There are still many others in the field who go beyond the boundaries of everyday work responsibilities, demonstrating extraordinary dedication and commitment. Take for instance Marla Preader, RN, BLS, ACLS, PALS, who — as a new traveler — was stuck down by cancer. Racked by the feelings that she wasn’t fulfilling her agreement, she called her recruiter the day after her surgery to say she would be back at work promptly — never mind the pain. In honor of travel clinicians who go the extra mile during the course of their mobile duties, Healthcare Traveler is pleased to recognize 47 outstanding individuals chosen as the 2013 Travelers of the Year. We also acknowledge — along with many in the traveling industry — that travelers usually can’t do their jobs effectively if recruiting agencies don’t do theirs. Once again, we have gone through hundreds of nominations to assemble a list of stellar recruiters nominated by appreciative travelers. These 51 staffing agency members named to the 2013 Recruiters of the Year class not only demonstrated a willingness and capability to excel at their jobs, but also the motivation to ensure that their travelers shone at theirs. All of the professionals included YOUR VOICE in this issue have demonstrated the flexibility to embrace change and keep on moving forward. Healthcare Traveler hopes to remain flexible also by changing with times and keeping in step with our mobile audience. As the healthcare travel industry continues to serve its clientele by adopting higher technology, Healthcare Traveler is pursuing a plan to serve its core mobile audience by going to an all-digital Answer at Facebook by going to format. We spoke with Bill Heller, president of RN Network about what traveling healthcare professionals should look for in a reliable staffing career partner. HT: What are some basic steps travelers should take to determine if a staffing agency is reputable and suitable of signing with? Heller: They should approach choosing an agency like they would with any other business arrangement, by starting with research. They should visit the company website to check for some simple things like how long the agency has been in business. HT: If all that checks out, what’s next? Heller: Once they have the basic sense of a company, they should contact a recruiter to find out more, such as what the service structure is. For example, if they signed, would they always deal with one recruiter, or would they work with individuals in credentialing, housing, and payroll separately to manage those pieces of the puzzle. HT: What do you think differentiates one firm from other? Heller: All travel healthcare agencies do pretty much the same thing — and say the same things about what they do. When considering a firm, a 6 ∣ Healthcare Traveler December 2013 magenta cyan yellow black traveler should ask detailed questions about how a company delivers selectservices, and – this is important – how they measure their own level of service, internally. All agencies say they deliver great service to their travelers, but what criteria do they base that statement on? Healthcare Traveler’s Editorial Advisory Board was established to provide the magazine with input from industry leaders to help develop editorial content. Members are chosen by the magazine’s editors to offer insight into the topics covered by Healthcare Traveler, and to provide a voice and leadership for the healthcare traveling industry. Tim Groves, RN, American Mobile Healthcare Jennifer Hamrick, RN, CNOR, NovaPro Staffing Lila Johnson, RN, Foundation Medical Staffing HT: So travelers should get down to that level of detail when evaluating a company? Cynthia Kinnas, president, Randstad Healthcare Yvonne Lawson-Thomas, RN, InteliStaf Travel Jeff Long, marketing manager, Heller: Absolutely. Another thing to ask a recruiter is what their agency’s biggest challenge is. How someone answers that question can be very revealing. They can also present a scenario such as, “Tell me about a recent service failure and how your company remedied it.” Once you’re with an agency, there will be glitches from time to time. What’s important is how a company addresses those glitches and whether travelers are satisfied with the outcome when little things go wrong. HT: What are some red flags that healthcare travelers should watch for when scouting an agency? Heller: Remember the old adage that, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” If a company is offering something that’s far off the norm for the industry standard in terms of pay or benefits, be careful. Be especially wary of a firm that offers tax-free compensation that is beyond what most other firms offer. It might make for a sweet deal now, but if you get in trouble with the IRS down the road, that’s not so sweet. ■ Medical Solutions Inc. Jean Magnuson, RN, Soliant Health Michele M. Based on a survey of various healthcare professionals AMN Healthcare’s 2013 Survey of Social Media and Mobile Usage by Healthcare Professionals: Job Search and Career Trends, clinicians are more discerning about the number, type, and frequency of online and social media resources they are using as compared to prior years. Among some of the findings: • About two-thirds of all clinicians surveyed said they have actively looked for a job in the past two years, with allied professionals most likely to have looked (79 percent), followed by pharmacists (68 percent), RNs (54 percent) and physicians (53 percent). Overall, there were significantly fewer RNs who reported looking for a job in 2013 compared to prior years, while there are significantly more pharmacists looking in 2013 than in prior years. • Three-quarters of all healthcare professionals report using their smart phones and tablets for access- ing mobile applications and half say they are receiving mobile text alerts from recruiters, at their request. Half of the respondents who have opted in to receive mobile job alerts from recruiters say this method has produced results. Foreign nurses play big role in U.S. healthcare A new study released by Rand Corporation reports that foreign-educated and foreign-born health professionals play a vital role in the U.S. healthcare workforce, but strategic shifts such as changes in immigration laws may be needed to stabilize the nation’s healthcare workforce, especially the nursing sector. The study, published in the November issue of Health Affairs, outlines the contributions that foreign-educated and foreign-born professionals make to the U.S. workforce. According to the data, foreign-born registered nurses (RNs) account for 12 to 15 percent of the total RNs in the United States, with 5.4 percent both foreign born and foreign educated. Meanwhile, physicians educated outside the United States account for approximately 25 percent of the U.S. physician workforce and foreign-born direct care workers — including nursing aides and home health aides who work in the U.S. healthcare industry CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2014 Clinical Nurse Leader Summit January 16-18, 2014 Hyatt Regency Orange County, Anaheim, CA The 2014 Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Summit provides a national forum for all healthcare and academic audiences currently implementing or interested in 8 ∣ Healthcare Traveler December 2013 magenta yellow black exploring CNL education and practice. Despite their significant representation in the workforce, foreign-born and foreign-educated health workers say they often face problems such as unethical recruitment practices and discrimination in the workplace. ■ Legislative Corner Michigan looking to grow nursing pool To meet this shortfall Michigan must ensure that people looking to choose new career paths know the need we have in nursing, and have more options to get the training they need. To help address the potential shortages in nursing, our office has introduced legislation allowing community colleges to offer four-year degrees in six areas of education, including nursing, to provide more educational opportunities for local residents. House Bill 4148 enables community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in nursing along with other fields of study, including allied health specialties and information technology. But our health-care industry is in for many challenges in the near-term, including an upcoming nursing shortage. Baby boomers who are nurses are reaching retirement age, and the millions of other baby boomers across the country will need healthcare services. The need for qualified nurses will grow to 3.45 million in 2020 from 2.74 million recorded in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Figures indicate, there will be a need for 495,500 replacements in the nursing work force, bringing the total number of job openings for nurses to 1.2 million by 2020. Actually, I don’t have to draw from the travel problems of others—not when I’m facing challenges on my current contract. It goes to show that even after almost 20 years of traveling, you can never fully ensure a contract will guard against unexpected problems. My current assignment has me at hospital for an eight-week contract. After renewing for another eightweek contract recently, the facility requested an additional 13-week commitment from me, placing me on site until next March. I was thrilled to have a steady assignment for the period, and I was also able to write into my contract time off during Christmas to return home (something that any traveler can do with any dates during an upcoming assignment). Everything was good, or so I thought. An issue began with my first pay period when my travel company didn’t have my time record. At the hospital, I swipe in using a badge and then administrators input the time. Actually, in this case, the hospital uses a third party to track travel contracts and all hours that travelers work. Because of some miscommunication about my hours, I’ve had to contact the correct hospital personnel, (and then having to contact their bosses) to have my hours inputted for each pay period. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications, including RN, Nursing Spectrum, Scholastic Parent & Child, and Ladies’ Home Journal. Nurses are human, and humane Y ou might not think you have extraordinary insight into the human condition, but you do. As a nurse, you’ve spent time with people who are suffering. You have been present at the beginning of life, at the end of life and at all the signposts and detours along the way. You have helped families rejoice, and helped them to grieve. You’ve seen some families disintegrate under stress, while others come together during times of challenge. You’ve seen the truth and raw emotion beyond the shiny, happy faces most people present to the public, and kept that knowledge, deep inside. That knowledge infuses your practice and your personal life — and has the power to change someone’s world. Filmmaker Carolyn Jones believes that nurses’ knowledge of humanity gives them unique insight and power. Nurses, she says, are “a unique group of people who have amassed knowledge about all of us that is absolutely essential. If we were smart, we would turn to them for answers.” Jones is the artist behind “The American Nurse Project,” a book and soon-to-be documentary that explores nursing in America. The print version of the project, a coffee table book featuring 75 black and white portraits and interviews with nurses, was published in 2012 to critical acclaim. (New York Times columnist Theresa Brown called it “a beautiful and moving testament to the soulful, selfless caregiving that nurses work hard to provide.”) The documentary, an expansion of the book project, will hit the film festival circuit in early 2014. When Jones began “The American Nurse Project,” she, like many Americans, believed that “a nurse is a nurse is a nurse.” Nurses, she learned, are experts at understanding and accepting humanity. Because they understand that their patients’ needs extend far beyond IVs, bed baths and medications, nurses often tap into their personal reservoirs and share their strength, stories and souls with patients in an effort to heal hurting humans. Think about that for a minute. The importance of our work can easily be lost, even to us, as we hurry through demanding shifts, but the truth is that we are in intimate contact with the souls of other human beings on a regular basis. And while we’ve upgraded our tech skills to keep pace with a world that is increasing technical, we’ve also managed to hold onto our humanity. Consider death, for a moment. Most nurses know, understand and respect the reality of death. Most Americans are nearly completely removed from the reality of death. “We go see Uncle Jimmy in the hospital or nursing home and there he is, looking great and managing for that hour or so. Then we leave. The rest of the week, Uncle Jimmy doesn’t look so hot, but we don’t see that, so we make bad decisions, saying, ‘he looks great,’” Jones says. “We give him another antibiotic; give him a feeding tube because most of us have lost touch with the concept of death.” Nurses, Jones believes, can help right our healthcare system by sharing the reality of illness and death with patients and family members. Through their actions, nurses can show patients, family members and society how to engage with people on a deeply personal level. Nurses often seem to intuitively know when to cry or pray with a patient, but that ‘intuition’ is really the result of finely honed experience. Nurses know when to listen and when to share, and they can share that knowledge with others. “A nurse will say, ‘My job is to care for my patients,’ which sounds so simple,” Jones says. “But the net result is a respect for one another as human beings that the rest of us have lost touch with. Nurses’ ability to understand humanity is so rich and so valuable. It can help us all make decisions about bigger issues in this country.” ■ YOUR VOICE Does the industry enable nurses to be caring enough Answer at Facebook by going to HealthcareTraveler.com/NursingHuman THINGS NURSES SHOULD KNOW It’s OK to cry. Many people (even healthcare professionals) believe that crying in front of someone who is grieving will somehow make things worse. Nurses know that honest tears sometimes help others feel and move through pain. 32 ∣ magenta cyan yellow black Healthcare Traveler December 2013 Death is not defeat. Modern medicine offers a lot of treatment options and cures, but every single life will end in death. Nurses understand death as a process and part of life. Personal beliefs matter. Textbooks are of limited value in the real world. What a patient “should” do and what they will do may vary widely, depending on the patient’s culture and beliefs. Nurses listen to patients and tailor treatment to their lives. Don’t beat yourself up. You are going to make mistakes Nursing is a highly charged, pressurefilled occupation. But, mistakes happen. Learn from them so you continue to grow. Be proud. You are programmed to be a nurse and even if you don’t feel like one sometimes, you are. Feel good that you’re able to change someone’s life.
