INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The park system study categorizes the green spaces
of the area into playgrounds, passive green space, and
open green space. The walkability of this neighborhood
is encouraged through a proposed pedestrian
and bicycle network both within and outside the
neighborhood that connects the existing green spaces,
existing bicycle trails, and areas of attraction.
Dana Brown & Associates (DBA) was asked by the
Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association (FSJNA) to
develop a master plan for Desmare Playground located
at 3430 Esplanade Avenue in the city of New Orleans.
The neighborhood association’s goal was to revamp
the currently worn down playground and make it a more
welcoming place for children in the Bayou St. John
neighborhood.
Desmare Playground is the only playground in the
northern part of the neighborhood, but within just a
few blocks is Alcee Fortier Park, which offers a more
passive experience. The only other playground in the
neighborhood is Easton Park which has play structures,
ball fields, andEspenan
swing sets.
PARK SYSTEM STUDY
PARK SYSTEM STUDY:
The Faubourg St. John neighborhood in New Orleans
is characterized by its streets lined with fantastic live
oaks, proximity to City Park, and, of course, Bayou St.
John. Another one of the unique features of this area is
its abundance of green spaces, which are well-cared-for
by the neighborhood.

The DBA and FSJNA team organized a way to involve
the Bayou St. John community in the playground
planning process. On January 26, 2013 Desmare
Playground held a kid’s charrette where neighborhood
residents were invited out, with their children, to have a
chance to draw and express what they would like to see
in the new playground redesign. This was also a way
for residents to learn about the project and the design
process, as well as fund raising ideas and opportunities.
KID’S CHARRETTE
KID’S CHARRETTE:
The event was a success with a number of families
showing up and showcasing their creativity. DBA
supplied white boxes and sidewalk chalk for the kids to
draw playground ideas. These ideas ranged from swing
sets to duck ponds. This charrette made evident the
community’s love for the park space.

MASTER PLANNING
MASTER PLANNING:
The master planning process was intended to bring
the Desmare Playground to a schematic design level
that included new playground equipment (in conjunction
with Dyna-Play), signage, paving, drainage, plantings,
and site furnishings. The new master plan includes
features such as new play structures for different
age groups, a new exercise station for adults, more
integrated circulation, overhead canopy areas to provide
shade, and a rain garden to manage stormwater on site.
Other site features include a water fountain that is dog
friendly, waste receptacles, and a new bleacher area for
the adjacent school softball fields.
All new design features in the park are ADA accessible,
including the aggregate paths. The existing basketball
court has been repurposed to hold play structures for
older children as well as a tricycle track for younger kids
to cycle around.
The design also includes a new facade for the
playground to be more welcoming and visible from
the street by raising the tree canopy along Esplanade
Avenue and the install of more attractive fencing. The
playground has a new entry with benches and plantings,
as well as a seat wall where chaperons can watch over
the children while they play.
