Cuticle
The cuticle is the outermost layer of hair,
protecting the inner structure with a series of
fine scales facing upwards and away from the
root. The cuticle is made up of approximately
8–10 layers, however this can vary due to wear
and tear and also ethnicity.

The cortex determines most of the hair’s
physical characteristics including color

General Color Theory
(determined by pigments), strength, elasticity
and direction and type of growth. It makes
up 75–90% of the bulk of hair and comprises
hundreds of tiny macrofibrils resembling tubes
or straws held together by keratin fibres.
Medulla
The medulla is the marrow of the hair.
In some fine hair types the medulla is not
present at all. The medulla has no bearing
on the form process.

The cuticle normally has approximately ten
layers of cells. In damaged hair these often
degrade, resulting in fewer layers, weakening
the hair itself and reducing the layer of
protection surrounding the cortex. Damaged
cuticles spread out and expand, leaving the
cortex exposed, destabilised and requiring
treatment. Damaged hair may look dull and flat,
dry, stiff and rough to touch, require longer
drying times, have split ends and break easily.

An International Level system is used to
measure color depth and is graded from level 1
(black) through to level 10 (light blonde)
When going lighter in color, certain natural
tones called undertones will be apparent. These
are important to identify when analysing
hair color during a consultation, as the primary
undertone will influence final hair color.
The color tone is mainly influenced by
Pheomelanin (a pigment type). The size
of the smallest pigment, pheomelanin, can
determine its color. In its largest form
pheomelanin appears red, however as it is
reduced it takes on first an orange tone, then
a yellow tone. Combined with the pigment
Eumelanin which appears grey to brown they
result in an natural shade.

The color depth is determined by the quantity
of melanins found within the hair: more
melanins create darker hair and fewer pigments
create lighter hair. The pigment eumelanin
has most effect due to its brown to black color.
It is the larger pigment and is also broken down
more easily.

Natural hair color
Bleaching lightens the hair color by reducing
natural pigments and dissolving artificial
pigments. It requires H2O2.
Oxidative Tints deposit permanent color
within the cortex. Red, blue & yellow pigments
develop into the final color. It is possible
to lighten or darken and it also requires H2O2.
It is possible to cover up to 100% white hair.
Damaging influences include:
— UV and visible light
— Salt and chlorine water
— Humidity
— Mechanical influence of styling
— Chemical influence of coloring,
bleaching or perm

Determine natural hair color:
— use natural color strands from color chart
— if you are not sure choose darker color
Determine color direction:
— use fashion color strands from color chart
— clarify the color from roots, length and ends
Determine artificial color in hair:
— if yes be aware of the the rule:
“You can not lighten color with color”

— you can only color equal or darker colors
— you bleach the hair and use also lighter

— Subtractive Color (objects reflect light, light is
influenced by object properties, pigment in
hair is a coloring agent)
Absorption & Reflection
— What happens to absorbed color?

Determine white hair percentage:
— white hair percentage is less than 50%:

— Porous: use curl restructioning spritz
conditioner before coloring
— Normal: color as usual
— Resistive: use 00, 03, 04, 30, 60, 80
Determine scalp and skin condition
(check for damage or disorders):
— if scalp is sensible or dry, always use NN2
Color Consultation
The characteristics of the hair, eyes and skin
determine color type; this is based on color
tone and color depth.
Color tone is divided into three categories:
warm, neutral, cool
Color depth is also divided into
three categories:
light, medium, dark
Determine hair diameter (thick/normal/fine):
— Fine: use color half tone depth lighter
— Normal: use color you have chosen
— Thick: use color half tone darker or 00, 03, 04,

The Profession numbering system
is easy to follow, consisting of a combination
of 2 or 3 of the numbers shown (above):
— The first number represents the depth
of the shade.
— The second number (the first after a decimal
point) indicates the primary tone/reflect.
— The third number (second after the point)
indicates a softer, less visible, back-up tone.
— When the number ‘0’ is used it means
natural/no tone.
— 7.0 = medium blonde
— 7.03 = medium blonde natural gold

GENERAL MIXING
AND REMOVAL TIPS
The following part provides useful information and tips
concerning removal, virgin hair coloring, re-growth
coloring, coloring porous hair and color correction.
NATURAL
& ESSENTIALS
Comprehensive collection of colors and naturals for
coverage of white; with added tones for greater color choice.
This category includes the essential color ‘tool’ for every colorist,
Creator shades, to give a personalized result to any color.
— For most application mix equal
quantities of the appropriate Developer
with PCC Color Cream (30 ml + 30 ml).
— When using Profession Blonde
mix double quantity of Developer
(30 ml + 60 ml)
— If hair is extremely greasy or has an
abnormal presence of styling products,
should the hair be gently shampooed
and dried prior to application.
Removal
Add a little warm water and massage color from
the hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly. Gentle
shampoo using Innova Color shampoo and
finish using Innova conditioner or treatment.

Virgin hair coloring
Always apply PCC to dry, unwashed hair.
Apply the color evenly to the mid-lengths and
ends of the hair. Start the application at the
nape area leaving 2 cm of hair at the root area
without color. Develop for 10 minutes. Apply
remaining color to the root area after this time.
Leave to develop for a further 30 minutes (total
development time 40 minutes)
Re-growth coloring
Apply your color to the root area only.
Leave to develop for 20–25 minutes.
Apply the color through the lengths and ends.
Leave to develop for 5–10 minutes.
General color application tips
— Apply avoiding contact with scalp
— Always use brush parallel to the scalp
— Just deposit bleaching mixing
— Never scratch scalp with the brush
— Always clean any leaking of product on skin
— No product on and behind ears
— No product on nape area

— Work in a ventilated room
— Mix only carefully following instructions
— Never apply on damaged or itchy scalp
— Always perform a skin test before application
Instructions how to color and
treat porous hair
Care in the context of coloring hair usually
refers to condition of the hair. Chemical
over-processing or sun exposure can result in
hair that is over-porous, dry and brittle, and
lacking elasticity. Porous hair will absorb color
more quickly as the cuticle layer is open, thus
exposing the inner cortex. If normal color
processing takes place, the result will be darker
and more intense than the intended shade.
When a fashion shade is used, porous hair can
lead to a less intensive result. In this case a
pre-pigment treatment is recommended. It is
possible, with experience, to adjust the mix of
coloring chemicals to compensate for porous
hair, however it is more advisable to treat hair
with care products in order to improve hair
quality prior to a color treatment.
Color Correction
When a color correction becomes necessary
or is requested, one important area is how to
achieve the desired target color.
There are three corrective procedures
that can be applied to hair:
— Changing the tone.
— Lightening the hair.
— Darkening the hair.
Once the hair has been analysed you will
need to decide which of these procedures to
use. It may be that all three are necessary. For
example: If hair is too light, restore color. If it
is too dark, remove color and if it is the wrong
tone, neutralize or cleanse the color.

When to use:
Creators can be added to Profession shades to further intensify color
vibrancy or neutralize unwanted tone.
How to use:
Using the rule of 12, your chosen Creator should be added to a tube of
Profession in centimetres. Deduct the depth of your chosen shade
from 12 to give the quantity (cm) of Creator needed e.g. chosen shade
5.3, 5 = depth .3 = gold >> 12 – 5 = 7. Therefore, add 7 cm of Gold Creator,
e.g. 60 ml 5.3 + 7 cm 0.33 + 60 ml Profession Developer.
Development time:
Develop for 30 minutes. Time the development
from the final application of color.
100 Creator Natural:
the flexibility to achieve a wide range of color effects:
Color Booster:
To give a lighter result up to two depths, mix ½ tube 100 Creator Natural
+ ½ tube Profession or ¼ tube 100 Creator Natural + ¾ tube Profession
depending on the depth of the natural base.
Reduce Tones:
100 can be added to any Profession shade in cms (follow rule of 12)
to reduce strength of a tone.
Use to lighten dark hair before re-coloring (pre-lift): When you require
2–3 levels of lift on very dark bases, mix 100 1:1 with Profession Cream
Developer 6% or 9% depending on the depth of the natural base.
Creators can be used in excess of this rule to achieve even greater tone
intensity. If using more than ¼ tube of Creator (15 ml) together with
1 tube (60 ml) of your chosen shade, add the equivalent amount of Profession
Cream Developer, e.g. 60 ml 5.3 + 15 ml 0.33 + 75 ml Profession Developer.

When to use:
Contrast shades should only be used for partial
color applications and should not be applied to the
scalp. Contrast shades on natural uncolored hair
will give an intense vibrant color result. Contrast
shades on already colored hair will give an intense
color result depending on the previous color. On
hair that has been colored with a black or very dark
brown shade, or hair with color build-up may not
accept the new Contrast color as easily as hair
colored with a lighter shade. (Strand test is advised.)
How to use:

Contrast shades give intensive and vibrant results even on dark
natural bases. Contrast shades can be used on already colored
hair to add rich tones, without the need to prelighten or strip
the existing color from the hair.

The .03 and .04 shades are warm naturals,
ideal to mix with a warm toned shade
to retain a true shade result on white hair.

Profession Advanced Color
Advanced coverage shades (9.00, 9.30,
8.00, 7.00, 7.30, 6.00, 6.80, 5.60 and 4.80) also
perfectly cover white resistant hair (designed
for 80%–100% white hair). These shades have
got the same cream base and same processing
times as PCC standard shades, but include
a 40% higher concentration of color pigments.
Use with 9% developer; for lengths and ends
use standard PCC shades with 2% developer.
The .0 and .00 shades are cool naturals,
ideal to mix with a cool toned shade
to retain a true shade result on white hair.
Always apply your color
to the most resistant white hair first.

APPLICATION & DEVELOPMENT

hair at the root area only
