Celebrating Catherine O’Brian!
C
atherine O’Brian is an inspiration to us all. She
has been nurturing arts opportunities across
New Hampshire for artists, teachers, students,
and communities her entire career as the Arts in
Education Coordinator, and more recently as the
grant coordinator for Arts in Health Initiatives at the
NH State Council on the Arts. This edition of the
Dandelion is dedicated to her for her many years of
state service. Catherine will be investigating her own
inspiring opportunities as she enjoys the splendors of
the season with her retirement. Catherine will remain
active in the arts scene in New Hampshire and with
the NH Arts Learning Network. Thank you, Catherine,
for your dedication, vision, inspiration and hard
work. Your impact on arts in education in our state is
immeasurable!
A Note from Catherine
Dear NH Arts Learning Network Friends and
Colleagues,
I retired from the NH State Council on the Arts on May 31st. After close to 23 years, the time
has come for me to explore and enjoy other aspects of my life. My husband and I hope to
travel, and to enjoy our home life in South Sutton and our six grandchildren. I hope to give
more time to my poetry, writing and all of the arts, and also look forward to more time for
walking, swimming and being outdoors.
I have been honored to serve in this amazing position, at the intersection of arts, learning and
creative youth development, working with artists, arts educators, youth, schools, plus arts
and social services organizations. I have learned so much from all of you in this beautiful,
inspiring work. Thank you for the trust you have put in my hands, for sharing your own work,
the arts work of your students -- and your lives – with me, and for allowing me to join you on
some part of your arts journey.
Please know that the NH State Council on the Arts
will continue to value and support Arts in Education
and Creative Youth development. I have the utmost
confidence in my team and wonderful colleagues at
the Arts Council and the NH Arts Learning Network. I
ask you to continue your advocacy work, supporting our
vital, valuable arts community, and always celebrate
the arts! I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes,
from Toni Morrison’s Sula, that says it all.
With appreciation for all you do,
Catherine O’Brian

“Had she paints, or clay,
or knew the discipline of the dance,
or strings;
had she anything to engage
her tremendous curiosity
and her gift for metaphor,
she might have exchanged
the restlessness and preoccupation
with whim for an activity that provided
her with all she yearned for.
And like any artist with no art form,
she became dangerous.”

“Inspiring Opportunities”
New Hampshire Congressional
District Award Winner
Greetings from the NH Arts Learning Network!
Inspiring Your Opportunities
Summer months take on many shapes, especially for educators, whose Monday-throughFriday routine changes as one academic year comes to an end and another comes into view.
Summer can be a time for professional growth, for catching up on reading that found its way
to the corner of our desks, for traveling, writing poems, painting or sculpting, enjoying music,
performing, composing, or collaborating on productions. Many of us continue to teach over
the summer or work a second job or care for family members.
For each of us, especially in New England, where the seasons are clear markers of time,
summer takes on its own meaning. We hope this edition of the Dandelion provides a spark
of inspiration, a link to an interesting read, a connection to a summer opportunity, or simply
a moment to contemplate Richard Ward’s award-winning “Inspiring Opportunities” (left). We
wish you all the best possible summer you can imagine!
Advocacy
Richard Ward, a junior at
Merrimack Valley High School
and resident of Boscawen, won
the art competition for the 2nd
Congressional District of New
Hampshire. His graphite drawing, “Inspiring Opportunities,”
depicts a young woman looking
off into the distance, toward her
inspirations and opportunities.
From Richard’s Artist Statement:
“I started taking graphite portrait drawing seriously at the
start of High School... After doing so many small portraits with
so much detail, I got inspired to
work on a larger scale. I thought,
‘just imagine how much detail
I could put on a bigger piece of
paper, almost limitless on what
I can express with that,’ and
that’s how ‘Inspiring Opportunities’ began. I plan on taking
what I learned from that piece
to make even stronger portraits.
I’m super excited to get started
on my next piece after my trip
to DC!”

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Arts Education Resource
The book Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the Classroom includes a chapter on the value of and connection to the arts. The chapter was co-written by VSA and CAST staff. UDL, a set

for learning so that all students can be engaged and successful. The writers illustrate how
arts education fits in with the UDL framework because it gives students a range of choices for
engaging with content and demonstrating their abilities, knowledge, and understanding. The
authors use examples from visual arts, dance, and music to show how the arts contribute to
inclusive classrooms and give students flexibility in how they learn. The book is part of Guilford
