Dear Guests,
To Benefit the
Russian
Society
Welcome to the 49th Annual Petroushka
Ball. WeChildren’s
are honored byWelfare
your attendance.
The Russian Children’s Welfare Society (RCWS) was founded in 1926 in the wake of the trauma and dislocation
caused by the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and its aftermath. In the years following the overthrow of the Russian
government, hundreds of thousands of Russians were forced to flee Russia; among them were thousands of helpless,
needy children. RCWS was born out of the eagerness to improve the lives of these little refugees; first in Europe, and,
after World War II, in South America.
Soon after the fall of the Communist government, RCWS began helping disadvantaged children in Russia, and from
the beginning of the 21st century, all of its assistance has been directed solely to help children in need within Russia.
Currently, our primary activities include: pediatric maxillofacial surgery in partnership with the Russian Aid Foundation; a successful college scholarship program currently supporting over 50 students; assisting select orphanages and
hosting an annual Christmas “Yelka” party where over 1,000 orphans from many areas of Russia celebrate an unforgettable day in Moscow. 100% of donations go directly to support orphans as our overhead is completely covered
through internal sources.
This year, we are thrilled to have Oksana Dyka and Sergey Semishkur, soloists from the Metropolitan Opera’s new
production of Prince Igor, as our guest performers. This is the first time in almost 100 years that the Metropolitan
Opera is staging Prince Igor and we are honored to hear a slice of this gorgeous opera here tonight. Over the years, we
have developed a strong association with opera and the leading operatic singers of our time. We have been fortunate to
work closely with, and earn the support of world-class performers who champion our mission. We hope to continue
with riveting performances in the years to come.
We urge you to take our Ball Program home with you and learn more about RCWS and its mission.
Thank you and enjoy the evening.

About the Society
This year, the Russian Children’s Welfare Society proudly celebrates the 88th anniversary of its founding. In the spring of 1926,
the original organizers pledged their commitment to improve
the lives of Russian children living outside the Soviet Union.
The direction of the Russian Children’s Welfare Society’s many
initiatives has been guided to a great extent by the unending political and social flux of the 20th century. The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 prompted the migration of large numbers of Russians to Western Europe, Asia, and North and South America.
By the early thirties, the Society had ten branches operating
throughout the United States and was sending money and material assistance to schools and organizations in locales as diverse
as Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Finland, France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Harbin, Shanghai, and Istanbul.
RCWS gained recognition from the Presidential War Relief
Control Board as an approved charity for work abroad during
the war. By 1950, the Society was again sending relief to 14
countries.
As Europe and North and South America became self sufficient,
and with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia’s infrastructure left an alarming number of children disenfranchised.
Consequently, RCWS shifted its focus to assisting underprivileged children living in Russia.
Given such a great need, the Russian Children’s Welfare Society
now directs all of its yearly aid to children in Russia by funding
an array of projects that include medical programs, educational
scholarships and programs, orphanages and homeless shelters,
and rehabilitation centers for the disabled or mentally challenged.
A SELECTION OF INITIAVES UNDERTAKEN BY
THE RCWS IN 2013 THANKS TO THE KIND
SUPPORT OF OUR PATRONS:
“GIVE BEAUTY BACK TO THE CHILDREN”PEDIATRIC MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY FUND
Thousands of Russian children are burdened by unsightly facial
deformities as a result of congenital defects, tumors, cleft lips,
cleft palates, and other traumas.
Only 2-3 hospitals in all of Russia have specialized surgeons to
undertake cases that often require
a series of surgeries and highly advanced medical technology. Consequently, treatment is often a
luxury few families have access to
even when it is a dire necessity for
a child’s physical and psychological well-being.
The Russian Children’s Welfare
Society has been involved in several medical assistance projects
helping to properly equip hospitals, promote training of Russian
doctors in the latest medical advancements, and co-sponsoring
the treatment of children.
Over seven years ago, RCWS launched “Give Beauty Back to
the Children,” in partnership with Professor Vitaly Roginsky, Head of the Moscow Center for Maxillofacial Surgery
(MCMS) and Lev Ambinder, Head of the Russian Aid Foundation (Rusfond). MCMS is one of the most innovative facilities in Russia providing treatment and rehabilitation for children with facial deformities.
The “Give Beauty Back to the Children” program has forever altered the lives of over 700 children suffering from facial deformities. Average cost per surgery is in the range of $2,500-$5,000.
Thanks to our mutual donors’ support and the help of advanced
medical micro technology, Professor Roginsky and his staff have
witnessed many of their patients’ personalities flourish with
hope and happiness as they gain the ability to do what is second
nature to most – to smile.
EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND PROGRAMS
During the nine years since the inception of the RCWS scholarship program, the number of participants has grown from
3 in the 2003-2004 academic year to over 50 in 2013-2014. Currently, RCWS is supporting 51 students in the Pskov,
Yaroslavl, Moscow and Velikiy Novgorod regions. To-date, the
scholarship program has been enormously successful in providing a support structure for students as they transition from
living in an orphanage to attending a university on their own. For an annual cost of approximately $2,500 per student, the
Society is helping orphans successfully complete an academic
degree or vocational training in order to steer them in the direction of a promising future. RCWS requires academic transcripts from each scholarship recipient, as well as reports on
the use of the stipend to assure accountability. Over fifty of our
scholarship recipients have thus far completed their schooling
and found employment. Since 2003, RCWS awarded 57 scholarships to orphanage
graduates in Pskov and a total of 40 students graduated as of
last summer. 15 students currently receive RCWS monthly
scholarships in Pskov; only 2 students have dropped out. This
is an outstanding achievement that we are very proud of. It
demonstrates that, given the opportunity and with professional guidance, orphans can exceed expectations and conquer
social stigma. RCWS is planning to expand the scholarship
program to assist more students.
Among students who graduated last summer is Aleksey Vasiliev,
who received a diploma with honors from the N.A. RimskyKorsakov College of Arts in Pskov. Another graduate is Anya
Voronova, who was enrolled in two degree programs at the Pskov
State University, studying Information Systems & Technologies
About the Society
and Economics. Anya wrote:”Thanks to support of our faraway
and at the same time very close friends in the US, I was able to
complete my second degree. It was crucial for me to have not
only financial, but moral support from RCWS team. Thank you.”
Irina Berestova graduated from the Science and Geography Department of the Pskov University and has already found a job.
Irina wrote in her statement: “I consider those who were accepted or will join the RCWS Scholarship Project to be extremely
lucky. They will find a strong support group, people you can
trust, who will listen and help you in a difficult situation.”
The Society also supports secondary education. St. Nicholas School, Kislovodsk
Established in 1992 and the first Russian Orthodox School in
the North Caucasus, the St. Nicholas School, weaves a social
service program into its academic curriculum so as to instill in
its students a sense
of morality in addition to giving them
a well-rounded education that inspires
creativity. RCWS
helped the school
acquire lab equipment for physics, biology, and chemistry
classes, as well as the
funds to revamp the cafeteria menu and guarantee 2 hot meals
each day per child.
St. Alexis school, Yaroslavl region
St. Alexis School in Yaroslavl region accommodates 230 children and is ranked as one of the best schools in Central Russia.
The school was struggling to provide variety with its meals and
lacked a bakery to produce quality bread so the RCWS funded
the construction of a baking facility. In addition to supplying
the school with bread, this facility will be a practical training
ground for children enrolled in cooking and baking classes.
Vladimir Spivakov International Foundation, Moscow
The Spivakov Foundation was established in 1994 by renowned
concert pianist Vladimir Spivakov to help disadvantaged chil-
dren in Russia evolve their musicality and artistry. The organization’s funds provide costly musical instruments, grants for
master study at home and abroad, and opportunities to exhibit
and participate in concerts. The Foundation also gives direct assistance to children in need by paying for operations, medicine,
wheelchairs and rehabilitative therapy. A grant from RCWS recently enabled the Foundation to pay for the lodging and transportation of disadvantaged children taking part in a music festival with participants hailing from different regions in Russia and
foreign countries.
ORPHANAGES
Our goal is to enable orphanages to meet basic needs, and to
promote comprehensive programs that help orphans grow to be
healthy and independent adults. Chaikovsky Orphanage, Chaikovsky, Perm Region
RCWS provided children from the Chaikovsky Orphanage
with books, as well as cold-weather attire for the icy winter
months. The Chaikovsky Orphanage is the only orphanage in
the city. It provides housing and basic necessities to children between the ages of one month and 9 years of age, in addition to
assisting with the foster home process.
Nikolo-Solbinsky Orphanage, Yaroslavl Region
The Nikolo-Solbinsky Orphanage (Solba) is a unique facility that provides girls between the ages of 3 and 16 with food,
clothes and medical treatment as well as a progressive secondary
education with an emphasis on health and the arts. The goal of
the organization is to nurture a rising generation of spiritually,
morally, and physically vibrant women. In fact, the orphanage
is located in the woods, a healthy and ecologically clean environment where the girls eat naturally grown food supplied by
Solba’s own farm. RCWS provided the funds to purchase new
textbooks, class equipment, and clothes for the girls, as well as to
cover the orphanage’s heating and electricity costs.
Pytalovo Specialized Ophanage, Pskov Region
The Pytalovo Specialized Orphanage for the hearing impaired
houses children who are deaf or have hearing impairments
of varying degrees that warrant specialized approaches with
regard to their education and development. The RCWS provided the orphanage with equipment for the Music Therapy
and Movement Room. Music classes allow the children to improve their speech and pronunciation, spark their motivation to
About the Society
study and offer effective ways for corrective education and development.
REHABILITATION CENTERS
Rehabilitation Center “Victoria” for Children with Disabilities, Velikiy Novgorod
The Center “Victoria” is the only one of its kind in Velikiy
Novgorod, an area in which 2,800 children with special needs
reside. The Center cares for over 200 severely disabled children,
providing them with medical treatment, social rehabilitation,
as well as psychological and educational support. The RCWS
funded the acquisition of new diagnostic and rehabilitation
equipment.
Rehabilitation Center “Preodolenie L”, Moscow
Founded in 1992, the center provides training, education and
physical therapy for disabled children from orphanages and low
income families. The goal of the Center is to prepare children to
be fully active members of society. The Center has been recognized by the Russian Government as one of the best facilities to
promote social education/rehabilitation for children with special needs. A hallmark program of the center is its horse therapy
program for children with disabilities. While riding horses, children feel a unique spirit of freedom and relaxation: no need to
sit in a wheelchair, hold onto crutches or grasp someone’s hand.
As a result, children improve their balance, tone their muscles,
enhance blood circulation and boost their metabolism.
YELKA – ANNUAL NEW YEAR AND
CHRISTMAS PARTY
This past December, over 1,400 children participated in the 14th
annual Yelka event, an RCWS sponsored Christmas and New
Year’s Party in Moscow. Many of the children in attendance traveled from remote villages in Russia for an opportunity to attend
the holiday music show “The Copper Bell” and tour the capital,
an experience that they cherished. RCWS covered the cost of
gifts, travel, and the holiday show tickets.
To continue our holiday tradition, RCWS personnel and volunteers together with “Ded Moroz” (Russian Santa Claus) visited
rehabilitation centers, pediatric hospitals and clinics to distribute
gifts and spread some holiday cheer amongst sick children who
could not attend the holiday show. Among the organizations included are the Rehabilitation Center “Detstvo” in the Moscow
region, the “Kupel’’ Center, children’s clinics at the Central Research Stomatological Institute and the Sechenov Academy. In
spite of their debilitating conditions, and in some cases severe
diagnoses, the children enthusiastically anticipate a visit from the
RCWS’s Ded Moroz. As Ludmilla Koroleva, RCWS Moscow
Director describes it: “Little patients are eager to sing, read poems, even stage a show. Children remain children and they want
to have fun and celebrate one of their favorite holidays even in
the hospital halls. Their performances and excitement are the
most touching part of the RCWS Yelka celebration, often bringing tears to the eyes of the adults.”
Please check the information about our on-going projects at the
Society’s web site: www.rcws.org
RCWS has been tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code since 1944.
The Society is proud of its accomplishments in its 88-year history, and pays tribute to all of our predecessors and donors who
transformed the organization into one of the leading charities in
Russia today. STAFF

The “Barynya” Balalaika Orchestra is one of the leading balalaika orchestras in the United States. It consists of world-class
musicians – conservatory graduates who have performed
with such groups as the Moiseyev Dance Company, the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company, the Don Cossacks
of Rostov-on-Don, the Andreyev State Symphonic Balalaika
Orchestra, the Moscow State Folk Center “Russian Song,”
and the Ensemble of Black Sea Navy Dancers.
Musical director – Elina Karokhina. The “Barynya” Balalaika
Orchestra plays balalaikas, bayan, domra, guitar, garmoshka
(Russian button accordion), balalaika contrabass, sax, violin
and drums.
THE LESTER LANIN ORCHESTRA
Music Director – Spencer Bruno
The world-renowned Lester Lanin Orchestra is an acknowledged leader and innovator of playing danceable, finger-snapping
rhythms for the haut monde of society, and has played at the Petroushka Ball for most, if not all, of its more than two decade existence. The orchestra’s continued success may be attributed to its
ability to adapt to the changing requirements of varying occasions,
be it a wedding reception playing Top-40 music, a debutante party,
charity ball, or a Presidential Inaugural Ball. Mr. Spencer Bruno,
the orchestra’s Music Director and principal arranger, is known
throughout the United States and Europe as the driving force behind the orchestra’s first-rate reputation, notable for attracting
of the finest and most professional musicians. As a saxophoneclarinetist-flutist, he has recorded and performed with many top,
classical and pop performers; most recently the list has included
Natalie Kole, Paul Anka and Johnny Mathis, among many others.

Who So Loved Children
Congratulations to the Russian Children’s Welfare Society for its 87 years
of good works, helping so many children find their way in the world
If a boy loves hard work,
and pokes his little finger in a book,
let it be written about him here:
He’s a good boy.
Thanks to the RCWS, thousands of children can follow my grandfather’s advice.
They will know what is good and what is bad, and will work hard and pick up a
book!
