About a Boy Hey Mark, I heard about your New Year’s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. The novel I recommend to you is called “About a boy“ by Nick Hornby. I will present the book to you in a way that you will want to read it. But first, this is the cover. Will Freeman is a hip Londoner who one day realizes that his friends are all involved with the responsibilities of married life and that leaves him alone in the cold. Pretending to be a single father, he starts to meet single mums, confident in his ability to leave them behind when they start to ask for a commitment. But Will's hope of a continued bachelorhood is interrupted when he meets 12-‐year old Marcus, who is -‐ in many ways -‐ his complete opposite. It is very interesting to see how he deals with this new situation. You have to read the book because it really is for everybody. I like this book, and not only because it is one that everybody likes. Yours, Paul-‐Moritz before i fall Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year’s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. Therefore I want to recommend the novel “before I fall” to you. The novel “before i fall“ by Lauren Oliver is about the popular and arrogant Samantha Kingston, who is forced to live the day of her death eight times. It all starts on 12 February, when she and her friends drive home from a party, being very drunk. There is an accident and Sam (Samantha) dies. However she wakes up once more and is going to relive the last day of her life (Friday, February 12) again and again, until she gets the mistakes she made right. Those seven days are always a little different from the day before and her behavior is changing day by day. The book deals with many topics of our everyday life. For example it shows the different perspectives of teenagers and their living conditions. In addition it tells us how the way we deal with each other can influence the behavior and feelings of other persons in the real world. I hope I could help you to choose your next book. Yours sincerely, Alexandra The Christmas Mystery Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I hear about your New Year’s Resolution 2015 where you announced that you want read a different book every other week. I have a suggestion what you can read next week or maybe next Christmas because I want to introduce the book ‘‘The Christmas Mystery“ written by Jostein Gaarder to you. This book is about a young boy who finds a self-‐made advent calendar in a bookshop. When he opens the first window, the first part of an extraordinary story about a small girl, who travels back in time to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ, falls out. The boy finds out about the man who made the calendar and the girl who disappeared on Christmas forty years ago. This book is an entertaining thriller for every age. I strongly believe you should take this book, because it is my favourite book I read in English. I’m a German student who loves reading very much, but normally I read in German. I’m very excited if you decide to read this book. I hope I could help you to make a choice. Yours sincerely, Linda The Carbon Diaries 2015 Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year´s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. “The Carbon Diaries 2015“ by Saci Lloyd is about a young woman called Laura Brown. She is a college student in London and tells the readers about the struggle England faces as the government tightens its grip on carbon rations. Laura plays in an eco-‐punk band. Then rioting students force her to flee the city. On the European tour Laura finds herself among a series of dangerous events. “The Angels”, it´s the name oft the band, have always sung about fighting corruption. It´s time for Laura to join the underground resistance movement … In my opinion the book is good and I can recommend it. The novel is about an important and relevant topic – just look at the title!. Furthermore the book concerns all people and you must read it – even if you prefer non-‐fictional books! Yours, Leander The Carbon Diaries 2015 Hello Mark, I heard about your New Year’s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. The young adult book I want to present is ‘‘The Carbon Diaries 2015‘‘ written by Saci Lloyd and published in 2009. The book is about that global warming has gone to a point that England has decided to ration Carbon and that affects the life of the 16-‐year-‐old Laura, who writes into a diary how she lives with the new situation in England. The book is very interesting because it made me wonder how far away the 2015 of the novel is from the 2015 we live in now . . . I hope you read the book because global warming concerns everybody! Yours, Vitus Coming of Age Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year’s resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. My book recommendation for you is the novel ‘Coming of age’ by Lori Hewett. I write a short summary of the book, which you can read to get an idea about the novel. The novel “Coming of Age” written in 1991 by Lorri Hewett is about life and racial problems in American high schools. It was Lorri Hewett´s first book she wrote when she was 18 years old. In her opinion there was not enough fiction available, which dealt with the experiences of black young adults, so she decided to write this novel when she was still in high school. She knew from her own experiences that it is not easy to grow up as a black person. The novel describes the life of the three main characters AJ, Ruthie and Erika. AJ is the most famous, black football player at Centennial High School, Erika is light-‐skinned and his girlfriend, but they do not really love each other, it is more a sexual relationship they are having. In the development of the story AJ gets to know the teachers´ favorite student Ruthie. First he does not like her, but as he gets to know her better, he realizes that she is really special person. There are also many other problems between the different groups at Centennial High, but while the story develops, some of the main characters start finding their identity. I strongly believe you should take this book because it is the best novel I have ever read. It will become your favorite book, because – like me – you will not be able to put the novel down because you want to know the ending of the story. I highly recommend this exiting novel, because it is a nice book for every age. I hope you go to the next book shop to buy this novel and then tell me your opinion about ‘Coming of Age’. Yours sincerely, Celina The Fault in our Stars Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year’s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. I would like to suggest the book “The Fault in our Stars“ by John Green and now I explain to you why you must read this book. Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16-‐year-‐old teenager with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs, attends a cancer patient support group because her parents want her to. During this support, Hazel meets the 17-‐year-‐
old teenage boy Augustus Waters, who lost a leg because of an osteosarcoma. They spend more and more time together and they begin to fall in love with each other. Furthermore, they decide to brace themselves against their destiny. Together they fly to Amsterdam to meet Peter van Houten, the author of Hazel´s favorite book. The meeting with the famous belletrist turns out differently than expected and their trip changes both of their lives with long-‐lasting effects. I hope you decide to read this unusual love story. I read this book and I also watched the movie – and I was really touched. I could not put the book down and was really drawn into the story. Best wishes from Germany, Anabel Double Helix Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I have heard about your resolution for the New Year that you want to read a new book every two weeks. I think I have a very good book for you because I think you are interested in biology and like books with many secrets. The book is called `Double Helix`. It is a novel and was written by Nancy Werlin in 2005. It is about the 18-‐year-‐old Eli Samuels, who gets a job working for a famous molecular biologist named Dr. Quincy Wyatt. There is a mysterious connection between Dr. Wyatt and Eli’s parents, and all Eli knows about the connection is that it has something to do with his mother, who suffers from Huntington's disease. Because of the connection between Dr. Wyatt and the Samuels family, Eli's father does not like Eli working there. The job is perfect, and the wages are great, but Eli notices quickly that Dr. Wyatt is a little too interested in him. Later on, as Eli continues to work in the lab, he discovers with the help of Kayla Matheson … But read for yourself! It is a very good and entertaining book so I advise you buy it quickly. It is a novel and I know you want to read non-‐fictional books, but I hope you enjoy it nevertheless! Yours, Valentin Thirteen Reasons Why Hey Mark, I heard about your New Year´s Resolution 2015 and I would like to recommend my favourite book called “Thirteen Reasons Why“ by Jay Asher to you. Here is a short introduction into the story: High-‐school student Clay Jensen returns home one day and finds a package waiting for him. Inside the package there are seven cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Backer, a classmate who killed herself a fortnight earlier. Clay listens to the tapes to see how he fits into the puzzle of her death, then he is to mail 13 mails to a list of persons. There are 13 reasons why Hannah decided to commit suicide and Clay is one reason. I hope you will choose my book because it`s interesting, gripping and thrilling. I hope the problem of teenage suicide get into peoples focus with the help of your publicity. Yours sincerely, Daniel My Sister´s Keeper Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year´s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. I would like to give you a book recommendation. The novel is called “My Sister´s Keeper“. It is about a girl called Kate who gets the diagnosis of leukaemia. She needs bone marrow and other transplantations but her parents and her big brother are out of the question. Her parents decide to make a test-‐tube fertilisation to increase her chance to stay alive with the new baby. Since her birth Anna, who is the main character of the novel, has to make donations of all kinds to her sister Kate. When she is eleven Anna starts to defend herself but her mother will not listen to her. She just thinks about how to save Kate´s life. Anna decides to take her mother to court. All in all, the novel “My Sister´s Keeper“ is a very good and gripping book which has been turned into a highly successful movie. I strongly believe you should read it because the book is very emotional and has a surprising twist. Yours sincerely, Katharina Midnight Driver Hi Mark , I heard about your New Years’s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. My name is Hendrik and I think the book “Midnight Driver” by Jordan Sonnenblick might appeal to you.  The headless gnome in their neighbour´s garden was not Alex's fault; it was his mother's. Or maybe his father's. Either way, if his father hadn't run off with his third-‐grade teacher, then his mother wouldn't be on a date and Alex wouldn't need to get drunk by himself, steal his mother's car and smash a $500 lawn gnome. As far as Alex is concerned, he shouldn't be punished for the damage, but that's not how his mother, his lawyer and the juvenile court judge see it. To pay back the $500, Alex must do 100 hours of community service at a local nursing home. There, he is assigned to be a companion to Sol, a man known for his ability to make volunteers run home in tears. Sol frustrates Alex, but he can't get the judge to change her mind about the assignment. It's looking like the longest 100 hours of Alex's life -‐-‐-‐ until the day he plays his guitar for Sol. As Sol and Alex connect over music, Alex learns that Sol wasn't always the difficult old man he is today. Sol had an interesting career, along with a wife and daughter, but now the flowers he buys every Hanukkah for his daughter go untouched. Despite his own troubles regarding human relationships, Sol is convinced that Alex should be in a romantic relationship with his best friend Laurie. Alex, however, isn't so sure. The popular Laurie couldn't possibly like him. Or could she . . . Find out for yourself! Jordan Sonnenblick, a teacher, was inspired to write this book by all those he heard saying things like, "I'm sorry, but..." and "I'm sorry if..." Alex, like the people who make qualitative apologies, doesn't want to take responsibility for anything he does. It's always someone else's fault, and there are always excuses. Forced by a judge, Alex starts to see that love, truth and responsibility are powerful things -‐-‐-‐ maybe almost as powerful as one of Laurie's karate kicks. I hope you will enjoy this great book. Yours, Hendrik Wish you were dead Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year´s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. I suggest you should read the book "Wish you were dead" written by Todd Strasser. It is a mystery book that takes place in Soundview, a very safe place in New York. The main character is a high school student named Madison Archer. As the anonymous blogger an-‐G-‐kozzt she tells her readers about the school life in Soundview. Furthermore the blogger wishes death on some popular students, number one on the list is Lucy Cunningham. Shortly after the blog entry Lucy disappears. As Lucy´s friend Adam disappears too it is clear that a murderer is in the village. But as the blogger realizes that her wishes become true, she gets frightened. The situation is getting worse as Lucy´s corpse is found and another girl disappears. Madison, however, is the one who gets on the murderer´s track and suddenly finds herself in a dangerous situation. The reader of the book is confused by any revelation. No part of the book is boring because always something exciting happens. It is a book that everyone should read. I hope I have been able to convince you of reading this novel. Yours sincerely, Michelle Struck by Lightning Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year’s Resolution 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. In my English lessons I read the novel “Struck by Lightning’’ written by Chris Colfer. When I start to read the book I was not impressed, because I don’t like reading, but the longer I read it, the better it got. At the end of the book I was very enthusiastic. The novel is about the unpopular Carlson Phillips, who wants to set up a literary magazine at his school. He recruits new members through blackmailing by finding out the secrets of other students. His victims are the most popular students of his school, like the captain of the baseball team or the cheer-‐ leaders. He successfully gets all the students to write for the literary magazine, so for the first time in his life, he is truly happy. I liked to read the book, because I like the story, also the book is easy to read and easy to understand. All in all I hope you will choose ‘’Struck by Lightning’’ as one of your books for your reading club. I hope you will be as excited as I am. Enjoy the book! Best wishes, Carlotta iBoy Dear Mr. Zuckerberg, I heard about your New Year’s Resolutions 2015, which is to read a new book every two weeks. That is the reason I am writing to you, because I want to suggest my favourite book of 2014 to you. I read it last month and I was excited about this novel. The book is called ‘iBoy‘ by the young-‐adult author, Kevin Brooks. A teenage boy is granted the powers of an iphone after an ‘accident‘ has embedded one of Apple’s popular mobile devices in his brain. The book was published in 2005 and will be turned into an action movie in 2015, with Will Pouter as the main actor. First Tom Harvey, the main character, is a normal teenager with no talents or interesting skills. But after his accident, Tom wakes from a coma to discover that fragments of a smartphone are still in his brain. Returning to normal teenage life is impossible. But now he has developed a strange set of super power. That is his chance to take revenge on the boy group who raped his friend Lucy. I think it is a good reason to read the book because when the movie comes into the cinema you have heard about the book and know the story. And I think it is interesting to see how the movie was produced and if it is as great as the book. I would be very excited if you read and like the book although I know that you prefer non-‐fiction. However, this is very real . . . I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Lisa
