SAVE THE DATE FOR THE
2 ANNUAL SNOWMASS TOUR AND HERITAGE FIRE
DINING EVENT HOSTED BY THE ALPINE MOUNTAIN REGION
DATES ARE THURSDAY JUNE 16TH – SATURDAY JUNE 18TH
Space will be limited since this is a weekday tour but for those of you that joined us last year,
you know the amazing roads available outside of Snowmass in addition to the spectacular time
had by all at the Heritage Fire event. For those who have not heard of the Heritage Fire - it is
part of the Annual Food and Wine events where Chefs compete by cooking over wood fires on
the mountainside. The amazing mix of fire cooked entrées (last year included game, chicken,
beef, lamb, Spanish Herring and even octopus) is presented in delicious ways and accompanied
by custom cocktails, wines and beers. This event is held at the bottom of the Snowmass Village
ski lift just steps from The Crestwood Condominiums that we will stay at again this year. Keep
an eye out on MotorsportReg.com for the event to open late April to early May.
Looking forward to those who can join us! Your tour hosts Dwight & Dana Kasten

Presidential Thoughts
John Mackin, President
WELL, SPRINGTIME in the Rockies has not cooperated
with the start of our driving season. Our annual Autocross School
and Autocross were canceled because of snow. We are looking at
rescheduling the event, but with our schedule already jam-packed, it
appears we will only be able to reschedule the autocross and not the
school.
Adam Vitale of Adam’s Polishes held a detailing clinic for us
on May 7th at his location in Louisville. His sessions are always
informative, interactive and entertaining. Weather was not optimum
as the skies opened up to pouring rain. Luckily his warehouse is large
enough to conduct the clinic indoors. Several of our serious Concours
addicts rely on his products. Because of a recent change in our event
schedule, he will also be hosting our June membership social at his
facility.
We held our first driver education at High Plains Raceway on
April 25th and 26th. Great job by event chairs Pete Romanesko and
Irina Butler in putting together a great event. The weather was cool
and mostly cloudy, but at least there was no snow. We were a bit
surprised by the attendance. Normally this event is the most well
attended of any of our DEs, but this year attendance was down by
a third from what we usually see. We are hoping this is an anomaly
and is not representative of what we will see for the rest of the year.
We have adjusted the track fees this year to break even on DEs
based upon traditional registration numbers and the increased track
expenses. It takes nearly $25,000 to pay for a two-day DE at High
Plains, so the financial exposure to the Club is high if attendance is
not as anticipated.
David and Jodi Schmidt did another fantastic job with their first
Gimmick Rally of the year. They had over 30 teams leaving in all
different directions to find the five stops in random order. It certainly
kept us on our toes. Stops included activities such at RC car racing
and a putting challenge on a golf course.
Mark Taylor led a great tour for us on the 21st of May. The
tour was originally to take us up over Guanella Pass, but that route
remained closed by snow. Mark found an interesting route via Echo
Lake, Evergreen Lake House, and Foxton to get us to Rustic Station
Restaurant in Bailey. Certainly these were some Colorado roads that I
have never traveled. The scenic drive had some serious hairpin turns,
and ended with a lunch enjoyed by all.
On June 5th we have the annual Colorado Concours d’Elegance
and exotic Car Show at Arapahoe Community College. This annual
Concours event benefits Ability Connection Colorado. PCA has been
an instrumental part of this event for 30+ years. It will have nearly
500 cars on display of many and varied marques. Porsches are always
a prominent part of this event, and we provide many of the judges to
inspect the cars entered in the Concours. Come out and see this great
collection.
June will also have our second DE of the season on the 11th and
12th. We moved the event by a week from our traditional weekend
so that it would not conflict with Parade. Weather should be good by
then!
A Northern Colorado Social in Fort Collins at Poudre Sports
Cars is scheduled for June 25th and on July 10 we have Ladies’ Day.
Event Chairs Lisa Hunsicker and Luann Dodge have been planning
for several months for a great event for the Ladies.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY!
All-day rain storms are
getting old. I want to drive with the top down (well, off for my
Targa!). May has been pretty busy with lots of activities, and
June looks to be more of the same. We had a beautiful day for our
monthly social at Sill-TerHar Motors on May 5th. The Porsche
Detail Clinic at Adam’s Polishes on May 7th had cloudy weather
with some rain, but a great turnout, and the Rally Quest on May
14th was a great deal of fun, luck and skill! I’m sure the Devil’s
Gate tour will be a good time as well (as I am writing this before
the tour). Likewise for the DE out at Pueblo Motorsports Park
on May 21-22. Thank you to everyone who made these events
happen! It’s a lot of hard work but a lot of fun, too! Find our
future events on our website: rmr.pca.org. We have our Denver
social on June 2nd, the wonderful, not to be missed, Concours
d’Elegance on June 5th, a Driver Education track day out at High
Plains Raceway on June 11th and 12th, the rescheduled tour to
get a “taste” of the HPR track and lunch at Helga’s on June 11,
the Steamboat Tour with optional overnight on June 18th, and
finally a social in Ft. Collins on June 25. That’s right! TWO
SOCIALS THIS MONTH! Just more reasons to drive your
Porsche! Are you going to the Porsche Parade in Jay Peak, VT?
If so, we would enjoy hearing about your experience and would
like to receive a little write-up and some pictures to share with
all the club members who couldn’t make it.
NAME BADGE ANYONE?
If you ordered a name badge back in March, please send me
an email! [email protected].
If you don’t have a name badge and would like one, please
email me the form found on our web page: rmr.pca.org.
Do you know someone interested in joining? Bring them
along to an event! We would love to have a larger family of
Porsche enthusiasts!
June RMR-PCA Membership Social at
Adam’s Polishes!
Please join all your Porsche friends for an evening at Adam’s Polishes. The evening will start with a
detail clinic with Adam himself demonstrating the fine art of detailing your Porsche.
Drinks will be served as you watch and listen to Adam’s hilarious adventures while he turns someone’s
less than perfect paint into something to marvel at.
Food from Lulu’s BBQ and drinks from Crystal Springs Brewery will be on hand to subdue your hunger
and quench your thirst. There just might be a give-away or two from the plethora of detailing products
that abound the hallways of this car care shrine.
We look forward to having you join us on what should be a very entertaining evening!

ON APRIL 24TH,
the RMR-PCA held its annual Edelweiss
Drive. The event was held significantly earlier than usual, as it
normally takes place around Memorial
Day. But as luck would have it, the
weather was spectacular! Eighty-eight
people and 45 cars—including a 918
Spyder in Mexico Blue—met at The
Perfect Landing Restaurant located at
the Centennial Airport. The morning
was brisk with a slight breeze, but by
the time we reached The Edelweiss
German Restaurant in Colorado
Springs, the temperature was 65° with
no wind and hardly any clouds! The
drive was roughly 70 miles through
the rolling foothills of Douglas County
as we piloted through the towns of
Castle Pines, Sedalia, Perry Park,
and Monument. Upon arriving at the
Edelweiss, we were escorted outside
into the lovely Biergarten to enjoy our
choice of special dishes for lunch. The
menu included Chicken Cordon Bleu, Wienerschnitzel,
Bratwurst, and Chicken Waldorf Salad! It was a great
opportunity to mingle and laugh with friends new and
old.

Show Us Your Car!
You have found the greatest group of car nuts on the
planet. Our monthly meetings are loaded with food, beverages,
networking with like-minded Porsche People and much
technical and social camaraderie. Some of the venues we’ve
been to before, and some places are new to us. All are interesting
and fun.
It’s all about the people. We all share the love of anything
Porsche-related. From real racing or just driving fast in a
controlled environment like on the track or autocross, to
meeting a mechanic or owner of a car just like yours for a
chat about problems and solutions, to washing and waxing in
preparation for the weekend tour or car show, you’ve found
the most precious resource for the care of your car and hobby.
Show us your car! Let’s see your smiling face! How about
a photo of your “garage queen’s” throne room! Share photos
from your favorite drive; share the story of your hunt for
the favorite car; share the triumph of your first rebuild. That
story and those pictures are worth immortalizing in print.
We’ve all been there; maybe you’re experiencing the
newness of that first special car. Perhaps you’re climbing the
ranks in a competitive series of races. Have you found the
perfect wash and wax routine to deliver the trophy? (Some
secrets are worth keeping.)
The point is that the club’s members are its true strength.
Your membership is your key to unlocking the wealth of
knowledge and friendship the club represents. The membership
socials are the first step to a deeper understanding, a deeper
relationship with your vehicle. Come share the experience!

EARLY MAY FOR ME meant PCA Club Racing at Circuit
of The Americas track, outside of Austin, TX. I couldn’t get there until
Friday night, but early the next morning, I headed to the track. I had
been to the track twice before—once for the inaugural Formula 1 races
and then a year later to run a marathon in and around the track. So I
can honestly say that I’ve “run” at COTA!
This time around, I wanted to help out with
timing and scoring, so I spent nearly the entire
weekend in the T&S suite, which overlooks
the start/finish line. Michael Wingfield, head
of PCA Club Racing timing and scoring,
and Franklin Kalk were there to take care of
the T&S duties for the sprint races and the
enduros on Sunday. There were also some
volunteers from Hill Country Region to help
run the results to the grid master and to keep
an eye on the drivers taking their mandatory
pit stops.
Michael had mentioned that the facilities
and equipment were very fancy at COTA, and
he did not exaggerate! We had huge monitors
to view the results from the timing software, plus there were three TV
monitors on the back wall so that we could keep up with everything else
going on during breaks in the schedule. The control room was also very
fancy, with several large monitors, showing the track at every corner and
at some other areas.
After the races and HPDE on Saturday, many of the volunteers and
corner workers met for beer and pizza at a local microbrewery. I turned
in for an early evening since I had only gotten about five hours of sleep
the night before.
On Sunday, I got more involved with helping out Michael and
Franklin, especially for the hour-long enduros. The rain mostly held
off, but there was enough rain to cause most of the drivers to put rain
tires on their cars. I was thrilled to be able to
ride in the Panamera pace car, although, sitting
in the backseat, I wasn’t able to take very good
pictures.
Fortunately, both enduros were mostly
incident-free, and although there were some
spin-outs, the drivers were able to get back
on the track. Zone 9/Rocky Mountain Region
member Joe Bank had an excellent race and
came in second overall. Congratulations, Joe!
I left the track soon after the second enduro
was done, as I needed to get to the airport for my
flight back to NM.
Coming up for me later in May is
Intermountain Region’s Amazing Rally, and I’ll
possibly join West Texas Region for their drive
to Sweetwater and to attend the Memorial Day
events going on that weekend.
Then in June, it’s Parade at Jay Peak! Hope to see several of you
around the Zone.

Get To The Car Show
THE 33rd ANNUAL
COLORADO CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE & EXOTIC SPORTS CAR SHOW
The big day is almost here! On June 5, 2016, the Rocky
Mountain Region of Porsche Club of America, along with
seventeen other car clubs and numerous corporate sponsors, will
host the largest gathering of priceless automobiles in Colorado.
The Concours was founded 33 years ago by RMR/PCA
members Tom Scott and Stim Kennedy and has broken records
each year since for money collected, cars displayed, and paid
spectator attendance. In 2015, approximately $158,830 gross
was raised, with a net of $119,596 benefiting Ability Connection
of Colorado (formerly CP Colorado). There were approximately
446 cars displayed, of which 118 were Porsches. This year, the
featured Porsches will consist of the “Mid-Engine Cars,” to
include the 550 Spyders, 904s, 914s, 916s, Boxsters, Caymans,
GT4s, Carrera GTs, and 918s, along with any special editions of
these models. If you own one of these cars or special
variants thereof, please consider registering your car for this very
worthwhile event. If you know someone who has one of these
cars, please urge him or her to register. To register, go to www.
coloradoconcours.org at $50 per car.
This year there are 18 car clubs participating in the show.
There will be a stunning array of Porsches, Audis, Datsuns,
Jaguars, Ferraris, Mercedes Benzes, NSXs, Corvettes, BMWs,
Alphas, Saabs, Maseratis, Lotuses, Shelbys and Cobras. PCA
members from all regions are invited. A special award will be
given to the member from the furthest location.
We will need your help! Here are the ways you can support
our fundraising:
1) Bring your special car out, to be judged or
displayed. Register at www.coloradoconcours.org.
2) The judges will base their scores on your car’s
condition, exterior paint, fit and finish, cleanliness of
interior, storage compartments, and engine. Displayed
cars will not be judged. For an additional $25.00 added
to the regular $50.00 registration fee, you may choose to
have your car judged against other marques within the
16
field instead of your Porsche Peers.
3) Volunteer to help us the day of the show. If you have a few
hours to help with judging, scoring, working the entrance gates
or parking cars, your help would be most appreciated. Please go
to www.coloradoconcours.org and go to the volunteer link or call
Terri Armstrong at 303-691-9339 for more information.
4) Be a spectator. Last year there were approximately 14,000
paid spectators. It is a great event for families and friends. Tickets
are $10 each; kids under 12 are free. If you’re able to donate a
little extra money, your donations are tax deductible.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this fun event.

AN OPEN INVITATION
to all PCA Club Racing
participants in the SPEC BOXSTER class
You are invited to join the Colorado Region SCCA in our
new SPB Class for our 2016 regional race season. Because of
the large number of really enthusiastic PCA Club Racing SPB
racers in the Rocky Mountain Region, we have formed a brandnew SCCA SPB class just for you! Well - OK, it is for everyone
but what we actually have done, and this is really cool, is that we
have imported the PCA Club Racing SPB rules word for word just
for the SPB class. That means if your Spec Boxster is 2016 PCA
CR legal it can race with us without modification. That goes for
the driver, too. Show up, present your PCA log book and your
competition license, and race. The point of all this is that you can
use these SCCA regional races to train for the big Club Race in
September. You don't have to tow for two days to get some serious
racing in anymore. When the big dogs from Texas show up at HPR
in September you will be ready.

Shopping for car interiors
by Heidi Frisch
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY as I pulled into the parking
lot of a well known upholstery shop here in town. I opened the door to
the shop and the front bell rang. After about 30 seconds, I recognized
Ron as he came out to greet me. He smiled and said, “Hey, it’s been
a while since I’ve seen you.” He and I gave each other a hug. Ron
looked happy to see me. “So let’s
take a look at what you brought
me to see.” He and I went out
to my car. Franny had sent me
on an errand to find some leather
that would hopefully match some
pieces that we needed for the
interior of the car. “I’ll be right
back,” he said, and Ron was off
inside the back-room of his shop.
He was just gone for a minute
or two and came back with
some material, and one matched
perfectly. “I think this one will
do!” He hooked me up again,
and this was not the first time.
I met Ron about five years
ago. I was fortunate to have
acquired my family heirloom
car, a 1958 356 A cabriolet
that at one time belonged to my great uncle. My uncle was the one
who purchased it as a second owner from Bill Boeing, Jr. in Seattle.
Although the car changed hands several times, it has been in our
family since 1961. “Miss Eva,” we named the car, because I was so
sick of everyone in the family called it “The Por-sh.” Eva was a 1950s
car, and she was actually named after Eva Gabor, the exotic Hungarian
actress from the 1950s, well known in the 60s and 70s for “Green
Acres.”
Miss Eva’s front seats and exterior paint were redone in 1990,
and the seats 20 years later were once again looking terrible and
showing some age. Luckily, the paint job on the front of the car is still
holding for now. Miss Eva was wearing an old, threadbare, tattered
dress wanting to go to the prom.
It wasn’t going to happen for her
looking like she did.
When I got the car from
my uncle in 2010, the seats were
ripping in more than one place
and needed to be redone. The
top on Eva had been replaced by
my uncle, but the rear window
wasn’t even clear anymore,
and you could barely look out
through it. There was no way
around it. It wasn’t so much that
I wanted a concours car, but I
wanted something presentable
that I could feel good about
when I got out of the car and
looked back at her. So many
356s had beautifully redone
seats, and I wanted that. We started to do some research, and after
close to a year and a half later, we finally found a good match.
Now, almost every year I meet a girlfriend or a wife of a car
enthusiast (sometimes men), and I hear something like … “Cars aren’t
my thing,” or “I don’t really care about the cars,” or “I don’t really
20
know anything about cars.” They may not be interested in driving.
Their significant others do that. I could go on and on. Not everyone
wants to get their hands dirty, or drive, or whatever. In fact, these
days the cars are becoming so incredibly complicated; it’s actually
becoming an art form to work on them. (Have you seen the BMW I8
bonnet and how it has to come off of the car with no fewer than two
people? Talk about crazy!) Anyhow, so I DO get it. Not everyone
wants to hear about oil changes, engines, and transmissions, shocks,
steering, etc. (or at least, they don’t really think they do). However, I
am going to challenges the spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands
of the club members who aren’t really car people to take another look
and try getting involved. You might see something different. You
might find out something about yourself, too. You might actually find
that some of this “car stuff” is more interesting then you first might
have thought.
As I went through the process of getting ready to replace the
leather on the seats of Miss Eva, we brought her to Ron’s shop in order
for him to get a good look and feel of her styling. Our 356 had a close
German replacement carpet done by my uncle several years earlier,
but the dash was still original, and all the knobs were still intact. We
wanted to keep the car as original as we could. I didn’t know anything
about what was required to replace the seats. Ron got out a bunch of
books. Wow! I felt like I was at a carpet or furniture store. This looks
really familiar, I thought to myself. Ron had dozens of books with
leather and fabric. It makes sense. It’s like picking out new fabric for
an older sofa or fresh paint for the room that needed redoing. How
fun and exciting to be able to pick out the fabric for your classic car,
whether it was leather or cloth. How very cool. Spouses, are you
really going to let your other half pick out the car seat colors without
you? Are you really going to let him or her have all the fun? It’s a fun
process, it might bring you together. I think you might be missing
out on some fun if you don’t …
Ron showed us how they would replace the springs when they
were in the process of redoing the seats. You know, if you have ever
have been on a long drive like to a Porsche Parade or maybe even to
Road Runner Region’s Fiesta New Mexico, you know what it is like
to sit in these cars for more than just a few hours. I realized then how
important that would be for my toosh, right?
In the end, Ron hooked Miss Eva up, and we even brought in
another car a few years later for him to skillfully fix its convertible top.
My point is, this is a learning process. It’s interesting, and I’ve learned
about thread (the thread was important on the car top), and sewing, and
fabrics, and how to care for the fabrics and leather in the car. It might
just be “car stuff,” but not all has to be boring. It’s really quite fun, and
you might even make some new friends, too. I know I have. Enjoy
your cars and all that needs to go into them. It can be really fun.

A WILD AND WOOLY WEEKEND II
August 25-28 of this year, we return to Snowmass for another
fantastic time in the mountains. Is it an HPDE? Sort of. Is it a
social event? Sort of. It’s really the best of both worlds!
Let’s begin with the highlights. How about spending four
days in the mountains at the best time of year to be out there?
Does enjoying the clean mountain air, stunning vistas, deluxe
accommodations, great food, great people, and some incredible
Porsche fun sound good? What if we threw in two days on a
private race track of the rich and famous for those so inclined?
Sound like a decent way to spend four days? We begin on
Thursday, August 25th when you drive up to beautiful Snowmass.
We are greeted by our hosts with a welcome reception with heavy
hors d’oeuvres and drinks at our base of operations, the gorgeous
Crestwood in Snowmass.
Friday, those who want to experience the thrill of driving
on an exclusive race track with the most beautiful backdrop of
any track we visit will head to Aspen Motorsports Park (formerly
known as Woody Creek Raceway). There, they will enjoy tips
(if desired) from our top-notch cadre of instructors and lap this
amazing circuit. The track is incredibly fun, keeping you busy
all the way around, and if you haven’t been there, you will soon
know why those who have raved about it for years afterward.
Friday evening you have on your own to explore Snowmass or
Aspen
Saturday, we return to the track for our last day there,
followed by a wonderful farewell banquet that night in Snowmass
Village.
Sunday, enjoy the area at your leisure, followed by a drive
home over stunning Independence Pass.
This weekend isn’t just for track junkies, however. For
everyone else, there is a huge variety of things to enjoy. See how
many times you can drive up and down Independence Pass, enjoy
the shopping, spas, golf, fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking,
rafting, horseback riding, and dining options in Snowmass and
Aspen. Head up the road to the Glenwood Hot Springs. The list
goes on and on.
Did I mention that this event is deluxe all the way? Our
accommodations at The Crestwood have full kitchens, amazing
views, fireplaces, and balconies, are beautifully furnished
and decorated, and are well positioned in Snowmass Village.
Swimming pool, hot tubs, and sauna are all at your disposal.
They’re so nice, you might not want to leave them. We are
offering one-, two-, and three-bedroom accommodations
(all with private baths), so you can choose from sharing the
24
weekend with friends or having a quiet place to yourself.
We expect this event to sell out very quickly, so plan on
signing up when registration opens, or you might be disappointed.
Note—mufflers are mandatory; if your car has straight
pipes, it will not be allowed to run. They have strict noise limits.
Space for trailers is also severely limited—if you need to trailer
your car and aren’t one of the first to sign up, we may not be
able to accommodate you, unfortunately.
Finally, any guesses why we call this “A Wild and Wooly
Weekend”? In October of 2010, workers building a reservoir dam to
supply water to Snowmass Village discovered fossil bones of a
young female mammoth. Plus, we think this will be a mammoth
event in the annals of PCA!
Costs & Registration:
Basic Registration including lodging ~ $500 per couple
depending on room selection (incl. 3 nights condo lodging, cool
goodies, etc.).*
Two Days On Track = $325 pp.
Meal Package (two lunches at the track, welcome reception
and farewell banquet) = $100.
*All units not booked 60 days prior to arrival will be released
for resale. Units will be available to the Alpine Mountain Region
Porsche Club on a space available basis after that date.

Detail Clinic at Adam’s Polishes
by Holly Jackson
Are you a self-detailer? If you are, hopefully you made it
to the Detail Clinic at Adam’s Polishes! Adam Pitale, owner of
Adam’s Polishes, was on hand to demonstrate proper washing
techniques all the way through the
final polishing steps. Even with the
overcast day we had and the potential
for afternoon storms, our RMR
members came out in force with
about 50 people showing up. Adam
and his crew had their socks blown
off as they were only expecting
maybe 6 people since the weather
wasn’t optimal for the kind of event.
But our club members are tough and don’t let a little weather
slow them down!
Adam chose a car from the parking lot that would be the
example car! Luckily the owner, Ralph Bronk, was a good sport
28
and gave his permission for Adam to work his magic on his car.
Adam wasn’t going to keep all the fun to himself and had some
volunteers help him out. The three volunteers had to clean a wheel
each. For their hard work helping out,
and getting dirty, they were given a
gift card as appreciation.
There
were
many
good
questions from the participants,
and Adam shared many good tips.
Many members were amazed how
his products work with each other
and gave funny examples of how
it is really bad to spray tire cleaner
on your paint! In reality, you had
nothing to worry about, it just needed
to be rinsed off, and even if it took
you over 30 minutes to do so, it was
still safe!
When it came time to learn
about polishing and using a polisher,
he asked if anyone who had never used a polisher would come
forward and try it out. Remember, “It’s best to learn on someone
else’s car!” Adam made this comment many times to get people
laughing, but he was really emphasizing just how easy it is and
that it would take a lot to ruin a paint job. Under Adam’s watchful
eye, people were able to try out products and techniques.
Towards the end, it started to rain. Then the rain turned to
small hail. Everyone ran to their cars and brought them inside the
warehouse! Everyone took the time to shop while waiting for the
skies to clear before heading home. I hope everyone had a great
time! Thank you Adam and everyone at Adam’s Polishes for all
your hard work making this a well received event!

the participants were tasked with finding

I Get Around
Danielle Badler, RMR/PCA Columnist
IT’S BACK,
the Cannonball
Redux.
Out of a cloud of tire smoke
comes news that the “Cannonball Run”
franchise will return to the big screen,
sometime soon.
You remember Hollywood’s acidinduced take on that legend of antisocial
motorsport, the Cannonball Baker Sea-toShining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.
No news on cast and cars, as of yet.
But word has it the film is being penned
by Etan Cohen, whose credits include
Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3.
Draw your own conclusions.
Do you remember the original race?
Do you? From the Red Ball Garage in
midtown Manhattan to the Portofino
Inn in Redondo Beach, CA? How the
whole thing was the brainstorm of that
legendary columnist for Car & Driver,
Brock “The Assassin” Yates? And how he
convinced bona fide driving legend Dan
Gurney to join him, in a Ferrari Daytona?
For the record, they accomplished
the feat in 35 hours and 54 minutes.
In 1971.
I know. I went on-line and looked it
up. I found the original coverage, from
what was then called Competition Press
& Autoweek.
And it all came back. The Polish
Racing Driver’s Association entry, a van
that was equipped to run the distance
without a fuel stop, carrying 298 gallons
of gas. They placed third.
Second was a ’71 Cadillac on
a “drive to deliver” mission for an
unsuspecting customer on the West Coast.
Last to finish was a 27-foot Travico
motor home. The Travico arrived after 57
hours and 25 minutes. Their only incident
“was a highway detour which caused a
sudden maneuver … and resultant spilling
of a large pan of hot lasagna on the van’s
shag rug.”
According to Autoweek, “Four of
the eight teams received a total of 12
speeding tickets along the route. The
most remarkable among them was a
citation given to Gurney in Arizona for
allegedly doing 135 miles per hour in a
70 mph zone.”
And then, lo and behold, I found a
reminiscence by Gurney, from around
2001. Here are some highlights:
“At the time (we) had no idea
that the Cannonball adventure would
spawn countless movies and fire up the
imagination of enthusiasts everywhere in
the world. I knew only a few years after.
… In kindergarten my kids were asked
whether their dad had ‘really run the
Cannonball.’ Spa? Le Mans? Indy? Never
heard of them! The things one becomes
famous for.”
Gurney said that, after the speeding
ticket, they decided to find out just what
their ride could do. They hit 172 mph,
with no issues.
“Kirk White, owner of the Ferrari
Daytona, offered me the car at a price
of $15,000. I couldn’t afford it. Now, 30
years later, the car is a priceless vintage
piece in Bruce McCaw’s car collection.”
Apparently Gurney almost didn’t
do the run at all. He was concerned
about “what kind of messages we were
signaling to the regular drivers on the
road.” But then his father-in-law, deathly
sick at the time, contacted him. He “…
thought it was a splendid idea, that life
is short. Carpe diem. Well it took only a
phone call … and I was on the next plane
to New York.”
And, so, today … will I see the new
movie? Fat chance, unless they have
lines like “Whatsa behind me is not
important,” as he breaks off the rear-view
mirror and throws it away.
No, today we’re verging on selfdriving conveyances, rolling appliances
which will be snapped up by a younger
population, intent on having nothing
interfere, at any time, with their on-line
interface. A cross-country run? They’ll
experience it in virtual reality, if at all. If
they care.
The movie, if it’s ever made, will be
an effort to reach us. We, who remember.
If we’re still around.
If you are reading this, your potential customers could be reading it too.

Get To The Track
Spring Speed Fix Recap
Peter Romenesko and Irina Butler
Photos by Eric Broadfoot
Many got their Spring Speed Fix at the first 2016 HPR
event. The weekend was well attended with a full complement
of instructors (30) on Saturday for our Green run group.
Weather was wonderful and void of any rain, and schedules
were expertly managed.
The Spring Speed Fix crowd on Saturday was given a
demonstration of the new rescue tools High Plains Raceway
has—a fire truck and the “jaws of life,” which were
impressively demonstrated. HPR now has showers available in
2016!
Participants, volunteers, and lunch time laps donated a
record RMR charity amount to the event charity, the Lung
Cancer Colorado Fund. Thank you. Car crazies are generous!
We encourage everyone to come back for a track event
ASAP. I’m sure that your adrenaline fix will continue at other
events this year. Our wonderful group of volunteer instructors
will be glad to guide you to Fast!

What We Do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by
participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
DRIVING EVENTS
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which
participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in advance). A
tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long
weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours
usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful
in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure
destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with
rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to
the event.
RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR
typically offers several as well. A number of tours
are usually offered at Porsche Parade.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which
contestants attempt to follow a course specified
by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on
public, paved roads, and speed limits are always
observed. The two major types of rallies are the
Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick
rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow
the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct
speed, as points are deducted for arriving at
checkpoints (the locations of which are not known
in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically
a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles
of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—
at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined
by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot.
Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out
around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear
for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long
intervals — typically only two or three cars are on
the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe
way to experience high-performance driving while
learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX
school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a
major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe,
controlled environment for high-performance
driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels
the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the
help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,
closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA
philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times
is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE
experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some
DE events are followed immediately by a time trial
event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify
their performance. Lap times may then be used
to measure personal improvement or for bragging
rights amongst your peers, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the
La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s
Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event.
A race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.
Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA
National) is required for competition, club racers
are serious and experienced drivers. The cars
they bring with them to the track can be quite
impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club
Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second
Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event
of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting
events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High
Plains Raceway which, when combined with a
Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling
weekend!
NON-DRIVING EVENTS
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins with
a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the
evening’s program. The content of the program
varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from
a recent event, or a guest speaker such as
accomplished Speed World Challenge racer
Randy Pobst.
Membership socials, unless otherwise stated,
are held the first Thursday of the month. Different
venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and
inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for
details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to
the Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like–a
session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake
bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by
experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom
are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year,
typically in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous
tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in as
close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number
of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,

Fun was had all around at the 1976 joint picnic between AMR and RMR. The event was held about seven
miles south of Deckers on the east of the road to Woodland Park. Festivities included a ferocious game of

On every first Saturday of each month (rain
or shine), a glorious gathering of cars puts on
an impromptu show dubbed “Cars & Coffee”
in Boulder/Lafayette in the parking lot at 95th
and Arapahoe.
Porsches, Ferraris, Cobras, Bentleys and
Lamborghinis have all been known to show
up as well as more American Muscle Cars
than you can shake a stick(shift) at!
It’s a great time, very casual, and lots of fun.
The show starts at 8:00 a.m., so grab a cup of
java, a bagel, and a camera and come check
out the biggest little car show in Colorado!
