Tishre, we say hello to the
Rabbi William Siemers
month of Cheshvan, or Mar
Cheshvan. It is the eighth
month of the lunar calendar, and it is distinguished
from the other months of the year in that there are absolutely no holidays – major or minor – to be found
within. The long form of the name is from the Akkadian warch sheman, which would be yareach shemini
in Hebrew, and means simply the eighth month. But
we didn’t as a people always have Akkadian diction(Continued on page 2)

holiday. I particularly like the idea of “Mr.
Cheshvan,” and I think it is useful as a reminder that the rhythms of daily Jewish
life, apart from the holidays, are a significant source of meaning and strength. Our
endless task of expanding the boundaries
of holiness is not less urgent on a cloudy
November morning than it is at Kol Nidre.
Empty boxes on the calendar are a blessing when they remind us that time and
space are for us to fill. Welcome, Mr.

Some say that it is the lack of holidays, as
well as the memory of unpleasant things
that fell during Cheshvan (such as the
flood), which accounts for the adjective

through the lens of modern Hebrew,
sounds like “Mr. Cheshvan”, as though the
month was in some manner more formal
than the eleven months which we seem to
know on a first-name basis. Cheshvan receives the honorific as compensation for
being the one month of the year without a

Social Hall's glass cases. Kiddush cups, glass platters, Shabbat To Go, kipot, Seder and matzoh
plates, menorahs, children's books and toys, cookbooks, and candle sticks are all there.
Annette Grubman and Phyllis Van Dyne operate the Temple's Shop, acquiring new items several times a year. These dedicated ladies will also fill special orders; if you see something you'd like,

Diane Richter to be Honored
Diane Richter has been named Love of a Lifetime by the Pioneer Chapter of Suffolk Region Hadassah. She will receive the award at a luncheon on Monday, November 14, 2011, held at Temple Isaiah in Stony Brook. If you would like to join
us, the cost for luncheon is $25, due by October 23rd. Doors will open at 9:30 AM
for boutiques, with luncheon at 10:45. For more info contact Sheila Muller at 631722-4711.
At the same luncheon, Hadassah will honor our youth group, Shalom Teens, with
their Myrtle Wreath Award.

As we move into 5772, we continue to need our membership and friends to
preserve the health and well-being of our beloved temple. It is a tradition in
congregations to establish a Kol Nidre Appeal Fund; at Temple Israel this
fund is vital to help supplement the dues and thus cover our operating expenses. Therefore, we
ask each one of you, if you have not already donated, to be as generous as possible, in order that
our temple may continue to meet the growing needs of the Jewish community.

Thoughts from a Congregant

A clear voice resounded in the bright sunlight filtering through the stained glass
windows of our newly-refurbished sanctuary. Rabbi Siemers joined in harmony, balancing the higher cantorial notes of Cantress Wagner. I was taken back to my youth,
when I listened to the cantor chant with European accent and inflection. He would lift
up his hands and plead to the Lord for our repentance and salvation for another year.
I have mixed feelings about my aging. I am uncomfortable about becoming
somewhat “germ-phobic” and not wanting to shake people’s hands. On the other hand,
I am able to see certain things more clearly and appreciate the work that others are doing for me.
I would like to reflect on our recent High Holy Days celebration at Temple Israel
of Riverhead. There are many people who have worked very hard “behind the scenes”
to make our holiday observances meaningful and seamless. I am unable to name them
all, but I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. I would like to thank Rabbi
Siemers and Cantress Wagner for what seemed like a superhuman effort of dovining for
so many hours, most of which were done standing! They chanted clearly with emotion,
and smiles on their faces. Their singing reflected a true labor of love.
I am very thankful to Harley Abrams, Lisa Israel, and Andrew Gordon, for their
Haftorah chanting. We are very fortunate to have members who are knowledgeable and
willing to take up this challenge. They do it graciously and masterfully. Thanks go to
Annette Grubman and Karen Sulitzer for reading the Yiskor names, and to Annette for
her work on the service in general. Thanks go out to the congregants who joined in
with oral readings and other “honors.” I want to extend a special thank you to Lisa Israel, Barbara Smith, and Jaime Siegel for adding a youthful, positive, “can-do” personality to our synagogue. I must say that, after praying for almost 3 hours on a Sabbath, I
barely have enough strength to make it down to the fine kiddush which Jaime has overseen. Thanks again, Jamie, for making sure we are all well-fed.
Barbara Smith spoke about our “Temple Family.” This tied in with the Rabbi’s
sermon about coming to the synagogue as a direct expression of being Jewish. I have

belonged to Temple Israel since 1980, and I feel fortunate to have known many of the
“old timers.” However, until the past 15 years or so, I have always felt I was “just a
congregant,” but not really a family member. This is not so any longer. This feeling
comes with showing up and “being counted” as a functioning member of the synagogue. I now feel that I truly am a “family member,” and am accepted with my interests and eccentricities. It is a wonderful feeling to know that you “have a home here.”
These High Holy Days had added meaning for me in that I held my departed
brother Lenny in my hands as I prayed! Figuratively, Lenny was with me over the
many hours, because his name was inscribed on the nameplate of the new prayer book
which I held. This was a very special event for me.
The High Holy Day Service concluded on an unusual and awe-inspiring note
with the chanting of Havdalah by colorful glowstick light! Very cool, and very different! Just the way my Rabbi Bill Siemers likes it to be. Many thanks again to all for a
wonderful High Holidays and for making our temple a family!
Footnote: Jaime, Steve Rosmarin, and I were talking to Cantress Wagner at the
Tashlich service, raving about a PBS program which we had seen spotlighting a worldfamous cantor from N.Y.C., named Mendelson. He is a large man, much like Rabbi
Gerlitz, who lives and breathes cantoring. His passion is contagious. Cantress Wagner
said that she knows this all too well, since he was her teacher for two years when she
was in training! His expression and passion for cantoring has carried forth in her song.
Cantress Wagner is a very special person. Many congregants I have spoken with feel
we should secure her services for next year as soon as possible, before she takes a job
elsewhere and we miss out.

Shalom Teens to be Honored
The Shalom Teens will be receiving the Myrtle Wreath award at the Pioneer Chapter of

of Broken Glass. This event will take place at Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport on Sunday, Nov 6, 2011 at 1:30 PM.

Leaves on the Tree of Life
An engraved leaf on the lovely Tree of
Life which graces our Social Hall is a
joyous reminder of a Bat or Bar Mitzvah, an anniversary, a wedding, or a
special birthday, and also a fitting tribute to the memory of a loved one. The
cost of a leaf is $180. For further information, please contact Phyllis

Kosher Food For Our Events
Beach Bakery in Westhampton Beach is a kosher, dairy bakery all
year, except during the summer, when pareve items are offered, also.
Bagel Patch, in Patchogue, frequently provides the food for our special events. The Best Yet Market on Route 58 carries pareve cookies
and cakes. BJ’s and Costco also have pareve cookies in their bakeries, and the Riverhead Waldbaum’s bakery is kosher.
