Colorado and New Mexico Balloon Fiesta
September 25 – October 3, 2016
Day 1
Fly into Denver International Airport and tour through downtown Denver on the way to Colorado Springs including a tour
through the beautifully located US Air Force Academy (if the threat level allows). We will spend two nights in Colorado
Springs at the Drury Inn & Suites. Enjoy a complimentary light supper and drinks at the hotel or walk to one of the nearby
restaurants. Meal included: dinner
Day 2
Enjoy a ride on the Pikes Peak Cog Railroad to the top of World Famous Pikes Peak at 14,100 above sea level, one of
Colorado’s “14’ers”. Then we will have a guided tour of the red rock formations known as the Garden of the Gods where
you can enjoy lunch on your own. We will take in some of the sights of Colorado Springs, home of the US National Olympic
Committee and the Historic Broadmoor Hotel. Meals included: breakfast, light dinner
Day 3
Today we head into the center of the Rockies for our first stop, a ride through the amazing Royal Gorge Canyon on the Royal
Gorge Railroad. Back on the bus, we go up and over the golden Aspen studded mountains to one of our newest national
parks, Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Viewpoints of the Canyon reveal the spectacular geology exposed by the Gunnison
River below. Burgers and brats with all of the fixin’s will be served by our hotel, Holiday Inn Express in Montrose, Colorado,
for dinner. Meals included: breakfast, dinner
Day 4
Again we start our day early as we leave the historic farming community of Montrose, we will drive into the fantastic San
Juan Range of the Rockies to Ouray, the Switzerland of America, and over the breath taking “Million Dollar Highway” on our
way to Baker’s Park and the town of Silverton. You will have time for “end of season bargain” shopping and lunch on your
own before we board the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for the journey of a lifetime. We follow the path of
the Rio de las Animas, the Animas River, as we head through one of the most remote mountain ranges in the lower 48 states.
The scenery will have you awe struck! Upon arrival in Durango we will take the short walk to our hotel, the Durango Lodge.
The rest of the evening is yours to explore Durango and its many shops and restaurants. Meal included: breakfast
Day 5
In 1929, the caravan of cars traveling for the first time on the newly proposed “National Park to Park Highway” arrived at its
final national park, Mesa Verde. Today, you also can visit these prehistoric villages of the ancestral Puebloans. We will visit
the mesa top ruins, museum, and have a chance to walk to one of the fantastic cliff dwellings. These archaic communities
used advanced architectural technics to build the structures that remain for us to visit after several hundred years! The
evening is free for you to enjoy in Durango. Meal included: breakfast
Day 6
Travel today into the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico. We will take in the beautiful autumn scenery on the way to
Chimayo and see some of the villages that remain from the time when the Spanish ruled this area. We will also pay a visit to
the Miraculous Sanctuario de Chimayo where you can take away some of the miracle soil that has healed so many believers.
Then we will go to the world renowned Rancho de Chimayo for an included authentic New Mexican meal. No worries,
there is something that everyone can eat. We will arrive in Santa Fe, the Capitol of New Mexico in the afternoon after an
enchanting day. Our hotel is in the Old Town area, an easy walk to the historic Old Town Plaza. The Four Star Hotel El
Dorado Santa Fe hotel has restaurants and there are many nearby. Meals included: breakfast, lunch
Day 7
This morning we take a walking tour of Santa Fe. (It is no place for a 45’ bus). Along the way we will see the Palace of the
Governors, the Old Town Plaza, the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, and the miraculous Loretto Chapel. You will have free
time to visit the many museums, shops, and Indian Market before we move on to our final destination, Albuquerque. Before
going to our hotel we will visit the Pueblo Indian Cultural Center and view an Indian Dance. Get to bed early tonight-we get
up early tomorrow for Balloon Fiesta. Enjoy two nights in Drury Inn. Meals included: breakfast, light dinner
Day 8
Tour Director will advise you of departure time. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot air balloon
event in the world. The mass ascension will see between 600 and 800 hot air balloons rise into the sky over you with a riot
of color and designs. You will take many photos! You will see cows fly along with houses and bees and Darth Vadar and….
all the special shapes. You are surrounded by balloons. When the mass ascension is over we will go back to the hotel for a
quick nap and then down to Old Town for shopping and lunch and history. This evening, its back out to Balloon Fiesta Park
for dinner time on your own and the evening balloon glow where the balloons are tethered to the ground and are all lit up
at one time. Beautiful! We end our day and our journey with fireworks. (FAA controls flights depending on weather). Meals
included: breakfast both before and after Mass Ascension at hotel
Day 9
Your tour director will advise you of your departure times. Today you head for home with special memories and new friends
from your Journey West! Via Con Dios. Meal included: breakfast
