TWO-DAY
TUESDAY
100. TUESDAY
102.
Emotionally Healthy Leadership:
Foundations
A Solitude Retreat Day Plaza Ballroom A
Participants are invited to a day of quiet prayer
and silence at the Mother Cabrini Shrine in
Golden, Colorado. Located in the foothills above
Denver, participants will meet in the Stonehouse,
a retreat house listed on the Colorado’s registry
of historic buildings. A bus will leave from the
Sheraton Denver Hotel at 8:30 a.m., returning
to the hotel by 5:30 p.m. The retreat will offer
extended times of silent prayer and reflection
as well as shorter times of listening to biblical
readings and prayers. Participants will end their
time together with Holy Communion. Individual
spiritual direction will be available with the
leaders as time permits. Silence will be observed
throughout the retreat. Lunch will be served at
the conference center and shared in silence.
Space is limited to 25 participants. (Participants
pay an additional fee of $45 for the retreat.)
This practical workshop will lay the foundation
for providing leadership for a transformational
spiritual formation paradigm that integrates
emotional health and contemplative spirituality
to the pastor/leader first, then the leadership,
and finally, the congregation as a whole. Each
participant will construct a genogram of their
family of origin and consider its impact on their
pastoral formation, marriage (if applicable), and
efforts to build a healthy, missional community.
Participants are strongly encouraged to read
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter
Scazzero (Nelson, 2006) prior to the workshop.
200. WEDNESDAY Emotionally Healthy Leadership:
Slow Down to Lead with Integrity Plaza Registration
Dennis Anderson is senior pastor at
Pilgrim Covenant Church in Granby,
Connecticut.
Plaza Ballroom A
First, this workshop will address the
indispensable place of contemplative spirituality
(e.g. the Daily Office and Sabbath-keeping)
to slow us down to be with God and to build
a healthy church where people do not live off
other’s spirituality but intentionally develop their
own personal relationship with God. Second,
we will practice emotionally healthy skills vital
to begin transforming the way the church, as
the new family of Jesus, relates to one another.
Finally, we will look at how to integrate these
transformational concepts into the entire church.

Evangelism: Holistic and
Contextual Approaches Honest to God Evangelism Plaza Ballroom D
Participants in this workshop will explore the
themes of honesty, humility, and graciousness
as they relate to effective evangelism. We will
distinguish between recruiting members and
making disciples. Participants will discover
creative ways to engage people in spiritual
conversations and they will explore strategies
for helping people to overcome fear and anxiety
with regard to evangelism. We will focus on
moving broken people one step closer to Jesus
in the context of an “I’m not okay—you’re not
okay” church. Living out the value of the new birth requires
disciples who understand the missional call of
the church so that new births keep occurring!
This workshop examines important aspects
of biblical evangelism, that is, evangelism that
attempts to be faithful to the biblical version of
the kingdom of God. We will examine its holistic
nature, understanding proclamation as it relates
inseparably to compassion, mercy, and justice.
And, we will examine the contextual nature of
evangelism, examining ways that the church
can increase in multicultural competency for
more effective communication of the gospel. Plaza Court 1

Veritas provided the language. EPIC provides
the how-to. As a follow-up workshop to Veritas,

healthy missional change. Many pastors and lay
leaders lead change from the seat of their pants.
EPIC helps us to think through the process of
change sequentially from beginning to end.
EPIC does not tell churches what to change,
but how to change. Attending a Veritas event
or watching the Veritas DVD is a prerequisite to
attending EPIC.

Trying to Get It Right Governors Square 15
The primary task for members of congregations
is to discern their identity and purpose as the
people of God and to live out that identity in
the world. More than conventional patterns
of leadership and organization are needed to
help the people of God accomplish this task.
This workshop invites participants on a journey
toward understanding of leadership and
organization for maturing congregations.

The Big Story: Sharing the Gospel in an
Increasingly Unchurched Culture Working with the Poor: Principles and
Practices of Empowering Communities
HOW? Evangelism in a New World Plaza Ballroom D
Plaza Court 7
Do we present a gospel that is too small? If our
gospel is concerned primarily about the afterlife,
our unchurched friends will find our message
arrogant and irrelevant. This seminar will present
a clear, field-tested way to present a larger
vision of the gospel—one closer to what Jesus
taught—in a way that may connect more with
our friends who live in an increasingly unchurched
culture, while encouraging believers to share a
faith that feels more truly like good news.
We will look at Covenant World Relief case
studies involving transformational community
development around the world, and encourage
greater involvement of local churches.
The world is rapidly changing. Thankfully, the
gospel never changes, yet we need to explore
new ways to communicate the good news
and begin to think about new questions and
approaches to move mission and outreach
forward in our churches and ministries. Come
and learn what questions to be asking of
yourself and your congregation, best practices
for effective outreach, and discover a holistic
approach to evangelism in your church. James Choung is divisional director of
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in San
Diego, California. 206.
Let Justice Roll Down Plaza Court 3
What is the prophetic ministry of the church
in society? When should the church move
from ministries of compassion into matters
of advocacy and justice? Exploring the rich
tradition of the African American church
and fresh examples of justice ministries, this
workshop will help leaders develop biblical
principles and strategies of civic engagement for
lasting community change. Adam Edgerly is lead pastor at Newsong Los
Angeles Covenant Church in Los Angeles,
California. Stephen “Cue” Jean Marie is
discipleship pastor at Newsong Los
Angeles Covenant Church in Los
Angeles, California. David Husby is director of Covenant
World Relief in Chicago, Illinois. 209.
Outreach Opportunities for the Town
and Country Church Lisa Orris is director of evangelism for
the Department of Church Growth
and Evangelism in Chicago, Illinois.
Tower Court C
To experience new birth in our congregations,
we must proclaim the new birth to our
communities. The town and country setting
provides unique opportunities to do this. Join us
as we explore outreach opportunities for the
town and country church.
Brian Kelly is senior pastor at McLane
Church in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. 210.
Reshaping the Masculine Soul in the
Words of Jesus Governors Square 14
This workshop will identify the gender-related
struggles men face today (passivity, father
wounds, sexual brokenness, identity, spirituality)
in light of the Sermon on the Mount. A two year
discipleship journey through the Sermon will be
presented as a way of transformation and a way
forward for a church-based men’s ministry.
207.
Mark Meredith is lead pastor at
Community Covenant Church in Eagle
River, Alaska. New Light through Old Windows: The
Old Testament and the New Birth Governors Square 16
211.
“New birth” is not an Old Testament term, but
the Old Testament understands that God’s
mission is to transform both people and his
creation. This workshop studies Old Testament
episodes and prophesies, which feature that
mission of transformation and, hence, shed new
light on what it means to be “born again.”
Thriving in the New World Robert Hubbard is professor of
biblical literature at North Park
Theological Seminary in
Chicago, Illinois. Plaza Court 5
213.
Coaching: The Essential Tool for
Discipleship Plaza Court 2
The typical pastoral staff has great intent and
plans, but lacks any formal training or skills
to help individuals integrate their knowledge
gained. Imagine having a dialogue strategy to
help individuals determine goals, unlock their
own answers, overcome fears, and experience
transformation. Plus, learn how to develop a
coaching culture in your church to maximize
your discipleship process and lessen your
pastoral burden and frustration.
Brian Rhen is pastor of people
development at Peninsula Covenant
Church in Redwood City, California.
Kathy Sandquist is president and
coach at New Day Ventures in
Redwood City, California. Governors Square 17
The world we live in is becoming post Christian,
postmodern, and multiethnic. What do those
words mean, and how will it affect our church?
What does this mean for me as a Christian
leader? What will it take to thrive in this new
world? This seminar will focus on the alignment
of culture, the gospel, and leadership.

the Department of Church Growth
and Evangelism in Chicago, Illinois.

inspire believers to increase their passion for people who are far from God.

The Necessity of the New Birth

NOTES
WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 27, 8:30 - 9:45 AM
A Life Well Lived
There is a deep connection between our beliefs and the way in which we live our lives. There is a constant tension between the
two that requires thoughtfulness, conflict, loss, surrender, joy and Jesus. How we do it, in community, in solitude…slowly shapes
our soul and moves it toward God.
WEDNESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 27, 7:00 - 9:00 PM
The Necessity and Urgency of the New Birth
In this message, we will revisit the wonder of what it means to be born anew as a child of God. This experience is more than an
idea; it is reality with present and eternal life implications. May we ponder anew what God has done for humanity and redouble our
commitments to offer this reality to the world. It is necessary, and it is urgent.
THURSDAY MORNING, JANUARY 28, 8:00 - 10:15 AM
New Life in Christ and the Kingdom of God
A personal testimony of a new birth experience and a deeper understanding of his new life in Christ compelled Noel to live for
Christ and his kingdom, especially loving and serving the poor and marginalized of our world. He has a deep sense and conviction
that we cannot live a life committed to God and to others without a rebirth that changes everything in our lives.

Monday - Wednesday, January 25-27
Forum I: Living as Disciples of Christ The Formation Forum is open to any Midwinter participant. This three
day event is designed to help pastors and staffs move their congregations
toward a deep and lasting daily walk with Christ by exploring pathways
toward a deeper spiritual life for every generation. All Formation Forum
events are bilingual in English and Spanish. • Explore next steps for discipleship in your church community
• Network and dialogue with other Covenanters who are committed to life
long discipleship
• Share church and ministry experiences
• Preview the latest Christian Formation discipleship resources
Each year we select significant topics in the area of Christian formation
and invite midwinter participants to come live out their faith through open
discussion, the sharing of stories and ideas and through prayer. Through
this shared journey, it is our hope that we might be better equipped as
a church to grow deeper in Christ and further in mission. This year’s
Formation Forum explores New Life in Christ.
What does it mean to be spiritually alive as opposed to spiritually dead?
How do we help individuals, families, and the church community embrace
a vital and growing spiritual life with Christ, that manifests in everyday
living? This year as we share our stories with one another we hope this
picture will begin to unfold and that it will spark and inspire new ideas and
approaches to ministries in each of our churches.
Monday, January 25, 3 - 5 p.m.
In Forum I we will explore how whole life, whole kingdom, and
transformational discipleship is manifested in the local church. Come share
your own stories and hear from a team of pastors as they share the joys,
struggles, and practical ways they are helping all generations live out their
faith, to grow deeper in Christ and further in mission.

writing new chapters each day in the life of the church. Unfortunately, we

this gathering, you will have an opportunity to share and listen to the
exciting ways God is active and present in our lives and in the church
through the joys and the struggles of ministry.
