EULOGY
Norris Scatliffe affectionately called Poncho or Tapunchie was born on
January15th 1943 to the late Anesta Francis and Luther Scatliffe. He was
faithful, loving, supportive, and dedicated to his parents and siblings and the
peacemaker of the family.
His early education began at the St. Georges School and ended at the Road
Town Elementary school. On leaving school, he joined the Government
Service, first as a messenger and later as a Road Technician under the
supervision of his late uncle Waiter James Francis. Norris was a very
dedicated worker who never stayed away from work. He was respected by
his supervisor and eo-workers and would always encourage them to do the
right thing - stop drinking if they did, take care of their families and live for
Christ. He followed in his uncle's footsteps and became Road Foreman, a
position he held until his retirement. Although he loved his work, it was not
without challenges. I do recall an incident when Poncho almost lost his life
in a vehicular accident involving a PWD truck -the fear and then relief of
his parents when they learned that he had escaped with his life.
As a young man, Norris met the love of his life Annie Phillip and the union
produced one son- Sirron Scatliffe which is Norris spelt backwards. Norris
loved his son and was faithful, in supporting and encouraging him with his
education and was delighted with his employment at PWD as a drafts man.
He was the proud grand father of two girls Cherrelle and Cheniah. The grand
children were his joy, love and inspiration. He enjoyed spending time with
them and found it very funny when his youngest would move his wheel
chair away from him and tell him to get up and walk. He did all he could to
ensure that they would be well provided for even when he is no longer here.
Norris was a sports enthusiast. He was a good runner and jumper. He
played cricket and softball and was a member of the Astros softball team.

He loved to travel and did so extensively. He also loved dressing-up and
attending the various social functions of the day- Gracy's, Springette by the
sea, The Road Town Community Center, the Long School, Stone Haven,
Beach club Terrace etc. But, this all stopped when Norris gave his heart to
Christ. He never looked back.
Norris was a member of the Positive Action Movement. He received a
medal for his contribution to the movement and the Noel Lloyd's statue
bears his name. His favourite flower was the hibiscus flower and on his
daily walks, he would always return with a hibiscus flower. His love for this
flower was so great, that he had an artist paint one on the front of his home.
Norris was a dedicated Christian and loved to read his bible and listen to the
gospel on radio. As a matter of fact, his radio dial is cemented to the gospel
station he listened to. I recall once attempting to change the dial. While the
knob spun, the dial remained on the station he had always listened to for
years. I suggested the purchase of a new one, but he loved his old radio.
As a Christian, he never missed the opportunity to preach the word of God.
As a matter of fact, many home visits became bible study sessions. (familiar
bible verses were written on the walls and furniture). He was a regular
attendant of many out-door church tent meetings. He also visited the
hospital regularly, particularly on Sunday afternoons to share the Good
News with the patients and staff alike. Another regular stop spot was the
Sunday Morning Well, where he would stop by to chat and encourage the
boys to turn their lives over to Christ.
Later in life, Norris experienced many health challenges and subsequent
complications. But despite his challenges, he remained courageous. It is
impossible to think of Poncho without his soft, welcoming smile. His last
visit to the ER was on Tuesday 26th August, when he took his last breath and
went to his eternal rest.
Poncho remained resolute in his walk with God until he took his last breath.
And this is the legacy he has left behind for his son, grandchildren,~and
family members: the example and fruit of a faithful walk with God once he
found the way, and a loving desire to see them all following Christ on the
same path. May light perpetual shine on him and may his soul rest in peace
until that great resurrection we have been promised that those who die in the
lord shall rise again.
