IN 2009, GLENN RESIDENT SCOTT WALL
relocated his mobile lab testing service—
New Age/Landmark Inc.—from Benton
Harbor to South Haven, bringing with it
the company’s bright future.
“We believe in a sustainable
community and part of that is to bring
the business we do to our community,”
he said.
Wall’s environmental testing
company’s clients include the U.S.
Department of Defense, Department of
Energy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and
the State of Michigan. He expects the
company’s international division to grow
up to 200 percent in the next five years,
generating new jobs.
Charles Spreitzer relocated his custom
woodworking business, My Grain, Inc., to
South Haven last year from Chicago. He
continues to service Illinois clients, while
expanding his customer base in
Southwest Michigan. Like other area
residents, his wife Gretchen Spreitzer, a
financial trader, finds that modern
technology allows her to enjoy the area’s
enviable lifestyle while doing business
beyond community borders.
The couple anticipated the community
would offer a supportive business
climate, but underestimated the strength
of its economic diversity.

Business Resource & Counseling for Entrepreneurs (BRACE) encourages
entrepreneurship and grassroots economic development by providing resources
and vital tools to the small business sector. Whether thinking about starting a

Michigan State University’s Creating Entrepreneurial Communities Program,

“I didn’t realize this was such a great
area for agriculture,” Spreitzer said. “The
amount of products grown here is
amazing.”
Known as the Blueberry Capital of the
World, blueberries infuse millions into
the regional economy. A major
agriculture player, Van Buren County has
more fruit acreage than any other county
in Michigan and also produces grapes,
tart cherries and more.
In this scenic beachtown, the
threesome of agriculture, manufacturing
and tourism creates a solid economic
base. Manufacturing ranges from
horticulture plastics, pharmaceutical
chemicals to fire trucks. At the I-196
Business Park, economic developers are
thinking outside the box to fill three
remaining sites in 2010 by meeting
needs of the bustling agriculture

EDUCATIONAL NETWORK SUPPORTS DIVERSE CAREER GOALS
“I CAN SEE THE POWER OF EDUCATION IN OUR
community. We are fortunate that area
students have lifelong learning
opportunities and a strong pipeline to
get career training or graduate from one
of our universities,” said Janice Varney,
Executive Dean of Lake Michigan
College-South Haven. Varney also shares
her expertise with the community as the
Chamber’s Board Chair and serves on a
number of additional boards and
committees.
Educational partnerships provide
students of all ages a multiplicity of
career advantages. Junior and senior high
school students benefit from the ability
to take college-credit courses at Lake
Michigan College-South Haven (LMC)
while earning their high school diplomas.
Students take more than 500 credit hours
each year, saving more than $100,000 in
college tuition costs. Van Buren
Technology Center provides junior and
senior high students opportunities to
gain workforce skills through School to
Work, co-op, clinicals and internship
programs.
Those pursuing college degrees find
opportunities close to home at LMC and
its 50 programs, as well as through the
community college’s partnerships with
Western Michigan University and Grand
Valley State University.

goals,” said Tom Rummel, insurance
professional at Hardt Insurance. “The
Chamber pools what we need to
accomplish as a community.”
Rummel, his wife, Donna, and their two
boys decided to make South Haven their
home in 2007 and relocated from the
Lansing area. Rummel quickly assumed
the mantel of community service,
volunteering for a multitude of
Chamber programs.
“I’ve been involved with Chambers twice
the size,” he said. “For a chamber of this
size, we have a lot to offer.”

value-added service to members,
developing statewide relationships to
better the local business environment and
provide ever greater opportunities to
become involved in educational and
advocacy efforts on multiple platforms.
“Every time I go, I have a basket full of
questions and there always seems to be
someone there to answer them,” said
Cindy Compton of Compton Inc., a family
business since 1946. Compton is actively
involved in numerous Chamber
programs. As a busy business
owner with several interests, she
appreciates the opportunity to
connect to relevant business
services without leaving town.

Shoreline Wellness & Rehabilitation
Center, a regional center for occupational
health, orthopedics, rehabilitation and
physical fitness, has become a
cornerstone of the area’s healthcare since
opening its $8.3 million facility in 2007.
“It’s the best kept secret in South
Haven,” said transplant Kevin Whiteford, a
nationally-known financial tax expert who
is building a new office in South Haven. “I
think if people knew what was there they
would have to double the facility.”
Whiteford and his wife Mary, a
registered nurse, relocated to South
Haven from the Chicago area two years
ago. They spent eight years researching
West Michigan towns before selecting and
settling their family and calling South
Haven home.
Like other residents, the Whitefords
enjoy the benefits of having a local
hospital offering the “Right Care. Right
Here” with a full gamut of primary health
services including pediatric care, a 24hour emergency department,
gynecological and obstetrics services,
general surgery and a strong orthopedic
department that draws people from
throughout the region. Its leadership in
preventive care is evidenced by the
Wellness Center’s focus on education,
nutrition, exercise and lifelong fitness.
More than 2,500 people are getting and
staying fit with the assistance of the
center’s certified trainers, nutrition
counselors, classes, and a full spectrum of
state-of-the art exercise equipment. A
kid’s summer camp gets young people
moving, while adults up to the age of 90
participate in classes to maintain mobility,
proving you’re never too old or too young
to improve your health. G

future to a place capable of inspiring
rewarding lifestyles. For them, South
Haven is a natural fit—a rare place where
waterways, beaches and woods provide
an exciting combination of year-round
recreation.
South Haven Mayor, Bob Burr,
discovered the area’s natural
charms in the 1970s. After a
stint as a summer resident,
he moved to the city.

“We have very good salmon, trout and
perch fishing,” the avid angler said. “I
ended up in South Haven to support my
fishing habit!”
South Haven’s recreational port
sustains a lively charter fishing industry,
attracting scores of anglers to its
acclaimed fisheries and supporting a
multi-million dollar industry. The
welcoming harbor, providing 1,250
transient and seasonal slips,
accommodates a variety of vessels from
kayaks to tall ships.
The Bangor/South Haven Heritage
Water Trail provides adventures along the
Black River with educational signage
along the canoe/kayak trail.
On land, the Kal-Haven Trail attracts
90,000 hikers and bikers each year to its
pathways. This 34-mile trail traverses
between South Haven and Kalamazoo,
winding through scenic countryside and
the communities of Grand Junction,
Bloomingdale, Gobles and Kendall.
During winter months, the 10-foot wide
trail system provides exhilarating
adventures for cross-country skiers,
snowshoers and snowmobilers. The Van
Buren Trail covers 15 miles and runs
between South Haven and Hartford. Plans
call for extending the two trails to
downtown South Haven, as well as

developing a 20-mile bicycle trail to
Saugatuck.
With Michigan boasting of one of the
most highly-developed trail systems in
the nation, the new west coast trail
connections will link South Haven to trail
destinations around the state. The threeway connection supports growing
interest in biking.
Youth and adult athletes and their fans
will soon enjoy the benefits of the $1.5
million South Haven Area Regional Park
(SHARP). Development is underway for
soccer and football fields, baseball/
softball diamonds, tournaments, tennis
courts, jogging path and a playground at
a 96-acre site. SHARP will host games
and tournaments, drawing players and
fans from throughout the region,
generating new economic activity as well
as a host of recreational options.
“It’s an area our community can grow,”
said Jill Peters, volunteer. “Recreation
forms the community and brings families
together.”
Jill and her husband Shane, a South
Haven native and current high school
principal, moved to the community with
their three children in 2007.
“We want the community to know we
have an open door,” she said. “We’re
going to work hard to make it a better
place to live.” G
