible! Together we made a difference
and lives were forever changed for the better. Thank you!!!
In order to continue our success and be able to offer opportunities for a larger number of
children and families to benefit from our programs we would like to ask your help. Do you
agree that our work is life-changing? Would it be possible for you to participate in this lifechanging program with a tax-deductible gift? We are already gearing up for summer camp
but still have the remainder of this school year to consider. With your ongoing support we
will be able to continue making a difference in these difficult economic times. Youth will be
provided with mentors and tutors and stay on the path of academic success. Programs in
the New Occupational Center will be in full operation providing job training and career

PROGRAM NOTES
After School Tutoring Program Summary/Program Notes
Report cards are rolling in and so are the students for our after-school tutorial program. Mr. Park’s assistance in
math on Mondays and Wednesdays continues to be very beneficial with an average of 10 students per session receiving extensive help during his tutoring sessions. Approximately 40 students each day participate in Jubilee’s
academic programs and a majority participate in the enrichment programs currently offered after school and on
week-ends. This participation is reflected in the improvement of grades and behavior in the classroom. In keeping with our efforts to address the whole person, university students majoring in Sports Management come to the
Center once a week to address the importance of exercise, health and safety, nutrition and physical education.
In addition to academic programs, the students have numerous recreational and extra curricular opportunities.
The Girl Scouts meet once a month with plans to meet more often. Club Victory, a Bible Study activity, maintains
a weekly schedule. Our partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Virginia has carried over into
this school year with a group of 12 dedicated volunteers paired with little buddies. The students really look forward to this one-on-one time each week. New opportunities are constantly arising such as the implementation of
a weekly Science Program. This program provides students with hands on science activities in chemistry, engineering, nature, physics, air and water. Many thanks go to Danny Givens and Givens Book Store for this opportunity. None of our programs would work without our volunteers from the colleges, high schools and community.
We are thankful for their time here and that they choose Jubilee as the site for their services.

-Team Jubilee enters competition for the first time
In partnership with Jubilee, Generations Solutions’ Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Training and
Educational Center has graduated more than
130 Nurse Aides from its program. This six week
program has proved to be very successful and
maintains a waiting list for both morning and
evening classes. We are glad that we can be such
a source of support with an agency that is preparing individuals for the workforce in economic
times such as these.

students from Jubilee and the community. Prior to building the robot the
team learned the basics about mindstorms robotics, including sensors; programming software, NXT-g, ROBOLAB
or RIS; and what the robot would need in order to accomplish its tasks. They then began the task of assembly. After
completion the robot needed to operate hands-free and
would be judged during a 5-minute presentation. The Robotic Team assembled the robot of Legos and entered it in
a Regional Lego League Tournament in November. Jubilee
finished #7 among a group of 32 competitors.
Inauguration Party
-Jubilee serves as official city Celebration Site
Everything’s a party…that seems to have been the
general consensus all about the town, the state, the
nation and globe. Jubilee was no exception as on
Inauguration Day the center was designated an
official celebration site for Lynchburg residents to
join others from the community to watch history in
the making . There were lots of laughs, tears and
food as everyone gathered in front of the big
screen. The media was on hand and it was reported that Jubilee had the largest turnout of all
community centers to watch together this historic
event.
JUBILEE YOUTH IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Lemondre Watson
Jordan Holloway
Since 2002 Lemondre has participated and volunteered and
given himself to help others at Jubilee. He started at Jubilee
as an intern during the summer and has grown into an advocate for the Jubilee Center. He has also participated in
the after school tutorial program, college prep program and
stands as a member of the Jubilee Board of Directors. His
leadership mentality allowed Lemondre to evolve into a determined individual who continues to pursue his goals in
life. Lemondre’s leadership is demonstrated at his school
Jordan Holloway is a 4th grade student at Heritage Elementary School and has been with the
Jubilee Family Development Center for 3 years.
He is the son of Charlie and Sherrill Holloway
and has greatly benefited from the after school
tutorial program and recreational activities.
Presently, through our Big Buddy Program
with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia, Jordan participates in
our site-based mentoring program. His Big Brother, Charlie Owens, gives Jordan individual attention that supports
his academic activities. Jordan strives to make himself
well-rounded and achieves
this goal with the help of the
staff and interns. He has shown great improvement academically this school year and is on the
honor roll. One of Jordan’s favorite things to do
is play basketball, which he has been doing for a
local recreational league team for few years
now. Besides basketball, Jordan plays football,
and participates in drum & flag at his school.
Jordan and his family are great supporters of
Jubilee and volunteer at the annual Steeplechase at Oak Ridge and other programs here at
the center. We’re glad Jordan is with us and
are excited to help him on his path to success!

where he is the Senior Class
President and the National
Honor Society President.
He is involved in school
functions and events, and
was given the responsibility of emceeing both the fall and
winter pep-rallies. Lemondre will continue his education
in college in the fall. Owing to his calm and incisive
manner, he has become a favorite of the students and his
dedication, enthusiasm and reliability has won the admiration of our staff. He has participated in the after
school program and our 9 week summer program by
serving as an instructor during the computer camp to
more than 80 inner youth. His non-judgmental nature
allows him to interact well with young people of various
demographic groups and to relate well to the participants in our programs. He is always willing to step in
and assist students and staff in any capacity necessary in
order to give back at Jubilee, the place that has given
him so much.
Community Art project enters second phase
-Focus on racial unity, civic responsibility
Change and hope for the future seem to be hot topics these
days! Just ask local students participating in the Teen Cultural
Diversity Art Project at the Jubilee Center. This 10 week workshop on mural concept design, drawing and painting was directed by Artist Mike Twery. The second portion of the mural
was unveiled and dedicated on the day of the Presidential Inauguration and features the likeness of President Barack
Obama. This community art project embraces themes of hope,
change, and cultural inclusion. It sends a positive and uplifting
message of racial unity and civic responsibility. The goal to
provide especially young people with opportunities to gain a
better understanding of their peers from different ethnic backgrounds is ever encouraged. The mural is displayed on the
fence of Jubilee’s Bev Cosby Building. This project, winner of
the 2008 Greater Lynchburg Community Trust's Youth Service Award was funded by Wachovia Bank.
