PROTECTING
OUR PLAYGROUND AND
PRESERVING OUR LIVELIHOOD
On August 15, 2015, the SIMA Environmental Fund will
host the 26th annual Waterman's Ball. Over the past 25
years, the SIMA Environmental Fund has raised nearly
$7 million for organizations dedicated to protecting and
preserving our oceans, beaches and surf breaks. This
effort is as important today as it was 26 years ago and
the SIMA Environmental Fund needs your help.
As individual businesses, we each face unique concerns
and obstacles. As an industry, we face one common
issue that threatens our continued success as a whole:
ocean pollution. Poor water quality, watershed runoff and
irresponsible coastal development are negative trends
that threaten the entire surf industry. For every week
that a beach is closed due to unsafe bacteria levels, for
every surf break that is destroyed by development, for
every child that doesn’t have beach access, surf industry
companies see a direct correlation in lost sales. And for
many of us, these trends affect not only our work, but
also our play. It is incumbent upon every surf company
STEPHANIE GILMORE COURTESY OF ROXY
to support this ongoing effort to ensure that our ocean
playground remains healthy and accessible for our
customers—and ourselves.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Each year Waterman’s Weekend serves as the primary
fundraiser for the SIMA Environmental Fund, through
Friday’s Waterman’s Classic Golf Tournament and
Saturday’s Waterman’s Ball and Auction. By signing on
as a 2015 Waterman’s Ball sponsor, your company can
contribute to a vital effort to protect and preserve our
ocean environment.
With so many worthwhile causes seeking support, it’s
often difficult to assess where your company’s donation
can make the greatest impact. By sponsoring and
attending Waterman’s Weekend you can be assured that
your contribution will go toward solving specific oceanrelated environmental issues and thereby help ensure that
the surf industry and your business continue to thrive.
WHY SHOULD I BE A SPONSOR?
Waterman’s Ball sponsor packages offer a number of
valuable benefits, as well as recognition for your company
as a major donor to the more than 650 Waterman’s Ball
attendees, which include surf industry executives, Southern
California business leaders and friends of the environment.
In addition, the 26th annual Waterman's Ball is certain to
attract local and regional attention due to the appeal of
this year's honorees. This year's event will honor six-time
world champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore as Waterman
of the Year, Jane's Addiction frontman, Lollapalooza
creator and environmental activist Perry Farrell as
Environmentalist of the Year and legendary surfer, doctor,
and patriarch of the "First Family of Surfing," the late Doc
Paskowitz with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Depending on the level of commitment, sponsors can
expect benefits such as a table of 10 at the Waterman’s
Ball, guest rooms at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel during
Waterman’s Weekend, and an ad in the Waterman's Ball
program.
However, the biggest benefit of being a Waterman’s Ball
sponsor is the return on your investment in the ocean
environment. Your contribution will directly contribute to the
protection and preservation of our oceans, beaches and surf
breaks that are the industry’s playground and livelihood.
YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT!
On behalf of SIMA and the SIMA Environmental Fund,
we urge you to take part in the critical effort to help
conserve our ocean environment. We have included all
the information you’ll need to participate in this year’s
fundraising efforts. The 26th annual Waterman's Weekend
events are expected to sell out early so we encourage
you to complete the attached sponsorship reservation
form and return it with your payment as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance for your support.
BENEFICIARIES
2015 SIMA ENVIRONMENTAL FUND GRANT RECIPIENTS
The following environmental organizations have been carefully selected as recipients of the proceeds from
the 2015 Waterman’s Weekend fundraising efforts in the form of a SIMA Environmental Fund Grant. The
organizations were chosen based on their commitment of those funds to specific projects that will address
water quality issues, defend beaches and surf breaks, or provide education about ocean conservation.
5 GYRES INSTITUTE: Funds will be used to support "Surf
Ambassadors. 5 Breaks", a program to leverage surf icons to
build beach cleanup and plastic data collection at their favorite
breaks around the world.
REEF CHECK: Funds will be used for the continued expansion
of the Reef Check California program and its goal to improve
marine management in California through education, training
and community engagement.
ASSATEAGUE COASTAL TRUST: Dedicated funds will assist
with watershed patrols, water quality monitoring, advocacy
on priority water quality protection issues and educational
activities to inform and engage citizens in clean water promotion
efforts. The funds will also benefit Coast Kids, a family-focused
environmental education program.
SANTA BARBARA CHANNELKEEPER: Funds will assist their
Clean Water Advocacy and Enforcement Program which will
protect and restore water quality and aquatic habitats in the
Santa Barbara Channel and its beaches, creeks, and ocean
waters, and to defend the community’s right to clean water.
CLEAN OCEAN ACTION: Funds dedicated will support a
multi-year campaign to protect water quality. The goals of this
campaign are to increase monitoring of sites, locations, and
frequency; restore and increase funding for testing at the local,
state and national levels; protect and enhance our right to know
when sewage is found in waterways; and expand testing during
rain events.
HEAL THE BAY: Funds will support efforts to enhance beach
water quality, develop and implement pollution abatement
strategies, and better protect human health along the western
U.S. Coastline through Heal the Bay’s Beach Report Card.
KAHEA: Funds will support and sustain Ocean Protection
Program work, including legal advocacy for public beach access,
protecting native and endemic species, and ensuring fair and
equitable access to information about seabed mining in Pacific
waters.
NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY LAND TRUST (NSCLT): Funds will
be used to permanently protect Pupukea Paumalu and the local
waters, community stewardship of public beach access, and
other efforts to preserve Oahu’s North Shore.
OCEAN INSTITUTE: Funds will support the Watershed Education
Program designed for students for hands-on education about
the environmental impact of their behaviors. The program
addresses the urgent need for ocean conservation through said
hands-on educational activities.
ORANGE COUNTY COASTKEEPER: Funds will support efforts
to reduce the health threats caused by urban runoff pollution
in Orange County, Calif., through advocacy, enforcement,
education, collaboration, and water monitoring efforts.
PASO PACIFICO: Funds will be dedicated to protecting the
marine environment through reducing the organic and inorganic
pollutants entering rivers and marine environments, increasing
the awareness surrounding mangrove wetlands, and building
knowledge of coastal access laws. Efforts will also aim to
strengthen the Nicaraguan surfing community’s commitment to
ocean conservation.
SAVE THE WAVES COALITION: Funds will assist their World
Surfing Reserves program to preserve outstanding waves and
surf zones around the world; Endangered Waves program that
encourages communities worldwide to address threats to the
surfing coastline; and also their Chile Program that is designed
to reduce industrial pollution in several coastal areas with worldclass surf.
SEYMOUR MARINE DISCOVERY CENTER: Funds will be
used towards their school programs aiming to broaden the
participation of girls and young women in marine science,
education, and conservation programs. This education initiative
focuses on providing enrichment, volunteer and work skill
programs for girls from aging from kindergarten through
college.
SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE: Funds will be used to support the
Global Wave Conference, an annual international event bringing
together industry leaders politicians, activists and academics to
promote the protection of unique and irreplaceable surf spots
worldwide.
SURFING EDUCATION ASSOCIATION: Dedicated funds will be
used towards the Waikiki Beach Sand Replenishment Project,
which will monitor tidal current pattern flow change and sand
movement due to replenishment.
SURFRIDER FOUNDATION: Funds will enable efforts to save,
improve and protect surf locations, protect the quality of water
in the surf zone, ocean environmental education. Initiatives will
address clean water, surf enhancement, ocean conservation
education, surf break protection and other coastal issues
through increasing public awareness of the existing threats to
our water resources.
WILDCOAST: Dedicated funds will support coastal ecosystem
conservation projects that will protect critical wildlife habitat,
ecosystem services and coastal public access in San Diego
County and Baja California.
WISHTOYO FOUNDATION: Funds will be used to protect the
ecological integrity and water quality of Ventura County’s
waterways, primarily through Ventura County specific water
quality projects, which are vital natural resources for County
residents, and visitors.
