Drinking Water Quality
What Are Drinking Water Standards?
Under the authority of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), EPA
sets standards for approximately 150 contaminants in drinking water.
For 90 of these contaminants, EPA sets a limit, called a maximum
contaminant level, or requires a certain treatment. Water suppliers
may not provide water that doesn’t meet these standards. Water that
meets EPA standards is safe to drink. The Safe Drinking Water Act
(SDWA), which celebrated its 41st anniversary in 2015, is the main
federal law that ensures the quality of Americans’ drinking water.
Under SDWA, EPA sets standards for drinking water quality and
oversees the states, localities, and water suppliers who implement
those standards. Drinking water, including bottled water, may
reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some
contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily
indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about
contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by simply
calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Important Information
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in
drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised
persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy,
persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with
HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and
infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people
should seek advice about drinking water from their health care
providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen
the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial
contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline
at 1-800-426-4791 or online at www.epa.gov/safewater/crypto.html.
Nationally, most water systems use a ground water source
(80%),but most people (66%) are served by a water system that
uses surface water. This is because large metropolitan areas tend to
rely on surface water, whereas small and rural areas tend to rely on
groundwater / Wells . In addition, 10-20% of people have their own
private well for drinking water.

Terminology, Contaminants that may be present in source water
include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which
may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural
livestock operations, and wildlife. Inorganic contaminants, such as
salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban
storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil
and gas production, mining or farming. Pesticides and herbicides,
which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, storm
water runoff, and residential uses. Organic chemical contaminants,
including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can
also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic
systems. Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring
or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.
WATER REPORT
Eufaula has a total of eight deep groundwater wells. Presently, seven
wells are operating and draw water from the Gordo Formation of the
Tuscaloosa Group Aquifer. We currently treat our water by adding
Chlorine for disinfection and Fluoride to aid in the prevention
of tooth decay. The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of
Eufaula has completed and adopted a Source Water Assessment
Plan to help protect your public health and safety by minimizing
contamination of the aquifers from which our wells draw water.
Copies of our Protection Plan may be obtained by contacting
Michael Taylor at 334-687-1225. This program along with our
Groundwater Guardian and Wellhead Protection Plan help educate
the public about groundwater protection.

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs,
and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in

We updated our Capital Improvement 10 year plan. We identified over $15 million of needs through 2024. We secured funding for $4.0 million of the higher priority
needs through the issuance of Bonds in 2014. These projects will be completed in 2016 and include replacing galvanized water services and main lines in the core of
the City, upgrade of some of our 36 sanitary sewer pumping stations, upgrade of water and sanitary sewer lines in the Edgewood area. In the next few years, we will
also be involved in an additional $9 million of improvements to our water and sanitary sewer systems relating to the Carbo expansion, wastewater treatment updates,
water tank rehabilitations and other City projects. We continue to work to improve our systems for our customers.
