ADVANTAGES OF THREADMILLING

to generate threads by threadmilling with the helical
interpolation function in the control. It is possible,
therefore, to complete a revolution around the component
providing the following advantages.
-Threading can be accomplished in the
same set-up as other operations.
-The same Thread Milling Cutter can be used for both
right and left-hand thread, as well as internal and
external operations, regardless of the thread diameter.
-The same Thread Milling Cutter can be used for various
thread pitches and profiles by changing the insert.
-Substantial cost savings can be made on large diameter
threads, because large taps are very expensive and most
CNC machines are limited on the size of tap they can use.
Larger machines must invest in expensive and heavy
tapping heads to produce even average quality threads.
-A superior quality thread can be produced by Thread
Milling, especially in softer materials where taps often
produce torn threads.

Technical Information
SOLID CARBIDE MILLS
Solid carbide ThreadMills are primarily designed for the
internal thread-milling of small diameters. Modern high-speed
CNC-machining centers can offer the ideal cutting conditions
for the economical application of carbide tools for even
the smallest sizes.
As the solid carbide ThreadMills have 3 flutes, feed rates
can be much higher than that of a single pocket indexable
thread milling cutter.
THREADMILLS WITH INDEXABLE INSERTS
ThreadMills with indexable inserts are for both external and
internal applications on modern CNC machining centers
with helical interpolation.
Cutters with coolant channels direct the coolant onto the
cutting edge.
The high precision pocket accuracy of the cutter, together
with the very close tolerance of the insert, allow insert changes
without costly and time consuming program re-setting.
When using cutters with 2 or 4 pockets, it is possible to
increase production by 2 to 4 times.

Most inserts have 2 cutting edges which are precision ground
and can be used on both sides.
15º - 20º
During heavy cutting conditions, the insert has a tendency
to tip. With the patented ThreadMill design, this is prevented
by the 15 degree dovetail undercut at the rear of the pocket.
This also helps absorb cutting forces which tend to cause
vibrations. Higher feed rates can be employed with this design
without risk of movement or damage to the insert.

THREAD MILL DIAMETER
The smallest hole you can thread mill is dependent on three
factors: clearance, helix angle and the thread profile. If the
thread diameter is too small in relation to the cutter diameter,
the thread profile could be incorrect.
The table opposite gives the maximum diameter permissible
for a thread milling cutter without causing an incorrect profile.
The table is based on thread forms with 55 and 60 degree
profile angles. The values in the parenthesis are applicable
when dthread<1.125".

Maximum productivity will always be achieved by using a
multi flute cutter and inserts of sufficient size to produce
the thread length in one rotation.
Once these parameters are realized, the smallest diameter
thread mill holder should be selected, as this will give the
shortest possible cycle time.

CUTTING SPEED
START UP
When thread milling, the surface speed
should be 30-50% higher than single point
threading, since the insert is "in cut" for a
very short period.
To avoid start up marks and achieve a smoother
entrance into the workpiece, the "arcing-in"
technique is recommended. It is important that the
tool is compensated in the Z axis in order to avoid
an incorrect thread profile.
FEED
In most cases, the feed is between .002" .006"/tooth. Factors influencing the feed
are: stability, surface finish requirements,
profile depth and material.
FEED RATE
In most systems, the feed rate at the
center of the tool is programmed, which
means that the actual feed rate for
internal thread milling is higher than the
programmed feed. For external thread
milling, the opposite is true. It is necessary
to correct this according to the example
on the following page.
LONG THREADS
In certain cases the thread length required on the
component is longer than the insert or cutter length,
therefore, the following procedure should be
adopted: 1. Make the complete revolution of the
part in the normal way and exit the thread to the
start position. Move the cutter in the Z axis the
required number of pitches to complete the thread
length. 2. Make a second revolution as per step
number 1.
COARSE THREADS
When a thread profile is very deep, it may be
necessary to mill the thread in two passes. We
recommend that 2/3 of the depth be taken on the
first pass, and the remainder on the final pass.
