Is the show “Scrubbing In” good or

I watched it and was embarrassed.
I traveled for 9 years and I never I
said never saw nurses act this way.
This show does put a bad light on
our profession and the baby nurses
that think this is how travelers act.
Bad for recruiting and if I was a hospital after seeing this show I would
think twice before hiring travel
nurses and that is very very sad to
me for something I cherish so much.

I also traveled as an RN and
find this show repulsive to our
profession. If these people wish
to portray themselves in this
manner, that is their business,
but when they identify themselves as RN’s and portray our
profession in this manner, I find
it reprehensible.

Traveling takes many forms
T
here are many in the traveling profession who make a positive impact
in the healthcare arena each day. There are still many others in the field
who go beyond the boundaries of everyday work responsibilities, demonstrating extraordinary dedication and commitment.
Take for instance Marla Preader, RN, BLS, ACLS, PALS, who — as a new
traveler — was stuck down by cancer. Racked by the feelings that she wasn’t
fulfilling her agreement, she called her recruiter the day after her surgery to
say she would be back at work promptly — never mind the pain.
In honor of travel clinicians who go the extra mile during the course of
their mobile duties, Healthcare Traveler is pleased to recognize 47 outstanding individuals chosen as the 2013 Travelers of the Year.
We also acknowledge — along with many in the traveling industry —
that travelers usually can’t do their jobs effectively if recruiting agencies
don’t do theirs. Once again, we have gone through hundreds of nominations to assemble a list of stellar recruiters nominated by appreciative travelers. These 51 staffing agency members named to the 2013 Recruiters of
the Year class not only demonstrated a willingness and capability to excel
at their jobs, but also the motivation to ensure that their travelers shone at
theirs.
All of the professionals included

Agency Insights
Information for Healthcare Professionals on the Move
BILL HELLER
HealthcareTraveler.com
EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD
How to determine if an
agency is dependable
T
he vast majority of travel healthcare
companies are ethical, reputable,
and stable from a business standpoint,
but it pays to be choosy when deciding
which agencies to sign with. We spoke
with Bill Heller, president of RN Network about what traveling healthcare
professionals should look for in a reliable staffing career partner.
HT: What are some basic steps
travelers should take to determine
if a staffing agency is reputable and
suitable of signing with?
Heller: They should approach choosing
an agency like they would with any
other business arrangement, by starting with research. They should visit
the company website to check for some
simple things like how long the agency
has been in business.
HT: If all that checks out, what’s
next?
Heller: Once they have the basic sense
of a company, they should contact a recruiter to find out more, such as what
the service structure is. For example,
if they signed, would they always deal
with one recruiter, or would they
work with individuals in credentialing, housing, and payroll separately to
manage those pieces of the puzzle.
HT: What do you think differentiates one firm from other?
Heller: All travel healthcare agencies
do pretty much the same thing —
and say the same things about what
they do. When considering a firm, a
6

traveler should ask detailed questions
about how a company delivers selectservices, and – this is important – how
they measure their own level of service, internally. All agencies say they
deliver great service to their travelers,
but what criteria do they base that
statement on?
Healthcare Traveler’s Editorial Advisory Board was
established to provide the magazine with input from
industry leaders to help develop editorial content.
Members are chosen by the magazine’s editors to offer
insight into the topics covered by Healthcare Traveler,
and to provide a voice and leadership for the healthcare
traveling industry.

HT: So travelers should get down to
that level of detail when evaluating
a company?
Cynthia Kinnas, president,
Randstad Healthcare
Yvonne Lawson-Thomas, RN,
InteliStaf Travel
Jeff Long, marketing manager,
Heller: Absolutely. Another thing to
ask a recruiter is what their agency’s
biggest challenge is. How someone answers that question can be very revealing. They can also present a scenario
such as, “Tell me about a recent service
failure and how your company remedied it.” Once you’re with an agency,
there will be glitches from time to
time. What’s important is how a company addresses those glitches and
whether travelers are satisfied with the
outcome when little things go wrong.
HT: What are some red flags that
healthcare travelers should watch
for when scouting an agency?
Heller: Remember the old adage that,
“If it sounds too good to be true, it
probably is.” If a company is offering
something that’s far off the norm for
the industry standard in terms of pay
or benefits, be careful. Be especially
wary of a firm that offers tax-free
compensation that is beyond what
most other firms offer. It might make
for a sweet deal now, but if you get in
trouble with the IRS down the road,
that’s not so sweet. ■

News and Notes
More nurses tuning
into social media
Registered nurses (RNs), doctors,
pharmacists, and allied professionals
alike have increased their personal
and professional use of mobile devices
since last year and expect access to
future jobs via mobile devices, according to a new study.
Based on a survey of various
healthcare professionals AMN
Healthcare’s 2013 Survey of Social
Media and Mobile Usage by Healthcare Professionals: Job Search and Career Trends, clinicians are more discerning about the number, type, and
frequency of online and social media
resources they are using as compared
to prior years.
Among some of the findings:
• About two-thirds of all clinicians surveyed said they have actively looked for a job in the past two
years, with allied professionals most
likely to have looked (79 percent),
followed by pharmacists (68 percent),
RNs (54 percent) and physicians (53
percent).
Overall, there were significantly
fewer RNs who reported looking for a
job in 2013 compared to prior years,
while there are significantly more
pharmacists looking in 2013 than in
prior years.
• Three-quarters of all healthcare professionals report using their
smart phones and tablets for access-
ing mobile applications and half say
they are receiving mobile text alerts
from recruiters, at their request. Half
of the respondents who have opted
in to receive mobile job alerts from
recruiters say this method has produced results.
Foreign nurses play big
role in U.S. healthcare
A new study released by Rand Corporation reports that foreign-educated
and foreign-born health professionals
play a vital role in the U.S. healthcare
workforce, but strategic shifts such as
changes in immigration laws may be
needed to stabilize the nation’s healthcare workforce, especially the nursing
sector.
The study, published in the November issue of Health Affairs, outlines
the contributions that foreign-educated and foreign-born professionals
make to the U.S. workforce.
According to the data, foreign-born
registered nurses (RNs) account for 12
to 15 percent of the total RNs in the
United States, with 5.4 percent both
foreign born and foreign educated.
Meanwhile, physicians educated
outside the United States account for
approximately 25 percent of the U.S.
physician workforce and foreign-born
direct care workers — including nursing aides and home health aides who
work in the U.S. healthcare industry

Legislative Corner
Michigan looking to
grow nursing pool
To meet this shortfall Michigan must
ensure that people looking to choose
new career paths know the need we
have in nursing, and have more options to get the training they need.
To help address the potential
shortages in nursing, our office has
introduced legislation allowing community colleges to offer four-year
degrees in six areas of education,
including nursing, to provide more
educational opportunities for local
residents.
House Bill 4148 enables community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees
in nursing along with other fields of
study, including allied health specialties and information technology.
But our health-care industry is in
for many challenges in the near-term,
including an upcoming nursing shortage. Baby boomers who are nurses
are reaching retirement age, and
the millions of other baby boomers
across the country will need healthcare services.
The need for qualified nurses will
grow to 3.45 million in 2020 from
2.74 million recorded in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics.
Figures indicate, there will be a
need for 495,500 replacements in the
nursing work force, bringing the total
number of job openings for nurses to
1.2 million by 2020.

hat characteristics does the ideal healthcare

dependability, loyalty, professionalism, and an
adventurous spirit as qualities that are most
sought, especially when an assignment isn’t ideal, or workplace
circumstances call for a level head.

the right stuff, according to those who nominated them. Some
are fresh to the field, and others have been mobile clinicians for

However, all seem to share something extra, earning them the

ost healthcare travelers would concur that trust is an
essential ingredient in a successful traveler-recruiter
relationship.
Valuable characteristics on the part of the
recruiter that tends to nurture and grow that relationship is the
willingness to listen, the capacity to empathize, and desire to
help when things get sticky.
Such things are big in the traveler-recruiter bond, but happen
inside staffing agencies, in different cities, daily.
This year, we congratulate 51 recruiters who helped their
travelers get to their assignments, and beyond.

stay with Nightingale and travel nursing.”

I have a good listener who listens more than he

Miles Mattern
Senior Recruiter/Team Lead

“When I think of “Recruiter of the Year” I can
only think of one person,
Miles Mattern. I had taken a break from
traveling to purchase and run a small boutique
hotel in Mexico and when I decided that I was
ready to go again, Miles was there to feld the
calls, answer all my questions and give me a bit
of much needed guidance. He really listened to
me and found a position that suited my skills
and personality. He was even brave enough to
steer me away of assignments that, in his opinion, were not right for me and I did and do trust
his opinion. Miles was also beyond helpful with
the state board of nursing as he streamlined
my paper work so that I didn’t have to think
too much ( I had a whole lot going on). Miles
is both a motivator and a confdant and I feel
like I have known him for years even though
we have never met. His professionalism and
enthusiasm go way beyond his youthful age
and I highly recommend him to other nurses
whenever I can. I am so happy that Miles is my
“Recruiter of the Year” and I really can’t imagine
using anyone else.”

In the Bag
One travel nurse who keeps it
natural while on the road
Travelers come in different forms — some are hard to label
and some are luminescent. Christa Schulman, RN,
BLS, ACLS, is a diamond in the mist who’s been traveling
for two years. Originally from Missouri, Christa contracts
with Rise Medical Staffing. She explains her passion for
wellness and helping others derived from her father’s
long history of illness. The nurses who provided him
quality care impacted his recovery, inspiring her current
occupation of working in med/surg/tele units. There, she
strives to be a positive strength for her patients. While on assignments, she
enjoys studying precious gems and period jewelry, and has flirted with the
idea of becoming a certified gemologist. “I’m wildly amazed by the beautiful
elements made by God and refined by man,” she says. “Collecting precious
sparkles is my serious hobby.”
#1 TRAVEL ESSENTIAL:
Gas in the tank...and a
lightweight cashmere
sweater.
COMFORT ITEMS:
Speziali Fiorentini
profumo ‘Olive
and Sunflower’,
is a unique Italian
fragrance that makes
me feel well dressed
even when I’m
wearing jeans and
a Tee. An old set of
Anichini linens in a
shell colored damask pattern. They’ve
been washed hundreds of times and
are blissfully soft. Trader Joe’s Chocolate
Almond Horns are my new addiction.
FAVORITE ASSIGNMENT DESTINATION:
I love California. It’s a grand state that
features a diverse climate and geography.
The bountiful farmers markets and
beautiful weather keeps me healthy and
active. There aren’t many places
where the beach and mountains
are easily accessible. I’m never at
a loss for things to do, like visiting
the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. My
time here remains personally and
professionally rewarding.
PERSONAL TOUCHES:
I hang a Cross covered
with Milagros in
my bedroom as a
symbol that with Faith
everything is possible.
I found this cross in a
small Mexican shop
in Tucson, Arizona.
Milagros are small
metal charms
(depicting body parts,
animals, houses, and other subjects)
that people carry for protection and good
luck. My wooden cross has a multitude of
charms pinned to it. I consider it Spiritual
Insurance.
Also a must are lightly fragrant candles.
My favorites: Trapp ‘Bob’s Flower Shop’,
Aquiesse ‘Tea Madarin’, and Kenneth
Turner-London ‘Original’. These fragrances
soothe my soul after a long day.
CHERISHED KEEPSAKES: Goofy videos
created by my shameless friends prior to
my departure. They were made with a
cool app EIGHT-MM which turns videos
into vintage style footage. Images are
faded in color, flickers, and have scratchy
sounds just like those you’d find in a 50s
or 60s reel-to-reel film. I giggle every
time I watch them. My friends are nuts.

CREATURE COMFORTS: My beloved
MOBILE TUNES: Serge Gainsbourg,
Gillian Welch, Fugees, Best of Blue
Grass, Keb Mo, Andrea Bocelli, Harry
Nilsson’s “Coconut” song is a must on
any playlist. I recently watched “Searching
for Sugarman” and want to hear more of
Rodriguez’s soulful sounds.
NIGHT STAND READS: ‘Inbox Messages’
on my iPhone. Initially, I thought traveling
would dilute my friendships back home.
You know, Out of sight-Out of mind.
Instead, I’ve noticed the distance has
brought me closer to many of friends as
we now text frequently. Reading their
heartfelt words and of their happenings
removes the time zones between us.
SuperCAT, a 14-year-old tortoise-shell
feline who exudes the epitome of
coolness and great company. We met in
a vineyard in the Napa Valley. She was
just a wee kitten then and obviously
homeless. We mutually decided to
keep each other and its been a grand
adventure ever since. She adapts easily
to new environments, loves the smells
of new vegetation, chasing small objects,
and enjoys occasional trips to the beach
and Redwoods.

Gifts to consider for your pets
P
icture when you come home from a long shift to find
your pets waiting at the door to greet you.
Now, you can reciprocate.
Christmas is around the corner, so you want to treat that
fabulous feline or dedicated dog, there many gift options
out there to a make everyone happy. I am certain your kitties would love new catnip toys and the dogs will be happy
to chew on another bully stick, but here are some positively
inventive new products on the market worth a look.
Making happy cats
Available from www.thegrommet.com, this kitty hammock
is sure to be the best resting place in the house. The fleece
and nylon Cat Crib is sturdy, washable and comfy. It is well
suited for small space living offering secure Velcro straps
that allow the crib to be attached in unused spaces such as
the undersides of stools, end tables, and chairs. If you travel
with your cat, this is a perfect travel bed for under $30, and
takes up little space in your suitcase.
Some great handmade options are available at www.
etsy.com like a 8-inch long jumbo shrimpie toy. Made
to order by RustCraft, the shrimpie is a substantial toy,
available in a variety of colors and is budget friendly.

Doing for dogs
There are so many innovative dog products available
each year, it can be overwhelming to find “the one” that
will provide good service and keep your dog comfortable
or entertained during long hours away from home. I’ve
done a little homework for you, so you can narrow down
your search for the perfect dog gift.
The Grommet also offers the Rad Dog Release and
Run Leash. This is a dog collar with holds its own retractable leash and handle. The “leash” disappears away
into the collar when not in use and pulls out easily when
you are ready to resume control of your dog. It’s the perfect companion for mixed on and off lead activities and,
like the Cat Crib, is a spacesaver.
The combo is available in four sizes ranging from a
neck measurement of 14 inches to 25 inches and is advertised as suitable for dogs weighing up to 110 pounds.
Keeping your dog comfortable for outdoor activities
can be a challenge based on the nature of your travel.
It’s nice to be able to move from warm to cold climates,
knowing you have gear the will keep your dogs toasty or
cool.

Sometimes traveling isn’t a
bowl of cherries
Tips from a Traveler
W
hile most of my Healthcare
Traveler columns cast a positive spin on the travel nursing
profession, I try to inform travelers
about the pitfalls of the healthcare
travel industry that can arise because
there’s something to be learned from
negative experiences.
Actually, I don’t have to draw from
the travel problems of others—not
when I’m facing challenges on my current contract. It goes to show that even
after almost 20 years of traveling, you
can never fully ensure a contract will
guard against unexpected problems.
My current assignment has me at
hospital for an eight-week contract.
After renewing for another eightweek contract recently, the facility
requested an additional 13-week commitment from me, placing me on site
until next March.
I was thrilled to have a steady assignment for the period, and I was
also able to write into my contract
time off during Christmas to return
home (something that any traveler
can do with any dates during an upcoming assignment). Everything was
good, or so I thought.
An issue began with my first pay
period when my travel company
didn’t have my time record. At the
hospital, I swipe in using a badge and
then administrators input the time.
Actually, in this case, the hospital uses
a third party to track travel contracts
and all hours that travelers work.
Because of some miscommunication
about my hours, I’ve had to contact
the correct hospital personnel, (and
then having to contact their bosses) to
have my hours inputted for each pay
period. This has been constant so far.
Next, because of a low unit census,
the hospital asked me to float to an30

through a variety of methods including
streaming, text, and video platforms.
Participants can earn their degree
on a full-time or part-time basis.
Classes are held during the spring,
fall, and summer sessions are vary in

RNs can transfer up to 90 credits from
a university or college previously attended, including up to 25 nursing credit
hours from an accredited Associate’s program. Admission to the KU program is
open to anyone with an unencumbered
RN license and an overall GPA of 2.5.
Graduates must complete 120 credit
hours with a cumulative grade-point
average of at least 2.0. Also, the final 30
hours must have been taken through KU.
To enroll in the RN to BSN degree
program, candidates must have a current RN license, either a diploma or
Associate’s in nursing, and a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Interested nurses can complete the

your
shift
Jennifer L.W. Fink, RN, BSN, is a registered nurse
and freelance writer from Milwaukee, Wis. Her work has
appeared in a variety of publications, including RN, Nursing
Spectrum, Scholastic Parent & Child, and Ladies’ Home Journal.
Nurses are human, and humane
Y
ou might not think you have extraordinary insight into the human condition, but you do.
As a nurse, you’ve spent time with people who are suffering. You have been present at the beginning of life, at the end of life
and at all the signposts and detours along
the way. You have helped families rejoice,
and helped them to grieve.
You’ve seen some families disintegrate
under stress, while others come together
during times of challenge. You’ve seen the
truth and raw emotion beyond the shiny,
happy faces most people present to the
public, and kept that knowledge, deep
inside.
That knowledge infuses your practice
and your personal life — and has the power
to change someone’s world.
Filmmaker Carolyn Jones believes that
nurses’ knowledge of humanity gives them
unique insight and power. Nurses, she says,
are “a unique group of people who have
amassed knowledge about all of us that is
absolutely essential. If we were smart, we
would turn to them for answers.”
Jones is the artist behind “The American
Nurse Project,” a book and soon-to-be
documentary that explores nursing in
America. The print version of the project,
a coffee table book featuring 75 black and
white portraits and interviews with nurses,
was published in 2012 to critical acclaim.
(New York Times columnist Theresa
Brown called it “a beautiful and moving
testament to the soulful, selfless caregiving
that nurses work hard to provide.”) The
documentary, an expansion of the book
project, will hit the film festival circuit in
early 2014.
When Jones began “The American
Nurse Project,” she, like many Americans,
believed that “a nurse is a nurse is a nurse.”
Nurses, she learned, are experts at understanding and accepting humanity. Because
they understand that their patients’ needs
extend far beyond IVs, bed baths and medications, nurses often tap into their personal reservoirs and share their strength,
stories and souls with patients in an effort
to heal hurting humans.
Think about that for a minute. The
importance of our work can easily be lost,
even to us, as we hurry through demanding
shifts, but the truth is that we are in intimate contact with the souls of other human
beings on a regular basis. And while we’ve
upgraded our tech skills to keep pace with
a world that is increasing technical, we’ve
also managed to hold onto our humanity.
Consider death, for a moment. Most
nurses know, understand and respect the
reality of death. Most Americans are nearly
completely removed from the reality of
death.
“We go see Uncle Jimmy in the hospital
or nursing home and there he is, looking
great and managing for that hour or so.
Then we leave. The rest of the week, Uncle
Jimmy doesn’t look so hot, but we don’t
see that, so we make bad decisions, saying,
‘he looks great,’” Jones says. “We give him
another antibiotic; give him a feeding tube
because most of us have lost touch with the
concept of death.”
Nurses, Jones believes, can help right
our healthcare system by sharing the reality of illness and death with patients and
family members. Through their actions,
nurses can show patients, family members
and society how to engage with people on a
deeply personal level. Nurses often seem to
intuitively know when to cry or pray with a
patient, but that ‘intuition’ is really the result
of finely honed experience. Nurses know
when to listen and when to share, and they
can share that knowledge with others.
“A nurse will say, ‘My job is to care for
my patients,’ which sounds so simple,”
Jones says. “But the net result is a respect for
one another as human beings that the rest
of us have lost touch with. Nurses’ ability
to understand humanity is so rich and so
valuable. It can help us all make decisions
about bigger issues in this country.” ■

THINGS NURSES SHOULD KNOW
It’s OK to cry.
Many people (even
healthcare professionals)
believe that crying in
front of someone who is
grieving will somehow
make things worse. Nurses
know that honest tears
sometimes help others feel
and move through pain.

Death is not defeat.
Modern medicine
offers a lot of
treatment options
and cures, but
every single life
will end in death.
Nurses understand
death as a process
and part of life.
Personal beliefs matter.
Textbooks are of limited
value in the real world.
What a patient “should” do
and what they will do may
vary widely, depending
on the patient’s culture
and beliefs. Nurses listen
to patients and tailor
treatment to their lives.
Don’t beat
yourself up.
You are going to
make mistakes
Nursing is a highly
charged, pressurefilled occupation. But,
mistakes happen.
Learn from them so
you continue to grow.
Be proud.
You are programmed
to be a nurse
and even if you
don’t feel like one
sometimes, you
are. Feel good that
you’re able to change
someone’s life.
