St. Katharine Drexel Mission Statement
To advance the mission of Jesus through
prayer, service and sharing.
FR. JERRY’S CORNER
[email protected]
Next weekend is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church, and we will be having the annual collection for Our Own
Needs. The four major beneficiaries represented in this collection are:
• Catholic University of America: The national university of the Catholic Church is located in Washington, D.C. More than 4,000
students directly receive scholarship aid from this Collection, including many form our Diocese.
• Catholic Communications Campaign: This Collection communicates the Good News through Catholic social media such as
through podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our Diocese.
• Catholic Home Missions Appeal: Supports dioceses in the U.S. and its territories that are unable to offer their people the basic pastoral ministries of word, worship, and service without outside help. It supports evangelization activities, religious education, ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters, brothers, lay people and poor parishes across the country.
• Black and Native American Mission: Supports pastoral ministry, Catholic schools and religious education programs to Black and
Native American evangelization programs where these communities exist. In our Diocese, we annually receive a grant from this
collection to assist parishes in Neopit and Keshena in their outreach and service to the Menominee Indian Tribe.
To honor the 15th Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the 12th Anniversary of the “Catechism of the Catholic
Church,” Pope Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith. The goal is to strengthen the faith of Catholics and draw the world to
faith by our example. Our Bishop David Ricken is the Chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. He offers “10 Ways Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith.”
One of the ways Catholics can live the Year of Faith is to study the Catechism. Published exactly 30 years after the start of
the Council, the “Catechism of the Catholic Church”, covers the beliefs, moral teachings, prayer and sacraments of the Catholic Church
in one volume. It’s a resource for growing in understanding of the faith. Another helpful resource is the U.S. Catholic Catechism for
Adults (USCCA).
In this Year of Faith, I invite our grade school, middle school, and high school students to explore our faith through art. They
are invited to make a poster based on a religious theme. The theme for May is “Mary” and is due May 25. The theme for June is
“Saints” and is due June 29. Their poster qualifies them for a drawing to win one of ten $5 gift cards from Culvers. May the Year of
Faith bring forth images of Faith.
There are many things you can do during this Year of Faith to renew, strengthen and build the gift of faith God has planted
deep within us. These are just a few suggestions:
• Prayer – The 13th Station of the Cross: Jesus is Taken Down From the Cross – Lord, may I always play my best in sports and
in life. When I win, may I be humble; when I lose, may I find the gain in my defeats.
• Spiritual Reading – Read John 20:19-23
On the weekend of May 18-19 we will be having our annual election for our Treasurer-Trustee, but we will also be looking for
volunteers to serve on the Finance Council, Pastoral Council, Buildings & Grounds Committee, Worship, Faith Formation Committee,
Cemetery Committee, Stewardship Committee, and Worship Committee. I invite you to first pray that people may respond to God’s call
to service in a particular committee, and secondly prayerfully consider joining one of these committees. If you are interested in becoming a member of any one of these committees contact Fr. Jerry at either [email protected] or 766-1445. Consider advancing the
mission of Jesus in a new way.
Peace,
Fr. Jerry

The Ascension
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus spends
&
40 days after his resurrection
inistry
before ascending and sending
from Donna the Holy Spirit. These forty
days is probably symbolic of
[email protected]
Jesus’ forty day sojourn in the
desert prior to beginning his public ministry. During these
forty days, Jesus was preparing the disciples for their
ministry of witnessing to all nations. The number is
symbolic: their preparation was adequate or complete,
surely brought to a climax on Pentecost with the sending
of the Holy Spirit.

Traveling Bags This year in Faith Formation
grades 1, 3, 4 & 5, we sent home a themed bag
(Traveling Bag) for children to share and learn
with their families.
• Grade 5 Noah reflected on Mark’s story of the Risen
Christ: It reminded us that Easter is more than finding
eggs, it’s that Jesus was raised into heaven.
• Grade 4 After reading a book of the saints, Quinten
wrote this prayer: Dear St. Veronica, Thank you for
wiping Lord Jesus Christ’s face with your veil. Please
give me courage to help someone in need. Amen.
Faith Formation Registration is underway. Forms are
located at the entrances of our churches and on our parish
website under GIFT faith formation. Families returning
registrations with $50 down payment before June 10 will
receive a $20 discount on tuition. Financial assistance is
available. Contact Jean at the Faith Formation Office
766-5997.
Baptism Follow-up
It is crucial that we support and encourage
young parents in their Catholic faith. One way
to do this is to reach out to them at the milestone moments of their lives - like the Baptism
of their children. Can you help?
We are in need of a volunteer who will organize the mailings and manage the gift packages each month. Please consider this ministry to our young families. If you can help,
contact Kate Haen or Linda Lamers at the parish Elizabeth
Ministry office, 766-1445.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms! Please
remember in your prayers those mothers that are deceased,
moms living with stress and illness, and those moms
raising their children to be good followers of Christ.
While we are in the prayer mode, let's pray for all moms
because soon enough the children will learn we are flawed
and can use all the prayer we can get!!
