Show pigeons are beautiful, elegant and proud. Breeders try to optimize these
features so that the pigeons they take to shows are perfect. But the aesthetic
beauty of show pigeons means that they are frequently kept as ornamental birds
in gardens.

For show pigeons to remain in perfect condition, they need good housing and
care together with a balanced feed. Our scientists, vets and pigeon specialists
have carried out research over many years. Versele-Laga can now offer a
Show range that meets the feed requirements of every show pigeon breed.
SHOW PIGEONS THROUGHOUT HISTORY
There is a huge number of show pigeon breeds. But the show pigeon can be traced back to a single
ancestor, the Rock Dove (Columba Livia). The Romans and later seafaring peoples brought the first
pigeons from the area occupied by modern Iraq, and they spread to western and central Europe.
Approximately 6000 years ago, pigeons were the first feathered pets. Pigeons are the only pets that
can be kept in complete freedom but which still seek the protection of humans.
Nowadays, the colour shades in the plumage and nuances in the feather structure vary enormously.
But the size, posture, bearing and appearance of the various breeds are even more important. Over
300 different breeds with highly diverse colour shades have been described and defined by European
standards. And more and more ‘new breeds’ are being introduced to the already extremely varied
world of the show pigeon.

FORM PIGEONS
As the name suggests, form pigeons are distinguished by their body form.
This category includes both true ‘giants’ such as the Roman and the
Hungarian Giant and normal sized pigeons such as the Briver Blackhead and
the German Show Homer. The Damascene, the oldest and best-known pigeon
breed, also belongs to this group.
Form pigeons also have typical characteristics such as markings and a
beautiful array of colours. Muffs, round tufts, crests and similar features
result in a great variety of form pigeons. They include the Coburg Lark, the
Lahore, the Strasser, the Show Racer and the Polish Lynxes.

WATTLE PIGEONS
This is a very small, exclusive group. They are distinctive because of their
nose wattles and, in some cases, the enlarged eye ceres. Breeds include
the Indian, the Carrier and the Bagdad. Some preparation and experience
is required to breed and keep these somewhat idiosyncratic breeds. Wattle
pigeons flourish best from their second or third year.

HEN PIGEONS
Hen pigeons hold their tail aloft, which gives them a chicken-like appearance.
The German Modena is the smallest breed of hen pigeon and is no larger
than a field pigeon. King Pigeons are some of the real heavyweights among
show pigeons. They can even weigh over one kilogram. These heavier
breeds rarely fly and can happily be kept outdoors. The Florentines and the
Huhnschecke (Hungarian) are breeds for the more experienced show pigeon
fancier.

CROPPERS
The various cropper breeds originated through the ability of the cocks to fill
their crop with air and to coo around the females with an inflated crop. This
ability was transferred to the females through selective breeding. Croppers
form a close bond with their owner, making keeping them very enjoyable. In
view of the size of the crop, it is very important for these show pigeons to
have a feed that is easy to digest.
Croppers can be subdivided into giants, medium-sized croppers and dwarfand Spanish croppers. In addition to the well-known breeds such as the Old
German Cropper, the Pomeranian Pouter, the Silesian Pouter, the Voorburg
Shield Cropper, the Steiger Pouter, the English Pouter and the Brunner Pouter,
there is a lot of interest in more specific breeds such as the Ghent Cropper
and the Dutch Cropper.

COLOUR PIGEONS
The main distinctive feature of these show pigeons is their colour variations
and unique markings. These breeds are completely undemanding with regard
to breeding and have excellent vitality. Breeds include the South German,
the Nuremberg, the Franconian, the Thuringian, the Saxon and the Swiss
colour pigeons.

TRUMPETER PIGEONS
Can you hear a trumpeting sound from the pigeon loft? If so, you are listening
to trumpeter pigeons. The variation in pitch is one of the most distinctive
features of these show pigeons. Apart from the Altenburg Trumpeter, which
has a smooth head and bare feet, most trumpeters have dense muffs and a
beak rosette (crown of feathers on the beak wattles). However, the Arabian
Trumpeter is a small pigeon with no plumage decoration and has a drumming
voice which is best compared with ‘laughing’.

STRUCTURE PIGEONS
The best known show pigeon, the fantail, belongs to the structure pigeons
category. The fantail owes its name to the way in which it holds its tail. It
looks like the fan-shaped tail of a peacock. The striking feathers mean that
keeping breeds such as the Chinese Pigeon, the Schmalkalden Moorhead,
the Jacobin and the Old Dutch Capuchin requires particular care and
attention.

FRILLS AND OWLS
These are among the oldest show pigeon breeds.
They have a neck frill (collar of feathers at the
front of the throat) and are short but broad in
stature. The beak may vary from short (Mo
Owl, German Colourtail Owl, Oriental Frill)
to medium-long (Old German Owl, Aachen
Lacquer Shield Owl). Owls are very calm show
pigeons and love receiving all the attention
they need.

TUMBLERS AND HIGHFLYERS
These are the largest of all show pigeons. Tumblers are divided into breeds
with long, medium-long and short beaks. In addition to the widespread
breeds such as the Cologne Tumbler, the German Long Face Tumbler, the
Danish Tumbler, the Magpie Tumbler and the Dutch Highflyer, many less
common tumbler breeds with a short beak, such as the Ancient Tumbler and
Königsberg Moorhead, have a growing number of fans.

PERFORMING PIGEONS AND ringbeaters
This is the smallest group of breeds. As the name suggests, these pigeons
have an extremely interesting flight pattern. During the mating season the
cocks of the Rhine and Belgian Ringbeater fly in circles around the females.

KEEPING SHOW PIGEONS
Pigeons make few demands in terms of housing. But you need to decide whether you want
your pigeons to fly around freely or in an aviary. This depends not only on the breed but also
on local conditions. If you opt for an aviary, you must provide as much space as possible.
The equipment in the pigeon loft will also vary according to the breed of pigeon chosen.
Do you want to breed from your show pigeons? If so, it is best to divide the pigeon loft into
two areas: a breeding pigeon area and an area for the youngsters. In the breeding pigeon
area, every pigeon must have its own nest box in order to prevent fighting. Ensure that your
nest boxes are large enough. As pigeons originally nested in caves, it is recommended that
approximately 1/3 of the front of the nest box should be darkened.
As regards the equipment in the young pigeon loft, you must bear in mind that youngsters
must be able to find the water and feeder immediately.
Ensure that the feed trough is large enough to enable all the pigeons to feed at the same
time. Also choose easy to maintain water bowls and equipment for providing minerals and
pigeon grit.

Do you want your show pigeons to be in perfect health? Then it’s important that they:
- are given enough vitamins, amino acids and minerals
- are protected properly against digestive disorders
- have optimal natural resistance
- receive enough energy and can also use it optimally

- have the necessary building materials available in the growth and breeding stages
Ordinary grain and show pigeon mixtures are not always sufficient to meet all these

THE IDEAL HOME FOR PIGEONS
•Ensure that the pigeon loft has plenty of large windows.
•Provide adequate ventilation.
•Ensure that your pigeon loft is always dry and contains no moist air.
•The loft door should preferably be on the south-east side.
•When building the pigeon loft, pay great attention to the functional equipment.
•Hygiene and cleanliness are extremely important if you want to avoid diseases.
Always ensure that the floor covering is clean and dry, and clean the feeders regularly.

FEATURES OF PLUS IMMUNITY concept+ PELLETS
VAM
VAM is a complex of stabilized Vitamins, Amino acids and Minerals that supplements the grains and
seed mixes in a balanced diet. After all a traditional grain mix shows major shortages in vitamins,
amino acids and minerals. The Plus I.C.+ pellets guarantee an adapted protein and fat content in each
mix (specifically adapted according to the season) and a balanced amino acid pattern for optimal
breeding, growth and muscle recovery after the race. The new Plus I.C.+ pellets are rich in essential amino acids, these
are those the body cannot make itself but are essential for life. It is also very important to realize that the storage life for
these vitamins, amino acids and minerals is longer than in an ordinary mix. Through the special extrusion process and
the related coating the pellet retains its explicit levels of vitamins for a minimum of 1 year. This means a considerable
added value for your Plus I.C.+ mix.
PRO-GROWTH
Here we have a unique combination of essential amino acids (these are those which the body cannot
produce itself), of an important source of calcium and an additional contribution of L-carnitin. During
the breeding period, new life must be built and therefore it is important to have extra building blocks
in the form of essential amino acids. These precious building blocks (proteins) are very important for
the pigeons, among other things for egg formation. The addition of L-carnitin increases the production of crop milk and
further stimulates the growth of puny little birds.
VEGGIE-PLUS
The extruded pellets of all Plus I.C.+ pigeon mixtures contain vegetables. Through a unique
procedure, vegetables are injected into the pellets during the production process. These vegetables
guarantee an improved ingestion of the pellets and supply a variety of condition supporting nutrients.
PRO-ENERGY+
The addition of lecithin and L-carnitine gives an optimal fat absorption and combustion, which
makes more energy available to the pigeons. Lecithin is a natural emulgator, which ensures that
fats, introduced by the diet, dissolve better in the intestine and that these fats can consequently be
absorbed completely. In addition MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides) are included in the new Plus I.C.+
pellets. These ensure acidification in the intestinal tract, which allow the pigeons to digest better and use the food better.

PRO-HEALTH+
Pro-Health+ is a unique combination of biological (natural) antioxidants among others with
beta-carotene (supplied via fresh carrots), lutein, extra vitamin E, organic selenium, polyphenol
bioflavonoids like pro-anthocyanosides (supplied by adzuki-beans) and vitamin C. By adding these
products in the right proportions we obtain an optimal stimulation of the immunity system, which
allows our pigeons to build up more resistance, and can combat illnesses more easily. In addition these carotenoids
also have a strong influence on the defence, they stimulate the humoral (formation of antibodies) and the cellular
(formation of white blood cells) immunity in the body. Grape-seed extract ensures that fewer free radicals are formed
that systematically break down the body cells. They protect the cell walls and offer cardiovascular support. It does not
have to surprise us that they contribute to a better general condition.
PRO-DIGEST+
Pigeons and in particular young pigeons, quite frequently have digestive problems. For that reason
experts at Versele-Laga included Florastimul and MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides) in the new Plus
I.C.+ pellets. These prebiotics are a dietary substance that can only be used by good bacteria and
also prevent the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the intestinal wall and their further growth. In
short your pigeons get stronger intestinal flora of their own with the new Plus I.C.+ pellets and are
less likely to have digestive problems.

Pro-Feather is a unique combination of essential fatty acids (omega 6 and omega 3) and sulphurous
amino acids. This combination ensures a quicker moult and softer, better quality feathers. The feathers
are composed of 86% keratin, a mineralized protein with high levels of sulphurous amino acids
in particular. Normal food is unable to provide such levels of sulphurous amino acids, hence the
importance of Pro-Feather. The essential fatty acids in Pro-Feather also play an important role in the
process of inflammation and immunity, which means that our pigeons will become sick much less readily and will be

Why extruded
pellets?
The Plus Immunity Concept+-pellets are extruded pellets that contribute to the prevention
of nutritional deficiencies.
Extrusion is a manufacturing process that is used for the preparation of high quality food
products for various animal species, including show pigeons. By adding water and steam,
the nutritional elements are cooked briefly. This ‘releases’ the nutrients and makes them
more readily available to the pigeons. The feed is easier to digest for the pigeons. The high
temperature during the extrusion process (more than 150 °C), kills most of the germs. This
process is different from the pressing where the nutrients are only compressed.
Pigeon fanciers are only too aware that the feed has a very strong influence on their pigeon’s
general condition. Scientific research has shown that a diet consisting of seeds only does
not supply enough nutrients for a balanced diet.

As a basic feed, you give your show pigeons a mixture of clean, healthy grains,

feed and, in particular, contains insufficient amino acids (including methionine

WHEN SHOWING
•Your pigeons should not be shown more than two or three times during a show season.
•It’s best to clean the feet with water. Be careful if you use oil afterwards.
•Use sharp nail scissors to correct a protruding beak.
• When perfecting the outline, use small, sharp scissors to cut off the feathers immediately
above the skin. The pigeon will feel no pain.
•Always use the correct basket to transport the pigeons. Every pigeon needs a separate
compartment. For breeds with foot muffs, it is sensible to set the bottom of the partitions
approximately 5 cm higher. This prevents damage to the feathers.

Vitamins and amino acids
Show pigeons are traditionally fed grain blends and, no matter how well-balanced, they will
never be able to provide all the building blocks a pigeon needs to ensure good processing
of all its bodily functions. Just like minerals, trace elements, many vitamins and amino acids
(especially the essential amino acids) are insufficiently present in grains, vegetables and
seeds. Major processes in the pigeon’s body can no longer take place as a result of the
vitamin deficiency. So vitamins are vital.
In addition there are a number of essential amino acids that the pigeon cannot make itself.
If a food or a supplement contains all the amino acids required for the development of the
body’s protein then it is satisfactory. Another major factor is that the percentage of digestible
amino acids must be as high as possible. After all there is a great difference in the quality
of the amino acids and proteins. The efficient conversion and use of the proteins and fats
provided can also be stimulated by giving L-carnitine, among others.

Hygiene and Anti-parasitics
Parasites like lice, mites and so on are an evil in any pigeon loft. In addition to the
immediate damage they can cause to the plumage, they also cause unrest among the
pigeons. Pigeons that sit restlessly in the loft for the entire day can never come to the
starting line in optimal condition. Consequently it is extremely important to treat pigeons
and their accommodation (lofts, baskets, aviaries) with an anti-parasitic.
Allowing the pigeons to bathe regularly is consequently also of the utmost importance for
keeping feathers in an optimal condition.
