Tell Me Where It Hurts
Getting good information about a vehicle’s problem from the
owner is a challenge (especially if you aren’t the one driving the
car regularly). It takes some good detective work by you and the
service writer to get the info needed to find the problem.
Here are a few questions we ask the vehicle owner:
• When does the problem occur? When the vehicle is first
started in the morning?(cold engine), When the vehicle is
started after sitting all day at work? When the vehicle is warmed
up, and then started after sitting for 10-15 mins? 30min? Several hours?
• Does the problem occur when the outside air temp is cold? cool? humid? HOT!?
After or during a rain storm?
• Does the problem occur at low speeds, when starting from a stop and accelerating or when driven at a constant speed on the highway?
• Does the problem occur when accelerating hard at “wide open throttle”?, maybe
under light acceleration?
• Does the noise or problem occur when accelerating, slowing down, braking,
turning? Left or Right? Sharp turn or gradual sweeping turn, over bumpy Roads?
• Has there been any service work or other work performed on the car recently?
• Driving habits changed at all? New Job? New Home Location? New Husband or
Wife Driving the car? Teenager?
• Have you owned the vehicle long?
Often times when trying to locate a problem, it helps to go out with the customer
and watch them drive the car, and see under what conditions the problem or noise
occurs. You drive the vehicle everyday and you know what its doing. Problems like,
“The car rattles and pings when I go over bumps.” The bumps that we may drive
over may not be the same bumps as the speed bumps in your work parking lot.

How Old Is Your
Vehicle’s Battery?
“If I only knew sooner.” Yep, we’ve all been
there before. Fortunately, there are a few
symptoms that may indicate your battery
needs attention. Before it’s too late.
* Slow engine crank: When you attempt to
start the vehicle, the cranking of the engine is
sluggish and takes longer than normal to
start. If you are the one that normally drives
the vehicle, you’ll KNOW its slow to start.
* Check engine or battery light on in the dash:
The battery light will come on if there is an
issue with your charging system. The check
engine light sometimes appears when your
battery power is too weak.
* The swelling, bloating battery case: If this
happens, you can blame excessive heat for
causing your battery case to swell, decreasing
your battery life.
* Battery leak: Leaking also causes the
corrosion around the posts: (where the + and
– cable connections are located.: ) The gunk
may need to be removed; otherwise, the
battery will not charge correctly or your car
may not start.
* Old age: Yep. Sometimes there is no other
reason than old age. Your battery can last
well beyond three years but, at the very least,
have its current condition inspected on a
yearly basis when it reaches the three year
mark.
Auto Plus inspects and tests your
battery at every service to try and
reduce the likelihood of you getting
stranded.
