FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
HELPING THE HOMELESS
Dear Parish Family:
Last year, when Pope Francis visited the United States he met with the homeless of Washington DC. To
them (and to us!) he spoke about St. Joseph and said:
“Joseph had to face some difficult situations in his life. One of them was the time when
Mary was about to give birth, to have Jesus. The Bible tells us that, “while they were [in
Bethlehem], the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn
son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no
place for them in the inn.”
The Bible is very clear about this: there was no room for them. I can imagine Joseph,
with his wife about to have a child, with no shelter, no home, no place to stay. The Son of
God came into this world as a homeless person. The Son of God knew what it was to
start life without a roof over his head. We can imagine what Joseph must have been
thinking. How is it that the Son of God has no home? Why are we homeless, why don’t we have housing? These are
questions which many of you may ask, and do ask, every day. Like Saint Joseph, you may ask: Why are we homeless,
without a place to live? And those of us who do have a home, a roof over our heads, would also do well to ask: Why do
these, our brothers and sisters, have no place to live? Why are these brothers and sisters of ours homeless?
For the past three and a half years as a priest I have had the privilege to work with the homeless on Long
Island. In a parish where I served, we found more and more homeless coming to our parish doors and
not having enough resources to respond. In those days we worked with Suffolk County and other local
churches to meet the homeless where they were at and to support them as brothers and sisters. The response in that parish was a weekly Van Run, a Community Meal and the opening of a Thrift/Clothing
Shop.
When I arrived here in June, I was again contacted by a member of the Department of Social Services
and asked if I would be willing to be part of another process for this part of Long Island. My first answer
was no. Simply because I was involved with these issues in one parish does not mean it is something that
must be done in every parish I am in or that I have the right to ―bring it wherever I go.‖ To be honest,
my answer in June never sat well with me.
Well, they called again. I’m glad they did. With the help of Alex Finta, our Social Work Intern, we held a
meeting here with the county representatives and representatives from about 20 other churches and organizations in the local community to simply talk about the issue. The meeting was an amazing Christlike response to the poor and the vulnerable in our local communities and everyone agreed we must do
something.
You might ask, ―There are homeless here?‖ The answer from this meeting was ―You bet!‖ I have found
in my own work that the homeless are not simply those ―on the streets‖ but those who live in their cars or
move from house to house, those who work but cannot find a safe place to stay, those who raise kids and
sacrifice everything – including their home – for those children, those who are doing anything and everything they can to survive and, yes, there are many who are not doing everything necessary to help themselves.
So what is that something? I really don’t know. But I would like to talk about it with you if you’re interSt. John the Evangelist

ested. If you’re interested in being involved in some effort to reach out to the homeless of this local community, I would ask you to come to a meeting THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING, October 26 at 7:30
p.m. in the Red Barn Meeting Room (on the first floor of the Red Barn, the red building next to the
school playground). I would like to have a conversation to pray, to listen and to share ideas about what,
if anything, our parish community can do in collaboration with others. I am not organizing this meeting
with a hidden plan or a set of ideas I just want everyone to approve. I am just hoping for a good conversation.
At the end of that talk from last year, Pope Francis
said,
“Faith makes us know that God is at our side, that God is in
our midst and his presence spurs us to charity. Charity is
born of the call of a God who continues to knock on our door,
the door of all people, to invite us to love, to compassion, to
service of one another.”
The Lord is knocking. I hope we can answer and find
room in the ―inn‖ of our hearts.

REMEMBRANCE
During the month of November, we
remember in a special way our loved
ones who have died. This year, we
will be preparing a special Altar of
Remembrance in Our Lady’s Chapel
(the entrance is near the piano and
organ). Beginning November 1st, you are
invited to place a picture on the altar so
that we may remember your loved ones
and pray for each other. Please limit the
size of your photo (perhaps no larger
than 4 x 6) so that there is room for
everyone who wishes to participate.
You may place the picture in a small
frame. Please remember to write your
name and phone number on the back
of the picture. Pictures may be
dropped off at the rectory or at the
sacristy. We ask that you pick up your
picture no later than Wednesday, November 23, as our Altar of Remembrance will
be ending shortly after that.

Mass of Remembrance on All Souls Day,
Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. At
this Mass we will pray by name for all who
have died in our parish community over the
past year. All families who have celebrated
a funeral Mass at SJE in the past year are
being specially invited, and all parishioners,
whether or not they have experienced a
loss, are invited to come and join in prayer.
Following the Mass, all are welcome for
hospitality. Please consider participating in
this Mass to join together in prayerful solidarity with our brothers and sisters who
have lost a loved one in the past year.
ALL SOULS DAY
NOVENA
All Souls Day Novena envelopes are now
available throughout the Church. These
envelopes are a meaningful way for you
to have your deceased loved ones prayed
for in the Novena of Masses for All Souls
Day. Take an envelope, fill out the name
of the deceased, and return the envelope
with your donation. Envelopes may be
returned either in the collection basket or
at the rectory. Special Masses will be offered for nine (9) days throughout the
month of November for these intentions

Words of Wisdom
By Sister Ann Berendes, Director of Parish Social Ministry
These readings today can be used as a good examination of conscience. The Gospel of Luke depicts two sides of
human nature. You might say that in the first, the Pharisee, the one who is supposed to be so good, is full of himself.
He is the "The great I am" (pride); he sounds conceited, is very judgmental, arrogant, lacks compassion, and despises
those who follow Jesus. If we could describe a perfect sinner he would be it. (Paraphrased from Sr. Macrina Weiderkehr, OSB, Living With Christ, Oct.'16)
The tax collector, on the other hand, is devoid of self. He is repentant, knows his faults, and is filled with humility. He knows that he needs God's mercy. Let's face it. We would all like to be perfect but we know we are not. We are
aware of many of our faults (if not, someone will surely point them out to us); yet, we know that we all have some
qualities of both the sinner and the saint in us. Let me give you an example.
Once, while I was still teaching, I called a seventh grade boy's mother to see if she'd mind if I kept him after
school. I knew her and I knew the boy was just what I called an "imp." He was not a bad kid; being one of 10 children
sometimes tells us that often an little more attention is needed to let us adults know that he is around. That didn't excuse his need for a bit more discipline. As a punishment I made him sit for the hour, fold a piece of loose-leaf lengthwise to make two columns. The one column was to be a list of his worst qualities; the second, his best qualities. At the
end of the hour I called him up and asked him what he had learned from the assignment. His answer was, "I have a lot
more good in me than bad." My response was, "Don't ever forget that!" I sent him off to his grandmother's home
where I knew she'd be waiting with milk and cookies. I never had another problem with him.
The first reading reminds us that God is a God who is just and has no favorites. Those who serve him willingly
will be heard. The prayer of the humble will not go unheard—just be patient. God answers us in the way that will be
beneficial to us and therefore will make us pleasing to him.
Paul reminds us of how he changed from a persecutor of Christians to a champion for Christ. As a result, he
had great sufferings, but he "kept the faith and finished the race after competing well." Paul says that because of all of
his suffering for Christ that "the Lord will rescue me . . . and bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom." That is what we
all want, isn't it? We are followers of a crucified Christ; as he suffered, so must we to achieve our heavenly reward.
Outreach
We have been signing up those who need help for the holidays. If you are planning to donate food to the Pantry, it is best to check with us ASAP as to what you plan to donate as we also purchase food. Last year we were quite
overstocked with some items and had too few of other items. If you can't stop by the Pantry on Monday night or
Thursday afternoon, let us know in the Outreach Office and we will convey the message.
Many, many thanks to the Girl Scouts for their great contribution of food last Saturday. That was a huge chunk
of their time and energy on a beautiful Saturday! God bless them and their leaders.
Thank you also for our MARVELOUS volunteers in the Outreach for all the work for our "Gigantic Sale" also
on Saturday. We did quite well making over $2250 for the Outreach from all the donations many of you have you
have given us.
God bless you for all that you give in time, treasure and talent!

LITURGICAL MEMORIALS
A beautiful way to remember a loved one is a memorial for our Church. Not only does it give some
honor to one we love—living or deceased– it also
helps St. John’s with the expenses related to our
parish’s liturgy and worship.
Baptism incorporates us into Christ and forms us into
God’s people.
There are many opportunities for memorials including the Bread and
Wine, Altar Candle, and
Saints’ Devotional Candles (coming soon). For
