What is the FASFA4caster?
Math
The FAFSA4caster is an online tool that will help you get an early start on the financial aid process by:
1. Providing an estimate of federal student aid eligibility.
2. Providing an estimate of the cost at selected institutions.
3. Giving an experience similar to the FAFSA on the Web online application.
4. Providing an option to apply for your FSA ID.
5. Increasing knowledge of the financial aid process and providing information about other sources of aid.
What’s the Cost?
The cost of attendance is a comprehensive planning budget that consists of tuition
and fees, housing, meal plan, books, transportation and personal expenses. Of those
components, the direct cost owed to Kent State University includes tuition and fees, oncampus housing and a meal plan. Amounts listed below represent average 2015-2016
academic year expenses and are subject to change for 2016-2017. Additional fees may
include program fees and special course fees.

 Consider attending a financial aid workshop or a high school financial aid presentation.
 Create a Federal Student Aid ID at fsaid.ed.gov. If the student
is dependent, at least one parent must also apply. The FSA ID
will serve as an electronic signature on the FAFSA.
 File the 2016-2017 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov by Feb. 15 for priority
processing and to ensure maximum financial aid eligibility.

 If you plan to enroll at Kent State University for a

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
Students must have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of zero based on the results of the FAFSA. The dollar amount can
vary based on financial need and enrollment status. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (half-time) each term.
This grant is for undergraduate students only.
Kent State University offers scholarships to outstanding incoming freshman students. Students who submit a complete application
for admission (including test scores, transcripts and paid application fee) by Jan. 15 and who are admitted to the Kent Campus will
automatically be considered for the following scholarships:

• Scholarship awarding is based on cumulative high school GPA and test scores (ACT or SAT taken before Dec. 31
of their senior year).
• In some cases, financial need, academic major, extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership are also
considered during the selection process.
• Most scholarships are renewable for an additional six consecutive terms, for a total of eight terms, provided students
meet specific renewal criteria for each scholarship.
• Scholarship offers may include a combination of several scholarship programs.

Kent State University Transfer Student Scholarships

ransfer Students who will attend the Kent Campus should apply and be admitted to Kent State University no later than
Jun. 1 to ensure consideration for the following scholarships awarded by the Admissions Office and the Student Financial
Aid Office:
Transfer Student Scholarship, Kent Bound Scholarship, Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship, the University Award
(for non-Ohio residents only) and Honors Academic Achievement Award (requires Honors College membership).

• Scholarship awards are based on academic performance (cumulative GPA from all prior colleges attended) and in
some cases students’ academic major, financial need, extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership.

Regional Campus Scholarships
Students who will attend a Regional Campus should contact that campus for more information regarding scholarship
opportunities and deadlines. Students can visit the Online Scholarship Search Qualifier at www.kent.edu/financialaid/
scholarships to find additional information on Regional Campus scholarships.
Regional Campus students who are transitioning to the Kent Campus and want to be considered for the Kent Campus
Connection Scholarship can complete the application at www.kent.edu/admissions/transfer-student-financial-aid/.
Federal Pell Grant - $581-$5,775*
Award eligibility is based on the results of the FAFSA and the student’s enrollment status. This grant is for undergraduate students only.
State Grants - For information about grant programs offered by the state of Ohio, please visit the Ohio Department of Higher
Education website at www.ohiohighered.org/sgs. Pennsylvania residents should refer to the Pennsylvania Higher Education
Assistance Authority website at www.pheaa.org. Students from other states should contact their state grant awarding
agency, if applicable, for more information.
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program (TEACH) - Amount varies based on
enrollment. Students must be enrolled in a TEACH-grant-eligible program and agree to teach in a high-need field in a school
serving low-income students as designated by the U.S. Department of Education. For more detailed information, please visit
www.studentaid.gov.
Work (Student Employment)
The Student Financial Aid Office awards Federal Work Study (FWS) to students based on the results of the FAFSA and financial
need. The FWS award is not deducted from students’ e-bill. Students receive a bi-weekly paycheck based on hours worked.
Limited funding available.
Once awarded FWS, students should visit the Career Services Center regarding student-employment requirements and job
opportunities at www.kent.edu/career. Students who are not awarded FWS may contact the Career Services Center to apply
for a University Funded position.
Loans
In order to receive federal loans, students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 undergraduate hours, 4 graduate hours). For additional
information on federal loans, visit www.studentloans.gov.
Federal Direct Student Loans
Students are eligible to receive subsidized and/or unsubsidized loans based on their financial need. They must also be enrolled at least
half-time (6 undergraduate hours, 4 graduate hours). Subsidized loans (need based) do not accrue interest while the student is enrolled
in school. The type of loan awarded varies based on the student’s financial need, up to the amounts listed below.
Dependent student maximum:
$ 5,500* - Freshman

$ 7,500* - Junior, Senior - pursuing bachelor’s degree
Independent student maximum:
$ 9,500* - Freshman
$ 10,500* - Sophomore

Federal Direct PLUS (For Parents Only)
Amount limited to cost of attendance minus financial aid. Available to parents of dependent students and/or the step-parent on
the FAFSA. Parent must complete a credit-based PLUS request at www.studentloans.gov. If credit is denied, student becomes
eligible for the independent student loan amounts listed above.
Federal Direct Graduate PLUS (For Graduate Students Only)
Amount limited to cost of attendance minus financial aid. Graduate applicants must exhaust all other Federal Direct Loan
eligibility and complete a credit-based Graduate PLUS request at www.studentloans.gov.
Federal Nursing Student Loan - Maximum award $3,000*. Available for nursing majors only. Limited funding available.
